Ford Excursion :: Noise From Front End?

Mar 29, 2014

My Ex developed a speed sensitive squeal from the drivers front last night and I am not sure whats up so I'm looking for some input..... First off it has warn manual lock outs on it, the squeal kinda sounds like what rubber against rubber or wet rubber sounds like. there is no heat anywhere I can feel its not pulling side to side..... it usually comes on after I hit a small bump and goes away under 10mph. But, if I lock the drivers side hub it goes away no matter what the speed, also with both the hubs in free wheel it will go away if I engage the transfer case while its squealing......last summer it got a complete brake job, all ball joints were replaced and axle joints were done.

Ford Excursion :: Front End Clunking Noise?

I've had a front end clunk best felt on the floorboards at very slow speeds on uneven ground. I've read for a month on this site on this issue and have replaced the ball joints and sway bar end links with Moog parts. New shocks also. Well I've improved but its still there. I cannot budge the trac bar bolts with breaker bar. The axle u bolts seemed loose so I tightened them but I'm not sure of the torque specs on them. What are the torque specs on the u bolts and where to go from here?

Ford Excursion :: Popping Noise From Front End Periodically

A few months ago I would periodically hear a "pop" from the front end. Most of the time when doing a slow turn or backing. As I just had completed a V/B swap I focused on that. I never could find anything wrong/loose. It seemed to go away for awhile but now has returned. I put the truck back up in the air. Checked sway bar links/mounts, ball joints, shocks, and hub bearings. Still no luck.

A mechanic friend suggested bad shock. In the last two days it had really increased in frequency. This morning I was looking around as I was at work and I noticed that the steering link bar from the box to the passenger side arm was movable by hand. How much play should this have? Got a big trip planned pulling the trailer coming up very soon and I need to get this fixed fast so that its safe.

Ford Excursion :: Whistling Noise Coming From Front Axle

I am having a whistling noise coming from my front axle... It only happens when the hubs are locked and in 4WD when hubs are unlocked and in 4wd there is no whistling noise... I know they are vacuum operated for the auto hubs... We just got a good snow fall the past few days and have had to have the lockers locked to stay straight... Also can I keep the hubs locked and cruise and 55 to 60 mph ? or is it not good for the locking hubs...

Ford Excursion :: Humming Noise On Front End After Driving 350 Miles

The front end on the ex started humming really bad today after driving 350 miles to Memphis Tennessee. When I noticed the humming I pulled over and unlocked the hubs thinking the front axle is low on gear oil. No change when back on the interstate. If I turn right at highway speeds the noise completely goes away. While driving straight its pretty loud. The more I turn left the louder it gets. Just had the front end apart to do all ball joints tie rod ends etc. the hubs looked great and didnt have any play at all. The noise happens between 40-65 mph. After 70 mph the noise goes away. Doesn't go away when I let of the pedal, hit the brakes, put in neutral while driving, or accelerate. Could it be the hubs?

Ford Excursion :: Clunking Noise - Front Sway Bar End Links

I plan on replacing as I have a clunk happening. Thought I'd try here first.

Is there a brand that's better? 1Aauto has OEM. Is there a brand that's better or makes a difference?

Or is a front sway bar end link a front sway bar end link?

Ford Excursion :: Grinding Noise In Front End On Left Side

Had a grinding noise in my front end, left side. Found the hub was bad so got it replaced. Now I still have a grinding noise that comes and goes. If I hit a bump, it starts the grinding noise but nothing constant. Had the front end checked and nothing was obvious. Was trying different things and when I put it in 4WD, with the switch on the dash, the noise goes away. What to try next?

Ford Excursion :: Clunking Noise From The Left Front Going Over Bumps

I need to replace the rubber axle bumper guards. I have a clunking noise from the left front going over bumps. Troubleshooting I found the left front axle bumper guard is missing, right side is missing chunks and dry rotted. I had a question about how they attach. The one that is missing looks like a rusted bolt snapped off. Is it safe to assume a bolt goes right thru the center of the bumper guard into the frame? Couldn't tell on the right side it is in bad shape. Right front bolt may have sheared off on the bottom and just held in on the top by what is left.

Ford Excursion :: Front End Noise - Inner Seal Dangling On Stub Shaft

For what it's worth I have been feeling a bit of a tug for 3 weeks. That's about 150 miles or 5 times driving. Installed new sway bar damper.

Pulling into the driveway the heard a ting, and look to find the inner seal of the hub spinning on the stub shaft!

An exploded view of this front end hub/bearing/brake assembly?

