View 3 Replies1997 Explorer, 4wd. Light saying , 4wd 4wd low in dash comes on when vehicle is started, then goes off. While driving, after about three minutes, the light comes back on and then goes off after a few seconds. This continues approximately every three minutes. What is going on?
View 7 RepliesI have a 97 Ford Explorer. I bought it in 07 and it was nice until like 2 years ago when it started to give me doubts. It never died on me,yet, but everyday when I first start it for the day, if I put it in gear right away, it will stay idle for a while and then kick into gear and just jump. I would drive but it keeps kicking off and on until it is warmed up, I guess because it goes away. Also the OD light would come on also.
View 2 RepliesAfter replacing a faulty spark plug wire on my '97 explorer, I started the engine (4.0 liter pushrod) and noticed the idle much lower than it was previously- to the point it now borders on stalling. The wire I replaced was on the right side (if facing engine from front) closest to the firewall. I thought I may have worked a vacuum hose loose when feeding the wire under the intake, but I checked and checked and saw nothing amiss. What I may've did (if anything) to cause this problem?
View 7 RepliesMy 'new to me' '97 Explorer has this odd 'rumble' every now and then, as if I just ran over some rumble strips. Very brief, maybe a second or less, as if I hit 5 or 6 of those bumps. It is a V8, XLT all wheel drive and I'm not familiar with it. Is this something I need to get looked at soon or is it just one of those things with the AWD. I only driven it a few times so I don't see a pattern and all else is great. Its a tight truck with less than 100K miles and I really enjoy it.
View 7 RepliesHave a 97 Explorer 4x4. lately when I start the truck it has shifted itself into 4x4 low. I had disconnected the battery for a few minutes, re-connected and the truck was back in auto. This no longer works and it is stuck in 4x4 low. Mechanic wants to replace transfer case encoder, but says more diag needed after to replacing encoder motor to determine internal failure and may need more work. Can I simply have the 4x4 low disengaged manually?
View 3 RepliesJust got this vehicle a week ago. Test drove before I bought but that drive was fine. Then after driving I started have a popping. Started paying attention at this point and noting what happens when.
It seems I don't have any problem at all until she gets warmed up. I can drive about 20 miles with no problem. Then the OD is Off light starts flashing. Then when I decelerate to stop, I have a big popping at exactly 20 mph. I then have 2 smaller pops once I take off from my stop.
I started searching online everywhere to determine the cause. I am a female whose daddy taught them just enough not to be completely stupid, but not near enough to be able to fix my own car problems. I thought from what I've read that this issue might be a torque converter. I do have a hum after a while that sounds like road noise....like I saw one other person post about bad TC's. But I haven't seen any posts that address the popping.
I have a 1997 Ford Explorer with a 4.0 SOHC engine. It bogs down and won't go over 20 MPH. I'm showing codes P1405 and P1151. Would either of these codes cause that issue? I'm not even sure how to start diagnosing this.
View 1 RepliesThe serpentine belt on My '97 Ford Explorer broke apart while driving. I pulled over immediately and got to work on fixing it. I noticed the Idler was bent so I bought a new belt and idler. The Idler wheel was busted but it didn't mess up the bolt so that was an easy fix. I noticed after putting in the new belt that the tensioner wouldn't hold the tension so I bought a new one to replace it. I installed the new tensioner, even though it fit slightly differently than the old one. I was assured after going back to the auto parts store, that it was correct.
The car turns on now and sounds fine, but I can barely turn the wheel. What to do? Could the generator wheel, crankshaft pulley, or something else that has the serpentine belt attached to it need to be replaced as well? What should I do next?
My 97 Explorer 4.0 SOHC has started to bog down when I press the accelerator. It feels like their is interference with the exhaust. I has a new muffler and there are no holes in the exhaust system. When I stop at a light or in traffic, it will stall. I have to keep the RPMs at 1000 while holding the brake. There is no check engine light on. Where I should begin to look?
