Ford Excursion :: Viscous Clutch For Fan Working?
Sep 22, 2012
I have never heard my fan change noise pitch since I bought the V-10 Ex four years ago. Could it be working right? It's been through plenty of hot days and idling.

View 14 RepliesI'm doing an install on my son's 2000 passat V6 30 valve.
I have the front rad pulled out and there is plenty of room to work. How do I get off the viscous fan assembly. I removed the fan's 3-4 allen bolts, I now need to get the assembly out. I also removed one of the long allen bolts in the actual assembly. I have the fan ribbed pulley secured with an old serp belt and grip wrench. I am trying to losen the large nut behind he fan assembly. I have attached a photo to point of reference. I may have a manual next week yhat may explain all this.
What could be the cause for a viscous fluid on the floor of the car on the driver's side. "White" smoke comes from the engine and it makes a noise. Car is a 1993 Volvo 850 stick shift.
View 4 RepliesI am looking at purchasing a 2003 passat glx 4motion (V6) with 170,000 miles on it for a winter car. The car I'm looking at has been diagnosed with a "rear viscous coupling loose" and a repair estimate of $1700 to fix. The car will be priced accordingly but I'm curious if this is something that I can repair myself and save a few beans.
I am pretty handy with repairs so that's not too big of a problem. I've been searching the forums and can't seem to find anything on this problem. Is this in the rear differential or is it a part of the Torsen center diff?
The car also has a clogged heater core, I've located plenty of info on this site on how to repair this so that won't be to hard.
I have a 2003 Toyota Camry LE that I recently took in for service (oil change). The car has about 95000 miles on it. After I drove it home and used it I now see a small pool of a light brown viscous liquid under the car. The liquid is not odorless. Its got what I can only describe as a 'chemically'smell. The drip is happening near the front end of the car. What could this be? Is this something that needs immediate fixing? Am I putting my family as risk if I don't attend to this right away?
View 14 RepliesThe clutch is on 2 seconds and off 2 seconds, and there is a click up on top that clicks every 2 seconds ?..........no cold air either.
View 12 RepliesI've had a jangling fan clutch for awhile. Would love to get ridbof this. Any tricks to get rid of that noise? Pretty sure its functional, just noisy.
View 10 RepliesHave a growling noise in the rear when turning for the past two years. Getting worse so I assume I'm getting down to the metal on the clutches. Done all the other stuff like change the fluid and add friction additive. Have not pulled the cover and have the Mag Hytech diff that increases the capacity from 3 to 6 quarts of RP 75W-140 oil. Still does it. Just wanting to know if aftermarket clutch packs are available or is this a dealer only part. Ballpark how much are the clutch packs?
View 14 RepliesDriving home today I started smelling a burnt clutch smell!
Well since I have an automatic, I wasn't to worried until my 6 yr old gets out when we get home and says "DAD something stinks really bad out here!"
Get out and wow!! I have never had a caliper lock up on any vehicle I have ever owned! It stunk like I burnt a clutch out of a standard tranny!
So I start poking around and the left rear caliper is locked up, rotor is blue and you can hear it popping like a valve spring cooling down.
So my question is is there anything to look for other than the normal? I will be getting the brake system power bleed after I replace the caliper. I already checked the brake lines and there are no obvious issues. It is possible the rubber inner lining is toast.
My Edge is reading "PO528: Fan Speed Sensor Circ No Signal". When I'm pulling a large 5th wheel up a 4% hill by the time I hit the top (if I don't slow down)warning beeps are gong off and my ECT is at 240. I can hear the fan come in at 215 and it stays in all the way up in temperature.
All the posts say c/o the fan clutch. While that may fix the fault signal, would it do anything for the temp situation. If the fan is locked in it seems like a lot of money just to clear the fault. Or......is the fan still slipping but sounding like it's working? This my be not related but I did notice that as the temp rises the AC starts not working. By the time I reach the top of the hill it is blowing hot. As we go down the other side and ECT comes down, it starts cooling.
A few years ago I had the clutch changed on my 1997 F150. Afterwards the cruise control wasn't working. When I brought the truck back to the repair shop I heard the manager tell the mechanic to "attach the clip by the pedal" and that fixed it.
I just had some work done, had to replace the oil pan, and the mechanic had to remove the transmission. Now the cruise control doesn't work. I changed the Pressure switch but it didn't fix the cruise control. What that clip might be that fixed the cruise control last time?
My AC clutch, radio, cruise control, and turn signals are not working. I have checked all fuses and relays that I can find, all good. From what I have read, these are not part of the GEM function. What I need to check next!
View 7 RepliesSo a few weeks ago my remote quit working. I assumed it was the battery so I replaced it and it's no better. Before I order a new remote is there anything else I should check? Am I going to be able to program the new one without this first one?
View 14 RepliesI have been hearing different things whats wrong but its cold here in the winter and I have 6 kids I need my heater. My heater doesn't work. It will turn on and blow out air but it never gets hot not even a little bit. My AC kicks but heater doesn't work. What can it be???
View 12 RepliesI suspect the power may not be getting thru the GEM. Gonna take it to get the GEM codes read to make sure - not looking forward to spending the $ to replace the whole darn gem if it is indeed the problem. Any success story of ever try bypassing the gem or taking power from another switched source?

View 2 RepliesJust purchased a new to me 2003 Ex with the 6.0. The rear AC motor is not working at all. No hot air blowing...nada. I swapped out the 40 amp fuse for the auxiliary blower and still no luck. What should my next move be?
View 3 RepliesDown hill toward intersection with light that turned red. I braked fairly hard and then all of a sudden, brake pedal goes to floor and I go through the light. I pump brake once or twice and still nothing. Luckily I made it through without hitting anyone and eventually stopped with emergency brake. Turns out the line to the rear brakes blew. It was probably weak and maybe the pressure from braking hard blew it. This was sudden. There was no warning whatsoever. Reservoir was empty and practically no brakes in the front. There was enough front brakes to keep the truck from idling forward, but that is it. I thought that I should have had full front brakes with a modern day master cylinder. Looks like Ford blew it with this one. Very dangerous design.
Is there an upgrade available? I never want this to happen again.
I have read that I can remove my trip computer and re-soldier my connections. I have looked all over and can not find out how to remover the trip computer to do the repairs.
View 4 RepliesMy front ac blower fan is not working. I changed the resistor because seemed to be popular answer for fix but nothing I took blower off and straight wired it and it worked so that should rule out blower motor. Right? Swapped relay 103 and nothing...
View 8 Repliesthe rear heat doesnt work, the front heat works and the rear AC works fine.
