2002 ford explorer 4x4 150k miles when i put it in reverse a loud clunk noise but when put in drive no clunk noise. But on highway when its shifts a very loud clunk and like a real hard shift !!!!!o/d light is flashing also .transmission shift solenoid ? rear ?
View 8 RepliesI am trying to track down where exactly a clunk is coming from on a 2003 Explorer 4x4(auto, hi, low). My buddy brought it by my house yesterday and i cannot pin point it. If you put the truck in reverse, once you hit the gas, it clunks pretty loud. If you just put it in reverse, let off the brake, it will not do it until you hit the gas.
I got the explorer up in the air and crawled under it. I had my buddy switch from forward to reverse, and back again. Every time he let off the brake in forward or reverse, it would clunk. The reverse clunk was definitely louder.
It does the clunks in all settings, -auto,hi,low. No flashing dash lights. The dash lights do come on accordingly. One thing he pointed out was the Auto,HI,Low Buttons themselves are not backlit anymore. Not sure if that has anything to do with it?
I cannot narrow it down as the whole transfer case, front driveshaft and front diff, shake with the clunk. U joints don't seem to have play (prying with small prybar). I then went ahead and unplugged the big wire connector at the transfer case and the clunk went away.
I have a Ford Explorer that my mechanic says needs a new trany. The vehicle takes a while to engage in reverse and does so with a loud clunk. Otherwise it runs good. I have 198K mi. It's an "02 4wd. Their asking $2,100 for the rebuilt trans. Wondering if it's worth it? May have reached the end of the line on this vehicle?

Now the other day, he was pulling out and shifted from reverse to drive, we heard like a loud clunk/thump noise... It shifts into drive, and revs but won't move, it feels like neutral... If you shift to second, first, or reverse it's fine... Tranny fluid is good... O/D is always engaged...
View 3 RepliesIve got a 04 f350 that after u shift into 4hi or 4lo when u accelerate it it makes loud clunk noise in fwd or reverse hi or lo. With hubs unlocked it still clunks. Have checked, wheel bearings, axle U-joints, and driveshaft joints all good. So I am thinking I've got issues in t-case. Popped drain plug out and wow that dex merc 4 looks nasty. So thinking I need exploded view of transfer case.

View 8 RepliesIn my 2004 Comp G I have an extremely loud clunk when braking. The braking clunk does not happen all the time. There is a clunk while having the car in reverse and power braking it. While holding down the brake and revving hard and fast it make the loud clunk every time. It will not do it all the time in drive though. I can not pin point which side it is coming from. It sounds as if it is mostly the right. It almost sounds as if it is coming from inside the trans near the pan area?
I have replaced the lower control arms, sway bar bushings, stab links, struts & mounts, I have solid engine and trans and top mounts, new inner and outer tie rods, all wheel bearings, etc.... (not for this issue, just for performance/wear).
I am torn between thinking it is a cv axle or internal drive train noise.
Sometimes when putting the vehicle into first it's almost impossible to get it to go into gear. Sometimes it's super smooth. Also when putting into reverse we hear a loud clunk. That one is most of the time but sometimes it goes in smooth. I was doing some looking around at the pedals because I think I am going to have to replace my master cylinder and noticed that on the inside of the vehicle where the clutch master cylinder comes into the vehicle it's leaking black fluid. Does that automatically mean my clutch master cylinder needs to be changed? Could this be the cause of it being difficult to shift because the clutch isn't fully disengaging?
View 11 RepliesI have an 02 f150 ext cab fx4 with just under 140,000 miles my first problem was when I shift from reverse to drive I have a loud clunk/bang I was trying to find out what was wrong so my brother in law was looking out the drive shaft he pushed it into the rear end now when I am over 65mph and take my foot off the gas I have a vibration but only when I take my foot off the gas and above 60-65mph the steering wheel or peddles don't vibrate but the floor does .
View 3 RepliesI recently acquired an 02 explorer sport. Noticing a loud hum(similar to what knobby tires sound like) at 25-40 mph. Doesn't make noise at any other speeds. I replaced both front hubs, new shocks, new rotors and pads, sway bar links, even tried rotating tires, absolutely no change. Tires are a standard highway pattern , not luggy so I don't think it's those. Kinda lost on what to do next.

Anyway, lately ive been hearing what I can best describe as a "clunk" or maybe the sound of metal hitting metal when I go over a bump. From what I can tell it sounds like its coming from the front passenger side. Maybe the rubber grommit on the strut tower is gone? I havent really checked it out becasue I havent had much time on my hands lately.
Also, ever since I have had the car the engine seems to run louder than what I expected for a VW. It has the 2.0 engine in it. Is this normal? It kinda hard to explain how its running loud but when its at idle and I have the hood up it just doesnt seem as quiet as I thought a VW motor would sound.
I have an 02 Explorer XLT with 164K miles. I am the original owner. Recently the passenger side of the engine compartment has developed an annoying squeak. The pitch is associated to the RPM of the engine. The higher the RPM the higher the pitch of the squeak. It seems to be louder near the underside of the front then near the top. I replace the serpentine Belt Tensioner and that did not fix it. The belt looks good, no cracks or frays, and I sprayed some belt dressing on it but it made no difference. What do you recommend I try next ?

