Ford Excursion :: How To Engage Hub Forward
Jun 25, 2012
I am a new manual 4wd system. i have a 02 excursion. i have tried to turn my hubs but they don't seem to move. i am unsure how to engage the system.
Should I put the hubs in the lock then put it in 4 wheels hi or low or the other way ....
Now from reading some of the forums it may sound like my locking hubs may be frozen and need replacing ....
Any good set of locking hubs and can i rebuild my sock ones for spares. its there a step by step on how to replace the locking hubs ....

My wife has a 2008 Eddie Bauer 4x4 explorer and when you are backing up or pulling forward with the wheel turned, it feels like the automatic 4wd wants to engage. The Ford dealership mechanic told me this is normal but it does not do it all the time. Is there anything I can look at to try and figure out why this does it sometimes or if this is even supposed to do this at all?

2011 F250 6.7L Powerstroke, automatic tranny, Electric Locking Diff
When I engage the On the Fly 4WD switch the indicator panel says "shift to 4x4H in Progress" and everything seems fine but if I am not moving forward when I shift the 4WD doesn't engage. The engine revs up but nothing happens. When I release the accelerator the transfer case bangs like it is going to rip out of the truck. In reverse it is even worse. I am lucky that I didn't gun it or I could have done allot of potential damage. All my other Ford 4WD vehicles engage immediately from a full stopped position. This is quite of troublesome because if you have to shift when your stuck in the mud, your still stuck. If I shift while moving forward it works just fine.
My question is: Does this particular model (2011 F250 6.7L Powerstroke with an automatic tranny) have to be moving forward in order for the 4WD to engage?

My 1986 528e was used to jump start another vehicle, ran it for a minute or so in Park @ 2000 rpm per owner's manual instruction, got other vehicle started, reversed away from other vehicle, put selector into Drive and car would not move forward. Tried all other forward options, no go. Reverse works just fine. Checked fluid and it was low. Topped it up but still no forward gears. Had vehicle towed home. Checked selector cable and it is OK. What could this be to go out all of a sudden like this?

My 2000 Subaru Outback (75,000 miles) runs well almost all of the time. Every so often, especially when the weather is cold and I have been making many short trips, the transmission will refuse to engage into any of the forward gears (Auto-Trans). It will do reverse, no trouble, but not the forward ones. It does not do this with any sort of regularity or consistency. I have had it checked by my mechanic and he said that although it did this it sounded fine and was not shifting roughly. Thinking it might be a fluid pressure problem, he put in fluid additive to soften the seals and this worked for about a week, then back to square one. I saw enough notes posted on other forums by other Subaru owners to know that this might be an issue with this year's model--maybe some sort of quirk that I hope can be fixed without a new trans.

I have a 2000 excursion v10 with 66k miles on it. This past weekend i went to engage my 4wd and it would not work. the light on the dash is on and i think i heard a click but no luck. A buddy told me to tap the transfer case motor with a hammer but am a little skeptical. another friend told me to check the vacuum switch with the vent/ defroster but i am not sure that holds true with my yr/model (i did a test where i left the vent setting on face/feet then turned on the 4wd. the airflow seemed to remain as set). About a year ago i removed, regreased and repacked my front hubs.

The Transfer case motor works fine changing from 2H to 4H and back to 2H. Verified the drive shaft is locked in 4wd. Drive shaft is free when switching back to 2H. Hubs work fine and no problems on the vacuum side. Garage is 50+ degrees.
Very occasionally I can get into 4 Lo. (Neutral - complete stop - brake pedal depressed). My main question is could the Transfer case motor be bad if it works in and out of 4H with no problem? I have not seen any answer to this question from my searching. Also, could the dash switch be going? Last summer this started and now seems to be getting worse. This weekend I could only get into 4L one time. Where to start checking (motor on transfer case or dash switch or other)?
I have tried rolling slowly, backing up etc... Problem is I can easily hear the motor work when going to 4H and going to 4Lo (when it is working) most times when it is switched to 4Lo, there is complete silence like there is no power to the motor at all. Tapping the motor does not work. I pulled the electrical connectors off the motor and all pins on both plugs look clean and new.
Thought to first check the dash switch but not sure how to check it. The motor could be also a problem? Is there a way to remove the motor and check it?
I want to get this fixed by the spring since I use 4Lo every weekend when launching the boat. (Never has been deep enough in the water to get close to the Transfer case)..

Looking at another Ex but the owner says the transfer case does not engage. Says it can be locked into 4X4 by crawling under it and engaging it manually by removing a motor [Servo motor ?] Does this mean I would need a new transfer case or just the servo motor ? I know mine did the same thing last winter. It would go into 4X4 and then pop out.

I had to make a few trips up and down the snow covered driveway. I moved the dash switch to 4wd high for each trip and then back to 2wd when I was turning around at each end. On my final trip back, I got stuck while turning around in 2wd. I tried switching to 4wd high and low but could not get either to engage with rocking back and forth.
The dash light did not come on and only the rear right wheel was spinning. Shifting to park or neutral and turning the switch to 4wd did not change the results. When I finally got myself unstuck, the 4wd still wouldn't engage when driving in a straight line.
What could have broke or stopped working? Bad vacuum line? Bad fuse? Could I have still initiated 4wd by manually locking the hubs? If so, is the process with the dash switch still the same even when manually locking the hubs?

