Yesterday I noticed when I pushed the 4x4 high and the 4x4 low button nothing happened, there was no light indicator coming on at the dash, and also there was no differece in gears when 4x4 low was selected, is there an easy fix to this like possible a fuse blown?
View 14 RepliesI think it's possessed! My sisters vehicle, a 2002 Explorer with a 4.0 V-6, automatic, 2 wheel drive will just shut off. At first it acted like it would vapor lock. But it would start right away. then the a while later, (several months), it got where it would drop rpms and the engine shudders, sometimes not dying.
When this first started, the throttle body was cleaned, a new air filter installed, fuel pressure checked. Everything checked out and for a few days it ran fine. Then it started all over again. There has never been a code thrown. All of this goes on only when the ambient temp is above 70 deg.'s. below 70 deg.'s it runs perfect.
Last week it went to the mechanic again and a new crank speed sensor, fuel pump, and diagnostic done. He could not find anything wrong any where. Took it for a test drive and it dyed on the mechanic. Still no codes. What the problem might be? Every Mechanic that has looked at it has gave up, one even saying, " it's possessed."
99 Passat1.8t auto, transmission doesn't engage into any gear ... Cluster shows that all gears selected ....
ATF level OK and VAGCOM doesn't show a ny codes/errors for trann When I put D or R - car revs up to 1200RPMs and thats it Checked ECU and TCU (tranny computer) no signs of water in them I don't really know history behind this vehicle but it had been sitting from 2009, had run before without problems (at least thats what previous owner told me) ...
I have an 02 5r55w 2wd that I'm on the fence about right now and not sure if I should try and fix myself or pay $990 for a used one with unknown miles and 90 day warranty..
I bought it with 160-164k with no 2nd gear, OD flashing. Took it apart, replaced some bands, planetary, servo piston(end broke off-think OD.
After that, everything ran fine. NOw at 195k it's doing the I believe 2-3 high flare, rpm's go up to I think about 4k before shifting, sometimes more.
It has no acceleration on the low end gears, sounds like a dang 18 wheeler in it's low gears taking off, then I believe when int band kicks in, it picks up some torq and speed and shifts fine after 2-3 (not always does it-mostly when having to dump on the gas a bit).
Had issues with it jumping forward while on the brake. I've been in an 03 explorer with a good trans and could tell right away mine is pretty weak...
I was looking at the servo bore sleeve piston fix for $200. Maybe that and a shift kit, would that fix the issues I'm having right now? I haven't had any OD flashing or any check engine light codes. Haven't hooked it up to check codes, not sure if it logs if it doesn't flash check engine first.
I'm starting a business and will be pulling a 4x8 and need to get this one replaced or figured out.
Is there a way to disable the auto 4 wheel drive on a 98 Explorer for testing purposes? I believe there is a module but can't remember where it's located and I don't know if it can be temporarily disabled.
View 10 RepliesMy problem is that my explorer, 130,000 miles will not engage in any gear while in 2 wheel drive or 4H. Truck will only engage in 4L. And when it does engage in 4L it hesitates and jumps into gear, especially drive. Also takes some doing to get it out of 4L. While truck is in 2 wheel and in drive, my speedometer reads about 20 mph with truck not moving. It does not do it in reverse. Also gears will grind when I attempt to put vehicle back in park because of it registering that I'm doing 20. Dropped pan and changed tranny fluid and filter. No change. Also not hearing transfer case engaging while I shift between auto, 4H and 4L. Really need this truck fixed ASAP, and need to do repairs myself.
View 2 RepliesSo my Push Button 4 wheel drive wont engage. The light on the dash wont light up and it doesn't shift into 4x4. Where to start? I would like to check the simple stuff first. O and my heat only gets hot when im giving the vehicle gas. This is all on a 2003 Ford Explorer.
View 2 RepliesAlright so a friend of mine has a Ford Explore with the little switch on the dash for auto 4 wheel, high 4 wheel, and low 4 wheel. When it is in Auto it has no issues drives fine and good. As soon as you turn it to 4 wheels high and start to go all you get is a loud clunking noise constantly. Another friend had a similair issue with an AWD explorer that we just pulled the front drive shaft and it seemed to solve the issue. How would I test the driveshaft to see if that's the issue.
View 2 RepliesI have an 02 Eddie Bauer V8 AWD that is making a ticking noise at low speeds ( under 10mph ) on the pass. side. It sounds like a rock in a hubcap noise. I have pulled the wheels and checked the CV boots and they are fine.

