Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: Hard Start When Cold / White Smoke

When it is cold out side like 20 degrees I'm having problems starting my 2000 7.3 I'm cycling it about 5 times and misses smokes white for a bit then stays running I was thinking of changing out the fuel filter. What it could be?

My 2001 7.3 was smoking excessively and I rebuilt the turbo and the center cartridge was at fault for that. I'm still having some of the problems I was having before with a lot of smoke at cold start (I have to hold the accelerator down while I start it and it takes about 10 seconds to start) even when I hold it I have to keep it held for about 5-10 seconds before the RPMs get to where they should be. And it smokes like crazy.
Then after about 3 minutes warming up, or 30 seconds of me holding it at 3500 rpm, the idle smooths out and it only smokes a little. Then once I start driving it doesn't smoke a lot unless I go hammer down then it puffs some white smoke. I took the oil cap off and it isn't huge amounts of blow by cap just rattles off. Can ford buzz test and see if I only have 1 or 2 bad injectors? Could this be anything other than injectors? It has a ts6 on it with 24xxxx miles with factory injectors.

Recently since the weather has been cold. between 0-30 degrees or so. My 2002 7.3 with 161k on it is smoking a decent amount i think. far more than i ever remember it smoking thats for sure! anyways its a combination of blue and white smoke and it doesnt last long when the truck starts maybe 1 minute and the smoke stops.
But I also notice when i rev the truck maybe around 1200 rpms the engine shakes very bad. so i was thinking maybe a glow plug went bad making the engine seem like its missing. but even when its warm i rev it up to 1200 and i still feel the engine shake slightly. Maybe im just being picky when its warm? I need to test the glow plugs and go from there but i want opinions about that issue. the truck sits for 4 hour periods and every time i start it i have smoke. I will pay attention tomorrow morning if it smokes after being plugged in all night and post my findings.
My other issue and this typically happens when its below 20. sometimes i will go to accelerate after coming to a complete stop and the truck kinda has a very weak rev to it then just takes off like the tps took a break on me. sometimes i have had it jerk the truck when the throttle catches and other times it creeps at first then takes off like a boost of power.
lastly and this little issue happens most noticeable at 35 mph. i feel a surging im thinking this is related to the tps but i put the truck on cruise control and i still feel the surging. maybe this ties into my second issue? bad TC? ive plugged in my scanner and the only thing jumping out at me is the icp hunts about 100 psi or more at idle. i plan on doing a WOT test on the HPOP, ICP and IPR tomorrow and see if maybe this is just a weak hpop causing my issues.
Repairs i have done:
new 8th injector and all new injector seals about 25k miles ago.
new ipr
new icp
have CCV mod done and 4 inch turbo back exhaust
new map sensor
cleaned out the EBP sensor and tube but that was probably 40 or 50k ago now.
gray cps and i cant remember when i put that on.
gutted the EBPV
bellowed up pipes
no tunes the truck is factory as far as that goes.

Problem: Especially when it is cold outside . . . The truck takes forever to start and while doing so a ton of white/grey smoke comes out of the exhaust.
My starting schema: Turn the key on have the gas pedal pushed to the floor until the "wait to start" light goes out. Then, I turn the key off and back on while still pressing the gas pedal all the way down. When the "wait to start" light goes out again I remove my foot from the pedal and try to start it. I never leave it cranking for more than 5-7 seconds. If, after trying this process several times I will not push the pedal in at all. Also, sometimes I will leave the pedal pushed in while I am cranking it over.
The truck used to start after a couple of tries but lately it won't start at all, even after 20 tries. Sometimes it will spin up for a second as if the engine gets going but then just doesn't continue running. When it is warm out it will usually start after a few tries but doesn't seem normal to me. After I first bought the truck(used) it would start up within half a second after turning the key.This all started after I had to fix an o-ring that was damaged on the top/back of the motor that was dumping all my oil out of the top/back of the motor.

For the past few days I noticed my truck would be really rough to start and a lot of white smoke. but once it ran for a minute or less it would be fine. Today when I got home I popped the hood and was looking for anything and noticed my degas bottle had this weird fluid inside on top of the coolant? So I popped the cap off and smelt it and its fuel. Of course this would happen to me. Now I'm not going to lie I have beat on it a few times this week but nothing so so serious.
Could this be contributing to it? Could it be a head gasket? now being a diesel mechanic I doubt its a head gasket simply because there is no oil mixing. I am praying its nothing too major. Once I have the narrowed down to what it could be ill see if its something I could tackle or if the stealership has to do it, which I am not looking forward to. I'd rather be down a truck for a little bit and save a boat load of cash.

