Ford - Explorer :: 2006 V8 Has No Power To Tow Up Mountains?

Mar 20, 2017

I intended to use my 2006 4.6 v8 Explorer to tow my driftboat/trailer with a few tires over the Cascades and Rockies this weekend. I hadn't even made it from Seattle to Snoqualmie Pass before I decided to turn around.

My guess is the driftboat/trailer with tires was still no more than 1500 lbs and probably closer to 1000. Those of you who tow with yours, should I expect high revs to maintain 65-70 going up mountains with this type of load?

If not, what should I check? My 2006 Limited is AWD with 18 inch wheels. The tires are slightly larger than stock size.

NOTE: I took it to Montana using a F450 instead. Obviously, a bit overkill for a light towing load.

Ford 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel :: Rear Brake Calipers Hung While Traveling In Mountains

Both of my rear brake calipers hung while traveling in mountains. Both so hot that I had no brakes. Had not been riding the brakes. Had to bump them when someone pulled out in front of me. Never noticed them hanging but smelled them and then hit the brakes and no brakes. They were so hot that they blew the valve stems out of both rear tires. Once they cooled, I had brakes. What would cause both to hang up at the same time?

Prius (2004-09) :: Power Loss In Mountains?

I recently bought a 2004 Prius with 104,000 miles on it. When I try to go up into the mountains I only get a few miles or up to 1,000 to 2,000 ft. elevation (from 300 ft. starting) and the battery level gradually drops from 6 bars to 1 bar. The red triangle light and check engine light comes on and the car speed gradually begins to drop even if I continue to press on the gas pedal. I have only gotten down to about 35 MPH from 60-65 mph before stopping and turning around. Within a few miles of turning around the light goes off and the battery goes back up to 6 bars and works good going down hill. The dealer I bought the car from has been working with me to figure out the problem but so far we have not figured it out. He has replaced the main battery as well as the inverter/converter. The mechanic was with me on a test drive to the mountains and had his car computer plugged in while we drove and experienced the same thing. It gave the code for the catalytic converter so we changed the entire CC/muffler (one long piece) and still got the same code. The battery indicator on this car has never shown more than 6 bars. I'm not a Prius mechanic but I personally think it has a bad "Gas Engine" or something wrong with the gas engine. How do I tell if the gas engine is bad or has a problem?

Volvo - Xc70 :: 2002 - Lost Power And Almost Stalled When Driving Up To Mountains

My Volvo with 167,000 miles lost power and almost stalled at approx. 3,000 feet in elevation driving up to the mountains from sea level. Check Engine Light came on and after getting off highway and letting it sit for a bit, it started right up and made it down to sea level without a problem. Volvo Dealer could not locate problem. Codes 3503,3513,3523 were showing up. Same problem 1.5 years ago and at that time they replaced radiator, coils, and spark plugs. They said it was not that again, however, they do not know what it is. Car has been faithfully serviced and I want to keep it. I volunteer for a seal rescue non-profit and need a reliable car!

Ford Super Duty (1999-2016) :: What Gear To Put In When Going Up And Down Mountains

I just purchased a 2016 motorhome on a f53 chasis with v10 engine. The transmission has D, 4, 2, and 1. THERE is also a tow/ haul button. What gear do I put the transmission when going uphill and downhill. I am traveling in Shenandoah Valley and when I was rolling downhill the rpm began to race between 3-4k rpm without my foot on the gas pedal. Is this normal, I was in regular D mode. Going uphill I controlled my acceleration and I was at 2500 rpm. I just don't want to use incorrectly and affect my transmission and engine.

Prius (2004-09) :: Using Cruise Control In The Mountains

I feel like I am going crazy but it feels like when driving up long steep 6-7% grades if I set the cruise control for 65 I can go 65 the whole way. If however I just use the gas peddle the car bogs and slows enough to get passed by semis (maybe not that bad but it feels like it). Is there a rational explanation for this behavior?

Ford - Explorer :: 2006 - Hard To Start?

It is a 2006 Explorer with the 4.0 and around 89,000 on the odometer. Around a couple weeks or so ago the wife said the explorer was hard to start one evening and it has been like that ever since. It cranks for about 5 seconds and then fires. So far it has started every time since this issue began. This is really the first issue we have ever had other than the radiator replacement a few years ago.

