Ford Exhaust :: Rattle Sound At Certain RPM Range
Jul 6, 2013
I use the term rattle loosely, as i can't be certain what the sound actually is like. I heard it described as sounding like 10 nuts bouncing around the muffler. I only hear the sound at 1750-1900 RPM it seems, and it has to be under load to produce it (I.e Regular driving), i cannot produce it while in park/neutral.
I'm fairly certain it has to do with the exhaust, now, my studs on my headers are mostly well, i have 2 top studs broken off on driver side manifold (1 each end).
Diagram:

. . . . .
The engine bay is a bit loud, but if it was my headers, wouldn't the "rattle" happen in park/neutral as well?
My muffler is a flowmaster, no idea how long it's been on there, as i am the 3rd owner of the truck (99' f250 v10), it's pretty rusty now.
Everything is clamped well, no black carbon marks at joints showing a leak so i figure that's about the only good thing so far.
- I ruled out heat shields, tightened all that are in good condition and removed one near the tailpipe since i dump under the box.
- Was told about the transmission inspection plate, well mine has been off for a while and the flexplate appears to have no damage/cracks and is tightened.

2000 super duty v10 with 92,000 miles. Getting that common rattle around 2k rpm range that goes away if I give it gas or let off. I originally thought it was the inspection plate on the transmission so I removed it and went for a drive to verify. The sound is still present so the only thing I can think of is the catalytic converter is worn out??

At a certain temperature range (just below freezing, -10C to 0C) I was getting a rattle that sounded like I had a cup of dice on the top of my dash. Any slight movement would cause the dice to jostle about, in other words the rattle was constant, the slightest bump or ripple in the road, slight speed up/slow down, even relatively flat roads would cause noise. It would come and go as the temperature changed but this last week the outside temperature has been consistently in that range, so therefore while driving anywhere I had to first head towards a place called "nuts". I'm not due for any service for a while, but it was getting to the point where I was prepared to make the long drive to the dealer. First though, I tried to hunt it down myself.
Spent last night with my head under the dash looking for anything that could be that loose to make noise so easily. I noticed the TPMS reset button unit sat kind of loosely in the lower dash panel, I could make a noise shifting it about, but it was just too light and too low down to make the noise I was hearing. I did the usual reaching around applying pressure to various parts of the dash while driving. Trying to listen carefully, I decided the sound was coming from the windshield (or deflecting off of it from the dash). I tried applying pressure to it, I even put a pair of socks on the end of a yard stick to I could put some pressure at various points along the windshield / dash area. No difference.
Finally, got a bit of a hint. On the highway, passing 60mph the rattle started to abate, getting close to 75 mph the rattle almost completely disappeared. Wind pressure? On inspecting the lower part of the windshield, wipers, etc. I notice that by shifting the plastic underneath the wiper arms it would make a noise. It doesn't feel very loose, it took some effort to slightly shift it, but it did make a noise. I took my "test socks" and jammed them under the hood directly in front of the wiper, creating some downward pressure on the plastic. Silence! Golden Silence!!

I have a 94 ranger 4L. I am looking for a more loud exhaust sound in/outside the truck and at idle. I have had a cherry bomb turbo on it and it was ok but not loud enough for my liking. I just picked up a flowmaster 40 2 days ago and it sounds good but again just not loud enough for my taste and kinda a lot more. I was looking for a louder muffler that is not a glasspack and would like to stay under like 80 or so.
I also thought about getting a high flow cat which i think might make some more sound but was not sure. Im running the stock pipe which is 2" and end in back of the wheel on the right. I look at the Hooker Headers Maximum Flow Muffler which i thought would be louder b/c it's more straight through the muffler so it would put off more sound better. What would u recommend for something more loud ?

I just got a brand new 2008 F150 supercrew FX2 last wed. I love it, it's my first truck ever and I'm excited to drive it. I wanted to change the exhaust to something that has a low rumble and is deep, not too loud or anything.

I have a 95 f150, Eddie Bauer, extended cab, 4x4, 302, 285 tires. My question is this... What happens if I remove the second cat. I am trying to get a better sound from the exhaust and have been told the second cat is making that impossible. There is no o2 sensor downstream of the second cat, so I'm thinking the computer will never know its gone. Also how well this affect power. With the bigger tires, it's kinda sluggish off the line.

I've noticed a noise coming from my car (2014 IS350 RWD) that sounds like a light, irregular rattle, when the engine is running in the 3500 - 4500 RPM range. I don't hear it necessarily under load, but if I am in manual mode in a lower gear, and let off the throttle, I can hear it.
The best way I can describe the noise is like a bowl of rice crispies (rapid and random), only slightly louder. You have to listen for it, the road/traffic should be quiet, and if you get back on the gas, the intake noise that's plumbed into the cabin pretty much covers it up. I can also hear it in Park or Neutral.... I've wondered if it's a loose heat shield, or an exhaust issue, but I can't hear it standing next to the car or with my head under the hood. I only hear it from the cabin. The rhythm of the noise is irregular.
I don't think it's ping/detonation, since that usually shows up under load, is much louder and has a decidedly metallic sound to it compared to what I'm hearing.

