Ford - Explorer :: 2004 V6 - Recurring Engine Failsafe Mode P2106
Aug 14, 2015
So my Explorer is a 2004 Eddie Bauer v-6 with about 93K miles, great condition, very clean and never had any issues. I've had it about 6yrs.
For maybe 3-4 years now the truck has seemingly randomly gone into Engine Failsafe Mode in the message center. I haven't noticed any pattern here as to when/why this occurs. The wrench icon lights up as well as the Service Engine Soon light. Sometimes I seem to notice a change in power/performance but often I don't. There are times when this happens every few days, and sometimes it goes weeks without occurring. Often it just goes out of Failsafe Mode after I've turned the truck off and restarted and seems fine again. For all of these years this has been a nuisance more than anything and so I assumed(hoped) it was just a sensor issue and nothing to be worried with.
A few days ago the truck actually shut off while driving...losing power, immediately after it kicked into Failsafe Mode while driving slowly down a straight road (no inclines or anything). Today it went into Failsafe mode, and it kept running, however the gas pedal did nothing...I couldn't accelerate at all though I still had power. Coasted to a stop. Turned truck off, started right up and the gas pedal worked fine. 15 minutes later same thing...this time when I coasted to a stop...I noticed that when I put truck in reverse I WAS able to back up using the gas pedal but couldn't go forward. Turned truck off, ran fine though still in Failsafe Mode...drove home where it sits now.
Don't really wanna drive it now though I need it as my only source of transportation. I did have the scan done on it at Autozone a month or so ago and got the P2106 "Throttle Actuator Control System--Forced Limited Power" reading...which of course means nothing to me...and the guys who worked there had no idea either. I had the oil changed at Midas yesterday where they checked fluids and all that good stuff...I mentioned it before hand and they said they looked at anything they could and couldn't find anything without running diagnostics on it...I didn't have them do this as it is quite costly and at that point I hadn't experienced the issue with losing acceleration/gas pedal functioning while driving down the road.

Well my p2106 code seems to be different from all the other ones Ive read. I get the p2106 code after the truck goes into "FAILSAFE MODE" and it only goes into failsafe mode the moment the truck reaches 40mph and then loses all its power. I turn the truck off and back on and its back to normal until I go 40mph again. I scan it and only get one code p2106. The truck idles and runs perfectly until it reaches 40mph! I've replaced the entire throttle body with a new one from ford and it keeps doing the same thing. I don't want to keep buying electronic parts as they are not returnable. My truck is a 2005 Expedition with 72k miles on it

I have a 2004 F-150 Lariat with a 5.4. (FYI-Have not had clockspring recall fixed yet)
124K miles. Vehicle has been operated in AZ and TX only until coming to Minot, ND 6 weeks ago.
3 days ago I got an "Engine Failsafe Mode" on startup. I shut the vehicle off immediately. Started it up again and the "Engine Failsafe Mode" message disappeared, but the engine light came on and has stayed on for the last 3 days. It seems to be running ok, maybe a little rough.
I ran the reset info on the dash screen and all systems read out OK. I have not run the truck over 40 mph since, and not on the highway, but it seems to accelerate without a lot of hesitation.
I've seen in other forums that this might be a dirty or faulty throttle body and/or the dealer may be able to re-flash with updates but this is old 2004 info from newer owners back then.
What am I looking at from a time/price angle when going to the Dealer for service? I don't want to replace a throttle body if it just needs to be cleaned and re-flashed because I'm ignorant.
Anything I should watch out for? I'm not a competent mechanic!

I just got an Egde Evo which I installed and everything looked great. After a few runs, I noticed the ABS light coming on an soon after that my transmission goes to limp mode (the wrench lights up).
I receive the DTC error: P2106 on the Edge Evo.
I have gone back to Factory default, but it keeps coming back, ie. the ABS light lights up and the Trans goes to Forced Limited Power (according to the Evo).

Problem started after an ignition coil went bad where '06 Accent w/ 45000 miles locks into 3rd gear failsafe mode. Changed coil and plugs, flushed transmission fluid and refilled with SPIII. Old fluid was very dirty but not full of metal bits. Car still goes into failsafe first time it reaches 3rd gear after initial startup. If you disconnect and reconnect battery after driving for 1-2 miles in 3rd gear the car works fine. Even after sitting for an hour and still slightly warm car works fine. If car gets cold again 2-3 hours later in winter you go into failsafe in first mile. Once again battery disconnect/reconnect puts it back to normal. I assume it is some type of sensor going bad and don't want to have a repair shop replacing good parts.

