Ford - Explorer :: 2001 - Backfiring Through Intake
Dec 3, 2012
I have a vehicle that came in on the hook its an 01 exploder4.0 sohc no start.. when cranking it will back fire through intake. no dtc's however its also showing all monitors not set?? dead battery erasing keep alive memory I don't know. Here's what i do know apparently it had gotten partial tune up all left side plugs and wires changed. All right side plugs and number 3 wire factory. I have plenty of fuel pressure. It appears that all cylinders have 150 psi for compression.
I changed all plugs and spark tester is showing there is spark at the plug, (yes at all) just cranks and cranks and then back fires. I also have removed front ho2s to rule out blocked cats, wires are not crossed. I have an rpm signal which should have been evident when I had spark and injector pulse. have not changed the wires nor the coil which is a 6 pack coil. (Boss refuses to get them for me since i have spark )even though I told him there was some arcing.

We have a 2002 F-150 4.6L 4x4. The engine went bad and we bought a new engine (remanned ATK). Had this engine installed and a year later it was bad and was determined it was a manufacturer defect so they sent a replacement engine under warranty.
We had this new engine installed. The mechanic fired it up and it backfired through the intake. They claim that the compression is good, the fuel pressure is good, and the timing is correct. Can they check these things when the truck is not running? The mechanic is completely frustrated with the situation...
Everything I read leads to a timing issue but they say they checked it so before I go in there screaming I want to make sure it couldn't possibly be anything else...

Ok, I was reading the one on the V8s, but not sure with the V6s. First off, let me tell you what has been done. I replaced fuel and oil filters, Plentum seal, and bolts, replaced plug wires, and coilpacks, and the PCV valve. I can't remember what else I did, but it was before Spring Break last year when my daughter and I were taking a trip across the US to pick up a motorcycle and do site seeing. Anyways, before I did all of this, the truck was getting to the point where I could not get it over 45 or it would feel like the trany was going. When I pulled the plugs out, they were running lean. I have had my Check engine light pop on with the Cam Pos Sen, but I have replaced that. That code has never came back, but it is still running lean, and backfiring in the intake when leaving a stop. I am wondering if the fuel pump may be going out, or what else it might by. I work on older cars with carbs, so not all that sure with the injection stuff.

My ford just suddenly started backfiring and started smelling like this sulfer kind of smell and knew I needed a new exhaust so I got a new tailpipe and muffler and problem still persisted so then I replaced the driver side catalytic converter because I had noticed after driving it that it was smoking after driving it. So now I've replaced that and i still got the smell and it just rides rougher and the check engine light is blinking after driving a couple minutes....

I went thru a 100 posts on "Intake gasket" search but I couldn't find any repair information on the 4.0L intake gasket replacement. I'm having difficulty pulling the upper intake off. All nuts and connections have been removed except for the egr tube that's connected to the upper intake.
According to another site, u should be able to just pull straight up, clear the intake studs, turn the intake to the left and then up due to the fact the egr tube is curves inside the intake towards the front of the upper intake. No luck. egr tube won't separate from the intake. This is a little long but everything has been disassembled to this point. BTW this is a 4.0L OHV engine

Our 2000 explorer xls 4x4 with 4.0 ohv just pop the code for the intake gasket leaking. My question is, would there be any way to tell if it is the upper or lower that is leaking? It has 188k on it but still runs good. I think I can feel a miss in it at idle but it is not a steady miss.

I'm in the process of changing my upper and lower intake gaskets. my question is, the upper intake along with the tubing on the fuel rail are caked with oil/carbon, along with the back side of throttle body. What would be the best way to clean them?

I have a 77 bronco with a 5.0 efi engine from a 97 Ford Explorer. I noticed there is oil in the cold air intake area and upper intake manifold. I was checking on things and noticed oil around the PCV valve and on the outside of the cold air intake system. Should I be concerned about this? I have done some research. I checked the PCV valve and intake manifold gasket which appear to look fine.
The PCV valve rattles and the gasket is intact. Granted there isn't a lot of oil when I looked inside the upper intake manifold but thought I should write and ask if this is a problem or not. Should I just replace them pcv valve any ways and recheck it after driving it for a few miles? The explorer did have 110K on it but when we took it apart we thought the engine looked great for how many miles it had on it. We did change out the cam and timing chain but as far as the other parts, we did not replace.
I am also getting a unusual reading to not reading with my oil gauge. When driving for a about 30 minutes or so, My oil gauge goes down to zero when I'm stopped but when I'm drive off then the pressure comes back up. When I have it in park the gauge reads fine.