I just replaced my up pipes, turbo pedestal O-ring, ICP, IPR, New O-rings in all my injectors and torqued to spec, new glow plugs, glow plug relay, oil loom wiring harness, new O-rings on oil cooler, oil filter, oil, and antifreeze. I have tried and tried on upwards of 75 or so time to get it to turn over. A little white smoke came out and it sounded like it wanted to fire up, but only a few times.
I have good batteries and a charger on it, 3-4 tries in 5-10 second bursts or longer if it doesn't lose power every 30 -hr. oil is in HPOP too. just found out my block heater is dead, but I shouldn't need it now. Tach moves a little when I crank it but only when my oil pressure gauge hits half way and that about the time it wants to start and starts white smoking.

99 Ford F-250 4x4 Ext Cab 287,000 miles. I know she is getting a little long in the tooth but this issue is new within the last month. It does seem to be better when it has been plugged in. On start up I smoke out the neighborhood. Blueish/White smoke, also sounds like it's missing on a couple injectors. Doesn't matter if you cycle the glowplugs a good long time. Glow plugs are 1 1/2 years old along with injector o rings. Only thing new is I changed from Rotella T-6 to Delo 5W40 Syn, but it was doing it before the switch as well. I tested my glowplugs relay and that is working fine. Could I have lost a UVCH? Fuel filter six months ago or so.

I noticed about 1 year ago I had diesel in my coolant but wasn't sure.. took it to a Ford Guy about 45 minute's away.. He seems to know his stuff but when he tested the coolant the results said less than 2% diesel.. But he did find an injector issue and swapped it out..
Forward to present.. there is diesel in my coolant now , since the level is rising to almost overflow and I believe this has been doing on for quite some time as I have that smell you get in the cab..
BTW - All injector cups have been done about 3 Years ago.. On another note , I get white smoke on start up especially if the truck has sat for a day or 2.. What can cause diesel in the coolant.. I did a complete coolant flush this summer and was super **** about getting all the old coolant and gunk out.. Ended up with only clear water coming out the degas

So I was on my way to work on a semi-chilly morning here in Colorado. Every day as usual, a little upset in the morning, a little white smoke and after a good warm up i'm on my way. About 10 minutes up the road while accelerating on the freeway, I hit I guess the perfect RPM range (2000-2500) when all of a sudden my CEL came on. Right as the CEL showed up, the engine introduce to me a new skip and lost a bit of power. About 5 more minutes up the road, the CEL went off and the skip went away, unless in idle. I made it to work a few minutes later and the skip in idle was apparent for sure. I turned her off and just couldn't get her to turn back on. The injectors are just not firing, no smoke at all, they don't even sound like they're trying to fire almost like no signal to the whole engine.
I replaced the CPS, the IPR and unplugged the ICP to test if she'd go. I opened the fuel bowl and watched it fill up. I checked the HPOP level, it was almost full, maybe a quarter (between half) inch from the top. No codes.
She ran great until this, outside of needing glow plugs. When I was trying to get her started it was 60ish outside so I don't think glow plugs is the issue. It sounds like the Injectors are not firing at all, whatsoever.
I will note that I had a few fuses blow out of no where that I replaced, a trail light, OBD fuse and one other in the under-dash box. I had her dyno'd a few weeks back and the tech said she made great power but sounded like she had a little issue recovering from the high RPMs but I figured my injectors are tired.

my 2002 7.3 with 370k just started to puff a small cloud of white smoke on start up. i realize this is normal during cold months but it is currently 102* in Texas. it will do it on the first start up of the day or if i start it immediately after shutting it off at full operating temps and when i do get a smell of the white cloud it has a oil smell but this only lasts while the cloud is dispersing all of that only lasts about 2-3 seconds no loss of power good boost pressure when driving no rough idle at all nothing acting any different other than the cloud and the quick smell of oil...

Fine one day, no start the next. Been skimming over the 7.3 no start thread, so w got some ammo for him to check. White smoke while cranking, rpms move while cranking. Nothing to read codes or other sensors YET. Tried the unplug ICP and it "wanted" to fire. So, I have him my spare IPR to try. I'm sure he checked the fuses but will confirm via text...

My beloved excursion is 300 miles away from me in a no start condition. Vehicle has 270K miles. Very well cared for. No issues to date since purchase 5 years ago. Went to back up and the vehicle starting Caming like it had a big cam in it. went from reverse to drive and problem went away. Drove vehicle for 2 more weeks without issue. Then all of a sudden it dies. Restart driver on down the road 1/4 mile, dies again. Restart, make 45 mile drive home vehicle is low on power will hardly pull a grade but I got to my friends house. Went to start vehicle next day and no start. Puff white smoke while trying to start. It hits every once in awhile but wont run.
The vehicle is throwing NO CODES other than an open glow plug on 1&8 which it has for sometime now. I have changed, fuel filter, fuel pump, CPS(genuine ford), IPR and IPS. No real changes still wont start. I disconnected the IPS and it started but it sounded like it was only running on a couple of cylinders. It would not accept throttle. The local Forddealer does not have a Ford diesel tech. Ive called a couple of diesel shops and I hear could be a bad HPOP, or bad ECM or a bad IDM but without seeing it. I am at my wits end with this thing. I am an electronic engineer by background. So I have a good sense of the process. I have checked all fuses, relays, etc. I will say I did have one issue with it a year ago where the UVC problem popped up but the dealer fixed it and it has been fine ever since.

