they don't have any specifically for the Excursion I am thinking that the shortbox 250/350's probably are too long for the excursion.
I am looking to mount a viair tank and compressor on my truck, I was thinking underneath on the frame. Have any pics?
View 14 RepliesI have an 01 6.8L v10 Limited 2wd with 143K. I have had it for about 3 months and have noticed a raw gas smell sometimes at the back of the vehicle. I come home from work, get out walk to the back and can smell it. Noticed it once or twice while at a stop light with windows down.
I have looked at some of the other post about this and eliminated some of the options , I think. There are not any trouble or pending codes when scanned. The gas mileage around town is about 13.5 mpg. Pulled all the spark plugs and they look good. Performance seems good to me being that I have only had it for a few months. Idle is smooth.
Smell is definitely from the rear / gas tank area. I have test driven it down the street and then start checking immediately without finding anything obvious. I do not see or smell anything under the hood. I have looked at the fill tubes and they are not wet or rusted. I have not seen any drips or wet areas looking around it immediately after driving. Just the raw fuel smell at the rear.
So I think it is something in, on or with the tank...?? Also can the metal skid plate/box be removed from around the tank without the tank itself dropping or is it all one big unit that drops down?
On a recent long drive home through some very hot weather, I noticed a strong smell of gas at the back of the truck. Now, I've caught a whiff of gas before the trip but it was always faint. Figured it was some gas that dripped on fill up.
At a rest area, I go and look around see no leaks and finally check the fuel cap. Lots of pressure trapped. I ended up leaving the cap off the rest of the run home. Can't find a cause.
So my 7.3 started sputtering and lost power, died on the side of the road. I wasn't far from home put about 8 gallon of diesel in the tank with a couple of fuel jugs and it fired right up.
Gauge was reading 1/8 of a tank and low fuel light did not come on. (low fuel light comes on when you start) Gauge came up to about 1/2 after putting fuel in.
What happened? Gauge was always reliable and low fuel light always did work. Only work done to fuel system was had new tank straps put on a couple of months ago.
I have a 2006 F250 c/c LB and I am curious, how much fuel is left in the tank when the low fuel light comes on?
View 8 RepliesThis van has had a couple of fuel pumps, no surprise there, and i need to look through my paperwork and find out how many miles the current one has on it, but it has the STRANGEST habit I've ever had on any vehicle. Starts fine, runs fine, no fuel pump noise when van is running, and when you turn it off, the fuel pump creeks on and off for several minutes.
I mean a strange creaking noise almost like a shorted electrical device or a vehicle's brakes when you park it on a hill and the breaks creak as it settles into place. I'm probably doing a lousy job of describing this but i don't know how else to describe it!
ALSO, if you lay under the van and wait til it stops creaking, you can tap the bottom of the tank and it will creak for a few more seconds. You can tap repeatedly and make it creak more. Is it about to explode? Can i trust it on a road trip?

My problem: For the first year I owned the truck, everything ran fine and it started up really quickly even after it sat for a few days or a few weeks. I have since, for about the last year or so, had to crank it for 30-45 seconds to get it to start. This all started around the time my fuel pump went out. I replaced it with an Airtex fuel pump from Autozone. I also installed a glass in line filter before the carb in front of the distributor.
I noticed that after about 4-6 hours, the fuel had drained out of the filter and that's when I would have to crank it forever to get it going. It also seems like there is no fuel in the carb as it doesn't even try to start when it first gets cranked. I thought this was a bad pump, so I bought a new one last week and tried it again. Sure enough after about 4-6 hours, everything is empty again and it takes forever to start it. So it's not a bad pump, or so I think.
The other day I backed it into my driveway and left it, something I never do. I checked about 4 days later and there was still fuel in the filter. This makes me think that gravity is making it drain back to the tank.
Is there something that would cause this? Also I have found a one way fuel check valve online that is supposed to remedy this type of problem. Do they work for this situation? Or is there something else I should be doing to fix this? It has taken a bit of a toll on my starting system having to crank so long all the time. I have so far had to replace my starter, starter solenoid, and all the battery cables, starter cable, terminals, etc. due to excessive wear.

I have a leak in my rear fuel tank, the front tank has been blocked off and is not used, The leak is at the seam of the two part tank, once removed is there a way to seal this? or should I just replace it?
I have a tank that's been out of my truck for a couple years. I want to clean it up real good inside before re-installing. Are there any products you can recommend that will give a deep clean on the inside to remove any gunk and some slight rust? Also, is there a product that should be used to coat the inside of the tank after it's been deep cleaned?
View 2 RepliesI am unable to get fuel delivery from tanks to engine in normal operation. I can however get pumps working with jumper wire to them. It will start with ether but not stay running on it's own. Could this be a relay or something in tfi thing ?

View 2 RepliesI have a 2004 F150 XLT 5.4 L 79,000 miles. Yesterday i was driving home turned a corner and the low fuel light came on and the fuel gauge is well below empty. I had approx 1/2 tank of fuel when it happened. I have since filled tank all the way but the gauge will not move and low fuel light stays on. Everything else is working fine! I have never run the truck low enough on fuel to make the dummy light come on.....

At first it seemed like the back tank was siphoning from the front tank. Now I have fuel coming out of my front tank filler neck. View 2 RepliesI recently purchased a used 1999 F250 Super Duty with about 150k miles on it. The truck runs great and I have no complaints but there are a few things that need to be taken care of. It looks like there is a very small fuel leak where the filler neck ties into the rubber hose that runs into the fuel tank. There is a thin film of diesel along the side of the tank, on the leaf spring, the air bag and various other places. Nothing is dripping. I want to drop the tank and replace the hose. The Haynes manual says to depressurize the whole fuel system--is this really necessary if I don't plan on doing anything to the system aside from dropping the tank?

What is the most likely culprit for this? Can't get the bed off, or get the strap bolts loose, so I haven't been able to "eyeball" anything, yet.
View 3 RepliesMy hitch receiver is looking pretty strange lately and I want to take it down, grind it and repaint it. While crawling underneath the truck today, I noticed that it appears the bolts holding the hitch are kind of covered by the Tank Skid Plate.
I did some searching, and from what I've gathered, it appears that To drop the skid plate means to also drop the tank as they are one unit.
Is this true? Is there any way for me to get the hitch receiver out without messing around with the gas tank?
Today I noticed my fuel gauge giving a low fuel light. I had just fill up 50 miles earlier. Stop fr fuel anyway and could only put 1 3/4 gallons in so the tank is full.
After fueling the gauge went up off the low fuel mark about what I had put in. The only other consideration was the batteries were down and charged last night.
Question. What do I look at first?
Someone stabbed a hole in my gas tank to steal my gas i'm guessing. Is there a safe and correct way to repair the tank, or do I need to get a new one?
View 5 RepliesI have owned my 2005 v10 ex since 60000 miles. Have had many dependable family road trips and love my truck.
Recently it has started puking coolant and the overflow tank smells like exhaust. The oil cap has some coolant sludge on it. But there is no coolant mixed with the oil. Or oil in the coolant.
I am pretty certain these are the signs of failing head gaskets. The truck has 193000 miles on it now.
Want to keep it on course. But keep it reliable. So do I buy new engine or do I just replace head gaskets?
1996 F-150 5.0... So I bought this truck a couple months ago for a really good price and its my regular vehicle that I use daily. While driving I switched tanks from the front to rear and when i reached my destination i noticed that fuel spilled from the cap, I opened the cap and fuel overflowed. I've read in forums saying that its the Fuel Pressure Regulator or the Fuel Tank Selector Valve . It still drives and runs fine, but I would like to know which part its specifically causing the problem?
