Ford Excursion :: Backup Sensors Turn Off When Put In Reverse
May 4, 2012
Just started doing this. Sometimes I can get them to turn on in I hit the button enough. Switch going bad?

View 12 RepliesIs it possible to turn off the backup sensors on my X ?
When I am towing these things drive me nuts!
I can't find any info about this "always on" reverse light issue. My searches show that most people with the problem only have it when they put it in to revers. Mine's broken but the light is on all of the time indicating it's not working.
I can go through the sensors, but I think the system only recognizes sensor failures when the car is in reverse. What's my first/next step?
My Excursion had a mangled rear bumper when I bought it recently. I just bought a salvage one to replace it. I had it installed today. I want to salvage the backup sensors in the old bumper along with the license plate lights. How do these come out? They seem locked in there to me.
View 3 RepliesOk, so it seems I have 3 bad backup sensors on the 2002 Ex. Background information for those considering a repair:
I put the Ex in reverse, key in run and can hear "fast ticking" from only one sensor. Sensor removal is easy (at lease on the two outside sensors). Two tabs on the black housing in the bumper hold the cylindrical sensor in place. Release the two tabs and work the sensor out. I haven't tried to remove the bad inside sensor yet as there is a lot less room to work there.
Once removed, a single tab on the wiring harness connector holds the sensor in place.
Here is the problem I have. I can't get the sensor to LOCK back into the connector. I have backed the connector against the bumper and pushed on the sensor with all my strength and I cannot get it to lock back into the single tab on the connector.
Is there a trick I am missing? I am ready to try vice grips but I fear I will damage the connector.
I'd really like to add these to The Beast, but don't want to drill through chrome. My bumper has some plastic running along the top (see pic). Just looking for info for the same bumper mounted the sensors there with success.
View 9 RepliesThe backup alarm sounds when I put the truck in reverse when there is nothing behind me. I found posts about people not getting any sound at all but none like mine. I'm guessing I have at least bad sensor that 'thinks' there's something in the way when there isn't.
View 5 RepliesMy reverse camera goes over the mirror, its a mirror when not in use and a camera when in reverse. The way this one is set up, the camera taps switched 12 volts at the rear of the car (tapped trailer connector for these) and the video signal runs forward (ran under headliner to center console to mirror). The monitor needs 12 volts, ground, and + 12 volts when I shift into reverse. I just read a half dozen threads where people suggested tapping into a black wire with pink stripe in the driver's kick panel. Just checked, no such wire on mine. I do not want to run a wire back from the taillight, this seems backwards since the power goes from the front of the truck to the reverse light in the taillight I just need to find the right wire. I checked the reverse relay and the fuse in the fusebox and they are both 12 volts when the truck is on, so they must be prior to the reverse switch.

View 2 RepliesI have a 2002 f350 that I have changed relays, control unit, checked fuses with no change. The hazards work normally. I'm ready to drive it off a cliff. I was told that it could be a bad ground. But no one can tell me where the ground may be. I have looked at the wire run from back to front with no problems found.
View 1 RepliesMy wifes 04 Aviator gives a check backup assist when in reverse. Checked fuse no problem.
View 2 RepliesIt's abnormally cold here in the Northern Va area single digits with windchills in the negatives. I ran through the car wash, one of those that hand dries it afterwards to get the salt off my truck. After running the roads I went to back in to a spot and the sensors are going off. Nothing is blocking them so I'm thinking water got inside and froze?
View 4 Replies1999 E-350 Super Duty (figured the problem would be the same for van/truck)
Problem: Backup lights don't turn on when in reverse.
Diagnosis: Changed the fused (because it was bad) but didn't fix it. The bulbs are both good. Brake lights, turn signals all work. I understand the backup lights are connected to the Neutral Sensor Switch. To test to see if the NSS was working, I put the van in Reverse and cranked... Van didn't crank (and likewise for D, 1-3).
So I guess the Neutral Sensor Switch works. The fuse works. The bulbs are good. Haynes doesn't have much as far as troubleshooting for this issue. What should I look at from here?
My back up alarm hasn't been working all the time. I checked for the clicking sound when it wasn't working & could hear the clicking. The light is on all the time when its acting up. Is there a control box somewhere?
View 9 RepliesI'm having an issue with my backup sensors when its cold (40 and below). The issue is, they don't work. When I put it in reverse the sensor light on the dash comes on signifying they're off. I push the button to try to turn them back on and it stays on with no change. Once the outside temp heats up they start operating as normal. How to fix this?
View 10 RepliesMy backup assist only works when it is raining!! I have read all the posts I could find on the back up system, but have not found one one my issue. I had my wife turn the key on, engine off and put the truck in reverse. I put my ear to each sensor and they are clicking. So I am assuming they are working right. I took the speaker out and cleaned it and put it back in. No beeping at all!!
It was raining really bad one day last week and as I was sitting at the curb in reverse waiting to back into the driveway a car passed me and the system started going off. It startled me and the kids. I backed in and it worked as it should. Later that night we went out to eat and it was still raining and the system worked as I backed into a spot near a light post.
The rain stopped and the truck dried out and now the back up assist is nonoperational again! What is going on? To me it seems the moisture is completing a circuit that is not being completed when dry!
How to test reverse warning system sensors? My truck about 75% of the time, once i put it in reverse the system goes to off. I assumed a sensor, but can't find any major resistance differences in them.
View 9 RepliesWhen I put the truck into reverse, sometimes the rear park assist sensors go off for no reason, sometimes they work correctly. Is there a way to narrow down which sensor it might be, or just replace the lot?
View 5 RepliesDoes the Ford emblem/camera just pop off the tailgate with a screw driver? Pry from top or bottom? I'm trying not to break anything here. I removed the tailgate panel inside and can't get any access there.
Both the camera and reverse sensors have quit working. I'm troubleshooting both but I'm not sure they are related. The camera died first but worked sometimes after slamming the tailgate. Sensors quit sometime after. Don't really care about the sensors but the camera is essential for hooking up the trailers.
I was hoping the wiring from the tailgate to the plug would be cut but that doesn't appear to be the case. I'd like to check the camera itself next. Ohm it out or something, I don't know.
So Wife did this nice "How-To" for the site and then we celebrated with a trip to Steak N' Shake. Halfway there I could feel it running a little off so I pulled up the app on the phone and connected it. I pulled up the codes and this is what I got.
So am I looking at an O2 sensor you think? It's shifting early and chugging a little as well. When driving it sounds a little like I have dual exhaust or a flowmaster. When sitting still at a light there is a small bump like bass turned WAY low coming from the exhaust as well. I turned around halfway there and went home and we took the wife's Highlander
Recently smogged my excursion, passed the emissions but failed self test. O2 sensors not ready. Drive it 40 miles everyday and still wont pass.