I had some starting issues a little bit ago, but got those sorted out- I installed a new ICP a few days ago and haven't had any more issues. We came up to the mountains last night (got down to about 35), and now it won't start this morning after 3 GP cycles. So I tested the GPR, and the always hot post was, well, always hot. I tested the other post with ignition on, and it had nothin.
Luckily I had a new GPR, so I swapped it out and everything tested normal on both posts. Still won't start. I'm getting white smoke so I know there's fuel (plus my pressure gauge is at about 58 psi). What else am I missing? I've also tested all the fuses....

I just came back from a 200 mile trip and parked my truck. Next day, got in the truck and turned the key.... it turned over and white smoke coming out the tail pipe. After doing some research(you tube),I ruled out cps sensor because it was showing low rpms on tach. Replaced glow plug relay and still have same issue.. what else to look at that I can do without getting it towed. Hunting season coming soon and I need the beast.

I just got a 2006 ford F250 lariat fx4,and it's already at the shop.. when cold start it has some white smoke, but once I get up to highway speeds the truck jerks and bucks. turbo is putting out normal boost. I've changed oil and filters along with fuel filters. also put on a new serpentine belt and pulley, air filter and have everything cleaned real good. the truck is acting like it's starving for fuel. FICM or injectors ?

So I've been having issues with starting my truck lately. It was really hard to turn over, would start really hard when it did and would blow some black smoke. Turns out my starter was bad so I replaced it with a DB Electric high torque starter. Now it starts up great... for the most part.
I'm still having some black smoke when it's a cold start and/or I have the key set to "On" to warm the glow plugs for a few seconds. It's almost like the starter is turning over the engine, but for the first few turns it sounds empty or hollow (at least that's the best way I can describe it). After the first turns it will sound normal how it's supposed to and will fire up shortly after but with some black smoke.
If my car is already warm it cranks right up without any smoke unless I have the key set to "On" for a few seconds to warm the glow plugs like I said earlier. Pretty much if I warm the glow plugs it makes it harder to start up for some odd reason.
What might cause this or how to fix it? Maybe some of my glow plugs are going bad, or possibly my IDM? I used to have the P1670 code by itself, however, that went away when I replaced the starter. I also just replaced my camshaft position sensor just to be sure it wasn't going bad. I've also been having some boost pressure leaks if that's relevant at all.

This is kind of strange, I have a hard start problem, when I crank it the first time, it fires immediately, kind of like a romp, but doesn't start, then when I crank again I get a lot of whitish smoke and no start. I read to try and unplug the ICP and try it. That worked, and I had oil in the connector. I replaced the ICP, but have the same problem. I still have to unplug the ICP for the truck to start. When it does start, it runs great! No injector stiction, no smoke, no rough idle, it runs and sounds great. Why unplugging the ICP is still required to start? (Only after sitting for more than 10-12 hours).

2000 F350 with 340000 on it, have had it for the last 140000. It's an old service truck from south west gas with one owner in between them and me and he put about 5000 on it. I have the big cylinder open air filter, billet compressor wheel, 4" exhaust all the way and an Edge tuner. Don't have any codes I can pull with the tuner. Have been good to me so fare only need regular maintenance, but always had smoke out oil filler with a little pulse.
2500 ago I changed oil and add 1/4 of Lucas oil. 3 days ago when I started in the morning it smoked white smoke out the exhaust as a steam train and idle rough, but cleared up as I went down the street and will do so every time I start cold or warm. Ok, might need new GP, did that yesterday yet the same. Now I start checking stuff and have smoke out the oil filler as a steam train so the cap won't stay.
I know it sound like alot of problems, just try to verify some of them. The smoke out oil filler is blow by? The smoke on start up is that related to bad injectors? Can a bad injector dumping fuel create the blow by? Coolant level ok Transmission fluid level ok Engine oil Rotella T6 added 3 quarter in 2500 miles. I do not have a scanner or any other advance test tools.

Got a 2002 7.3 F-350 with 300,000 miles and for the last couple of years I've been getting blue smoke on cold morning start ups and its been gradually getting worse, it clears up after about 30 seconds and all is normal,No loss of performance, Oil consumption is minor, however I hate a vehicle that blue smokes, I'm guessing my issue is valve seals are worn, I was wondering if it is possible to replace the seals while the heads are on the engine? and was also wondering how much time it would take to fix? as i would have to have it professionally done. I know its hard to guess a time frame and everyone is different. Sounds like textbook valve seals to me but is there anything else I should check first?

My truck is hard to start when cold and I suspect glow plugs. But it is not showing any codes? If it is a glow plug or glow plug relay at fault , should it throw a code?

My 2001 7.3 is smoking only when barely on the gas. New fuel filter. Don't know if its possible injector going bad or what? Smoke is white not black.
