2004 sport track 4wd. never had issues..no oil burn, leaks, af use..nothing. was a great truck. going to work.heard a thump and truck shut down.
oil was high on dip stick..no AF left..it all went into motor on top. seized up engine and crank broke into pieces...done..
got a new engine put in this week.
Has this been an issue with these engines..or did I just have some bad mojo?
2004 Explorer XLT, 4wd, 60k on the odometer, brake pads and rotors replaced about a year ago. When coming to a stop, usually a harder stop, Im getting a resounding "thump" in the floor. I can also definitely feel it in the brake pedal. Its like something is binding up and then letting go. Seems to be coming from mid-vehicle. What this could be?

View 1 RepliesPicked up a super nice 03' as is with a no start. It cranks over nice and smooth, sounds like it has proper compression, and has proper fuel pressure. Tried spraying either in it and it will almost catch.
Tried putting a known good coil pack on it, no dice. Usually when other engine slip timing chains, it will crank rough, like a few cylinders are zero. This is not the case.
4.6 liter V8 limited.
Problem 1 : Driving into a small town I slowed to 35 mph and set cruise control to hold speed. Suddenly a loud warning tone/ beep sounded and the engine shut off. I coasted into a parking lot and restarted and drove the rest of the way home without incident. (another 1-1/2 hour drive). Could I have had an auto shut down because of a low fluid sensor or something similar?
My cold antifreeze was below the cold fill range but still was visible in the container. The temperatures were not high and the heater still worked. All other levels were normal.
Problem 2 : It also have an irritating buzz in the dash some where. Sounds almost like you would imagine a speedometer cable could sound, except no cable. Could it be the speedometer? It is intermittent and seems related to either speed or RPM.
I have a 1998 Ford Explorer 4X4 two owner and only 63K miles. All service records including tranny flush. Tranny shifts fine, there are no "clunks" when shifting out of Park.The only symptom is an occasional bump or thud ( maybe more like a jolt )coming from underneath at the rear at highway speeds. Sometimes it is more pronounced than others. I don't believe RPMs change when this happens. Around town is fine and only at constant speeds above 55 which makes it difficult to recreate. I have checked for anything loose underneath ( incl spare tire ) and can't find anything.
View 3 RepliesThe serpentine belt on My '97 Ford Explorer broke apart while driving. I pulled over immediately and got to work on fixing it. I noticed the Idler was bent so I bought a new belt and idler. The Idler wheel was busted but it didn't mess up the bolt so that was an easy fix. I noticed after putting in the new belt that the tensioner wouldn't hold the tension so I bought a new one to replace it. I installed the new tensioner, even though it fit slightly differently than the old one. I was assured after going back to the auto parts store, that it was correct.
The car turns on now and sounds fine, but I can barely turn the wheel. What to do? Could the generator wheel, crankshaft pulley, or something else that has the serpentine belt attached to it need to be replaced as well? What should I do next?
Started up the 2002 EXP today and thought the fuel pump was failing. Get a consistent thump every 1 second. Later today i looked and noted the noise is coming from drivers rear fender well (i think). I took off the small plastic cover of the rear blower motor and thought it was in that area. Disconnected the motor and still thumps. Disconnected the blower motor resistor block and still thumps. Looked at the overhead consol and the rear blower was on HI. Turned the blower down and as you reduce speed the noise volume is lower. Turned the switch off and i thought the noise was gone. Pulled the cup holder above the fender well looking for a relay or something in that area. I cant isolate the noise but seems to be real close to that area. Later i heard the noise, very faint, and the blower switch was off. Turned it to 1-2-3 and it gets much louder. Turned it off and very slight noise. What am i looking for? My hearing is not accurate enough to find it.

I have seen videos on earlier model Fords where the motor can be taken apart and the plastic spheres can be replaced but I didn't know if that can be done on a 96 model.

After having two owners (first one '99-09, then me '09-present) climbing in and out over 11 years and 95,000 miles, the driver's seat has broken down on the left side near the reclining lever. Every time I go around a right turn, I feel like Im going to tip over against the driver's door. Is there a replacement cushion for these Explorers?
View 3 RepliesAlright, when I first crank the car I get a thump on the passenger side. Sounds like something to do with the a/c. It's having multiple misfires and dies at idle when I stop at a red light. It idles horrible all the time. It acts differently depending on how much gas is in it. If its full it runs great but as soon as it hits 3/4 of a tank it all goes down hill and starts shaking. The low coolant light flicks on and off too. The coolant has been going pretty fast out of the reserve tank. I had the radiator flushed and it worked with that a little bit. I replaced spark plugs and the temperature sensor already. What is my next move? Or what does it sound like?

Now the other day, he was pulling out and shifted from reverse to drive, we heard like a loud clunk/thump noise... It shifts into drive, and revs but won't move, it feels like neutral... If you shift to second, first, or reverse it's fine... Tranny fluid is good... O/D is always engaged...

View 1 RepliesI've noticed the last few days that my Prius seems to be dropping MPGs horridly (even worse than the typical winter drop). The engine will idle hard and loud when stopped sometimes or when braking even. I noticed this morning, when I am braking to a stop, the MPGs are registering at 75 or below and it's running when idling and it seems to be running the gas engine more. It will sometimes shut off at a stop light, but hardly at all the last few days regardless of if it's been running 5 minutes or over an hour.
I thought maybe it was because it's cold-- we've dipped to single digits, but have been above 30 or so the last week or two and has only happened in the past two or three days. It happens at start up and at the end of my hour long commute to work. I've turned off the defrost and heat and it still does this.
She's a 2005 and has just over 105,000 miles. I just had her oil changed, a fuel injection cleaning and spark plugs replaced two days ago and had the inverter serviced and recommended transmission work done at 100,000 miles. Her water pump was replaced in the last year with the recall. I just replaced the air filter. There are no warning lights, so I"m not sure if anything would show up with the codes. I'm worried because it did not do this previously, and started to as soon as I got the car back from the injector cleanings and plug work...
The truck has been putting off a high squeal every time I crank the engine and when the A/C compressor is engaging.
My first idea was the accessory belt slipping on the compressor when its clutch kicked in. So I replaced the belt. The sound has dissipated a bit but is still there on initial start up and periodically while the A/C is on in the truck. If I turn the A/C button in the cab off the sound quits altogether.
My next idea is the A/C clutch. I prefer to work on my cars myself so if you can just replace the clutch without doing the whole compressor? The compressor works amazing and the truck gets ice cold in the TX heat so if I can keep it while just doing the clutch that would be amazing.
What can I do about my car it's not shifting, it's stuck in high gear and when I go from park to reverse it makes a loud thump. The check engine light came on and the codes are transmission control module it's a 2006 and only has 30,000 miles on it. It's hard to believe it's the brain so we changed the fluid and cleaned the sylinoids but then when I drove it around the block I put it in reverse it didn't make the loud noise and it shifted fine for a minute before I got around the block and almost home it made a loud banging noise and went back to not shifting again. What the problem could be.
View 5 RepliesI have a 2003 6.0 powerstroke I was pulling into a gas station when it shut off like you turned the key off. The dash lights work power windows, door locks , radio, headlights, everything works except the fuel pump and the starter. I have a juice with attitude on it as well and it won't light up when you turn the key on. I have checked all fuses and relays. The fuseable link tested ok.
