I have a rattle in my drivers side front hub. I primarily hear it when I hit small bumps. With the hubs locked and in 2wd, the rattle is gone. Could this be just the hubs where replacing them with warn manuals would fix it or is it likely more involved?

View 19 RepliesI have a rattle coming from the drivers front area. I'm not 100% sure but I think it might go away in warm weather. I had a tech drive along with me once a few weeks ago, but we couldn't hear it that afternoon. Yesterday afternoon it warmed up to around 65ish and I couldn't hear it. I only hear it at slow speeds (5-10mph) and only when rolling over light bumps, anything moderate to heavy and it's not discernible.
This is my first try at recording it and I think it sounds a bit less squeaky more rattley in person. Maybe more like a lost screwdriver in the a body panel or engine bay or something Or a loose strut? Or a loose rotor? (doesn't seem possible) Or the short shifter bouncing? (I have a forge SS, and once I was poking around looking for something loose in the engine bay and I jiggled that and the sound seemed close, but I don't see how that would be it.

We've noticed an audible knocking that sounds to be coming from the front drivers side. It only happens at speed (over 30) and doesn't seem to be engine related. I can feel it under my resting foot while driving. I know this is vague but I think it may be enough to get started on figuring this out.
View 14 RepliesMy LS460 recently developed a rattle from the front drivers side. It's triggered more by rumbles/vibrations from an uneven surface rather than speed bumps or large pot holes.
It sounds a bit like a washer vibrating on a metal tray (for what that's worth)!
Interestingly though it gets a LOT worse when the car is in 'Comfort' suspension mode, and is nowhere near as bad in 'Sports' mode. So it seems that having the suspension higher gives this thing more room to rattle.
I noticed in the service history that the front passenger air strut was replaced 30k ago, so I'm worrying that there is a large bill on the horizon.

View 1 RepliesI'm new to the forum and Excursion ownership but was hoping someone could save me some time and aggravation chasing a rattle in my 2004 2wd 6.0 PS. It seems to be coming from the front driver's side since I can feel it through the steering wheel. As of now, it's nothing major since it doesn't seem to affect tracking but I'm afraid it's getting worse.
I'm thinking it's a worn bushing but as I'm less familiar with the vehicle as y'all are, maybe you can point out the weak points that may be causing my issue. I plan on jacking up the front end tomorrow and inspecting for play. I'll let you know what (if anything) I find. Are there any known issues I should be aware of?

View 1 RepliesStarted hearing a squeak from drivers front wheel area when turning right, thought maybe pads might need replacing but they were fine as were the pins. So I checked for play with tire off ground and there was def some play pulling from top to bottom, so that lead me to the front hub, I read some posts about pulling the abs sensor and getting some grease in the the hub bearing so I did that but when I replaced the sensor and spun the hub it was scrubbing on the bearing.?
So I shimmed the sensor with a washer but now the abs light comes on but there doesn't seem to be a squeak when turning right anymore. Any example of doing this and had the sensor scrub? And with the play I would assume I need to plan to replace the hub assembly fairly soon...

