1997 Limited SOHC auto.
I just replaced the transmission with a known good one from my XLT but the reverse doesn't work now and there is a loud banging coming from the front when I turn left or right.
It feels like the tyres are slipping on the road, like axle wind up. This happens in auto and 4wd high. What the banging is?
My 1998 Explorer is making a terrible banging noise when driving. It appears to come from the rear. It only occurs when i step on the gas, gives a bang and the car shudders lightly. The bang can be gone for 10 - 30 seconds, and all of a sudden appear again. If I step hard on the gas, it will make a bang! bang! bang! noise.. If let my foot off the gas, it rolls quitely without any noise.
I have greased the slip yoke, inspected the U-joints, checked the rear calipers, opened the rear axle/differential plate - no metal parts or excessive wear were observed.. The transmission runs smoothly, there are no other noises apart from the bang. It is as if someone is hitting the car with a hammer from underneath...
I have a 2005 Explorer XLT with the 4.0L V6 and AdvanceTrac.
I've had a worsening growl in the front end that sounds like it's coming from the front left wheel. I can feel it in the steering wheel, and the sound goes away when I turn the wheel right of center. Center (going straight) or leftward steering, and the noise comes right back.
I changed the wheel bearing today, and there is absolutely no change in symptoms. Turning the CV shaft back and forth by hand, something feels kind of "grindy." It is the same at any point along the shaft, which has me worried that the bad bearing is in the front differential.
I have an 04 mountaineer and when i shut it of i get a loud banging noise from it. Its sounds like its coming from the engine compartment. The truck itself runs great and I didn't see any exhaust leaks. It has 70,000 on it.
View 2 RepliesAlright so I'm having a problem with my 2003 Ford Explorer. I've recently noticed that when I get to above 40 mph, if my steering wheel is straight, I hear a loud kind of grinding or humming sound coming from my left driver side front. If I am going about 65 mph, it gets even louder and if I crank the steering wheel to the left, that's when it really gets noisy but as soon as I crank it to the right, the problems gone. When I do hear the hummin sound, I can feel it in the steering wheel. I have replaced al of the tires and it didn't work. Also, the car slightly pulls me to the right.
View 10 RepliesSo I was driving home from work in my 2000 Jetta 2.0, which has 115k miles on it. Its a 5 speed and I love the car, even though its kind of a beater. Anyway, coming off the highway and reducing speed, I hear a loud banging coming from the engine bay. It sounds like a car would if a spark plug were blown out of the block.
There is definitely a loss of power and the motor is running rough. The check engine light is flashing at me constantly. I pull off the highway and pop the hood. No fluid loss, no obvious smoke coming from anywhere. I start feeling around the engine bay and I feel high pressure air (exhaust?) being expelled from under the valve cover.
So what could have broken? Cracked head? blown headgasket? some other thing I haven't thought of? Its obvious that exhaust gas is leaking from a cylinder into the valve cover.
I am getting frustrated with a loud banging noise in the front end of my Elantra. It happens when I hit bumps or dips in the road. I have replaced struts, bearings and mounts, sway bar links, control arm bushings and nothing will fix it. The ball joints and tie rods are tight.
View 7 RepliesThe last couple days my truck (1997 f150 4.6l) has been having starting issues. At first it would just turn over and not start then the battery would die. So i bought a new battery and yesterday now its starts sometimes but when trying to start it while its ttuning over it stops then starts turning and starts up. Then i drive wherever I am going when i get back in to start there's nothing.
Its not turning over at all but when i turn the key there is a loud single knocking noise coming from behind the dash near the passenger floor vent. Actually there ate two noise from the same area, one when i initially trun the key and another when i release the key. But after just sitting there doing this it will finally turn over and start. What this is, there are no codes being thrown besides my dreaded P0401 which i cant seem to get rid of either. Ive changed every part that has to do with the egr system and cleaned the throttle body replaced vacuum lines and still the code.
Recently I lowered my .:R pretty low on fk highsports.. well today i was backing off into my driveway.. When i turned my wheels to the right or to the the left the front driver wheel makes loud noise like tick tick tick.. when i put my wheels straight no noise at all.. It happens when i go forward or backwards turning my wheels to the right or left..
View 13 RepliesI applied brakes while car was moving slowly, less than 10 mph, and heard loud grinding sound coming from left front as car stopped. Shifted to reverse and car barely moved, less than 1 foot, which was accompanied by the loud grinding sound, then stopped. I could find nothing interfering with the wheels but did find pieces of brake pad on the ground along the path the left front wheel had followed. The left front wheel appeared as if the calipers were holding whatever remained of the brake pad and/or backing tight against the rotor. brake pad fell apart on 2002 at 43,561 miles...
View 19 RepliesI was coming home from a trip and started to here this banging sound coming from the passenger side in the front under the vehicle. It already sounds like it busted up some gears cause you can here it being tossed around inside the casing. The vehicle will drive but once I get to around 10 mph it would start banging sounding like gears are messed up.
