Ford Excursion :: Humming Noise Between 45 - 55 MPH / Comes And Goes About Every Second
Jul 22, 2012
My Ex just started making this humming noise between 45 - 55 MPH -- beyond 55 MPH and the noise is gone. The humming noise comes and goes about every second and disappear if I get off the gas. I'm having difficulty determining where the noise is coming from. Seems like is coming from the front end area or under the hood. Not really sure.
What could be causing this? For what its worth, my tires were recently rotated and balanced. No vibration on the steering wheel and truck drives straight.

The front end on the ex started humming really bad today after driving 350 miles to Memphis Tennessee. When I noticed the humming I pulled over and unlocked the hubs thinking the front axle is low on gear oil. No change when back on the interstate. If I turn right at highway speeds the noise completely goes away. While driving straight its pretty loud. The more I turn left the louder it gets. Just had the front end apart to do all ball joints tie rod ends etc. the hubs looked great and didnt have any play at all. The noise happens between 40-65 mph. After 70 mph the noise goes away. Doesn't go away when I let of the pedal, hit the brakes, put in neutral while driving, or accelerate. Could it be the hubs?

I just bought an 04 excursion with the 6.0 diesel. I took a trip to vegas and noticed a humming/ vibration about 55-65mph only in overdrive. i have checked u joints and they look good. The x does have a small lift its the bracket kit with stock springs. What gets me is, I don't notice it driving in town only in overdrive at highway speed.

So it sounds like a whine at low RPMs, but once I get going it goes away. Popped the hood while she was running and took the filter housing loose and you can hear it through the intake... It's all stock....

I went to throw my truck in 4wd the other day and now I'm experiencing a humming noise, but only when in 4 wheel. It's only noticeable when I'm in 4 wheel and I'm off the accelerator or coming to a stop, soon as I accelerate, come to a stop, or take it out of 4wd the noise disappears.
Only other symptom was I tried putting it in 4-low the other day and all it did for a good minute was rev up a bunch, but I switched it back to 2wd and 4-hi and low worked after that. 4wd does still work just fine, it's just buzzing and it's annoying the heck out of me
I did a search, not just on this forum either, all I keep getting is the old "buzzing 'til I put it in 4wd" topic. Hoping to get an answer before I start dropping money trying to find it on my own. I'm not used to these new-style 4wd systems so I'm lost for knowledge here.

Ok, been trying to track down an odd humming noise on my 08 f150 CC 4x4, 4.6l. kind of sounds like a hub bearing going. starts around 25-30mph and never quites down.
Turning left or right to load each side of the suspension doesn't change tone or intensity of the noise, different pavements doesn't change Tone or intensity. Hubs are tight, CVs are tight, 4x4 works as it should. Cant figure this sound out and it's quite loud.

Noticed the other day when I was driving on the highway my truck started humming when I was accelerating past 30. From a dead stop to 30 its fine, but after it starts humming. Its only when I have my foot on the pedal. When I let off, it stops. The sound is coming from the rear/under.

I have a 2003 ford escape (V6 Limited/Automatic) that just hit the 145,000 mile mark. With routine maintenance and minor repairs, I am hoping to make the car last at least 200,000 miles. I currently have an annoying, intermittent problem that I have not been able to solve on my own. The car has no performance issues, but when the vehicle come to a stop while in drive (at a red light, etc) the car make a low humming noise that is coming from the front of the vehicle. The noise stops once I get the vehicle back in motion or when I throw the car into neutral. The humming also changes when I turn the steering wheel, but I think that might have to do with the load on the engine changing. The only thought I have is the torque converter, but I am not sure how I would test or rule that out.

First off I have a 1997 F-150 4.6 with 205,000 miles on it.. stock engine and tranny. It's been a great truck and never given me any major problems. But recently something under the hood (wish i could be more specific) makes a really loud HUMMING noise (almost sound like a trumpet). For example- say im driving on the highway and i let off the gas, this humming noise will appear and it is very loud, but right when i give the engine some gas the humming goes away.
Or also when I am driving through town, when i come to a stop light, let off the gas to apply the breaks, this humming noise will come about. what i have to do is stick the truck in neutral and give it a big rev (which i do like hearing my exhaust so it isn't always annoying) and then it stops. note though, it doesnt happen every single time i let off the gas, however it is pretty frequent.
do yall think this is in the air intake system? thatd be my only guess because when i rev the engine it quits, but one thing is it sounds like it comes more from the passenger side of the truck, and it seems to occur more often when the temperature outside is cold. im completely stumped by this one, ive never heard anything like it.

