Ford Excursion :: Speedometer Was Not Working And Truck Wandered A Lot
Jan 18, 2013
I just bought this Excursion, well actually traded my motorcycle for it.
When I test drove it the air bag light was on and there was no radio or 3rd row seat in it. The owner told me that he had removed the 3rd row seat (and seat belts) along with the DVD system with headrest monitors at the request of a buyer that wanted the truck without that stuff. He then told me that the air bag light came on when he removed the DVD system. The truck was also missing the wiper arms.
I explained that I was interested in the truck but ONLY if the above problems were fixed.
The next day he calls me to tell me that everything has been taken care of and we could make the trade whenever I was ready.
So I rode my bike to him. The 3rd row seat had been installed and the wipers were fixed. He had installed a different radio and told me it would have taken him all day to get the DVD back in but he would give me the system and I could install it. I figured ok, I don't mind doing that and I can make sure it is done right. The air bag light was off, so I made the deal.
Driving home I noticed the speedometer was not working and that the truck wandered a lot. I noticed the wander on the test drive but didn't think it was as bad as it now was. About a mile from my house I could smell hot brakes. Before I smelled the brakes I called the guy and told him about the issues and that I would take a quick look in the morning in the daylight. He assured me that he would take care of any problems that I found.
The next day I pulled the gauge cluster to see if there was a loose wire... there wasn't. But I did find that the air bag light wasn't on anymore because the bulb was removed. At this point I was very upset and called him and text his wife and got no answer. Since I couldn't really drive the truck with the dash pulled apart, I put it back together and decided to look at the rear brake where the smell was coming from. Around this time I noticed that the 3rd row seatbelts were not installed. Also that the truck is riding on C load range tires with a bit of dry rot.
I went to pull the rear wheel and the lug nuts were those spline ones where you need a key. Of course the key wasn't in the truck. I was however able to get a 3/4" socket on them to get the lugs loose. I found the brake problem to be a caliper mounting pin was rusted in place not allowing full retraction of the pads from the rotor. I figured this one wasn't his fault as I didn't notice it the day before. So I ordered new caliper mounts and hardware from Rock Auto. It was going to take a couple of days to get the parts so I drove my car to work the work next day.
After work I stopped by his shop. He gave me the key for the wheels and explained to me that he paid a guy $200 to fix the air bag light and that he was going to go over and demand his money back. He also told me that the seat belts were tucked in behind the interior panels and they could be just pulled out and bolted up. I gave the guy the benefit of the doubt and went home.
After my brake parts came in I installed them without issue even though I had to work in the rain to do it. I wanted this truck on the road and my car is having some issues that need me to park it and work on it some. I have been driving the truck for a couple days and haven't been feeling very well.
Today I decided to pull the interior panels and install the seat belts. Well on the driver's side the retracting part was there but no belt coming out of it and the bracket that goes to the other end of the belt and bolts in the floor was broken and part still bolted to the floor. The passenger side was a little better, all of it was in the panel like he said, however the part where it bolts to the floor was rusted and wouldn't unbolt from the floor so it appears that the anchor was just ripped up out of the floor.
Needless to say I am not real happy right now. However I have titled and registered the truck and he has the signed title to my bike and I do not know if he has titled it yet.

I was driving down the interstate with cruise set at 75 an my truck jerked twice an my cruise cut off. I tried to rest it but it wouldn't. Then I noticed my speedometer wasn't working. Truck will still crank an drive but acts like it has no power an will only at up to 16 psi of boost.

My speedometer stopped working yesterday after i replaced the 2 cruise control buttons on the steering wheel. When i connected the the battery the horn started blasting and I went over tap the horn then it stopped. Then i noticed that the horn did not work anymore. I put back the original cruise control buttons and still did not work .So know instead of fixing the cruise control buttons, I broke the horn and the speedometer while the cruise control is still broken. I checked the fuses and they all are good. What can it be ?