My wife's 2003 GLX (V6) atx fwd wagon has almost endless CEL issues. On one occasion it momentarily went into the blinking mode, which did not recur after shutting the car off and restarting. Problems have been all over the map, or so says the dealer (Martens VW in Washington DC), e.g. crankcase ventilation, temp sensor and so on. Car has always run fine but every time we take it into get the CEL fixed, it comes back in about 2 days. BTW, I just bought an extended warranty (before the mfg version expired).

2004 Explorer Eddie Bauer . Bought it like this and trying to figure why. Code is P0740 and P0743. It will go about a mile then go into Limp Mode with the Orange Wrench symbol and will die. If I pull over and restart it will go another mile before doing it again. Any Tips? Trans is 5R55S....

I have been having this same problem over and over again. Check engine light comes on with P2127 and P2106 codes. 1st time they said they needed to flash the computer. Worked fine for maybe 6 months and then again. While this is happening you cant go over 2500 rmp with it floored and takes forever to get up to 60-80 kph which is the fastest it will go. Sometimes after starting stopping 5-8 times it will be fine. The second time they replaced the gas pedal because the sensor was deemed bad. Now about 8 months later here up it comes again. This time I was pulling my boat and I thought I wasn't going to make it up the hill. I don't trust this car anymore especially for long trips. So anyway they updated the computer again, and then 4 days later up it comes again. Also inner tie rod ends I have replaced 3, just so you know I only have 52000 kms on this 2008.

So over the last couple months every couple of weeks my car throws a couple codes:
17497 - Mixture Regulation; Bank 2; Range 1: Lean Limit Exceeded
P1089 - 001 - Upper Limit Exceeded - Intermittent - MIL ON
17559 - Long Term Fuel Trim Additive Air; Bank 1; Range 1: System too Lean
P1151 - 001 - Upper Limit Exceeded - Intermittent
If I clear them things are fine for a week or two, then they return. I'm gonna check my intake, as I may not have a good seal on all the couplers (EIP CAI with the replacement for the accordian pipe). Otherwise I'm thinking injectors?
As to the noises, with the key turned to ACC ON but without turning over the engine I hear a steady ticking. It sounds like a mechanical clock, and it's coming from behind the brake fluid reservoir. During the VAGCOM autoscan the ticking noise speeds up while it scans the ABS system. There are no codes on the ABS, but I've never noticed this ticking sound there before. It it normal?
Lastly, after turning off the car I could hear a little motor. It's at the front, and after popping the hood I could hear what I assume was coolant flowing through the piping behind the radiator on the driver's side, however, the fans are not running. I assume if the coolant is flowing the car is in its cool down phase and the fans should be on at low speed. Since they aren't I'm assuming I've got the common fan issue. Does that sound right or is it normal for the coolant pump to be running without the fans?

I have a 2001 Honda Odyssey with 90000 miles. Lat last year around Oct/Nov time frame, check engine light came on. I took my vehicle to a local Auto Zone store and they scanned the code and told me it was P0420 - bad catalytic converter.
I replaced the cat converter with an after market model, however after 3/4 months (after driving 2000 to 3000 miles), check engine light came on with the same code. The mechanic changed the cat converter and put a new (after market model). Again after 3/4 months (2000 to 3000 miles) check engine light came on again. And this time the mechanic replaced the cat converter and also oxygen sensor. Now after 4 months or so the check engine light is on the vehicle again.
The mechanic is now saying that the problem is not with the cat converter and he is saying there is a lot of abnormal deposit on the vehicle. When he scanned again he found another issue that read something like "high voltage" and this time the guy thought may be due to short circuit (per code) the fuel injector is sending high volume of fuel and this is causing excessive fuel to go into the cylinder and hence high volume of emission. I replaced the fuse box again and after another 100 miles or, the problem is reappearing.

