View 8 RepliesRecently my check engine light came on. I understand this isnt such a big deal, but then my engine started "skipping", and my overdrive light is now flashing. my car will stall if i come to a complete stop without putting it into park or nuetral. I dont know what to do.
View 7 RepliesI have a 99 explorer and the OD off light just began flashing. Is this something serious, that will need attention?
View 1 RepliesI have a `95 explorer with the 4.0 motor. The electronic overdrive off indicator light (O/D Off) on dash started flashing today. The transmission seems to be shifting into overdrive. Owner's manual says to have it checked as damage can be caused. What I should be checking?
View 11 RepliesI recentlyHad to replace the right front wheel bearing and after the install the speedometer and turn signals don't work, the ABS light is on and the overdrive light on the shifter is flashing. I've replaced the VSS on the rear diff, pulled and cleaned Speed sensors on front hub?
View 2 RepliesTonight i noticed overdrive flashing. No changes in shifting, truck shifted fine. I shut it off when i got home, started back up, light was not blinking, not sure if its like the check engine light and stays on or not. Where light blinks but shifts fine?
View 10 RepliesI have a 2001 F250, 5.4, 4X4. My ignition key stuck in the start position and when I pulled it back to the run position, everything seemed ok. As I started down the road, my speedometer stopped working and my overdrive light was flashing. Also my turn signals had stopped working and my A/C clutch didn't engage. Figured I burnt a fuse. I looked in both the under dash and power distribution box and all seemed well. I checked the fuse for the turn signals/flasher and it was fine. The flashers worked. Thought I might have fried something so I replaced the ignition lock and switch. Also my service engine light came on throwing a code for the vehicle speed sensor.
Looking for solutions on this forum and the internet, I learned that the turn signal switch could have gone bad and the VSS sensor is on the top of the rear dif and an easy fix. Well replaced the sensor but nothing changed. So I went back to the fuse box. Examined every fuse, big and small and I found a 10a with a small space. This was #24 under the dash. From the manual, "#24, 10A, A/C clutch, Blend Door Actuator, Trailer Tow Battery Charge Relay Coil, Four Wheel Anti-Lock Brake System (4WABS), Turn Signal." Replaced it and everything went back to normal. Turn signals work, A/C clutch works, no flashing overdrive light and speedometer works. All from a 10A fuse. If you have any of these symptoms examine all the fuses carefully. There's a 20A fuse for turn/hazard lamps and this other one buried that's only 10A.
I'll start with truck specifics. 2001 Ford Expedition, 5.4, automatic, 141,000. We just got the truck 4 months ago, second owners. Seemed reasonably maintained, other than Ball joints.
This afternoon, my wife and I were cruising along on this warm 90 degree summer day, out running some errands and having a good time ( we both had today off) about 70 miles from home. When we pulled into one of our spots, I noticed a few drips heading in the direction of under the truck. i simply thought the AC, which had been running full blast for an hour, was dripping, not a huge deal. didnt think twice, a few drops, no biggie. We ran a few other errands, then got back on the highway going 70 MPH. I heard a low moan at 70 that would come anbd go, I thought I may have had a tire howling on the road or possibly the start of the shifted belt. Noise was intermittent, but went away after a few minutes of driving. another mile or two down the road, I noticed the rear window seemed oily. Suddenly, things began to click, oil blow on the back window, funny noises, drips, something was leaking.
My eyes darted to the gauges, everything was holding up as i made it to the nearest exit another few miles away. As I hit the exit, i noticed the overdrive on off indicator flashing at me on the shifter stalk. I roll to the stoplight at the end of the ramp, suddenly, the tranny slips. There was no slipping on the highway. the truck did get a grip and get me from the light a few hundred feet ( there was a line of traffic behind me) to a parking lot where I could stop and inspect. as i shut it off and peeked under, fluid was pouring out of the bellhousing of the transmission. i called pops, he brought down the truck and trailer and we winched it on, dragged it home.
So, now the truck in in my garage, on the lift (yes, im spoiled) and I'm surveying the damage. oil leaks seem to be directed only from the bellhousing area, other places only have blow by residue on them. Fluid is a little dark, but not burnt smelling, and within tolerance. I see darker fluid at work when I do transmission flushes all the time.