Just purchased this vehicle. The cruise control and radio controls On the steering wheel will not work. It has aftermarket stereo , not sure if wiring from that would affect cruise control as well as radio controls. Cruise light does not even light on dash. Clockspring? Radio wiring harness?

View 2 RepliesI have 2002 F250 7.3 Auto, I recently tried to put my truck in to 4 wheel drive and it is not working. It has WARN manual locking hubs, which I locked. Dash indicator came on and I can hear it click on the transfer case. Yet it isn't driving the front tires. It shouldn't be a vacuum issue considering it had been converted to manual hubs should it?

Today I experienced a violent steering wheel shudder that I would describe as the old "death wobble" you hear about on solid axle trucks, Early Broncos, Jeeps, etc.
At 55mph, in a slight right hand turn, a little bit of a bump in the road triggered it. I held on to it as the steering wheel was rotating left and right a few degrees (maybe ~10deg) and it wouldn't stop until I slowed down to around 35mph.
I crawled underneath and didn't see anything obviously bad (tie rod ends, ball joints, etc).
Then I noticed when turning the steering wheel (with the engine running, but parked) I could feel it shuddering slightly as I turned it.
The PS pump makes quite a bit of noise so I wonder if its on the way out.
So one day my 4 wheel drive just stopped working, when I put in 4hi nothing same with low, the light on the dash doesn't even pop up and it doesn't engage. I've done about everything I could think of doing besides replacing the motor for it and the wiring, I hate getting stuck...
View 4 RepliesI purchased the truck used last summer and this is the second time I've put it in 4wd. The first time was over the summer, and I had a hard time getting it into 4wd, and it made a "clunk" sound initially but drove fine, then went back into 2wd just fine and had driven fine ever since. Today I put it into 4wd, no clunk or any other noises, very smooth, but it drove very rough, almost as if the wheels were out of sync or something. It seemed almost like the wheels were breaking on and off on their own, very weird. When I put it back into 2wd, it did that for a few seconds until it went away. I only drove it in 4wd in my parking garage as I didn't want to risk any more damage to it on the road.
View 14 RepliesI just got myself a 1993 ford explorer and the damn thing won't drive forward but it will drive in reverse. What could be the problem?? I've already drained the Transmission Fluid out & refilled it. My friend told me it is most likely the Neutral Safety Switch but I have no clue where it is located. I will be honest I have absolutely no clue about vehicles.
View 1 RepliesI own a 2002 Chev. small blazer with 4 wheel drive available. Largest V-6 available. There is a clunk sound I can hear and feel as this vehicle is shifting OUT of 4 wheel into 2 wheel drive. Going from 2 to 4 wheel drive is perfect. First mechanic (test drove alone) said he would have to tear apart the front transfer case to determine fault. 2nd mechanic (with me along) did power brake slow turns in parking lot. Said the electric shifter was bad and would have to tear apart the transfer case also. Neither mechanic put the vehicle up on a hoist.

View 1 RepliesCurrently My AC / Heat blower motor operates but, speed 1 and 2 are the same, 3 and 4 are fine. I replaced the blower rheostat that is located on the firewall, but still no difference in fan speed.. A few years ago the blower only operated on Hi and the rheostat was the problem then.
View 3 RepliesI have a 1999 Ford F250 super duty 4wheel drive, lifted (really a leveling kit but had to lift rear to compensate), 5.4l. Im having a problem with my front shaft turning while in 2 wheel drive. Hubs aren't locked and its in 2 wheel not 4. I've taken hubs off and the bearing spins free soo I know its in auto. Why is the drive shaft still turning???????