My speedometer is off by around 5mph. When I'm going about 65mph it only reads about 60mph.
How is this corrected? Programming or speedometer cable gear?

My 2002 v10 4x4 with 103k is parked in my garage overnight so its toasty when i leave the house. But I've noticed when it sits out in the cold all day i'll get a intermittin ABS light. i left work one day at the first stop light i had a flashing ABS light. once the light turned green it went away and the system worked fine.
Last night the truck sat out in 5F weather, i remote started it so it was warm inside.. I left home and noticed about a mile down the road the ABS light came on and the speedo dropped, this lasted about 2 sec then came back no issue after that and the abs system is working just fine.
So, my question is what sensor would it be? I'm not 100% on how it works with the excursion. i know my explorer has a sensor in the rear axle and 2 sensors up front. i have not tryed pulling a code as the light doesn't stay..but i may throw the OBD2 reader in the console so i can try to catch it next time?

Speedometer Going Crazy. 2002 Excursion, 5.4, Auto Transmission, 246800 miles. Put key in ignition and immediately noticed no odometer display. Put it in drive, Odometer began to register but SPEEDOMETER fluctuated wildly. Reading the posts as best as I could, I replaced the VSS sensor on Rear Diff, and no change in symptoms. I don't want to replace sensors just to replace them.

I have a 2000 6.8L V10 Ex, and I'm currently working through the last thing on my "to fix" list. The truck has 37" tires (Nitto Mud Grapplers), and at freeway speeds the speedometer is off by 10mph. If it reads 60mph, I'm really going about 70mph.
I thought the solution was to order an SCT flash tuner, so I purchased one with tunes from 5startuning:
**1. SCT 7015 - X4 Flash Device with Choice of 5 Star Tuning Custom Tunes - 5 Star Tuning
I choose the correct Revs per mile for my tire (560), but the speedo is STILL 10mph off at 70mph.
No changes that I made to the tire size or axle ratio made any difference. It always read the same amount off. The SCT X4 flash tuner wasnt able to change the speedo on the 2000 Ex's.
[URL] ....
My question is this: If both of those tuners plug into the exact same port, and use the same parameters, why is it my X4 tuner can't change the speedo, yet this other tuner is able to? It doesn't make any sense to me. If the X4 truly cannot change the speedo of certain model years, there should really be a disclaimer about it. Feels like a bit of a rip off since the only reason I purchased it in the first place was to correct my speedo...

I need the transmission speed sensor for my truck and I am getting a confusing array of Motorcraft and Ford part numbers. I have Motorcraft numbers DY1251 (Turbine Shaft Speed Sensor Assembly) and DY1229 (Transmission Speed Sensor). Not sure what the difference is between the two.
I've been having a recurring problem where, when my speedometer starts wavering, the truck will sometimes jerk, like maybe it's trying to down shift or a stumble of some sort. I've replaced the VSS in the rear diff (with Motorcraft) which cleared up the worst of it, but this problem still persists.

I have a 2000 Excursion V10, I keep blowing the #19 10A miniature fuse while I am going down the road. All gauges and speedometer all of sudden die but the vehicle keeps running until I turn it off. When I try to restart she won't fire until I put a new fuse in.

Just bought an '03 Excursion v10 with ~150,000 miles on it (Saturday morning). About 3/4 of my 1.5 hr drive home, when I hit my first small mountain, and I put my foot into it, the ABS light came on, and the speedo started bouncing around. Same thing on the second hill/mountain.
Then, after driving it on a couple small trips this weekend, and towing my 2500 lb boat home (20 min drive), it behaved fine (no big hills, etc). However, I decided to hookup my backup camera. During the 60 or so minutes that I had it sitting with dome lights on, etc measuring everything up (also trying to figure out how to fit my tool box in the back).
When I tried to start it when I was finished, it would just crank and crank and crank. Every now and then, it would try to catch, but never would. Left it sit for another 10 minutes and it started just fine. However, once it started, the ABS light came on for a little while, then went out.
At first, I thought "oh no... fuel pump". But then I started thinking about the speedo and the ABS light going whacko on the hills. I'm wondering if it's a low voltage issue? I had the alternator checked out today, and it tested fine at 13.9v. However, I've heard that those tests aren't always accurate.

