Ford - Explorer :: 1997 - Noise On Deceleration

Jun 1, 2005

My son's explorer, 4.0 automatic, developed a problem during a 90 mile trip on the freeway. Driving along at 75 MPH with the cruise set everything seems fine. As soon as he lets of the accelorator the engine drops to idle speed and a noise comes from under the truck that sounds like an old siren, starts low pitch and gets higher and higher. The noise stops when he touches the accelerator applying power to the drive train. The transmission shifts and pulls fine, no slippage. He said that for a while the 4WD light on the dash has been flashing six flashes, pause, six flashes.....a steady code.

Ford - Explorer :: 2003 - Driver Side Rear Axle Popping Or Clicking On Deceleration At All Speeds

I have a 2003 Explorer EB that on deceleration of all speeds, the drivers side rear axle is popping or clicking. Could this be a CV joint? It does not happen on acceleration.

Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: 2000 - Whine Whilst Deceleration?

I have a 2000 5.4 4x2 with about 118k. the pinion seal was leaking. I replaced the seal and added proper amount of 75/140 diff fluid as listed on the tag. I marked the pinion nut, flange and housing, so I could count the number of turns it took to remove nut. I put back the same but now I have a whine at low speed on deceleration. under normal throttle and at higher speeds it sounds just fine. Its just on deceleration and at 5mph or less. The sound was not there before I did the new seal.

Ford - Explorer :: 1997 - Loud Clunking Noise From Under The Car

I've got a 97 explorer xlt 5speed.... When you start the truck and start driving... its making a Loud clunking noise from under the car... at first we thought it was the gear box but then after replacing with a reconditioned gearbox and transfer case it was still there... it is doing this in auto mode and in 4x4 mode... during city driving it does it all the time .... but when you drive it to 100km/h the clunking completely stops.... and then you can bring the car to a complete halt (without turning the engine off) and start driving again and the clunking is still gone... BUT as soon as you turn the engine off and on again (even if only for a minute) the clunking returns again until you drive to 100km/h and then it stops again.

Ford - Explorer :: 1997 - Whining Noise In Front End When Brake Too Hard

I first heard it start about two or three weeks ago. It started when I would brake too hard. So I took a look at the brakes and the caliper pin was rusty so I loosened it up and it was fine for a day or too. Then all of a sudden it started in the front like something was grinding. Someone told me it was the transfer case. so i put in 4 wheel drive and it goes but then you really hear the grinding. How can I tell if its the transfer case or the front end where the drive shafts go into.

Ford Excursion :: Odd Noise On Slow Acceleration / Deceleration

Ok - I admit, I don't have a good description of what's going on, but it's not normal. When I accelerate slowly, or go up a hill, I'm hearing a "rattling" sort of noise that did not used to be there. I have heard it also when slowly decelerating.

I need to crawl under and look, but my big concern is I'm about to go on a 2000 mile trip with a small horse trailer. Could this be a festering major engine, transmission, or otherwise problem?

Ford Ranger / B-Series :: Growling Noise On Deceleration With The Brakes

On deceleration with the brakes (not coast to slow) I get a growling. Sometimes a bit worse than others. Seems to get worse coming up to about 20mph from speed. No other time. I was thinking front wheel bearings as the load up from deceleration. But I just jacked it up and could not find anything that felt or sounded wrong. No play or grind or "bad" feelings in either of the fronts. Front end recently rebuilt, new tires too.

Getting backfire or popping noise after deceleration with our cars. It didn't do it before with oem exhaust, just wondering if we're going to get a little bit from my new joe z exhaust, or do I have a leak somewhere with my installation. Or do I just need it break in a little more. How do I check for leaks , Do I just need to ramp the car and check all the flanges for where the exhausts bolts up and check for alignment issues.

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Ticking / Clicking And Rubbing Noise During Deceleration Only

While switching freeways yesterday and shifting down into 3rd before hitting the exit ramp I heard I a slight clunk, and then this continual noise began. I initially wasn't quite sure if it was my car or the sound of the of the large semi engine braking in front of me so I continued on to the freeway and was able to shift back up to 5th and get to speed.

However, I held back to around 60Mph because the noise started to worry me as I continued to hear it after passing the 18 wheeler semi. I got off at the next exit and noticed that the noise ONLY occurs when the car is decelerating. It happens in every gear as well as neutral; having the clutch in or out doesn't make a difference either.