Very loud sounds like bottom end/rod bearing and is about to go out with a bang real quick!
Truck is a 2009 5.4 3V ...
Will the motor from a 2005 5.4 3V work to replace it? As I have one of those sitting in a old work truck. I know the intake etc is different but using the 09 stuff will it work and be a easy enough install or do I need a 09-10 motor?

I have a 2000 Ford F350 7.3 with the auto and 262,000 miles on it. As far as I know everything is stock on this truck. It has been a great truck but lately its been making a strange noise. It almost sounds like an exhaust rattle or vibration but it is intermittent. Its not really loud it can be heard best in the cab at idle. I've looked all over on the truck and haven't found anything. I can't pinpoint where it is coming from. I tried starting the truck with the serpentine belt off no change.
I took the inspection plate off the bell housing and couldn't see any cracks the torque converter bolts appear tight, and the starter is not engaged while running. I've read a few forums on the torque converter going bad. It looks to me like its more the 99 trucks that had trouble with that. Did the torque converter issue carry over to the 2000's? Would a torque converter/transmission problem be intermittent?

I just got my v8 3 days ago and when i floor it its almost as if the exhaust is back fire but like a rattling noise it does it in neutral and if I'm driving, Is this just because its new or should it be going in for service already??

I just got my R last Monday and have noticed a weird rattle coming from the exhaust. It only happens when I am driving. I can rev the engine when parked and the car sounds great. The rattle seems to happen when the car shifts and seems to happen less often if I've been driving for a little while. I did take it to VW they put it on a lift and checked everything underneath. I was told it might just go away but if not to come back and they will further check it out. What it might be?

I did some searching and found someone with the same dsg rattle chatter noise I am getting from my R (check link below)
My R has 102,000 miles, runs excellent but the dsg makes a noise mostly when I am in gear stopped with my foot on the brake. While I was under the car checking out the chatter noise I noticed a faint exhaust leak somewhere in the headers near the flex pipe. I want to fix it and I plan to put on a cat back exhaust very soon but I really don't want to spend the money on a set of headers.

OK, my stock exhaust would rattle when I shifted UP with the DSG, seems to be a fairly common thing. I got the EJ exhaust and it STILL does it on occasion, not as bad. Is there a loose heat shield or something? If I rev the car slowly while driving (not standing still) and get it to red line there is no metallic rattle. If I rev it fast and shift, it rattles

I have the invidia midpipe installed on my 06 GS300 AWD. The guy at the shop had to do some cutting and welding to make it fit on the driver's side, I also noticed he removed the damper near the middle of the car for the pipe to fit as well. Ever since then, my car makes a loud rattle whenever I start the car, but only when the engine hasn't been started for a few hours, what it could be, I never had time to take it back and let it cool for him to check it out.

I recently purchased this truck and have towed a couple of times with it. It has 98,000 miles and I do not know if the automatic transmission fluid has been changed. Should I have it flushed or drop the pan and change it? I have a lift so doing the change is no problem, although it might be worth it to pay a transmission shop to do it.
Also, I hear what appears to be like a heat shield rattle or something that sounds kinda like an exhaust leak during loaded acceleration. What to look for to locate the noise? One last question, the air bag light is on sometimes then off sometimes. Any known air bag light issues? I love the truck, hate the gas mileage!

Just installed 2 new door lock actuators. While at a very long stop in traffic, a door lock clicking sound started to come from the door panels. The actual locks were not moving. Just the sound.

I have recently started to have the exhaust rattle on my RX330. It occurs every now and then when the car is on an angle or more particularly when going over a speed bump. I had been trying to find out where it was coming from and it looked to be the exhaust possibly touching the plate that separates the exhaust from the spare wheel cover (which of course is plastic). This is the part I am talking about....
Now the first part of me thinks that to resolve the issue it would be handy to put some padding there to stop it from rattling against the shield when the exhaust does move. The second part of me also thinks, it might be time to replace the rubber holders as they seem to be particularly soft and have quite a bit of give to them. Now for the interim I would want to put some padding on there. What padding have to put there? Would exhaust wrap be the most obvious choice to wrap around the shield?
Trying to find an inexpensive temporary solution. The long term resolution would be for the actual rubber rings themselves to be replaced as well as having that small metal bit covered in some sort of wrap to prevent metal to metal touching (hence vibration and noise). Part of me also thought to remove the shield altogether, but worried that the exhaust may touch the plastic around the tyre and cause it to melt and possibly catch fire, as it does sway a bit.

I recently purchase a 2011 Sonata. It sounds like there is a rattle in acceleration coming from the exhaust (passenger rear)
I had the just alignment professionally checked, and it's spot on, but it seems to pull to the left still.

Ever since I got my 3" TB installed I've noticed it rattles on the rear beam. I have tried wrapping the beam with exhaust wrap but it lasts for few days. What could I do to fix it?

So I recently lower my car and my 3" exhaust started a constant rattle when I'm in the car. When I get out it stops. Been lowered for a week or so now and today was the first time that happened. I've read up and seen its pretty common when we go lower. Also some ways to possibly fix it.