Ford Excursion :: Clunking Noise In Front End Only Happening During Suspension Travel

I have a noise in the front end that is only happening during suspension travel. It is really bad on bumpy roads. I thought it was my sway-bar end links but they are a year old and tight. I have checked the shocks and they are tight. It sounds like a clunking noise. Could the front drive axles be making this noise while not locked in?

Ford Excursion :: 2003 7.3L - Random Whirring Or Squealing Noise From The Front

I am now getting a random 'whirring' or 'squealing' noise from the front. When it starts, I feel some vibration in the steering wheel and floorboard and for sure can hear it. Starts on it own at random, sometimes when I hit a bump in the road. Stops at random, sometimes when hitting a bump in the road. Lasts for different lengths of time. Always stops when coming to a stop at about ~15 mph. Seems to change pitch ever so slightly if turning when it is 'whirring' or 'squealing'.

Ford Excursion :: Grinding / Clunk Noise And General Loose Feeling From Front End

But I'm still getting a grinding/clunk noise and general loose feeling from the front end. The only play I can feel is when I grab the u-joint/knuckle and pull up and down on it. I also noticed the seal at the end of the axle shaft tube is not there on 1 side... would this lack of seal cause the looseness?

Ford Excursion :: 2004 - Rattling Noise Coming From Front Driver Side?

I'm new to the forum and Excursion ownership but was hoping someone could save me some time and aggravation chasing a rattle in my 2004 2wd 6.0 PS. It seems to be coming from the front driver's side since I can feel it through the steering wheel. As of now, it's nothing major since it doesn't seem to affect tracking but I'm afraid it's getting worse.

I'm thinking it's a worn bushing but as I'm less familiar with the vehicle as y'all are, maybe you can point out the weak points that may be causing my issue. I plan on jacking up the front end tomorrow and inspecting for play. I'll let you know what (if anything) I find. Are there any known issues I should be aware of?

Ford Excursion :: Clicking Noise Coming From Front Right Side Tire - Excessive Play In Axle

I have had a Clicking noise on my 2000 x 4x4 since 6 months coming from the front right side tire noticeable over rough roads or over bumps and I went on a journey starting with ford dealer to almost all well recognized service centers and every body says your front suspension is ok and no one seems to know where it is coming from. I thought it was my hub bearing since it fails almost every year but when I was changing the bearing, I noticed a big Excessive play in axle.

See video : My AXLE Shaft - YouTube

Also I noticed oil mixed with grease the grease is prawny with a reddish sort of color or that is some thing else.

See photos ....

Any way after replacing the hub Bearing with a used one and butting every thing together I went on a test drive. Noticed that the vehicle drive line is not right the car seems to wonder and the noise still there so i didn't get far i came right back and park my x then a funny burned oil smell was present.

Is it some thing i did wrong or is it bad situation gone worst ?

Ford Excursion :: Front End Vibration At 55 Mph

My new to me 04 X has a fairly bad vibration that starts around 55 mph. At about 60-65 it sort of goes away, but not completely. The wheels are 20" F-250 wheels ( 2006 ) with spacers/adapters. These were on it when I bought it. I had the wheels re-balanced and checked the ball joints. This made no difference.

This is not what I would call the death wobble, just a bad vibration in the front end. The steering wheel does shake/vibrate a little, but so does most of the truck while it is doing it.

I have 2 people emailing me about buying their grille now.

Ford Excursion :: Clunking From Front End?

I recently ran into the "clunking from the front end" problem with my Excursion. It is 2WD but this might apply to all. I had the clunk under my left foot while driving over a series of small bumps. It was a rapid clunking. One big bump, or things like speed bumps did not produce the noise or feel in my feet. Only rapid irregularities in the road at 35 mph or greater made it happen.

It made me crazy trying to figure it out. I tried everything. Both sets of swaybar links, shock mounts, track bar mounts, made sure brake calipers were tight, you name it. It showed its ugly head every time I hit small bumps in succession at speed. Even tried to re-seat the coil springs but that didn't work! My front bearings made NO noise. There was NO play in them by hand while up on jacks. I had taken them out and repacked them while replacing front brakes. At my wits' end, I went for a "hail mary" shot. I purchased new bearings. Took it all apart, packed the new bearings and replaced.

Low and behold! The damn "clunking" is now gone! So, in short, IF you have a clunking that nothing else seems to fix, just try replacing the bearings even IF you feel NO play in them. I couldn't believe that bearings that felt so tight by hand would be causing such clunking.