*When accelerating in any gear, even the slightest bit, the noise disappears.

I've scavenged the forums to find a similar issue but to no avail.

I've uploaded a video that shows the issue occurring. The video is taken from the driver's side wheel, but the sound resonates throughout the front of the car, can't really pinpoint where though.

Lexus SC430 :: Brake Noise / Squeal During Initial Deceleration

So, I have Stoptech rotors and brakes, and it squeals when (a) it's warm after a few minutes of driving and (2) only when I initiate braking softly to slow down, but disappears after braking firmly to stop. Brake pads have about 80% left on them.

Volvo - Xc70 :: 2003 - Noise Gets Faster And Slower With Acceleration And Deceleration

When driving my 2003 Volvo XC70, it sounds as if I am driving on nobby mud tires. The sound (rrrrrrrrrrrr) gets faster and slower with the cars acceleration and deceleration. I know that the sound isn't caused by the tires because I am running on Micheline Harmony tires which are fairly quite. I am concerned that it may be a gear going bad.

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Howling Noise At 35 Mph And Above - Stops On Heavy Acceleration And Deceleration

02J-EGT 5spd. OEM axles.

Sounds like it's coming from the front. I noticed a few months ago my inner passenger CV boot was cracked, put motor mount spacers in which should have hopefully brought that axle up to okay standards. My initial reaction is to say the howling is from that CV joint however it's very odd it only happens after 35 and when I'm not heavy accelerating or deaccelerating- only when holding the car at a constant speed.

This also came after doing the TDI 5th. I notice it a little bit after passing 35mph in 3rd but really can hear it in 4th/5th when the engine revs drop. Am I right in thinking CV boot? Or transmission internal?

Elantra HD (2006-10) :: Squeaky Noise Related To Steering In Conjunction With Acceleration / Deceleration

My daughter has a 2010 Elantra 4-dr 74k

In the last few days, a new sound has appeared. It is hard to describe, sometimes squeaky, sometimes sound like a vacuum leak or air bypass.

It seems to steering related in conjunction with acceleration/deceleration. It only occurs when the wheel is being turned to the left, whether for a left turn or returning to center from a right turn. The noise seems to come from the center/center left of the firewall area.

It only does this while in motion, I couldn't replicate the issue with the car running but in Park.

Ford - Explorer :: 1997 - Idle Too Low?

After replacing a faulty spark plug wire on my '97 explorer, I started the engine (4.0 liter pushrod) and noticed the idle much lower than it was previously- to the point it now borders on stalling. The wire I replaced was on the right side (if facing engine from front) closest to the firewall. I thought I may have worked a vacuum hose loose when feeding the wire under the intake, but I checked and checked and saw nothing amiss. What I may've did (if anything) to cause this problem?

Ford - Explorer :: 1997 AWD - Brief Rumble Every Now And Then

My 'new to me' '97 Explorer has this odd 'rumble' every now and then, as if I just ran over some rumble strips. Very brief, maybe a second or less, as if I hit 5 or 6 of those bumps. It is a V8, XLT all wheel drive and I'm not familiar with it. Is this something I need to get looked at soon or is it just one of those things with the AWD. I only driven it a few times so I don't see a pattern and all else is great. Its a tight truck with less than 100K miles and I really enjoy it.

Have a 97 Explorer 4x4. lately when I start the truck it has shifted itself into 4x4 low. I had disconnected the battery for a few minutes, re-connected and the truck was back in auto. This no longer works and it is stuck in 4x4 low. Mechanic wants to replace transfer case encoder, but says more diag needed after to replacing encoder motor to determine internal failure and may need more work. Can I simply have the 4x4 low disengaged manually?

Ford - Explorer :: 1997 - Popping At Exactly 20 MPH

Just got this vehicle a week ago. Test drove before I bought but that drive was fine. Then after driving I started have a popping. Started paying attention at this point and noting what happens when.

It seems I don't have any problem at all until she gets warmed up. I can drive about 20 miles with no problem. Then the OD is Off light starts flashing. Then when I decelerate to stop, I have a big popping at exactly 20 mph. I then have 2 smaller pops once I take off from my stop.

I started searching online everywhere to determine the cause. I am a female whose daddy taught them just enough not to be completely stupid, but not near enough to be able to fix my own car problems. I thought from what I've read that this issue might be a torque converter. I do have a hum after a while that sounds like road noise....like I saw one other person post about bad TC's. But I haven't seen any posts that address the popping.