1999 ford expedition 5.4L ....I have been hearing a loudish (I can hear it in the cab) humming noise coming from the engine bay. I don't hear it when the truck is cold (1 to 5 minutes after starting), seems to get louder at it its peak (the more I drive). When i open the hood, the humming is coming from the intake. I am a pretty handy guy, just at my witts end right now....not sure, but I was thinking brake booster?

Getting a pretty loud "whirring" or humming noise from under the car while driving 30+ mph. It seems like a wheel bearing noise, but coming from directly under the center console area. My thoughts are either the driveshaft center support or the transfer case, I can't find much on it though.

1996 Exp 4.0L OHV ... Wife drove it the other day, said made loud humming noise, then engine stalled. Drove it this am, did it to me too while idling in D with foot on brake... humms for about 1 min, and then stalls the engine... If I rev the engine, was still doing it... but came and went when I was driving then till I got her home...
I know there is a black plastic cap that makes a similar noise but not as loud, this seems like something else... and the fact it stalled the truck is bothersome... it started up then fine, but still. The only thing that is the same as when wife had it, is that both of these days are like under 10 degrees outside... So, me thinks MAP? or something else that doesn't like these REALLY cold temps? or??

My front axle is making a groaning like humming noise when the truck is cold and first starting to drive it. It does it when speeds are at 30 mph and under and goes away when putting it in 4WD. It sounds like the hubs but I'm not sure. The dealer hasn't been able to duplicate it because they haven't kept it overnight. I'm just wondering if this happen to the truck, was it fixed and what was the issue. Like I said, I think it may be a vacuum issue to the hubs, but not sure.

I recently noticed my brand new truck with 5k miles has been making a humming /vibrating noise when shifting and when RpMs are above 2k. What this could be? It's a 2014 F150 stx 3.7 ....

I just bought a truck, it has a whining noise while accelerating, stops while letting on the gas, does not do it in neutral even if i rev up the engine. Only whines while there is some force on it, ie.. accelerating, or going up a hill at any angle, and does it from about 10-15mph- atleast 60mph.

My 6.7 makes a humming noise when i shut down my engine. Starts a little loud and gets softer at the end. it last maybe for a minute. But here's the catch if i stick the key back in the ignition it stops and as soon as i pull it out it starts again.

Two things I have just noticed on my '09 with aprox. 120,000 miles.
Starting at about 45 mph, I am getting a humming noise
Doesn't get louder as speed goes up either, stays the same 45-75 mph
Have Bridgestone Ecopia EP422 tires, did rotation, noise did not change location
Noise does go away gradually when slowing down to a stop (after I have reached 45)
I am deaf on my left side, this is hard to tell where it is coming from
Second is this really odd brake pedal clink / pop noise. When brake pedal is depressed fully to the floor, car ON or OFF, there is a clunk
See attached links to the noise.....
Brake pads / rotors are like new, plenty of life on them. I did have the inverter pump replaced per the recall (I read somewhere this could be related?)

I just installed a cold air intake on my 01 f150 with a 5.4 and as soon as i started it after the install there is a loud humming coming from the intake but with some throttle it goes away. ive looked around on some of the other threads that suggest the iac valve usually causes this humming noise but why would it go bad with the install?? also i broke iac breather trying to remove it from the old hose to install with the new hose so i just connected the new hose directly to the inlet behind the intake until i can get another one to replace it. could this be causing the humming as well??

So I changed my fuel filter today and everything went as planned. I replaced it with a Ford OEM filters. I drained the filter housing under the truck by turning the yellow thing 1/4 turn. I then used a wrench and changed the filter. I put the new gasket on there and and tightened back down until it mechanically stopped. I then changed the one under the hood. I then did the bleed procedure 10 times and the truck fired right up.
Now for the reason with the post. I am getting a humming noise from the lower filter. I can find the issue. The yellow thing if fully seated closed and the housing is tightened as far as it can go. Under the hood, both lines are snug and on there properly. I can't figure out what is causing the humming.
The truck fires right up and the noise seems to go away, but I get the humming noise each time I turn the key on. I know something isn't right. I drove the truck around the block and didn't get any codes, but I have to drive it tomorrow and I don't want to risk damage to the truck.Thoughts on things I should try?

2011 F-250 Lariat with 38,000 miles. What is the cause or source of humming or buzzing noise from the under the hood that starts once I turn the truck off and close the door? Lasts from 3-4 minutes and only started noticing it in the last two thousand miles or so.
