Has happened twice now but last night I had to disconnect the battery. A few years ago the driver's door switch was replaced for the same reason. I would do it again but I can't find anything that looks like a switch. Where that thing is? It is a '98 Explorer XLT.
View 4 RepliesJust replaced drivers side door latch on my 99 explorer sport 3 days ago with no problems but now all of a sudden I noticed after I closed door the dome lights would stay on and I made sure all door were closed tightly so i unplugged the battery and plugged it back in and the dome lights came right back on. What this could be or how to fix it?!
View 9 RepliesWe bought it and the dude that owned it cut the radio wires and messed with the wiring everywhere because he thought he had a short. I've hooked up the radio and everything and it does the same thing. How do I bypass to make it stay running.
View 10 RepliesMy 03 explorer leaks water from the dome light and from the mounting bracket for the sunvisor on drivers side when we have a heavy rain. I have had back to the dealer 4 times. They have resealed luggage racks twice and cleaned drain holes for sunroof twice. The body shop manager has told me he has fixed hundreds of these and he has also told me that all sunroofs leak. The most recent visit I was told not to park on an incline. If I knew that this vehicle could only be driven when the sun was out , I would have never bought it.
View 11 RepliesA friend has 2001 Explorer, whose dome light isn't working from the driver's door. Did a quick Google and found a number of excellent answers and how-tos on this site, all focusing on the door switch. Problem: the door ajar light works properly, presumably clearing the switch.
My understanding is that the dome light is triggered by the GEM via a relay. When I considering the following:
- The dome light turns on via the headlight switch;
- The dome light turns on by opening the passenger door;
- The dome light does not turn on by opening the driver's door; and
- The driver's side door ajar functionality works -
I am led to conclude that the fault would lie in the GEM module. If the GEM is indeed bad, then the light will probably just stay out. But is there something else that I might be missing?
I had a problem with my door ajar light always being on, I was able to find out that it was in the sensor for the back glass and was able to fix it. But now when I cut the explorer off and remove the keys the dome light comes on instantly even if no doors are opened and the lock/unlock button on the driver door won't work. However if I manually turn off the dome light my lock/unlock button starts working properly. Also if I do not manually turn the light of with the roll switch the light will stay on until the computer kills the power to it about 10 mins later. What could cause this??

View 9 RepliesI have an issue with my seat moving and the dome light coming on while driving. This happened several times and I checked the fuses and for a possible loose connection. When I jiggle the key in the ignition the seat would start to move. I was trying to replicate the issue. Today the seat moved and the light came on but this time the truck shut off... I am thinking it maybe something in the ignition....
View 4 RepliesI was told by the dealership that the battery was bad and needed to be replaced ( which I did) I went out to my car this morning and had the same problem. When I turn the key nothing happens. When I turn the key you hear a click but that is it.

98 Ranger XLT, V6, Manual windows.....
I have a 1998 Explorer XLT V6 (4.0 SOHC) with an AC problem. The AC compressor will not turn on via normal means - turn to AC or AC Max, rotate temp to left. It hasn't been a problem as I never use the AC, but I'm fixing a few of the minor inconveniences (dash lamps, re-solder radio) and figured, why not look at the AC too.
A while back my mechanic said he used the Explorer to test his AC equipment and made sure the Freon was good. He said everything was working. I am assuming he was able to control the AC system from his tools under the hood. This tells me the system is good and the problem is related to the temperature control or a switch somewhere.
So I locked my keys in the truck and road side assistance pried the door with the hand pump airbag. After which the dome light won't turn off. The drivers door which they pried remains open about 2mm more then the passage light but if I lean on it the light still dosent shut off. This is a 2010 ford ranger. What I should try/check first?
View 2 RepliesHave a 1998 Dodge Neon and all of a sudden my dome light won't come on, either by opening a door or twisting my headlight knob to the left...changing the bulb didn't work....then I noticed that the chimes that come on when you forget to turn your headlights off didn't come on anymore either.
Those are the only 2 things that won't work....all other gauges, lights etc; work fine. I wanted to check fuses but where the fuse is located for this issue...my manual says it's under the hood but there is nothing there that indicates this...I pulled the closet one I could figure and was going to change it, but when I got back in my car to go to the fuse shop my radio didn't work, so I put it back in and radio was fine!
Can't figure out how to turn on dome light, so I broke down and did the un-thinkable, I read the manual.... from page 66
Press and hold the top of the control to the full on position to activate the "dome on" feature. This will turn on the interior courtesy lights. The lights will remain on until the bottom of the control is pressed.

And no luck. Can hold the button down for a long, long time. The dimmer function works OK so the buttons are working. I would like to be able to turn on the rear light so my kids can buckle themselves.
Alright so I ran into a problem I went to turn on my passenger side dome light in my '06 F150 supercrew and it will not turn on. i just replaced the bulb and still nothing. If it could possibly be a blown fuse or something simple?
View 6 RepliesMy girlfriend just bought a 98 XLT AWD 4.0. does have a few problems.
First, the brake light is on (on the dash). all the lines are good, but the front pads need to be changed. if i take off hard, the brake light goes out for a bit.
Second, had a CEL. P0743, torque converter clutch circuit blah blah. also, the o/d light flashes constantly.
The trans shifts fine, even under WOT. also goes into o/d with no problems, and the button works.
The right turn signal on my 1998 Ford Explorer recently stopped working. The flasher was making a horrible buzzing sound when I tried to signal right, but worked fine signaling left.
I just replaced the flasher, which has cleared up the buzzing noise when trying to signal right. The flasher clicks like it's supposed to, but the lights still do not flash.
Here's a summary of the current symptoms:
-Hazard lights work fineFlasher clicks; interior indicators flash; exterior lights flash
-Left right signal indicator works fineFlasher clicks; interior indicators flash; exterior lights flash
-Right turn signal does not work
-Flasher clicks
-Interior indicator stash off; exterior lights stay off
What to check next???
I have a 2003 Ford F-450 with the 7.3 Powerstroke. The problem I am having is the dome light stays on, the map lights will not turn on, I have no door ding with the key in the ignition, and the radio wont turn on. If I press the clock button on the radio the clock comes on but the radio will not come on when I press the power button. What it may be? I already hosed the door latches with lubricant and that changed nothing. I checked all the fuses they are good.
View 2 RepliesI'm thinking about buying a 98 Explorer that has an ABS light on. I haven't looked at it yet. In the ad, the seller claims it's due to worn brake pads in the rear. If that's true, then it's not a big deal. Can the ABS light be set by worn pads? Most of my cars are too old to detect this, but even if they did, I wouldn't know because I never let my pads get that low.
View 7 RepliesOk when I turn on my explorer the rectangular portion of the headlights light up but are fairly dim. When I I turn the switch from the off position to the first position, the front and rear parking lights come on, but when I turn the switch to the final position, ie the headlights on, nothing happens. My high beams still work in both the flash position and the on position, and the bulbs and fuses are good. I'm at a loss of what to do.
