I have a 1997 Explorer, AWD. On Sunday, the right front side started making a really loud, high-pitched squeal, which stops when I step on the brake. I had my mechanic check it, and my brakes are in fine shape (replaced by the same mechanic less than a year ago), so why is this happening?
View 3 RepliesMy Treg has about 3K miles on it right now, and since I picked it up, the brakes have squealed (some times VERY loud, some times just a slight squeak at the end of the braking process). It is currently in the shop for the second time to get a fix for this or an adjustment, and I just got a call from my service advisor telling me there is nothing they can do to quiet the brakes--it is the nature of brakes to squeak and squeal.
I realize that brake dust (and man, there is a lot of that on this vehicle) can make the brakes squeal a bit, but does it even make sense that they would tell me that brakes are supposed to squeal?
I am also having a sticking door handle and a defective ac/heat control issue looked at while the Treg is in (I can illuminate both the "auto" and "econ" buttons at the same time, instead of one switching the other off). Should a vehicle at this price point have noisy brakes?
What causes my (front) brakes to squeal when i brake at a low speed? Is there a fix besides replacing?

View 5 Replies1997 Ford F150, 6cyl, 138K miles. The truck has a loud squeal when the wheels are turned. This occurs when it's stopped or at low speeds (can't really tell if it's happening at other speeds ?). A friend who's a mechanic, upon hearing the noise, said he thought it was either tie rods or ball joints. I replaced the tie rods (original ones) and the squeal remains. Is there any definitive way to determine if indeed the ball joints are causing this noise ? When I posted before, someone suggested I may have a bad serpentine belt pulley, but the noise seems to be coming from the front end, and not under the hood.
View 6 RepliesMy wife's 2012 Camry XLE has developed a brake squeal after a car has been parked for a day at her work or in the driveway or street overnight. The brakes squeal in the beginning when a car is maneuvered out of a parking spot or driveway (backing out) or pulling forward with foot on the brake pedal. After that, during normal city and freeway driving and using the brakes, the squeal does not appear and brakes work fine.
I thought it might be rust but that would be gone when brakes are used. What could it possibly be?
My brakes started to squeal LOUD when I come to a turning stop. Although I don't hear it when I'm stopping going straight, it just makes a high pitch noise when I'm turning into a stop. Last time I went to the dealer, they blamed it on the brake dust... I only drove 300 miles since the last car wash.. it can't it the reason.

View 7 RepliesI just installed new brake pads in my 2WD 2009 Santa Fe. I bought the cheapest AutoZone pads. Now I have a loud squeal sound when I apply the brakes. If I apply a hard brake the squeal goes away. Until I apply the brakes again. Now, after install...I have been researching and noticed that the stock pads are ceramic. I did apply (Not once but twice) break grease on the pads. What the problem might be? Oh yeah, I did see that after 2007, oiling the caliper springs is required and might be the problem too. But I do not know where the spring in question is and how to oil it.
View 4 RepliesIt's a farm truck, lumber getter trailer puller. Not driven often, after sitting for awhile the brakes seem to be pulsing in front like antilock, as if braking on ice. I checked both front caliper springs or plunger slides and they are free not froze up.

View 2 RepliesI've got a 97 explorer xlt 5speed.... When you start the truck and start driving... its making a Loud clunking noise from under the car... at first we thought it was the gear box but then after replacing with a reconditioned gearbox and transfer case it was still there... it is doing this in auto mode and in 4x4 mode... during city driving it does it all the time .... but when you drive it to 100km/h the clunking completely stops.... and then you can bring the car to a complete halt (without turning the engine off) and start driving again and the clunking is still gone... BUT as soon as you turn the engine off and on again (even if only for a minute) the clunking returns again until you drive to 100km/h and then it stops again.
View 2 RepliesI have a '97 Explorer XLT with a 5.0L V8. Recently, I've developed a problem, in which it doesn't always start. Sometimes, when I turn the key, there is a very loud click (as if the solenoid is engaging), but there is no start. The battery is NEW, and confirmed good, and the terminal connections are tight. I have also replaced the solenoid, but the issue remains.
If I turn on the headlights, before trying to start it, the lights DO NOT dim when the key is turned...indicating NO draw, on the electrical system. I can try it several days a week, unsuccessfully. And then, one day, I can turn the key and it will start as if there was never a problem to begin with.
I have lost confidence in my favorite vehicle, as I am afraid to drive it if/when it does start, for fear of being stranded. I am thinking it may just have a bad armature, or windings in the starter, but if that doesn't correct it, I can't return the starter (as it is an electrical component).
I just got my first car: 1997 Ford Explorer XLT 130k miles, drives great and I drove like 1200 miles already, got balljoints changed but still have a problem: when car is on position D and i apply brakes it starts shaking from inside: seats, main console and steering wheel vibrating (kind of tough when i drive a lot). And one more question: how can i increase MPG i got 4.0L but it consumes a lot: 9MPG CITY and 16MPG HIGHWAY.....

I just replaced the transmission with a known good one from my XLT but the reverse doesn't work now and there is a loud banging coming from the front when I turn left or right.
It feels like the tyres are slipping on the road, like axle wind up. This happens in auto and 4wd high. What the banging is?
I am having a major issue with my truck. I replaced all of my brakes about 8 months ago. Replaced everything. Rotors, calipers, pads etc. About 3 weeks ago I pushed on the brakes and they locked up and I heard a loud pop and then grinding. I pulled my wheel and my brake on the right rear had broke the 2 mounting bolts and fell off. So I put the brake back on thinking I hadn't tightened the bolts.
Drove about 7 miles and around the 10th time I stepped on my brakes it did the same thing. So I replaced the brakes again. Calipers caliper mount and pads. I have been driving it 2 weeks and all of a sudden same thing happened. I push on the brakes the right rear locked up and snapped the bolts again. So now I replaced everything rotor calipers etc. Greased everything up and no problems for a day. Do I need to replace the brake mount and where do I get that?
What would cause the rear drum brakes to lock up upon hard braking? I have replaced the wheel cylinders, installed new spring kit, and adjusters.

View 5 RepliesMy 99 5-speed Ranger sometimes makes a loud squeal when shifting up. Sounds like a belt slipping. It's intermittent and annoying, and has been there forever. The truck has less than 50k on it. Seems like it does this most when upshifting from 2 to 3, and never from 1 to 2 or 4 to 5.
View 8 RepliesI have a 1997 F150, 4X4. My mechanic says its time for new brakes and was curious if it would be worth possibly converting from drum brakes to disc brakes??
My mechanic has quoted me $300 to do the rear brakes, would it be worth the extra money to convert??? I really don't care for drum brakes. I have done a search on the internet and every time it brings up the issue with the parking brake.
I have a 2005 prius. Got it 7 months ago. I hear brakes squeal when braking. I think I may need new pads. Are they easy to replace?