So, now the questions. First off, I would be guessing that the front pump seal decided to go out, does that sound correct to you gentlemen? I'm going to start digging in on removing the transmission tomorrow, and hopefully get it out by the weekend. Also, from the fluid condition, do you think I got lucky, or do you think I did damage to the transmission?
As for knowledge and resources, I'm a mechanic, I do mostly brake, suspension, exhaust, and maintenance work (oil changes, tranny flushes, other stuff like that) so I do have a decent knowledge base, and while I have swapped transmissions before, I dont have a huge knowledge of tier inner workings. I do have access to a scan tool, and other diagnostic instruments, but as i stated before, not a full working knowledge.
I have a 1996 ford taurus dohc v6 147239 miles..when i get over 60 mph my overdrive light starts flashing and the car still drives find..i did have new transmission fluid and new fillter put in and the light was coming on before i did that and still comes on when i get over 60 mph.

View 1 RepliesMy 98 ford ranger overdrive light starts flashing usually when I drive on the highway. When I get off the highway and drive in town with o/d light flashing the truck downshifts hard when slowing down at stoplights.,also when almost to stop i hear ticking sound in tranny until i come to complete stop. My ranger is 4wd 4.0 and automatic.
View 2 RepliesRecently my 2007 Ford Focus had its service engine light come up. In addition, a couple times the overdrive light has flashed orange, during which time the overdrive is not engaging for the car. Everything else with the car seems normal, just no overdrive. I imagine the problem is electronic, what might be at fault?
View 4 RepliesSo while driving to work I start experiencing some weird behavior with the transmission. It would shift hard and seem like it wasn't pulling hard at all. I looked down and saw the overdrive off light flashing. Got to work, turned the car off then started back up and the light was off. Any thoughts?
View 14 RepliesThe overdrive light is flashing but not all the time. What does this mean?
View 3 RepliesMy 2000 Explorer overdrive light will blink once in awhile no hard shifting, no slipping, i also pushed the overdrive button while it was doing this and it went out of overdrive , trans has been service, I know this is a common issue with explorers . I understand that it could be caused by a number of issues. I haven't had the codes pulled yet.
View 4 RepliesMy F350, 7.3 L. is flashing the overdrive light. Had a pro do a scan that said no Turbine speed sensor signal.
I would like to know where the TSS is located and then see if it has corrosion other reason not to connect.
I got this code and symptoms of 1-2 hard shift and no torque converter lockup. No flashing overdrive light on shifter. If I switch off engine all shifts are smooth until I pass 45mph. I would feel the TCC lockup. This doesn't happen the as i come to a stop I get a harsh 2-1 shift. Key off restart then shifts smoothly up and down provided I dont exceed the TCC lockup speed. This leads me to the TCC solenoid I think. Fluid has been changed regularly.
Had to drive 300 miles to get home. Only for the plate trans cooler the fluid would have overheated as on inclines on cruise control the engine would rev to 3k to keep the speed at 70mph and I could see the fluid temp increasing. Fuel consumption was very bad almost a full tank (with no ac). Doing some research there is talk about valve gasket blowout Epc solenoids etc, though these were for Rangers and Explorers, no real mention of Aerostar.
I have a 2004 f150 with an edge programmer. My transmission will only stay in 3rd gear, the overdrive light is flashing, and it is giving these dtc's: p0720, P0722, P0731, P0732, P2106.... What is going on?
View 1 RepliesI have a 03 ranger with a v6/auto trans. it drives fine around town. after i get on the freeway the overdrive light will start flashing. when i get off the freeway it will shift extremely rough. if i turn the truck off and right back on it will be fine again. What could be the problem?
View 5 RepliesOverdrive light started flashing this week on my 2000 F450 7.3 mason dump. It only does it when it shifts into 4th gear once it hits that gear at about 35mph the overdrive light flashes until you restart the truck and it resets. Does the same thing all the time but DOESN'T flash if i'm driving around town on back roads and never get to that gear. Could this be something minor besides the transmission starting to go? It drives and shifts fine even when the light is flashing. I wait to get the error code read?