I have a 2005 Excursion with 6.0 PSD just turned 80,000 miles. About a year ago, the vacuum hubs on the ESOF system became intermittent, so I changed then out with WARN manual hubs, which proved to be 100% reliable. Today, I got in the truck to move it, and engaged 4x4 High, as it had snowed last night and my inclined driveway was slippery. The hubs are locked, I get a lighted "4x4" idiot light on the dash, but the front wheels are not providing any drive power at all. I can hear the transfer case shift motor moving the gears, and if I select Low Range, the transfer case does change over to Low, but still no drive coming from the front wheels. I'm under the impression that the only things left to fail would be for the propeller shaft to be lying on the ground (it's not), the differential is not working, or something is wrong with the spindle shafts. Nothing has happened to the truck, and I have not heard any strange noises. I parked it 3 days ago, and everything, including four wheel drive, worked fine at that time. What may be going on here?

I am not liking this seat. Not sure if something wrong with control lately or I'm just noticing from sitting there more but I want it to lean more forward. I have messed with controls to get it to as forward as it will lean but still feel like it's only touching the very bottom of my back. Is there a spec on seat angle so I could check if it's proper? I'd like to avoid getting a grandma pillow..

I have a 2002 Limited with an issue with my driver's seat. The heater works but I cannot get the seat to move forward/backward etc. The passenger side works and I've switched the fuses around so it isn't the fuse.

I have been having some issues I think are vacuum related but I'm not sure how to correctly diagnose or pinpoint exactly where the problem is. 2 issues that seem vacuum related:
The first is a sound and vibration I get while driving forward. While the wheels are moving, it sounds just like a baseball card in bike spokes, it usually happens after I backed out of a parking spot and put it back into drive. I will get that sound and vibration until I slow down, and just as I begin to stop, I feel and hear a big bump and the sound goes away.
The second is the old climate control settings. The settings switch without moving. Sometimes while I have the AC running through the dash vents it will switch to the defrost setting and then back to AC after a couple minutes. Sometimes it won't stay in the defrost setting and switches to the vents. How to diagnose?

So after taking my truck to the car wash my drivers side seat no longer slides forward and is stuck in the all-the-way back position. The little joystick goes up and down, won't go back (since its all the way back) and makes absolutely no noise to go forward.
I've tried the seat recline trick to no avail. I also can't access one of the rear seat bolts because the seat is all the way back. What is going on and is there any way to manually get the seat moved forward?

And the vacuum pump was replaced.

I bought a 2001 Excursion Ltd 4 years ago. A previous owner put Warn Premium hubs on it, which I would have eventually done myself.
I got stuck a couple of weeks ago and tried to use my 4wd. Nothing.
A friend suggested I replace the Transfer Case Motor as it can go out if you don't use it. I got that done today but I still don't have 4wd.
I can hear the transfer case shift and see the drive shaft spinning, but the front tires don't spin.
I thought it was the PVH solenoid, but discovered the Warn locking hubs don't use the vacuum and it has been disconnected/plugged.

I have an issue with something when I stop. When I apply the brakes and come to a complete stop, right when the forward motion is completely stopped the ex kind of rocks back on the shocks. When that happens the ex jerks just a little. Kind of like if the brakes were sticking to the rotor, or the shocks are sticking. Then when I start to accelerate it jerks again. How can I tell if the brake hoses are bad, calipers are bad, or if it's the caliper slide pins, or if the shocks are bad?

Just a little background, my Ex is a 2000 V10 4x4 with 217,000 miles. I've owned it for a little under a year. Very clean truck, and well maintained by previous owner. Now the issue. Starting about a month after I bought it, it would occasionally hesitate to engage drive from park. I checked fluid and it was full and clean. I had a buddy recommended that I check for chafed wires in the steering column which I did and found nothing. It seemed to get better for a while but now it's back. It's doing it more than half the time I put it in drive and sometimes takes 10-15 seconds to engage. So am I probably looking at a new trans? Or, is there anything that can be done to save the old trans?

Monday I started my truck after leaving it in the garage while on a 8 day vacation. Shifting into reverse led to almost no movement at all. After a few seconds, I shifted back into park and then reverse again and got a solid reverse right away. I may have noticed sluggish shifting into reverse previously, but not this noticeable. What could be the culprit?
2001 Excursion 7.3 4x4 .....

I have a 2000 Excursion 7.3 4x4 with 237k miles on the original 4R100. Yesterday afternoon I went to back out of a parking space and the truck wouldn't move. When I put it in R, the transmission will engage and upon pressing the gas pedal it acts like it wants to move but will not budge. It rolls forward with no issue or noise. It will not roll backwards at all - not in neutral and not in reverse. The transmission shifts fine but with some hesitation to engage each gear. I have noticed some slippage but nothing crazy.
I 1st thought something might be wrong with the rear end but after some research I think it might be the transmission.

Everything I've seen in the forum refers to alarms activating and how to turn them off, my problem is the opposite. Last year I performed a simple injector cup procedure on my 2000 7.3 Excursion which took about 3 months, during which time I had my batteries removed. When I finally buttoned everything back up I noticed that my alarm does the "chirp", but that I can leave a window rolled down and open any door without it going off. How to get this to reset? I can hit the panic button and get the alarm, but as a security feature it's not working.