I have read several of the post on here about speedo's acting up, but I'm not finding anything that pertains to my specific problem. A few months ago I bought a 2000 Excursion, it currently has around 179,000 miles on it. When I got it the ABS light was on and this site is actually where I found out to replace the sensor on the rear end to fix that. My problem is that until a few weeks ago even with the ABS light on my speedo worked just fine and then it started acting up every time I hit the brake pedal and then eventually quit working all together and my cruise control light would flash as well as the OD light.
I replaced the sensor in the rear end and also found out about a recall for the cruise control and had that repaired as well. Now the ABS light is no longer on and the cruise light is not flashing, however the OD light still flashes and 95% of the time my speedo does not work at all. On Monday while heading to town it started working, hit the brakes and all was good, set the cruise control and used it all the way to town, but as soon as I hit the brakes the needle started jumping around and went back to zero and stayed there. I have ohmed the sensors and wires from sensors to harness under the hood and all seems good. The only code I can pull with my meter is P0500 which is just a generic code.

2002 e350 7.3 diesel transmission... At 7 miles the speedo began bouncing and truck drops into second. Parked it 30 minutes, stated up no problem until 8 miles and the it started again. Have checked most of the electrical, changed speed sensor and transmission position sensor. Only error code 2-3 rd gear mismatch.

My speedometer does not work. Also, my 4wd high light is on but not engaged. Are the two related? I've looked up speed sensor and it's separate from the actuator for 4wd. Maybe coincidence they stopped working simultaneously? Should I start with the speed sensor?

I have the infamous ABS light & speedo not working on my 2000 Ranger. I replaced the ABS Speed sensor on the rear diff as has been suggested on many posts, but it didn't solve the problem. Did I get a bad part or is there something else I should go after?

'98 F150. the speedometer isn't working, all other gauges are. Where do I start ?
View 13 Replies
so heres whats happening. My 98 ranger speedometer has not been working since I owned it (I am the second owner who got it from a grandpa) and I've replaced the vss sensor two times, got a new connector and gave that a try and still nothing. Yes I've looked for cracks in the wire or any exposed copper, I've looked through many forums and cant figure it out. At first before replacing the vss, my abs and check engine light weren't lit up until i put a new vss sensor on that i got from o'reillys, so then i got another one thinking it was just a bad sensor and still no luck. another thing is when its cold in the morning and i get in my pickup to go to work it will start working once i go over 30 and fluctuate between that and 20 but if i don't accelerate it will not bounce all over the place.

I clearly have some kind of electrical issue. The odometer and speedometer are no longer visible, the digital display on the clock/radio is barely visible (brightness varies day to day) and the abs light is always on. Now the check engine light is always on. I have to be somewhere around 200,000 miles and other than this the car has been a champ! I had Auto Zone check fuses and run a scan but they couldn't detect the problem. One suggestion I was given was input/output sensors.

I just bought a 99 f250 sd 5.4. The speedometer doesn't start working until it reaches about 30 mph. The transmission doesn't shift correctly until the speedometer starts working. I cleaned the speed sensor on the rear end but that didn't work. I don't see any sensors or switches on the tranny other than the neutral safety switch. What it is?

My speedometer, odometer & cruise control quit working and I think the transmission overdrive is also not working on my 95' Aerostar 2wd, 3.0L engine. I replaced the speed sensor that sits above the rear differential, but that didn't work. Wondering if something needs to be reset?

I got my first truck today and it's a 1988 Ford F-150 and it runs great! The only issue is that the speedometer doesn't work and I won't be able to register it until it does. I was wondering what I can try out to maybe fix the issue and if not, how I would replace it. Every other gauge works, it's just the speedometer that isn't. The needle doesn't move at all it just sits at a 0 all the time.