I bought a 2007 Toyota Matrix new, and it now has 41,800-something miles on it. At 38K miles the check engine light came on while I was on vacation out of state. The nearest Toyota dealer checked it out, told me the check engine light code was P0741 - problem with the torque converter - but they didn't see any obvious problem and the car drove fine for them and for me. They turned the light off but it went back on before very long. The car has now been to 2 different Toyota dealerships near my home because the check engine light keeps turning on. They also report seeing the same code, also seeing nothing obviously amiss, and tell me I need my transmission replaced. This seems preposterous to me for such a low mileage Toyota.
In December, when the check engine light went on again, I discovered it would turn off if I filled the car with gas. It still comes back on; if I either fill the car with gas, or simply open and close the gas cap, the check engine light will turn off after 3 - 4 trips with the car. What does the gas cap have to do with the torque converter?
What's really weird is that the light always comes on under the same conditions. Most of my driving is short trips, a couple of miles in town at around 30 mph. The light never comes on during "town" driving. My highway driving consists of trips of about 1 hour; parking for an hour or two; then returning home -- again, about an hour's drive. The check engine light always comes on when I'm doing highway driving on the trip home. I've clocked the mileage for the last 3 times the light came on. It came on after highway driving a total of 48, 51, and 48 miles, respectively.

I have a 2008 F350 with a 6.4 Powerstroke diesel engine that just experienced total engine failure. It has around 65K miles.
There is a heavy burn star pattern on all 8 pistons, a few pistons are cracked, a few cylinder walls are scored, glow plugs are melted, both heads are cracked with multiple stress fractures in each head.
About 1 month previously, the transmission would not work in tow mode and caused the engine to go into limp home mode. The dealership just replaced the entire tranny as a warranty item. About 1 week before the engine failure, I put in a 5.25 oz bottle of Lucas injector cleaner with a full tank of gas.
The Ford dealership is saying that the star pattern on all 8 pistons is due to high pressure fuel overspray and is evidence that I had a tuner on this engine and that the warranty is invalid. I did not have a tuner. What might have caused this engine failure?
Also, they only ripped down the top half of the motor, not the bottom half. I heard this might have been caused by a cracked crank shaft, but Ford refuses to investigate this possibility.

There had been a lot of discussion about the engine light coming on and the Engine fail safe mode. A lot of folks said the dealer could not fix it. It happened to me and my dealer fixed it. This is what the dealer did to correct the problem
EEC Tested
Code P2106
Disconnected all wheel speed sensors and reprogramed PCM per SSM 17272 and Ford Hotline
No more problems.....

I was driving down a road tonight and my entire truck shut down, and it said engine safe mode. I lost all power steering and gas, all I had were breaks and electronics. What does that mean?

I just bought a 2007 f250 5.4 V8. It has the codes P0018, P061b, and P2106. The truck seems to run fine but has the codes. Tried clearing but they came back. Also, there's a small howl sound in the rear end. What a solution may be.

I'm posting for my brother who owns this Explorer 4.0 Valve rattle. As he went to lunch yesterday, he noticed his Explorer started running odd. Wanted to die a few times, lost power. He made it back to work fine, but on his way home it developed a harsh rattle from the top of the engine. While driving, he thought it was an exhaust leak. Got out of the vehicle when he got home and realized it was something worse.
When I made it to his house to look at it, the engine was still warm and the rattle was still there. Changed the oil with a Motorcraft filter (had a Fram on it before.) Started it and it sounded fine for about 20 seconds, then the rattle slowly came back. I've read a lot about the timing chain and tensioner issues, but not sure if this is it or not.
Most of those issues sounded RPM specific, where once this starts rattling, it's always rattling. It also seems to lack power and has a random misfire. I started and stopped it in 30 second intervals this morning and it got to the point where I would have to hold the accelerator to the floor in order for it to start. Where should I start?

Shifts slowly or stays in shifting mode longer than necessary. Must stop accelerating and wait a few seconds until the shifting is complete. Does something need adjusting?

It's a 2004 4wd 4.6 v8 with 140,000 miles. My wife was driving around town today and had to park it at her daughter's house because even if you floor it,the engine will only rev to about 1500-1800 rpm's and idles really low, maybe 600 rpm. she said right before it started running bad, there was a bad smell. Also there is a humming/rattling noise that sounds like it's coming from the upper intake/throttle body area. I went and looked at it,tried to pull codes.
The check engine light isn't on and there are no codes stored in the computer. A couple of days ago, there was code po420 (Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)and the check engine light was on. Engine was running fine. I cleared the code, and it never came back. I am not sure this is related, just trying to give all info possible.

I have a 2004 Explorer with the V6 engine. Twice I have had the engine die while I was setting the cruise control at speeds around 35 MPH. I shift into neutral and it starts right up but it sure startles you when it seems that you can't turn the steering wheel. What causes this?