View 6 RepliesMy son's explorer, 4.0 automatic, developed a problem during a 90 mile trip on the freeway. Driving along at 75 MPH with the cruise set everything seems fine. As soon as he lets of the accelorator the engine drops to idle speed and a noise comes from under the truck that sounds like an old siren, starts low pitch and gets higher and higher. The noise stops when he touches the accelerator applying power to the drive train. The transmission shifts and pulls fine, no slippage. He said that for a while the 4WD light on the dash has been flashing six flashes, pause, six flashes.....a steady code.
View 5 RepliesHave a 97 explorer 4wd xlt push rod. The key will not turn the engine off( when the unit is hot) with head lights on, I turn key off engine runs, i reach over and turn the headlights off engine will shut off. Start back with the headlights off the engine will shut right off, but if I turn the headlights on on while it is running and leave them on it will not shut off, unless i turn headlights off.cold start does fine.. I can turn ign key to the off position radio stops playing, so I know it is not the the switch or rod. I was going down the highway and lost dash lights and taillights the other day I moved the switch a little and they came back on the ign switch worked perfect that day.
View 2 RepliesMy explorer starts fine some days and others it just wont. No codes, have replaced fuel pump. Rail and starter.
View 11 RepliesOn this '97 explorer, the fan is running, but no air out the defrost, ac, or heat vents no matter what position the switch is in. I tried to read the sticky on the air door, but the link is broken.
View 1 RepliesBeen searching around for a while, how to just disable the alarm on my 97 Explorer- I don't need or want the alarm, period. Every time I accidentally unlock the door with the key, the alarm goes off- and I accidentally hit the panic button in the dark at 5AM the other day, neighbors loved that. Just want the alarm gone, and be able to use the key or fob as I like. Has to be a way?
View 2 RepliesOk so I have a 97 Ford Explorer 5-speed manual transmission. When I start the truck up in first gear, with my clutch pedal fully depressed, the truck goes forward as if im not pressing the clutch pedal down at all. And if I start the truck up in neutral, with the clutch pedal fully depressed, I cannot get into any gear. There are no leaks anywhere and there is plenty of fluid in the reservoir. What the problem may be or where i might wanna start looking?
View 1 RepliesI have found a 97 explorer 4x4 with a v6 and auto trans priced really cheap. It has something called control track on it. Everything is in real good shape except the trans. It only works in reverse. Is there a common failure on these trans that might cause this ? from what Ive read this is a awd set up. that's is 4wd -all the time. If the trans is a major repair I would rather do away with the awd and convert to a simpler 2wd. Would such a swap be advisable ? I m wondering about wiring harnesses, sensors, cars computer, etc.
View 1 RepliesI have a 1997 explorer awd 4.0 sohc. have a problem when driving at 25 mph it makes a very loud clunk in drive train and will still make noise all the way to 60 mph. have pulled front drive line and rear drive line and drove and noise is still there I am guessing that its in the transfer case. I have also changed the gem module and had the drive lines checked for problems.
View 3 RepliesI've got a 97 explorer xlt 5speed.... When you start the truck and start driving... its making a Loud clunking noise from under the car... at first we thought it was the gear box but then after replacing with a reconditioned gearbox and transfer case it was still there... it is doing this in auto mode and in 4x4 mode... during city driving it does it all the time .... but when you drive it to 100km/h the clunking completely stops.... and then you can bring the car to a complete halt (without turning the engine off) and start driving again and the clunking is still gone... BUT as soon as you turn the engine off and on again (even if only for a minute) the clunking returns again until you drive to 100km/h and then it stops again.
View 2 RepliesOk so I have a 1997 Ford Explorer with the 4.0 SOHC .. The girl that owns it went out and started it to warm up and went back in the house , when she came back out it had died and wouldn't start .. I hauled to our shop and started diagnosing it .
It has spark
has fuel
Timing is good
Fuel pressure regulator is good
Crank sensor is good
About 62 PSI fuel pressure
No CEL
Seems to be getting WAY too much fuel and fouling plugs !
Replaced ECM ...same thing .
Used NOID light on injector wire and I have never seen one get so bright !
97 Exp xlt 6 cyl --- While driving at night w/high beams on, all lights will go completely out. Turn light switch off and back on, then they will come on again. Where to start.
