Today the little guage in the over head went dark. So I came to FTE to search out the repair solution, but I'm having issues. What is that thing actually called? I've read it referenced as the lie-o-meter, but I cannot seem to find a good thread relating to various repairs to it.

The story: This unit has been out since before I bought it. Initially, I didn't give it too much thought. I was more interested in replacing tie rods and the lock-out hubs. Off and on since the summer, I've been thinking about it. In the fall, I started messing with it. I tried locating a fuse, but they all "seem" fine, unless I'm looking at the wrong one. I gave up, decided it was a dead unit, and went hunting.
In my grand fortune, I bought a replacement front grille for my Ex, as mine was cracked. The seller and I had a long conversation about our Ex's, and it led to him giving me a perfectly functional display. He bought the complete overhead unit for parts, didn't need the computer. I paid nothing for it, the guy was awesome. Despite his awesomeness, he said his 7.3L had only 152k, which may lead to a powertrain robbery in the night (j/k).
Today, I went out, dropped the console, popped and swapped the displays, still nothing. Sad faced, I hit my head on the steering wheel and came in for more coffee. It's snowing, again, and I'm not back tracking the entire system if someone here knows the hot spots or common faults of this display.
If you know anything that may be of some use, pictures, fuse slots, relay info. I know this v10 is a gasser, but I'd really like to see how bad it is.
'05 Ex overhead console temp is showing -40 deg... Had the board out looking for loose diodes, didn't see any. Have any of you ran into this before?
View 14 RepliesThe little screen that shows the MPG and outside temp went out a few months back. Getting close to winter so i'm getting more interested in fixing it if it's a simple thing. Where I should start? AFAIK, everything else works fine. This is on a 2000 Limited.

View 11 RepliesCEL - code escaping me but it said #7 glow plug (ordered a scantool yesterday).
Shifting - its at lowest been in the 30's and the truck has issues shifting until its warm. Its wierd, its like the water temp gauge stays at cold, then snaps up and shifting is fine from then on. Takes what I think is a long time to get there, not a gradual temp change, just like click and the gauge is on.
Lots of electrical looking issues, maybe all tied together?
- Shut doors sometimes flashers blink
- Overhead console no longer lights up
- Door ajar and overhead lights on when doors are tight
- more oddities but I can't think of them now
As far as I can tell, Expeditions, Excursions and Navigators all had this same part in them but for whatever reason it seems like it's next to impossible to find on its own - I don't want to buy a whole overhead console for one part.
Here is what I'm talking about:
I want to replace the lens and buttons, not just the missing button (which is somewhere inside my truck)
Is it Part #5 on this? [URL] ....
I can't find an individual part # - Is it because the overhead console was sold as a whole?
The read out light on my overhead console (the read out that tells the awesome fuel mileage Im getting) isnt working, and hasnt been since I got my excursion a month ago. Thats the only thing on it that doesnt work and was wondering if it could be a bulb, or is this a common problem and if so whats the fix?

View 4 RepliesDo the Ford Expedition overhead console is identical to the Excursion? I have an '04 XLT and the overhead console is damaged. I found a replacement unit for the '04 Expedition in the same color and the seller has no idea if the units are interchangeable.
View 2 RepliesWife just told me tonight that the overhead console and rear heater are not working in the excursion. Of course, we have a 3 hour drive tomorrow and it is cold outside.. The posts seem to center on either the readout not working or the heater not working, but not both. Trying to minimize time troubleshooting outside in the cold.
View 4 RepliesIv got a 00' Ex with water coming from the overhead compartment. The wires for the fuel mileage reader were eaten by a dog some time ago and the only electrical that look like are up there will be the controls for the rear A/C and heat. Any culprits for this type of leak? Iv done some searches, read through a few threads and haven't found anything with the same issue as mine. I will pull down the overhead compartment this week if i have time to check it but hopefully the rain stops soon. Ill try and get some pics after work today.
Edit: The water is dripping from that compartment right between where the face of the fuel mileage reader and base of the compartment go together if that makes any sense. But its just enough water to feel up my cup holder to about 1/5 full so not much but im not sure how long its been raining. Also no water is dripping/running down windshield.
I just picked up an 05 6.0 Limited and love it, but I can't figure out the overhead temperature gauge. It shows -40 degrees no matter what, but if I hit the outside temp button on the climate control, it shows the (mostly) correct temp. I verified that the temp sensor in front of the radiator is still there and hooked up, and it seems to me that Ford wouldn't go to the expense of using separate sensors for each readout, so I'm guessing that the problem is in the overhead unit itself. All of the other functions (compass, mileage, range) work just fine. I've seen several threads about the overhead dying completely as chips rattle loose. Is it also common for just specific functions to go out as things start to shake apart?
View 14 RepliesI need to pull my front overhead console to make some changes, gonna try to mount my sirius cradle up there to get it out of the way. Can't figure out how it is fastened up there. Also, I need to pull the cover off the rear seat DVD player as I want to solder in some RCA's onto the aux in. Can't figure this one out either, and I'm afraid to break the cover.

A few days after the job was completed I noticed that the top stud on the driver's side closest to the firewall has signs of oil leaking from inside the hole. This is a hole that I had to drill and insert an 8mm Heli-coil. I was very careful on the depth of the hole I drilled. I tried removing the bolt and placing JB Weld high temperature epoxy into the hole and reinstalled the bolt. I waited over 24 hours for the epoxy to cure and then I checked for leaks. The leak re-appeared but has slowed down quite a bit. I have a USB endoscope that I will be using to inspect the inside of the hole to see if I can see where the leak is actually coming from. I am in no position to replace the head but I will do whatever it takes to get the truck back into service.
After 7 days in my garage, I finally removed/replaced all 20 manifold studs. I had to cut off all of the nuts to remove the manifolds. I was able to remove 17 out of 20 studs by using a 6 inch pipe wrench and a lot of coaxing. 3 of the studs were already snapped off inside the head. I drilled out two and was able to get them tapped for a Heli-coil. The third stud I broke a 1/8" cobalt drill bit inside and it took 4 days to get enough of the hole drilled out to get a Heli-coil inserted.