Ford - Explorer :: 2006 4x4 V8 Jerks While Driving

I have a 2006 Explorer V8 4x4 when driving at any speed it will start jerking or surging. The rpms do not increase nor decrease so I don't think tranny problems. When cruise control is set it still acts up. It is not setting a check engine light or code, so when I took it to the dealer they couldn't find anything. We drove it with technician and of course it did not happen. This problem is irritating at best and I'm not to sure its safe for the wife and kids to be in. I'm thinking it maybe a fuel system issue i.e.~ fuel pump, filter, injectors etc. but I'm not sure. Also, I was told to run the vin on ford.com and check for recalls or if the computer needed an update. No recalls, but nothing was said or showing if update was needed.

Ford - Explorer :: 2006 - Shifts Really Hard?

my wife has an 06 with 77,xxx miles on it. as far as i know there has never been any tranny upkeep done on the vehicle. we have owned the care for approx 15 months. it doesnt act up all the time. it will shift real hard into reverse, feels like it is popping into it real bad. then at times it feels like it slips very little going into overdrive. and at times it will pop when shifted into drive. it is hard to predict, i thought maybe when it was warmed up and the fluid was warm it might not do this, but it does. i know nothing about this thing, the dealer wants me to bring it in so they can plug it in?

Ford - Explorer :: 2006 - How To Remove The Y Pipe

Pulling the Y pipe down on a 2006 4.6 3 valve? I recently pulled my wife's motor out and replaced it. I could not figure out how to get the Y pipe out so I had to leave the trans up under the car on jack stands because the Y pipe was in the way. I have a plugged cat now and want to buy a whole new Y pipe. I don't have a problem cutting the old one out with my sawzall but I want to be able to reinstall the new one without my sawzall.

Ford - Explorer :: 2006 - ECM Resets Every Time Remove The Key

I have a 2006 Explorer XLT. Each time I drive it, the trip miles have been reset to zero, and the gas mileage re-starts at zero, and the truck seems to not run as smoothly as it does in the midst of a couple hundred mile trip.

If I stop for gas and take the key out and open the door, the ECM seems to reset itself back to factory defaults. It don't seem to store anything. It seems like there may be a blown fuse for memory storage or something similar, but I haven't found a blown fuse anywhere. It acts like it would if you remove the battery ground and touch it to the positive to reset the ECM.

Which fuse this may be and its location? Is there another possibility of failure?

Ford - Explorer :: 2006 - Misfire On Cylinder 3 And 4 Consistently

My wife's explorer has developed a misfire on cylinder 3&4 consistently. I did have cylinder 2 misfire once. But have not had it come back. The explorer is a 2006 4.6 limited with 130000 miles. Originally it was misfiring on cylinder 3. So I swapped the coil packs between 2&3. Cleared the codes. Still got a cylinder 3 misfire. So I went and bought new plugs for it. Cleared the codes. Still misfire on cylinder 3. Swapped injectors 3&1.

I took it out and romped on it and now I get cylinder 3&4 consistently misfiring. Now I got me to thinking that the only side that is misfiring is the pass side. I was going to swap o2 sensors but couldn't get the driver side out so I went and bought a new o2 upstream for the passenger side. Still get 3&4 misfire. Thought it might be fuel related so I pulled the filter. It was kinda tough to blow through so I put a new fuel filter in it. How the hell can I check the fuel pressure without a fuel fitting? I am now thinking it might be fuel pump, plugged cat, or low compression

Ford - Explorer :: 2006 - Head Gasket Blown?

i have a 06 explorer with the 4.0 V6. 4x4 XLT with 106xxx miles. i just bought this thing back in January. of corse, i didn't get an ext warranty. well the past couple months its been loosing power, its got a stumble and seems sluggish. its losing water. no water in oil, no oil in water, don't smell coolant in the exhaust. yesterday i went out and looked and found at front of head on pass side at front cyl, there was coolant from head gasket down the block and also in the valley of the block. i started the engine and once warm, everything was dry. shut it off after about 20 minutes and still nothing wet. this afternoon the only wet spot was in the valley which was dry after running yesterday. is there anything else i can check before tearing it down? with the water in the valley, it looks like it could be coming from the thermo housing.

I connected the OBD reader and no codes. I noticed the check engine light came on and then off so I replaced the spark plugs replaced and transmission fluids, checked all fluids and leveled them then replaced the fuel filter while I was at it. Drove around for a day like normal did about 50 miles no lights came on but then today while driving in the morning when I accelerated to around 55-60 entering 5 gear the car did the sputtering and loss of acceleration again and no lights or codes.
