Ford Aerostar :: 1990 - Intermittent CEL On - ECU Dead?
May 7, 2012
I have had an intermittent Check Engine Light for a couple of days --- the van started and ran fine, but the CEL would come on after about 15 minutes of driving. It would sometimes go off before I reached my destination, but it was always off the next time I started the van. No sweat.
I went to read the codes this afternoon and now have a problem. I put one end of a jumper wire into the Self Test Input (STI) and then accidentally let the other end of the wire touch the 12V connector of the starter relay (why is that thing unprotected anyway?). I saw a little arc so I know there was some current flowing.
After this, I connected the STI to SIG RTN for reading the Key On Engine Off codes and got no pulses at all. I rechecked the jumper wire but got the same result. I then removed the jumper and started the van --- it ran quite rough and would only stay running by giving it plenty of gas. The CEL was on the whole time. I did this a couple of times just to be sure.
I guess there's nothing more annoying than turning a little problem into a big one... crap.
I couldn't find an electrical circuit diagram showing the STI in my Haynes manual, so I'm not sure what is likely to have been damaged. I assume the engine control module (ECU) has been damaged, but that is just a guess.
Some specific questions:
- where is the ECU?
- Should I spring for a new one (depending on the ID number), or is one from a junk yard just as good?

I want to replace the lock cylinder which apparently I should have already done but now the key won't turn at all and the wheel is locked in place, so I can't turn the key to the run position in order to remove it. Is there some way of working around that?

My fuel pressure is at 24 engine of and 29 engine running. Is this a bad fuel pump? I was told that it is supposed to be between 40-45 PSI. Is this correct?

I have a 1990 Aerostar that has leaked gas 3 or 4 times. I am not sure where it is coming from exactly but it seems to be towards the back of the engine, kind of near the torque converter. This leak happened 2 days ago when i was warming the van up and it was cool outside. The time before that, it was after driving for a while. The day before yesterday I drove it probably 50 miles with no problems and it was about 85-90 degrees outside. I drove it today and there was no leak and today is a cooler day.

I have a 1990 Aerostar 4WD, 4L, with about 120k miles. About 6 months ago I started my van and noticed under it that gas was dripping onto the exhaust at the Y-joint and evaporating. I shut off the van and drove another car to work. That evening with fire extinguisher at hand I drove my car up on ramps and quickly got under it looking for the leak. NOTHING. 6 months later...yesterday. I drove for a few blocks from home and notice heavy gas fumes etc. Stopped the van and again gas was dripping onto the Y-pipe joint.
This was an explosive situation... I pulled off the doghouse cover and saw, smelled and touched gas friom on the right top of the engine near the back. My questions are: What could randomly be leaking at this location and is it fixable without pulling the engine. I pushed the van to a secure location and am afraid to turn it on. Maybe I will drain the gas tank before then. I am just now trying to find the schematics for the fuel line delivery stuff. Where to go for a manual.

3.0 ENGINE - For a year now I could not figure out what was wrong with my van. It has a loss of power low end but seems to run OK at higher speeds. I changed the plugs, wires, cap etc, fuel filter and no difference. I finally broke down and took it to Firestoneto diagnose it. The guy told me #5 plug was foul and had oil on in, said it is possibly the rings. They did not charge me but they also did not do a thorough check either. They did not check the compression in the cylinder or other spark plugs.
Spoke to a guy at the auto part store and asked what I could do. He said change the oil and add a can of restore. Also said to put a anti foul adapter in first and then the new plug, the adapter would keep the oil from fouling the new plug.
I got the oil change and added the restor. Drove it for a while and took the plug out myself, its the 2nd one in on the drivers side. The plug was nasty looking. Put the new plug in and started it up. I can see that there is spark going to the new plug but putting the wire on and off made no difference in how the engine ran, like the cylinder was dead. I took the plug out of the adapter and put it back in, still nothing, I took the plug back out and there was no oil or smell of gas. Fuel injector not working? You would think there would be some combustion with the new plug.
A year ago the problem started where the van would run great one day then crappy the next. Sometimes it would run a few days great(like new) then a few days crappy. After a month or so it just ran crappy and basically has ran the same for a year now. I notice the A/C puts a load on the engine and the A/C clutch will click on and off every few second when the van is in gear but not when the van is in park or neutral. A/C is not low and works fine when driving, very cold. I normally turn the A/C off during take off because it takes off much slower with the A/C running.
The van shows some white smoke when I rev it up real good when I first start it but it does not show any smoke when idle and while driving.