I'm assuming it's something from the front suspension, but I wanted to see what more knowledgeable minds thought.There's no clunk when in forward or in reverse while the wheel is not turned.
View 1 RepliesI have a '05 4X 6.0 PSD... that has a loud clunk or pop noise from under the drivers and passengers floorboards. I've done A LOT to try and fix this noise... and know, it's definitely due to frame twist. As I can drive straight, on flat ground and it'll never happen. On a dirt road, with stutter bumps... still, nothing. When the road is off-camber, or I have an S-Turn the CLUNK will be there, and sometimes more than once (seemingly if the load change is enough).
If I'm off-road, and the road is off-camber or has my X articulating 1-2' in either direction side to side or diagonally, the CLUNK is so annoying, so bad, I think the X is going to fall apart.
So this past weekend, I had my fiance' roll back and forth (about 20') over a small dirt embankment, while I was on my hands on knees outside next to the running board. And boy... it's a LOUD clunk, and I can feel it on my feet in the X... or if I put my hand on the frame. But, for the life of me... can't find the culprit.
I have a friend who called me today, she has a 1999 Explorer Sport with over 200,000 miles on it. She said she was coming home the other day and as she was pulling into her driveway she heard a clunk then the steering kind of locked up, and it felt like a tire was dragging. She moved the truck later and said that it goes forward and backwards fine but grabs and skids while trying to turn.
She called her local mech, and he thought the diff could have given out on her and is basically acting like a locked diff rather than open.. I think the front axle must have somehow engaged, and is stuck.. So my question is this, how does the front axle on a explorer engage.. I know on Jeeps and Chevys there is an actuator that moves an arm that moves a sleeve that engages both sides of the axle. Does ford work the same way?? It would seem to me that if the truck is going front and back fine the diff itself should be ok?? The xfer case was replaced about 3 years ago.
My wife informed me about a noise coming from the chassis of her truck.
2007 Explorer XLT 4x4, 4.0 OHV, AT, 89,000 miles on the odometer.
We took the truck to dinner last night so I could investigate the problem. This occurs while only making left hand turns at slow speed.
There is a definite clunk sound AND feel. It actually sounds and feels like we are driving over a loose manhole cover, and IT DOES feel like metal to metal contact on the driverʻs sids of the truck.
He has a 2002 Explorer 4.6. The truck is having a hard time going into reverse intermittently, hard shift in normal driving and thinks it has slipped in first gear going up his driveway that is steep. He is worried that he put slightly over sized tires and this may hurt his tranny. The overdrive has blinked twice with in the year. Possible problems that could create this he is thinking solenoid pack, servos, torque converter. The truck has 110k and never done fluids, Would lucas slip fix or hurt we have heard that these tranny's are finicy.
View 1 RepliesI took my truck to an alignment shop to have him look over my truck to find a steering wheel jerk and a loud clunk noise. He believes it's in the transfer case driveline. Said to remove the driveline then drive it around and see if it goes away, if it does then that's the problem. So to the question, how to properly take this out? Do I need to make marks with a paint pen anywhere to line things back up or does it matter?
View 14 RepliesLariat stepside, 5.4L with 150k miles. Loud popping noise, almost a clunk, when making a slow sharp turn. Put it on jackstands and did the normal tire grab and shake and found no issues there. Tie rods, ball joints and sway bar links all seem tight. Looked for signs of unusual rubber to metal and metal to metal wear and found nothing. The only thing I did see was the rubber boots on the upper control arm ball joints were split. What I have checked or if I am missing something?

I actually own a 06 Audi A3 3.2 dropped with ST Coilovers that impressed me at the beginning in term of comfort BUT I don't want another experience with those coilovers (clunking noise, reverse brake).
I am hesitating with many combination.
My needs: get rid of the horrible wheel gap AND maintain the best daily ride comfort 'cause I live in Quebec and I can not count anymore the potholes and patches on the roads....
The setups I am hesitating with:
-I LOVE how the H&R Supersports sit, that IS the drop level I want. And If I go with them, I would also buy some adjustable koni yellow. *I worry about the comfort*
-DG springs *worry to almost not see the difference between DG and stock look*
-VWR springs *worry about getting the reverse rake I am afraid of*
with DG or VWR springs I would conserve the stock shocks, because I guess those springs are not so low to need shorter shocks.