The other day my 2002 Sport Trac with 4.0 started to miss badly. It has only about 90,000 miles on it. It started to do this suddenly from one turn of the key to the next. It also makes a weird noice that sounds as if its coming from the intake area that can be described as a "chuffing" sound thats in time with the engine. The intake also gets very warm to the touch. We have since stopped driving it. I sprayed carb cleaner all around where the intake meets the head with no change in rpm. I also checked the plastic hose that goes behind the engine to the pcv valve and its ok.

I have a 2003 Explorer with the 4.0 K motor. It has a vacuum leak and the check engine light will come on from time to time. My work buddy has a high end computer and it showed that the driver side bank was running lean. The computer showed the O2 sensors to be working fine, and I replaced the PCV valve. All other vacuum line appear to be in good condition and I tried the spray test with the break cleaner with the motor running. This is leading me to believe the air intake gaskets where due for replacement. Here is my problem, I can not get the last bolt out of the plenum. The one on the driver side up against the fire wall. I tried to remove the cowl in order to get a straight shot at it but I can not get the seem seal to break free.

I just changed an IAC that was acting up, rough starts in cold weather. Now I have a loud hum in the 4 inch intake and for a minute it idles at 2000 then drops to 500 and lopes, almost stalling. Three years ago I had intake gaskets done and a new kit of some kind for the cam.
New fuel filter, wires, plugs, coil, air filter. No CEL, took it for about a 20 mile ride to see if the computer needed to reset, didn't work. Didn't do this before I changed the IAC, but I would have to tap it once in a while to get it to idle, that's why I changed it.

I am about to replace the intake manifold and gaskets. I know all of that process, but first question is if there is anything i should do whilst in there. Second question; what can I do with my intake to get more power? Mainly just kind of wondering before I get my parts ordered.

I just installed a cold air intake on my 01 f150 with a 5.4 and as soon as i started it after the install there is a loud humming coming from the intake but with some throttle it goes away. ive looked around on some of the other threads that suggest the iac valve usually causes this humming noise but why would it go bad with the install?? also i broke iac breather trying to remove it from the old hose to install with the new hose so i just connected the new hose directly to the inlet behind the intake until i can get another one to replace it. could this be causing the humming as well??

I have a 2001 F150 Super Crew 5.4. I had a leak where the water transfer connects to the intake manifold. I decided to get a new manifold rather than trying to repair it. The new manifold from Dorman came and the gaskets were built into the manifold. I torqued the manifold to specs. I replaced everything and it starts fine.
I can hear what sounds like a leak, but can't find anything. I checked every hose that is connected and they are all snug and connected. I had the check engine light checked and it said it was running lean on both sides (p0174, p0171). Also a p0122. I thought something might have damaged the Throttle Body Position Sensor, so I replaced it...but no change.
I'm still driving it everyday because I need to. It won't change gears so smoothly sometimes. The most noticeable problem is that the A/C doesn't work. It just blows hot air. And the worst part about it is...it does it even when the air isn't turned on! I just go around with the windows down...in 95+ degree heat...with hot air blowing!
This is my first time to attempt a manifold change out. What I should check?

So I was driving down the highway on my way to work today and this thing fell off my car and I ran it over. It has a part number and it says that it is some kind of an air duct housing. I looked underneath the car and it was right inside of the driver's side wheel well.
My questions is, is this something I need to replace? The hose is still there, and the housing up top with the air filter is still fine. To me it just looks like this was something to keep the hose in place that draws air in.
The car is pretty beat up from an accident, but still only has 140,000 miles and runs well so I think it has a few years left, but I'm trying to keep costs down since it is just my "beater" car I drive to work.
