Ford Excursion :: Mpg In 4wd And 2wd?
Feb 19, 2015
With winter in full effect what kind of mpg do you get on your rig while the 4wd is engaged? I'm getting 9 to 10 with 11-12 in 2wd in cold weather and 13 to 14 in warm weather 2wd

View 14 RepliesI bought 3 new keys for my X and can't get them to program right. I've found a few different sets of instructions and tried them all and nothing
View 2 RepliesYes, I have read the Vibration sticky. I am hoping for the experience of the group as well. Last summer on a road trip I had a horrible vibration at speeds of 70 or so. I had the tires re-balanced and it really worked.
I now have a vibration at 60 to 65 very constant at that speed. Has me thinking speed sensitive, but it also increases when breaking through that range, speeding up through that range and coasting. Based on the chart I'm looking at speed sensitive but also torque sensitive.
Should I try to rebalance first?
2000 V10 X vibrates from 40-55MPH when OD is on. When OD is off, significantly less vibration - very minor between 40-50MPH. Bad OSS?
I had codes for misfires on #4 and #8. I replace the spark plugs and coil packs on all 10 cylinders and codes changed to P0354/P0358 - primary/secondary circuit. Wondering if that is contributing to it.
I did the full reset process on the PCM. Codes cleared throughout the entire process. But once I stopped and restarted truck, codes came back.
My thinking is to get a replacement PCM first. I haven't done a lot looking over the wires to #4,8 coil packs. cursory look they seem to be fine.
Friends Is it possible to convert 2wd X to 4wd? How hard it's going to be?
My X is 2000 v10 4wd limited with 160k hard miles. And the new X is 2004 v10 2wd limited with 30k miles...
My plan is swap all the goodies from the 2000 to the almost new 2004.. How big is the fabrication work ???
Why am I getting at best 14 mpg. I drive 80% highway. I have 05 6.0 powerstroke 4x4. 285/75r16 non lifted 65psi. I never get over 68 mph. I see a lot of post and people are getting 17. I ran diesel keen silver through last tank still didn't do anything. My ficm puts out 48.5 constant. My delta between oil temp never gets over 5 degrees. Would stiction cause lower mpg? When first crank it rump rumps a couple times and lines out. I ordered Rev x should be here in next few days. How do I tell what flash for ficm. I read that if it has latest flash it could get bad mileage. I would like to get at least 16mpg.
View 14 RepliesSo I bought a ford X with no rear A/C. I love the X but it does get pretty warm in the back during the summer. I believe it was a fleet vehicle as it has a bench in the front. How to cool it down back there? Also have the same prob in the winter but I am going to order a Maradyne heater for that.
View 9 RepliesFour wheel drive will not come on, no light on dash or engaging. Some times light on dash will flash.
View 12 RepliesSo a few weeks ago my remote quit working. I assumed it was the battery so I replaced it and it's no better. Before I order a new remote is there anything else I should check? Am I going to be able to program the new one without this first one?
View 14 RepliesA few weeks ago I hit a large pothole while going around a slight curve at about 55 mph. I heard a loud pop and the truck jumped to the left. About a week later I starting noticing some vibrations. It happens when I'm going more then 35 or so and when I hit a bump or unsmooth surface and it will keep vibrating until I hit another bump, the other way to make it stop is to slow down to less then 20. I can feel the vibration pulsing less as I slow down utility it stops meaning it's definitely speed related not engine related.
So I took it to the shop. The found the passenger side front (the part that hit the pothole) shock was leaking, upper ball joint was toast (a lot of play) and the outer tie rod was loose (not as bad as the ball joint but bad enough). And the bump stop I installed about 7 or 8 months ago was gone.
I picked up the Ex yesterday after having everything replaced (did the lower ball joint as well, I figured might as well once it's all taken apart). While driving today, the video ration is still there. So I pulled into the nearest gas station and took a look at the front end. I noticed the driver side hub is still locked (even though it's on auto, probably have a leak in the vacuum line somewhere). So I pulled both auto hubs just for the heck of it and kept on driving. Now I barely feel the vibration.
So the question is, is my front differential causing the vibration? I don't believe it's the hubs, when it was at the shop I personally (and the mechanic) shook the wheels right and left and up and down and besides for the play in passenger side wheel from the ball joint, everything else seemed tight. I recently did the u joint on the same wheel and the stabilizer bar bushings. This is my work vehicle so when it really slows me down when it's in the shop.
