So here is the deal, as the title states I have a humming/ howling noise in the front end, gets louder when I turn left and quiet when turning right. I have replaced both side hub/bearings, and upon inspection I had a broke quick strut on the right hand side, also replaced that along with sway bar link. I've rotated tires, checked pressure and tread is all good. What this could be.

View 2 RepliesI have an 03 Exp 4x4 Limited with 4.6L V8 with 167K on the clock. I'm getting a kind of humming rotating sound out of the front end when moving. The frequency definitely goes with the wheel rotation speed and the noise is the same with the trans engaged and when coasting in neutral. The noise is present at all speeds but becomes more of a humming sound as the speed increases at highway speed.
I've had both front wheel bearing hubs replaced (they were completely shot), brake pads and rotors replaced, and just had new tires. The rotating sound is still there though. What else is there that could be the cause? Is there another set of bearings somewhere in the front end?
Alright so I'm having a problem with my 2003 Ford Explorer. I've recently noticed that when I get to above 40 mph, if my steering wheel is straight, I hear a loud kind of grinding or humming sound coming from my left driver side front. If I am going about 65 mph, it gets even louder and if I crank the steering wheel to the left, that's when it really gets noisy but as soon as I crank it to the right, the problems gone. When I do hear the hummin sound, I can feel it in the steering wheel. I have replaced al of the tires and it didn't work. Also, the car slightly pulls me to the right.

The tires were road forced balanced and a alignment was done by the dealer. The Rear was way out of align but they supposedly fixed it.
I do not get any kind of vibration in the body or steering wheel but the humming/howling sound is terrible. Almost like when you crack one of the rear windows and you get that pressure sound...
2002 EB V8 4WD 3.73 make a howling noise between 50 and 65 MPH? Sounds like it is coming from the rear end.
View 14 RepliesMy Dad has an 08 with the V8. When driving between 50-60 mph there is a "howling" sound. It is not noticeable at speeds lower than 50 or greater than 60. The sound reminds me of what you hear with all terrain tires when they are worn or a mud tire but not quite as loud. He has replace the tires with regular street treads and the noise is still there. He has checked for worn bearings or loose heat shields and everything is as it should be. What could this be coming from? What about the center drive shaft bearing mentions in this link?

My power steering pump in my 05 Explorer 4.6L V8 is starting to howl it's displeasure on a cold start at near zero temperature. It doesn't do it when warm.
I thought I would change the fluid but the owners manual says to use Mercon ATF, but Ford now sells Mercon V as power steering fluid. It also warns not to mix the two kinds.
So, which one should I use? And, which way to change it, siphon pump the reservoir and replace with new a few times, or let the pump pump it out and replace as it goes?
2008 2wd 4.6L 98K miles F150 for the past few weeks has been humming with a rhythmic vibration which feels like it is coming from driver's side front wheel. It doesn't do it constantly, nor at all speeds. Once I hit about 25mph, you can start to hear a humming. At 35, slight vibration. Between 50-60, heavier vibration. Sometimes at 65+, it subsides quite a bit. Both front rotor assemblies are newer, and I put in a brand new left because I thought it was a bad bearing.
View 5 RepliesI have a humming noise coming from the front end of my 2004 W12. I only notice the noise at highway speeds and it appears to only be audible when I turn the wheel to the right. For example, when traveling on the highway and the road bends slightly to the right or when I move into the right lane, I hear a faint hum coming from the wheel(s).
I started hearing the hum a few days ago but dismissed it as a symptom of my Phaeton Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (POCD). While driving to and from DC last night on a night out with my wife, she commented on the presence of the hum as well.
I just had the LF wheel bearing replaced 2 weeks ago. Here are some possibilities I'v thought of:
RF wheel bearing
Low Power Steering Fuild
Other Steering Problems (leaking rack)
On a related note, where do you check the power steering fluid level? I can't seem to find the reservoir.
I can hear a strange noise from the front occasionally, independent to my operation. It sound like rolling a cassette tape in a old driver. The sound repeats every several minutes, and lasts about 5 seconds each time.
When I standing outside the car, it hears louder from under the bonnet.
The front end is screaming like the wheels are going to fall off.
Its speed dependent, and sometimes (but not always) you get get it to quiet a bit by hitting the brakes.
- It has about 56k mi on it, and the original brakes (but new tires a few thou ago).
- I pulled the RF wheel off, and there is 4.41mm pad left
- The MFI is not warning, and there is no visible scoring of the disc
- No visible damage or rubbing anywhere.
I know in the old days (my last 20 cars) they had a simple steel clip that hit the rotor at the minimum wear point. If these don't have that (And I'm confident they don't) whats causing all the racket? I sure hope a pad change fixes it.
I have a 2005 prius that's not starting with the red exclamation . I had took it to the dealership before and they told me it was the big battery since I had the battery under warranty I just had it replaced and the 12v battery myself . Now when I went to start the car everything started fine car was running like 10 mins the heat never got warm then it shut off red exclamation popped. I turned off an on then I heard a humming kinda sounding pitch coming from front of car that got higher and higher then shut the car off and red triangle pops up and that's what it's doing now.

