Ford Excursion :: 2003 - Stalling / Will Run And Then Die

Jan 15, 2016

I am purchasing a 2003 Excursion with a V10 sight unseen this weekend. It has a stalling issue. Apparently it will run and then die. What are the things I should look at besides the fuel filter. The owner said the fuel pressure was ok.

Ford Excursion :: 2003 V10 Truck Started Stalling At Irregular Intervals

I have a 2003 Excursion 4X4 V10 (6.8l) gas with 130K.

About six months ago, the truck started stalling at irregular intervals. The truck runs fine for weeks at a time, but will suddenly die. This happens at idle, and under power. After stalling, the truck usually starts back up, but there has been a few instances where I thought it sounded fuel starved. It has stalled as many as four times in a row (within 15 minutes), but shortly after it runs fine again.

I researched this board, and tried the following: cleaned the MAF, and replaced the IAC Valve.

But, it stalled again, so in late February I took it to the dealer; a AAA approved repair facility which means they guarantee the fix for two years.

The dealer claimed to have pulled a P0231 code. As a result, they replaced the fuel pump and assembly, along with the fuel filter.

The truck ran fine until two weeks ago, then it went thru a series of stalls again. In each instance, the truck started right up, and I drove it to the dealer.

The dealer took it in again and had it for six business days, but they could not replicate the issue. I suggested they test the PCM/fuel relay and the signal going to the fuel pump - they said everything checked out okay. No charge, the ticket remains open.

What could be causing this? I am not too good with electrical stuff; in fact, I know very little. Another member explained a way to test the signal at the time the truck stalls, but I am not sure if I could competently do it. I am thinking I need to start replacing part after part until it stops? I don't mind doing that, but would need to know which parts to focus on. Should I start with the MAF? I cleaned it, but do not know how to test it.

Ford Excursion :: Stalling In Reverse - Died?

My EX died on me twice today when I put it in reverse. Once at the doctors office and once in my driveway when I got home. Is there any sort of interlock that would cause it to die when I put it in reverse. I replaced the idle control servo not long ago so I am hopeing it is not that although with the crap parts coming from China it is not impossible.

Ford Excursion :: 2000 V10 Stalling When Put Into Gear

I have a 2000 v10 excursion and once in a while when I shift from park to drive it will stall and lunge forward. It will stay running if I go to neutral but as soon as it goes into drive it will stall and also reverse seems to work sooner than drive will come back I have been stalled and had to put it in reverse and pull to the shoulder.

Ford Excursion :: 2001 V10 - Severe Misfire To Stalling

2001 V10 Excursion, just as the title implies, has severe hesitation issues and stalls out seemingly randomly, yet consistently. It started back 3ish months ago with a slight misfire(maybe?) at higher rpms (3.5k+) occasionally. Ive changed all 10 plugs, with no malfunctioning symptoms on them. I've cleaned and then replaced the MAF, and it seemed to fix it, but shortlived, and it was the exact same the day later. Air filter checked and cleaned, tb checked, tps visually checked. Codes were not thrown until it started to get quite bad, but only resulted in a lean condition both banks code. I seem to have fuel pressure, replaced the fuel pump and filter when the pump died about a year ago. As the problem worsened, I replaced the o2 sensors the other day, with still no change.

I plan on getting a fuel gauge to confirm for certain, as well as a vacuum gauge. I will check the fuel pump relay, and I am gonna beat on the CAT to see if its busted. Aside from replacing the COPs, it made me an hour late to work as I had to limp it along the highway, hazards blazing.

Before it starts acting up, I cant apply more than 5% pedal or it cuts out terribly, and a short while after that the motor starts surging terribly no matter the speed, and the pedal does absolutely nothing, like its not connected. I either stop and turn it off, or it dies, either way I stop. Restart the truck after a few seconds and it works fine for another....I dont know 100 yards maybe. Makes for one heck of a roadtrip.

Looking for any options that would kill a v10. Can a bad Cat kill a truck? I don't think all 10 cops would fail...or can they? Ignition module? Busted TPS? I'm lost.

Ford Excursion :: V10 - Random Stalling - Not Getting Fuel When Cranked

I've been researching the issue here on FTE, and this past weekend replaced the IAC Valve. I also cleaned the MAF.

Symptoms are random stalling. Before today, it was only at idle. Today it did while under power. It stalled three times before I had it towed home.

It starts up fine, but after stalling it did seem like it wasn't getting fuel when I cranked it a few times. But, then it was good. It still starts fine, and idles fine.

When a pump goes on one of these, do they act up first, or they simply stop working?

This issue has taken place over the past several months, but seems to have come to a head today.

Last resort is changing out the filter before I take it in.?

Ford 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel :: 2004 Excursion Running Rough / Smoke Coming Out And Stalling

I have a 2004 Excursion with a 6.0 Bought the truck already studded, EGR deleted, and a 54V FICM. When I bought the truck it had a hot stall, no restart problem. Found the high pressure oil leaks and resealed them by replacing the #3 injector and replacing the top injector seal in the #4 .Oil pressure reads very good now and I drove the truck for a couple weeks problem free.