I've got a 90 240 DL that stopped dead and won't restart. Hit it with starter fluid and it fires off, but stops. Had no way of testing fuel pressure, so replaced in-line pump. Tank pump runs, can hear it through filler opening. Problem persists, even with new pump and filter. Pulled vac line to FPR but no gas leaks there. Also, new plugs, distributor cap and rotor, new air filter. Pulled MAF sensor plug, still no start. Checked FP relay (also spare) and jumped FP relay to test. No go. Where do I go now? Should I check computer codes? Replace FP regulator, crank sensor? Everything? Can the on-board computer be bad?
Trying to find a path to go on since the new pump seems to give plenty of pressure.

My wife says the 97 3.0 2wd has an intermittent beeping of various patterns and volumes. Slow beep, fast beep, continuous beep. Not the ding bell you hear when you leave the lights on. I've only heard it once. It was continuous low volume and it stopped before I could locate the source. It seems to happen on first start up but not all the time and goes away after a few miles. What it is and how to disable it?

Having an intermittent strange sound coming from the fuel pump from its normal whine at start up to a gurgling sound almost like you are blowing back through the fuel line back into the tank. Going on a 300 mile trip, should I hold off?
Btw: it's a 1996 Aerostar 3.0L

So, I've got a new toy (FORscan ODBII software) and a new code that isn't turning on the CEL (yet) but also didn't show up in OBDWiz either.
P1100 - Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor Circuit Intermittent
I cleared it, drove a few miles, checked again and it's set again.
The little troubleshooting advise window in FORscan says to monitor the MAF voltage while wiggling the MAF harness and see if the voltage goes below 0.23v or above 4.60v. I was unable to manually make that occur, no matter how I tapped on the MAF or wiggled the wiring.
However, in oscilloscope mode, look at this (at idle):
It sure looks like it went below 0.23v here. I have no time tonight to do any research. This is a relatively new MAF (one week old, Delphi unit). I think I'll swap it out for one of my two old OEM MAFs sometime this week. But if any opinion about this, pipe up. I do damned little work with scanners these days, and the tech keeps changing.

Intermittent chirping noise when accelerating from a stop. It sounds like a brake chirp but it comes and goes. Not brakes. Changed pads and turned rotors chirp is still there.

'90 Maxima 256k.....recently I've noticed exhaust coming in through the vents when I have the AC on and have been idling or driving in slow traffic. I know I have a small exhaust manifold leak because I hear the clicking. The problem is this exhaust smell happens very intermittently. Usually on hot humid days when I have the AC on. I have tried to duplicate the issue to no avail. Sometimes I can sit in a parking lot at idle with the AC on for 30 minutes and I don't smell any exhaust (not even when I smell under the hood). How can this be? If it truly was an exhaust leak then it would leak all the time and I would smell it. Could my EGR valve be leaking? When the EGR valve is activated?

My B5 1.8t 5M cruise control has stopped working. It became intermittent for a while and now it is dead. I have a long commute and really need the cruise to work.

So what I might have thought to be a transmission lag may be actually a dead zone in the pedal. When pressing the pedal from dead stop nothing happens until you press the pedal down further. Any way to reduce that or eliminate?
I'm referring to NA 2.5L engine with auto trans.

My 8-year-old (2003), 134k mile Nissan Maxima has a new quirk. When the car is started from completely cold (as in over night), there is a distinctive intermittent squeaking noise (think water being rubbed against glass) coming from the left front somewhere near the tire. The car only does this for about 5 minutes or so until it's warmed up and it has to be going 20 miles an hour before it starts. Once the car is up and running you can turn it on and off all day, let it sit for a few hours even, and it's fine. What's going on?

90 Ranger with 5 speed manual, Every thing works as it should untill you put it into 5th, lift the clutch pedel and you fine, the tac responds and I asume your now in gear, but press on the gas pedel to give it a load. whhhhhiiiinnnkkk and the gear selector kicks back to netrual. Also I did remove an inspection panel from bottom center of the tranz and could see no sighns or damage, rounded or broken teeth. It's been sugested that it's just time to re do the clutch, if so why do all the other gear selections work without any problems?
2.9 v6 w/95k and I don't know the history.

My 90 Ford Ranger 4 banger is my construction beater. I had replaced the starter because the old on had refused to fully engage into the flywheel. After replacing it it worked fine for a few months and started doing the same grinding sound again. I took that starter back thinking it may have been defective. After replacing s new one again It did it again after one day plus it kept on going after turning off the key. To stop the grinding I quickly disconnected the battery. I still kept on going when ever I reconnected the battery. what is going on?
