Ford Excursion :: Howl At Idle Only
May 29, 2012
OK so I had two bad coils replaced today [URL] ....
Picked up the truck from the shop and it ran PERFECT. Driving home it started pouring rain. Got off the highway and stopped at the light and I hear a loud howl . When I give it gas, the howl goes away.
When I come to a complete stop and idle it howls again. I get home and park it and it still howls even in park. Rev it up just the slightest bit and the howl goes away... Really hope its just the water from the road that isn't playing nice and it will clear up on its own...

I have 140,000 miles on my 2005 F-150 and for the past year I have noticed a somewhat high-pitch whistle or howling sound coming from either the front or underneath. The pitch and volume continuously varies as though it is just tire howl, but I just changed all four tires and no results. It gets much louder at about 65 mph and 78 mph, but I don't hardly hear it at any other speed. My brother says it's just a wind whistle, but I strongly disagree as it doesn't change when i drive against or with a strong wind. I rely on this pickup for work and can't afford to be without it for more than a day or two, so, for peace of mind at least, I would like to know what is making the sound.

My '04 4wd has a pretty loud rear end howl, it is a LS but don't think it's an LS problem, no noises or chattering when turning. Howling is loudest at 50 to 60, but some noise at all speeds. I don't mind tearing into the rear myself, but not sure if I could tell what was wrong just by looking, i suppose bad bearing might be obvious, but not sure how to diagnose gear lash tolerances. It only has 107000 mi. and is an 8.8 rear I believe.

I have had an engine growl / howl problem that seemed to disappear with the cooler weather. However, turning the A/C back on yesterday, the growl/howl re-appeared. Is the A/C compressor bad? A/C clutch bad? Heading out on a long distance trip at the end of the month.
When the moan/ groan comes from the engine bay intake area, I have to back off of the throttle in order to re-accelerate... Gas pedal seems to become dead...

I've got sort of a howl going on, was thinking rear end, but when i jacked up the wheels and spun the driveshaft the noise seemed to come from the transfer case area. I haven't had a chance to check the fluid yet, could it be a bearing in the t-case? Its only when i'm on the gas if i let off its gone. 2001 f150 super crew 4x4

2002 Screw 4X4 with 5.4 ... Truck has 180K miles.
Howl / Growl noise we think from the front. Both front wheel bearings have been changed without improvement. A rotational issue as it only does it when moving and still does it if you put it in neutral and let it coast.
2 WD or 4 WD does not seem to make much difference. Been checking and testing everything without success. Drive shafts and u-joints are tight etc.
How to test it? It was my truck and is my son's truck now. They have run it on a hoist and tried to determine where the sound comes from. Going to try that again but it might be different when the wheels are not on the ground and there is no weight on things.

The used 2004 F-350 I bought has developed a driver's side front end howl between 45 and 60 mph over the last 1000 miles. I tried all the standard stuff, rebalanced tires, rotated tires, put on a set of tires from a friend's F-350, replaced wheel bearings, replaced ball joints and nothing has worked.

I have a 2002 Explorer. Front right howls. Local shop put new tires on, said wheel bearings are good, it Starts to howl at about 10 mph & keeps howling up to hi-way speed. While driving 55 cornering makes steering wheel vibrate a little, then straight it just howls. I have put on over 15,000 miles while this noise is happening. now seems to be getting worse...

I just changed u-joints and the carrier bearing on the rear driveshaft. I now have a "howl" somewhere back there. The noise starts around 30mph and goes away around 40mph. There no vibration associated with it. The sound goes away after driving for 15-20 minutes.
I double check all my marks on the driveshaft to make sure I put it in the way it came out. I put it up on jack stands and ran it up to speed but couldn't replicate the sound that way.
The truck is a 2002 F350 7.3ltr DRW.....

I searched and found a couple of threads with regards to a vibration or howl at the rear of some of the V6 Touaregs. Starts around 55MPH and continues up to 70 (fast as I've gone since this started). Not so much a vibration as a low pitched, but loud, howl.
Wife and kids noticed it as well. First time, since its winter, I thought perhaps snow or ice in the wheel well or a buildup on the rim was causing an imbalance. Not the case.
Wheel bearing? Car goes in for service next week, but I have a feeling that if I can't get it narrowed down dealer will tell me everything is okay.