Truck started smoking (white to gray) and felt like it had a miss. No misfire or contribution codes. Truck failed the bubble test and I narrowed the leak down to the passenger side by removing the banjo bolt

Banjo bolt at the front of the passenger head

Found the #3 injector loose...the copper washer

Copper washer had disintegrated/melted and appeared to be stuck to the side of the injector. Scraped off easily enough, cleaned up the injector and injector cup and reinstalled the injector with new O-rings and copper washer.

Put the truck back together and still smoked the same and still felt like it had a miss. Ran KOER test and found sometimes a contribution code for #2 and sometimes #6 .

Drove the truck to work and it didn't feel down on power...mostly just smoked and rough idle...but on the way home there was a lack of power and just as I pulled into my driveway the truck stalled...wouldn't restart. FICM voltage was good, high pressure oil read over 900, IPR was holding around 40%.

Pulled the secondary fuel cap

Secondary fuel cap to run another bubble test...there was no fuel in it...completely empty. Started to think that I had a fuel feed problem. Hooked up a fuel pressure gauge

Fuel pressure gauge and drove the truck again...pressure wasn't great (45 lbs) but never dropped below 42...not even when it stalled. Pulled the cap again...dry again...yet the truck read fuel pressure.

Research showed that I was possibly pressurizing the fuel system with combustion pressure and that was possibly displacing the fuel from the fuel system. This would explain the run for a few minutes, then stall and no restart for a few minutes...I'm assuming that the pressure would bleed off and the fuel pump would start over.

Still failing the bubble test and still pointing to the passenger side. I pulled and recleaned the injector and cup...new orings

oRings and copper washer. Bubble test again...fail.

Pulled glow plug from #3 , failed bubble test still.
Pulled glow plug from #1 , failed.
Pulled #5 , failed...pulled #7 ...failed.

With no glow plugs in the passenger head I am still bubbling up to the fuel filter housing. Pulled the banjo bolt from the front of the drivers side head...no more bubbles.

Ford - Focus :: 2003 ZX5 Stalling In Reverse

Why my 03 focus zx5 will stall in reverse. I have had the tranny serviced. I can drive it and then let it sit for about an hour and then try to reverse in it and it dies. I have change the mac, tps, iac sensors. I am at a loss for why this is happening. I also changed the pvc hose that runs from the back of the motor to the pvc valve.

Ford - Mountaineer :: 2003 V8 Stalling / Not Starting

2003 Mountaineer, 4.6L V-8. Drove it about 2.5 miles and stopped at light. Died and wouldn't start. Spins awesome. Just no go. Pushed over to the side and about 15-20 minutes later it fires up. Just before AAA shows up.

Nothing for 3 months after checking relays, etc. and all good.

Drove to same intersection on Monday and parked at Kroger. Too long of a line so start to leave, but no start again. Spins, etc. Again, after about 15 minutes I try again and it starts and runs fine and I took it home.

Is there an ignition module still or is it all PCM type of controls for ignition?

Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: V8 Just Stops Without Stalling

I have a 2003 f150 2WD crew cab with a 4.6 V8 engine it has 178,000 miles on it. The other day after I started it to leave work it died on me without hesitation almost like the ignition switch was turned off I tried to restart and it would turn over but wouldn't start so I switched the ignition all the way off and it started right up, going down the road it did it again.

If I try to restart without turning the ignition all the way off it won't start but if I turn it all the way off it will start up first try, it has done it a couple times since and its the same way every time, where to start. My check engine light has been on for some time for something else so I don't know if it picked up a code or not I don't have a code reader to see if it has a new code...

Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: Stalling When Coming To A Stop

I've recently had problems with my truck running 97 f150 4.2L.The latest episode is it stalling when coming to a stop. It will start right back up, I've checked for codes and found none, I have changed the fuel and air filters and I have tested the fuel pressure.(I have a video of the test however I don't know how to upload it.) Key on engine off it pumps up to 30 immediately on the gauge. key on engine running gauge shows a steady 32. I am really at a loss for what to check next. I really need this truck dependable again ASAP my wife is scared to drive it.

Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: Truck Keep Stalling On Acceleration

my 97 f150 4.2L keeps stalling on acceleration. It ran fine this morning then my wife put 20 dollars of fuel in it and drove 30 miles to her destination with no problem. on her way back the truck started bucking bogging down and acting like there was a fuel problem but it didn't kill. I checked for codes there were none. I removed the fuel filter on the rail and replaced it with a new one. Now it will idle fine with no miss but if I give it gas it kills.

I checked the codes again there are none. I also checked to make sure there was fuel coming from the tank when I turned the key as well as making sure I heard the fuel pump kick on when I first turned the key.I am leaning towards water in the fuel,i didn't see any trash come out of the old filter, however I am not sure. I have a 175 mile commute to and from work.

Ford - Explorer :: 2003 4X4 - Very Rough Idle - Stalling If Let Off The Gas

Bought a used 2003 Explorer 4X4 that runs like crap.... All I know is it has new upper and lower radiator hoses, new battery, new brakes, 2 new tires and new belts... suspension seems great and body is nice too. It obviously needed a new radiator and complete exhaust, so I did those. Now it is running better ( I can actually get the RPMs over 1500) but still running rough and will stall if I let off the gas. It will surge and dip in RPMs. Very suspicious of vacuum leak.