There is no binding there is nothing that makes the car slower but something is broke. I am wondering if there is a gear box under there near the center console and over to the passenger side in the front. Funny thing is... Is that it started in the back rear but stopped then the front started and then broke something. The back is fine though. Think this could be the All wheel drive also or some part of it.
My wife has a 13 Prius persona. There is a rattling/banging sound coming from the front end on drivers side only. Car has not been in any accident. Toyota dealer has looked at it twice. First time could not hear noise. Second, he heard it. They looked at everything and then stated that it was the ABS Brakes testing. It sounds like something is loose- that is the best way to describe the noise. It happens fairly often, too. Never happened with my 2012 Prius model two when we had it.

I dropped off my car on September 21st and they have yet to complete my car... I've called them every single day since but, I don't get a good explanation from the dealer...
when i am stopped and turn my steering wheel a lot to either left or right, and i accelerate, there is a loud thumping hammering noise coming from the front of the car.
it also happens when i am turned a lot to the left or right, and i reverse. it sounds like a hammer hitting cement. it only happens when i turn almost all the way to the left or right...?
My check engine light has been on for 3 days i get my appointment with VW and then today i start it up and it goes off. Also, having a problem with very loud squeaking coming from the front bottom left of the engine ?
View 17 RepliesI have a 2006 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer with Towing Package. I just recently bought a Trailer and when they tested my 7 pin plug, I was only getting Running lights and 12v Charging. Im not getting Left/Right Blinkers or Brake. There is NO power. I checked all Fuses. The problem is, I cant find the Blinker/Brake fuse. The manufacture book does not show one.

When you start the truck and start driving... its making a Loud clunking noise from under the car... at first we thought it was the gear box but then after replacing with a reconditioned gearbox and transfer case it was still there... it is doing this in auto mode and in 4x4 mode... during city driving it does it all the time .... but when you drive it to 100km/h the clunking completely stops.... and then you can bring the car to a complete halt (without turning the engine off) and start driving again and the clunking is still gone... BUT as soon as you turn the engine off and on again (even if only for a minute) the clunking returns again until you drive to 100km/h and then it stops again.
View 2 RepliesI recently acquired an 02 explorer sport. Noticing a loud hum(similar to what knobby tires sound like) at 25-40 mph. Doesn't make noise at any other speeds. I replaced both front hubs, new shocks, new rotors and pads, sway bar links, even tried rotating tires, absolutely no change. Tires are a standard highway pattern , not luggy so I don't think it's those. Kinda lost on what to do next.
View 9 RepliesMy teenage son just bought his first car, a 1991 Ford Explorer XLT 2-wheel drive. I had it checked out by our mechanic before I let him shell out the money, and everything seemed OK. It's the prototypical low-mileage car (127k actual, confirmed by Carfax) owned by a little old man who took good care of it (stack of service records a foot high) and didn't drive it very much.
Earlier this week ... he'd driven it for about two weeks with no issues ... the left front brake caliper locked up on it, to the point where it heated up enormously, the pads and rotors got so hot they were discolored and some transmission fluid got blown out by the strain.
He took it to our regular mechanic, great guy who we've used for years and has worked magic with our cars, he got into it and he diagnosed the problem as ... I hope I'm explaining it right ... a little pin or piston or something in the caliper was upside down. He put it back in the right way, and everything seemed to be OK, although he said my son would probably end up needing a brake job sooner than later because of the way the pad got ground down.
FYI, master cylinder is full of fluid, our mechanic couldn't see any leaks anywhere. Although when we took the car to the mechanic, my son tried to back it up to get a better angle at getting into the service bay, and the pedal went to the floor.
Fast forward two days, and danged if the same thing didn't happen with the right front caliper, seized up although he didn't get it as hot as the other time, parked it a lot quicker. And of course it happens on Friday going into the weekend, when our mechanic isn't working, he won't be able to do anything until Monday, which leaves us scrambling trying to get everyone to work, etc., down one car.
Doing a little online homework ... which we probably should've done before my son made this purchase ... I'm seeing a lot of brake issues with '91 Explorers. I asked my mechanic if he thought there was some ABS-related problem here and he said he didn't think so.
I will say that the car apparently sat undriven for a long time, which I know can unleash a lot of issues. What might be going on here? Do we just need to go ahead and replace the calipers, any hoses, etc., as preventive maintenance?
Had an error come up on my dash. Check left turn signal. when i turned it on it was blinking fast so i figured the bulb was about to go. went to autozone changed the bulb. signal worked fine for a few days then got same error message again. Changed bulb again. same thing. went to ford and bought the bulb changed it again for the same problem. i used to gloved top install the bulb each time. Could it be i need a new socket. Truck only has 30K on it and was just at ford for service.