I bought a new 2012 leftover prius v and love it. It's my first hybrid. Either way I have noticed a slight wind howl around 45 and up.

I own a rear-wheel-drive 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I recently had both rear axle seals and bearings replaced. At the same time I had the mechanic check U-joints, shocks, etc. The noise from the failing bearings is gone, but now I have a loud "howl" that gets louder the more I accelerate. If I take my foot off the accelerator, the sound is gone. As soon as I accelerate, the sound returns. It is barely noticeable at speeds less than 35 mph, but the howl gets increasingly louder as the speed increases.
I returned to the mechanic the same day I picked up the Jeep. We went on a road test and I was given a story about gears in the differential and that despite the noise everything was mechanically sound. Even though the sound was not present before the seals and bearings were replaced, the mechanic assured me that nothing is wrong. This howling is giving me a headache!

So here's my problem; my 05 Excursion has a v10 and now it does not idle correctly. At a stop sign and in gear it idles anywhere between 900 to 1200 rpms. Normally it should be idling around 750. I just noticed this as I had to apply more brake pressure to keep from driving through an intersection. Since this has happened I have changed the air filter and fuel filter. Do you think I need a computer reset, or something else?

Just changed my oil on my X since I just bought it. I put 6 qts in it but now it shakes at idle which it wasn't doing before. It seems like the oil may be a little high but I want to make sure before I drain any out. Also while I was under there I found that the drivers ball joints were replaced but not passenger side. I also found that I have 4.30 gears according to the tag so that's good. I also found that I'm missing a boot or something on rear driveshaft so not sure if something is dry and contributing to my highway shake separate from my idling and acceleration shake. I just put a matching set of dura grapplers on there which worked a lot as the 4 tires on there were all different and worn differently too. Also it seems someone replaced all but 2 cops

OK, Got this 2000 Excursion with 6.8. Recently, it just won't hardly idle, the code says MAF, but it ain't cause I bought a new one.
The Idle is like this: with MAF plugged in It starts and the rpms shoot up to appx 1200 for about 3 or 4 seconds, then it goes down to a point where you think it is going to stall, BUT at the last second it goes back up to 1200 rpm. It will usually do this for 5 or 6 times, but eventually it does stall.
If MAF is NOT Plugged IN it will start and idle perfectly, but the moment you push the Gas it will barely run at all.

My 2000 V10 is throwing some codes. The truck drives great, the only thing I notice is the rpm fluctuating down at idle once in a while. It doesn't stall, just not smooth. Here is the log from my torque app that I saved yesterday while driving: Where should I start ? Clean the MAF first ? oxygen sensors ?

Currently doing a road trip in my R and I've noticed after a considerable amount of time on the road, there's a howl noise emanating from the rear when keeping speed. Goes away under light acceleration. I can even hear it over the radio. After resting the car and me (12 hrs) I get back on the road and after a couple of hours the howl comes back. Is it the rear diff? I don't think it's wheel bearings. Tires have a different noise. 2013 R w/ 4000 miles. Or is it just what happens when you drive for hours on end?

I have 07 standard wagon, what is happening is when releasing the clutch to start movement it a times makes a howl/wine noise. This will occur most times when car has a loaded or starting on a hill.
The dealer can not tell me what it is for sure, this dealer has a good reputation and I have good luck with. He said that he does not have another car to compare it with, because manuals are not common.
Looking for pictures of the clutch area?

I have a 2000 excursion V10. It will die in gear forward or reverse the overdrive light flashes and cel shows code p0720. I have new plugs and COP on all 10 cylinders. I have replaced the differential speed sensor and the sensor on top of the transmission. I have a basic code reader it shows at the time it dies the vehicle speed is 70 mph while the speedometer shows 0. When I unhook the abs module it still has code p0720 but it does not die. I am replacing the abs module?

I am only at 141,000 miles and I'm seeing blue smoke while I idle! It started as a small puff of blue smoke when cold starting up...now it is much more consistent. I am also getting a diag trouble code of P0674 (glow plug in cylinder 4) can that be the cause? I'm nervous since I didn't watch my tech put oil in the truck at the last oil change...I think he put four gallons in instead of 15 quarts...is that a prob?