Unplugged the MAFS and it roared upon start but within a minute started the sputtering etc. Currently pulled the IAC and check continuity between pins and it was 10 ohms so that passed but there is no continuity between either pin and the case. So this seems to indicate I need to replace the IAC which I will do tomorrow. I would love to find a diagram that displays the vacuum system so I can make a thorough check of it. Also seems to have an oil leak on drivers side valve cover gasket.

Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: Lack Of Power / AC Stalling Out Truck

I have a 2003, 4.6 F-150 with 201,500 miles

I am having some A/C issues. It's just too hot out there.

#1 The truck has a lack of power when I have the A/C on. It feels like it wants to stall out in the lower RPM's. I loose power when I go 65mph+. The truck actually stalled on me yesterday in the parking lot. I turned off the A/C and it ran fine.

#2 I have to go over a 5000ft pass daily, I turn off the A/C when I go over it. Below the pass, the A/C doesn't work well and it's not as cold. But when I get over the pass, the A/C turns very cold. The pass is like a 3-4 mile stretch.

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: Stalling After Spooling Down

My "01 6 speed has started stalling after spooling down. Example, coming down a grade in a lower gear and then push the clutch in it will die. Where do I need to look? I've recently done injector o rings and normal service. No change at all. No other issues except a very touchy throttle. It's pretty disturbing to be pulling a heavy load, have to get in the brakes hard, push the clutch in and the engine dies. Not a good day.

Ford Ranger / B-Series :: 2003 XLT 4.0 Stalling At Stops / Low Idle

My 2003 ranger xlt 4.0 has a stalling problem. The engine light came on in aug and I had it coded at AutoZ and there was a code for the oxy sensor, changed that and didn't work so I took it back. In oct I had it coded and it said the air int temp sensor which i was informed was part of the mas airflow sensor, changed that the beginning of nov, got the computer to reset and it still didn't fix it.

Took that part back and had it coded again a few days later and several codes came up AutoZ code 1732 and the the OEM number to cross for them were: P2195 , P0300 , P0316 , P0174 , P0171 , P2197 . Reset the comp yesterday and as soon as the light came on had them code it again and it came up AutoZ code 1732 OEM # to cross P2195. I guess my next step will be to take it to the dealers to get diagnosed..

Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: 5.4 Stalling In Drive Only / Reverse Works Fine

2002 f150 7700 with 5.4 triton and 4r100 tranny started chugging under acceleration and now stalls when put in D, 2 or 1. park and neutral are fine and reverse works perfectly.

Now when I put it in drive it chugs and stalls immediately... 1/10 times it will keep running but chug violently like its running out of gas. will get worse and stall if you press the gas. i can light the tires up for a block in reverse however.

Changed coils 1 2 and 3, IAC, bank 1 knock sensor, camshaft position sensor

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: Truck Stalling When Going Into Reverse

This just started happening last week. When I put the truck into reverse, the engine lugs down and dies. It' as if the AT is fully engaging reverse gear with no clutching action. If give the truck a bit of pedal, I can put her in reverse and back up without issue. Going forward into Drive has no issues.

Ford - Explorer :: 2003 4.6 - Low Idle / Stalling - Code For DPFE Pops Up

2003 Limited with 4.6, 89K miles. Just started doing this last night. Checked codes, had the DPFE one pop up. Replaced that, no luck. Cleaned the IAC, MAF, throttle body, EGR, PCV, no luck. Used carb cleaner and sprayed around intake & vacuum hoses, no luck there. Checked vacuum, steady 20in even when it lopes. Battery unhooked for 15 minutes. It hovers around 300-400rpm's, sometimes will stall but drives fine. Tested the IAC and it is functioning normally. Nothing above has worked.

Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: 1994 - Stalling Between 1st And Reverse - Exhaust Leak

I recently got a 2wd 1994 150 straight 6 4.9L, It's been a great truck so far. It drove from New Mexico to California with no issues. Just this morning it started stalling and dying when pulling up to stop lights and putting it in reverse. The truck has 172,000 miles and has a new serp belt, alternator, radiator, and starter. It seems to run just fine on the highway and once it's warmed up it doesn't stall as easily. There is an exaust leak.

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: Stalling Out Just Like The Key Is Turned Off About A Mile Down The Road

Early 99 7.3 manual 6 speed. 224,000 miles. Truck starts great and runs great at idle. Starts out in gear just fine and seems to have plenty of power. It will act just like the key is turned off about a mile down the road. Will restart after extended cranking or letting it sit for 15 minutes or so. P1249, P0340, and P1280 codes pop up. Had a professional shop work on it and they changed out the CPS and IPC with factory parts. When i picked it up it had an SES light on but was running fairly well. When I looked under the hood the IPC had been cracked on the plastic part. Replaced it with another new one and it ran fine for 3 days, even pulling loaded hay trailer. Now when driving it, it cuts out for a second or two. It does that every couple miles until it stalls out completely. Restarts after 15 minutes and runs fine. Same codes are showing up.