I was driving around town yesterday and everything is good until i get ready to go somewhere this morning and i noticed a small oil leak has started. What is leaking here and what i need to do to fix it?
View 6 RepliesI keep reading through threads and I see multiple people saying the speaker size is 6x8 and I see a bunch also say they are 5x7? Which is it? I just ordered 3 seats of 6x8 speakers from amazon.... Hoping I don't have to return them.
View 6 RepliesMy Excursion has had an issue for about a week now. the 4x4 will not light when I put it in hi or low. I do this by stopping the vehicle, putting the vehicle in neutral and turning the switch on the dash. I tried to turn the manual hubs but it is not marked like in the owners manual so I don't know if Clockwise is manual or automatic and / or vise versa.
I was diagnosing an issue that I think is related to the $XD feature which is when I turn the wheel hard to the left or to the right, I get a stuttering of the front wheels. At low speed the wheels will not turn at all and the steering wheel kicks back. When driving straight there is no issue at all. All of this started at the same time.
I just put new plugs in and changed the fuel filter. I also hooked it up to a ecm reader to see if there where any faults and it does not have any. I reset the computer just he same. But for some reason I can't get it going over 30 mph and when i floor it. It just doesn't go anywhere. At first it did read faults in the 6 plug but I didn't have a check engine light on i just replaced the coil and plug but now after I did everything I cant get above 30 and its scary. I just don't know what to do?
It does idle normally. As for the fuel pressure i took the filter off and turned it over and fuel runs through fine from the tank. I checked the wiring and it looks ok. No codes are present. This just started it happened a long time ago but after I changed the fuel filter it worked fine so I changed it again thinking it was the problem again but after i did it the problem still persists. I don't have any check engine light on either....
I don't need the high performance shocks...but I would certainly like competent quality shocks...what would you say?
View 14 RepliesGot in the truck this morning and the windows won't go down. The rear pop out windows don't work either. I've tried the doors themselves, I've tried the window lock switch, and I've given the fuses a half look but need to really get into them.
View 8 RepliesI just put new seals in both front hubs because they were leaking. Now I have good readings when vacuum is applied. When I switch to 4wd the vacuum in hubs goes to about 15 in hg for about 30 seconds or so and my 4wd engages. After the 30 seconds the vacuum is released, I believe that is normal.
Now though my 4wd will not disengage. I get no vacuum pulse when I switch to 2wd, gauge stays at 0 in hg. I'm pretty sure a 5 in hg or so vacuum pulse is required to release hubs....is this correct? Would I be correct that the vacuum solenoid could be the issue or its connection?
Both locking hubs are in great shape and I spliced a vacuum gauge between hub and frame vacuum hose to get my readings. I drove it for 10 min hoping the hubs would disengage but they never did.
2003 Excursion won't shift into 1st or 2nd; P,R,N,D all work fine though. I checked the fluid and the level seems fine. (probly needs to be replaced though...) The truck runs brilliantly, but I just noticed this last weekend that she won't shift down into 2nd or 1st manually. We drove up to the top of a lava dome and I was gonna shift down for the drive down and it wouldn't go.
140k on it if I remember right.
My new to me 04 X has a fairly bad vibration that starts around 55 mph. At about 60-65 it sort of goes away, but not completely. The wheels are 20" F-250 wheels ( 2006 ) with spacers/adapters. These were on it when I bought it. I had the wheels re-balanced and checked the ball joints. This made no difference.
This is not what I would call the death wobble, just a bad vibration in the front end. The steering wheel does shake/vibrate a little, but so does most of the truck while it is doing it.
I turn my cruise on and then attempt to set it , nothing happens , doesn't set, no light , nothing. I hit coast and the light comes on but still doesn't hold. Should the light come on when cruise is turned on or set? I checked the master cylinder switch and it's not wet. I also did the self diagnostic test and got nothing but the initial first light blink.
View 4 RepliesTrying to get my original auto hubs to unlock. Both are stuck locked. The dials turn but they won't disengage. Installing warn premium hubs tomorrow and the instructions say to unlock the hubs first. How can I do this if you can't unlock them?
