What the black spongy tar like substance on the a/c condenser pipes in the rear of my Ex are? It's is put on at the factory but no one at Ford or anywhere else I've been can tell me what it is. I'm relatively sure it keeps the pipes from sweating.
View 5 Replieswhat material is used for the stock airbox? The 90 degree "snorkel" intake tube that is held on by two rivets on my airbox has a tab at one rivet that is cracked. This allows the snorkel to move around and come unsealed from the main airbox. It is "pre-filter" so there is no performance issue, but I would like it to stay in place and look right.
Depending on the material, I was going to shave some slivers from a thicker part of the box and mix it with a solvent to make a paste and apply it to the crack. This will only work if the material "melts" in strong solvents like acetone/MEK. Once it dries, it will be good as new. I have done this many times with ABS and PVC. There is a small gap to fill so simply gluing might not be as strong.
I have recently been getting black smoke out my tailpipes on my 1995 F350 with 7.5L at certain idles and my check engine lights comes on and off, could this be caused from my O2 sensors going bad because of my gutted cats? It seems to be running rich and my idle is way low and at the point to shutting off, prob cuz of overload of fuel...

View 5 RepliesAc is leaking where the 2 lines go into the condenser. I went to Ford and bought OEM o-rings thinking it would be an easy fix. HA! New o-rings were put in by a mom and pop garage. Still leaking. Guy said it wasn't, but with my uv light I could clearly see the dye. Went to a recommended guy. He took it apart, cleaned the hoses where the o-rings sit. They were kinda dirty from leakage and stuff so he cleaned them up with a wire brush and 2000 grit.
Recharged, and we both looked with his huge uv light. Bad condenser, drivers side lit up like a night light. Replaced the condenser with an aftermarket condenser. Recharged, STILL LEAKING from where the hoses go into the condenser. Vacuumed down the system... Removed hoses, checked o-ring fit. They are snug on the hoses and have some resistance when plunging the hoses back in. What gives? I'm 360.00 into this this week...
I have a 2000 Excursion and it appears the AC lines going into the condenser are leaking. I had a local shop replace them, vac and recharge the system for 96.00. The ac was never really cold, and he used a vac pump and gauges to recharge. He said he thought there was enough refrig in the system for me. I got tired of just cold air so I put a small bomb in the system tonight and woah, I had ice cold air again. I noticed that where he replaced the O-rings, it appeared to be oily again! I went to a friends house and he as the glasses and UV light and we could see the dye around the connections where the hoses bolt to the condenser. We cleaned em off with brake cleaner and will recheck tomorrow afternoon. How odd is it to have the O-rings replaced and then have it leak again? I know he did not use OEM O-rings. I do not think its the condenser, we can only see the die on the fitting and around the flange of the hoses.it is easy enough to replace the condenser and it is not labor intensive. I called the shop and he said it would be about 25.00 plus a recharge but he doesn't know its leaking AGAIN. Should I go and replace the condenser as well? This image doesn't show the lightly wetness around the flanges.... but here it is.

View 6 RepliesTruck has been running like a champ the entire time I had it. Took it in yesterday for an oil change. They also changed the fuel and air filters.
Drove off the lot and noticed some loss of power. This morning truck still feels sluggish but it is also blowing out black smoke pretty much every time I touch the gas pedal. I am even being super gentle with it. Starting from a stop, I hit 1500rpm and it's blowing thick black smoke as if I was flooring it. Same thing while rolling to get a bit more speed to pass.
I recently had the Blue Spring installed on my 04 X. After having it installed I still noticed a lot of hesitation on take off, and after a few seconds of trying to take off it kicks out a large cloud of black smoke and away she goes. The problem is very noticed when at the bottoms of hills it seems powerless and makes a wierd noise from the drive side of the engine bay, until I press the pedal enough to make it downshift then comes the large cloud of black smoke and she climbs up. All I know is I'm getting worse fuel economy then I should get and something just doesn't feel right when driving the X. The truck doesn't feel like it missing at all so I don't think it would be injectors especially as They are all brand new and less than 6 months old.

I just bought a used 2006 Ford F-150 it has the Triton 4.6L V8. Seems to be running ok a little white smoke on start up, but the other night after leaving work at 5am when it was around 10 degrease freezing. When I started my truck it was idling very rough like it was about to die but it didn't after it warmed up it was a little better but I think I seen black smoke from the rear end, but like I said after it was warm it sounded like normal so I started to head home and got about 15 mins down the road and it started to run very bad like it was bogging down and lost all power if I pushed on the gas all the way I was not picking up any speed but if I let off the gas the truck would jerk very bad and gain speed. But the next day in the morning it started up fine no problem I even drove it around town with no issue. What this issue could be?
View 1 RepliesJust above the front drink holder, the rubberized material that is bonded to the plastic started bubbling and eventually grew to about two inches long and an inch wide.
The dealer is refusing to cover it under warranty because they think it looks like it is the result of a chemical spill. Water and maybe a soda are about the most volatile chemicals we have had in the car and where this happened there could have never been a pool of that sitting there because it runs right up the incline toward the shifter.
I'm wondering if this is at all common, because they are acting like they've never seen anything like it?
I just touched some weird insulation material under the steering wheel and took a closer look at that area, to find this. Very weird. I don't remember the fuses exposed like this in my old mkV, at least nothing like this ugly.

View 14 RepliesAbout a month after replacing the oil cooler and welding the egr cooler, I randomly got a "low oil pressure" message pop up on the dash. I checked my oil level when I got home and it was full so I assumed it was just the oil sending switch went bad. A couple days go by and I noticed a substantial puddle of oil under my truck so I popped the hood and the entire top passenger side of the engine was soaked in oil.
I assumed it was the inlet turbo oil gasket because the turbo pressure wouldn't go above half, but after replacing it the leak was still going strong. It turns out that all of that oil was spraying out of my intercooler boot at the front of the turbo. I ordered a new kit and replaced all the boots and pipes and got her running.
While driving around the block the turbo sounded like it was being smothered and wouldn't engage. 30 seconds later the truck went into limp mode. From what I've read it can be solved with a ccv mod but i don't think that will solve as much oil as I'm experiencing, however I could be wrong. Could this be a blown turbo seal or maybe the head gaskets?
I haul a 5th wheel camper about every other month. The rest of the time, my truck is a commuter mobile. On one of the camper forums, the guys were talking about how clean their 6.7's run and how their exhaust pipes are clean. Well, the last time I camped, I walked around the campground looking at exhaust pipes on 6.7's. Most have clean exhaust pipes. Mine has dirty exhaust pipes! Does this mean mine is not running properly or is it the way I drive? Anything to be concerned about?

I know it's a minor thing, but I take pristine care of my Prius and I'm a self-admitted OCD.
View 2 RepliesI've been told by friends driving behind me that every time I accelerate I emit a plume of black smoke followed by a stream of black colored "water". I checked today by having the wife rev the engine to 4.5k...sure enough, black water shoots out of my exhaust, probably 3 oz. I also see a black puff of smoke which I assume is more normal than the water. Is this commonplace ?