The sound goes off when the car stops rolling. The sound also get less or almost goes away when I turn steering a little bit left while driving.
View 2 RepliesI've recently noticed a howling sound coming from the rear end of my f150 from speeds of 45-60mph it goes away as soon as i get to 60mph and starts again very slightly at 80mph. I am sure its the pinion and ring from everything I have read online. a friend told me that it could be the pinion gear is worn out or it needs re shimmed or something. what parts should I look for to get this fixed? could it be a fluid issue? I dont want to have to spend much more on this truck....I love it but it seems like i find a new "noise" every week. Ive always been a chevy guy and to my surprise I REALLY like driving this truck and i want it to work out. What should i expect to pay for a repair like this? BTW it is and 04 FX4 with 84k on it.
View 14 RepliesI have a 2004 Ranger 4x4, 4.0, auto and have trouble with the back brakes howling, locking up and generally driving me nuts. I've replaced the drums, shoes, cylinders, emergency brake cables and all the hardware. We've bled all 4 numerous times, blown out the lines, looked for leaks and done all we can think of. What am I missing?

Drove it this am, did it to me too while idling in D with foot on brake... humms for about 1 min, and then stalls the engine... If I rev the engine, was still doing it... but came and went when I was driving then till I got her home...
I know there is a black plastic cap that makes a similar noise but not as loud, this seems like something else... and the fact it stalled the truck is bothersome... it started up then fine, but still. The only thing that is the same as when wife had it, is that both of these days are like under 10 degrees outside... So, me thinks MAP? or something else that doesn't like these REALLY cold temps? or??
I have a 2004 explorer and the only window that will work is the front passenger. Is there a relay that controls this?
View 11 RepliesI thought this might be a little difficult but it wasn't at all. Simplest door panel that I've ever pulled off.
first remove the panel that goes around the door handle, gently pry it up in the front where the speaker grill meets the panel, use a couple of flat head screw drivers for this. It will pop up once the tabs are released, then you can remove it.
Then remove the window/lock control panel, the front of this will need to be gently pulled up and then you can remove it by sliding it forward. Don't pry up on the rear or you can break the tab off. Unplug the three wire connectors/plugs. A small flat head will work with this.
Remove one 7mm screw behind the panel that you just removed, then remove the two 7mm screws on the very bottom of the door panel.
Now simply lift the door panel straight up and then outward, remove the last wire connector for the power mirrors & it's off.
I also replaced the outside door handle & lock assembly. It was very easy as well. just a 12mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet & small flat head screw driver.
1993 Previa, all wheel drive makes a howling noise from the front end, all speeds, in or out of gear. Bearings have been checked for looseness and seem OK. Might it be the front trans axle or whatever mechanism they use up there? 220,000 miles.

What i found is that the bottom pulley has a sleeve or ring inside of that pulley that is just floating loosely back and forth. What this is or what it is supposed to be ??? If it is a bad part, what is the best way to fix it ?