My Ex did this to me a few months ago 2 days in a row and then didn't do it again until now...
Battery is almost new and alternator charges fine but every once in a while when it sits it drains the battery. I can hear an audible click and rumble coming from the front end behind the drivers side headlight under the air intake.
I've got a boost coming but I'd like to be able to start her up again to go to work later.
My front dust shield on the driver's side is falling apart and scraping against my rotor. On the passenger side the dust shield is long gone.
My question is do I need the dust shields? Is there any issues without having them?
In a perfect world I'd like to replace them, but I have a feeling that this is going to be one of those dealer only items that's severely overpriced.
Seeing as I have the passenger side shield missing, and I never noticed anything before hand I'm thinking this is an item that might not be necessary.
In the last few months my car has been making this crazy medium-weight rattle sometimes, meaning it doesn't sound like something really light doing it and it doesn't sound like something heavy doing it either. Its "history" went like this:
Noticed this sound that really seemed to be coming from the driver-side front, in the wheel well area, checked it out. Nothing obvious. Had the front of the car on ramps a couple of times, poking, prodding, grabbing/shaking things. All is tight. Then had it on stands; same routine, same results. It got a bit worse over time, though it doesn't ALWAYS do it! Sometimes it's quiet forever (on 90-minute drive last week, nothing). This evening, out for 20 minutes, lotsa racket. So it comes and goes. Nothing under the hood seems amiss, either.
At first it seemed to only be present when moving, like something rubbing or dragging on a tire. Nope. Then it seemed to be related to engine speed, like some under-hood component checking out and starting to fuss. That seems not to be the case anymore, either. Now, I've been able to discern that it's something come loose and VIBRATING (I'm pretty sure -- it just sounds like that), but I don't know what yet. I now hear it at idle, sitting at a light (sometimes) and it's definitely worse on rougher pavement than on smoother pavement.
A while back I realized that it must not be coming from outside and under the car after all, because putting the window/s down results in not being able to hear it at all, rather than being able to hear it better. This is true even at 5 mph, rolling along on a quiet street entirely for diagnostic purposes.
Earlier this evening (during the 20-minute out n' about), I note that it's not coming from the driver side anymore; it's more like the whole front of the car. Really seems to be under the dash. When I first figured out that it's NOT outside/underneath, I took off the panel under that side (three Torx screws) and poked around. Didn't find anything obviously loose, etc. I've ruled out the glovebox, its door, and the center console, by holding on to each while rolling. The sound is not quite in the correct spot to be from any of these, either.
After driving our 2013 Passat for 215 miles, we noticed that there was a rattling noise coming from the left front wheel area but only at slow speeds (under 10 mph). The noise disappeared at higher speeds. Today, we took the car to the dealership but they could not find anything wrong.
View 4 RepliesI have a 2013 Hyundai Elantra Limited and have noticed a rattle in the front driver's door area near the Dash. It's hard to pinpoint where exactly it is coming from. The rattle can be heard even on smoothish roads and sounds like a little screw or something else is loose or rubbing against something. I checked that sunglasses holder and made sure nothing was in there but the rattle is still there.
View 55 RepliesI've only had the Ex for a few months so I'm still learning... After a trip to Orlando this weekend, I noticed a very faint odor of differential fluid from the driver's side front and rear wheels.
Nothing on the passenger's side. I've inspected the pinions and axles and found no wet areas at all, so I'm a little perplexed. The wheels and axle housings were pretty cool considering a 5 hour round trip.
I was also wondering if what I am smelling is due to the axle vent hoses?

View 3 RepliesI have a 2004 FX4 and have a very annoying rattle up in the driver's side dash area near the windshield. This happens every time it gets to be winter. The odd thing is, that it will sometimes go away but when I hit an uneven surface such as a railroad crossing, I hear a loud "pop" near that area. Then it will rattle non stop. I don't know if it is the wiper cowling area or what? IMO Ford's design of that area is crap.
View 11 RepliesI have a 2001 F-150 Supercab with the V-6. This past weekend it developed some strange noise best described as a rattle or vibration that sounds like it is coming from under the driver's side dash possibly somewhere right behind the instrument cluster. May even sounds a little like a "grinding" noise - like two plastic gears not agreeing with each other, but I don't know of anything under there that could make that noise. I have opened the hood and listened from there with my wife pressing the gas to make the noise start, but can't hear anything from outside the truck.
It is not constant, but starts as soon as I give it a little gas, even before I put it in drive. It's a little worse when it is in drive. I have turned the air on and off, turned the steering wheel, pressed the brake, etc, and it doesn't appear to be related to anything obvious. I have stuck my hand under the dash and can't find anything obviously loose.
Have a 15 250 diesel and my drivers side door has a rattle in it. Seems to be coming from around the area were the mirror buttons are. Removed that little panel and applied some silicone around the edges and seemed to work for a bit then back to noise. Seems to go away when cab heats up good or warm outside.
