My VIN inside the door is scratched enough that the State can't verify it. They need two locations to match the VIN otherwise the vehicle must be scheduled for a "level 3" vin inspection hundreds of miles away. Well I tried to find one on the engine where the DMV can do a "level 2" vin inspection but I can't find it. Where other vin's are on my 2002 Ford 450. Mine is a flat bed.

While driving from 45-70Mph the truck engine stops for about 1 second and starts back up by itself. I thought the problem was the cps so I replaced it with a ford CPS. Today the problem still persists. The truck engine turns off and comes back on, the tach drops to 0 rpm and so does the speed.
The Check Engine Light comes on and so does the water in fuel light and so does the Check Gage light. After I turn off the truck and start it back up the truck does not show the lights.
I believe I found the issue, but can't look into it today. While I was moving some of the wires on the truck I found out that if I move the red/black bunch just a little bit the truck shuts off and comes back on when i let it go.
I have a 1999 Ford F450 Tow truck with a 7.3 turbo. It loses power and misses when I give it gas but when driving normal speed no problems.
I had a ford technician look at problem with a computer and he said number 8 injector . Today number 8 was changed.
Test drove it same problem. I also changed th fuel filter. And I emptied the tank to make sure No water
i have a 99 f450 7.3 that cranks but will not start. I did an injector buzz test but it sais no communication between the computers. it has a new rebuilt engine, new ipr, icp, hpop, water pump, and both computers.
View 4 RepliesI have a 2000 F450 with a 7.3. I am having problems starting it. Batteries are good, engine turns over strong. It has started a few times after a extremely long crank (so long I am sure I am burning out the starter). I have replaced the CPS since it was cheap enough but that didn't make a difference. I have unplugged the ICP and it is very oily inside the connection. Does this mean the ICP should definitely be replaced? The truck will not start with the ICP unplugged. Should it be able to start with the ICP unplugged? Other items I plan on looking at at the IPR and possible the IDM box. Am I on the right track?
View 11 RepliesI have a 2000 Ford F450 7.3 4x4 dully with a PTO driven winch 108,000 miles. The truck has develop a transmission slip.
I have changed the transmission fluid twice and it drives better but it slips badly. I can drive it up to highway speeds but it has problems getting from 0 to 10 MPH. The transmission runs hotter then normal but nothing major maybe around 205 degrees
Do I need a complete rebuild? This is a beater truck that I use to tow mainly. It is not worth a major investment. I need the PTO gear and 4x4.
I have several 2000 through 2003 7.3 E350 and E450 short school buses. Does the transmission from these has a PTO gear? I am thinking of pulling the transmission from one of them and swapping it.
It looks like the transfer case just bolts to the back of the transmission; I believe that a 2wd van 7.3 transmission will work with the 2000 F450 setup.
I have a 2001 F450 7.3 chassis cab with just over 100k. I have a new problem... So far on two different occasions the service engine came on followed by a loss of power under a load and white smoke from the exhaust. Took it to the shop the first time, they determined it to be a dirty air filter, which seemed odd since it just happened all of a sudden. They changed air & fuel filter, problem gone- for two weeks..
View 8 RepliesI have a 1999 f450 7.3 diesel that surges and will stall but will start right back up again and drive. It does this over and over but all ways gets back to the shop. The engine starts good when cold so glow plugs are working correctly. What I have done:
Fuel filter change, check electric fuel pump but have not replaced it. I have replace camshaft sensor.
What I have found d by inspection:
Throttle pedal has 2 electrical connections one for the IVS and one for the TPS. I have experience on the 7.3 IDI diesels but very little on the newer injection system.
Does that little clip that grounds the PCM case have a part number? I've been troubleshooting an "SES - but no codes that would cause it" issue, and noticed tonight that clip is not there. Even a photo would work, as I assume I could make one if I had to. It's just a piece of copper, right?

What's a part number and who sells them that I can get it delivered next day?
So after hitting a pothole, it would seem like half the engine lost power, after some searching around, i found that i would most likely be the harness inside the valve cover that has lost connection.
Its the right side, so i would need to take of the turbo pipe, and probably something else to get to it.
Since i'm doing this job, what to check out along the way? I want my 7.3 to be as reliable as possible.
I will probably ask some questions along the way, it can be a challenge sometimes to own a car that not many mechanics are familiar with, but as i have read online, this should be a very straight forward fix.
Can the harness be upgraded so it doesn't happen again? Its an 02
I have been battling and issue with my 02 7.3 just shutting down on my at random times.
1st Time
Outside Temp: 100
Drove 5miles sitting at in idle in bimart parking lot truck shut down
Let sit overnight, went back started right up
2nd Time
Outside Temp: 100
Driving home sitting in traffic slow moving 5mph, truck shut down
Able to start up about 5mins later
3rd Time
Replaced CPS, Air filter, Fuel Filter
Outside Temp: 80
Hauling travel trailer up peak 35-45mph shut down
Allowed truck to sit 35-45mins started back up
Started hauling made it about half mile shut down
Got towed to flat land to unload trailer and haul the rest of the way
Returned to truck
Started right up 45mins later, drove it 30miles home without a problem

Moving my worldly goods from California to Oklahoma in a rented 26' box truck with my wife following in our '02 F350 loaded to the gills with my lathe, mill, air compressor, weld and assorted machinery. Just west of Deming NM it started to blow lots of white smoke and down on power. Some rattling noises from the engine when throttled up & won't reach 3000RPM.
Had it towed to an impound yard for storage. Plan on sending a flat bed to pick it up when we get to Tulsa.
Any experience with a tilt back trailer capable of loading & transporting this truck that weighs around 17,000 pounds? My plan is to continue on to Tulsa & make arrangements from there.
so got to work today, truck engine light comes on all foward motion stops. Just coasts and idles along. I have 280k on the orig stock trans. I also have dp tuner and did the valve body upgrade along with adding the 6.0 cooler hoping to extend the life of the trans. Reverse works. So i asume I am needinf a new trans. My options are Ford HDr4100 orig 4100, Or BTS built trans. I also pull a toy hauler as well. My question is If I order the BTS can I have a my local shop install it or does it need to be programmed at the dealer. If I get the HD from ford installed will I have to remove the dp tuner chip to get it programmed and also will i need another new valve body replacement.
View 14 RepliesI finally got my 02 F350 running again after replacing the Fried PCM, but during some additional shop prep work, I discovered that the engine dies when you use the horn button, it will start right up afterwards so no permanent damage, but, Where to start? I have Forscan and a cable so I can get into the PCM but I need to know where to look or what PIDS I should be watching during troubleshooting.

It will start back up right away. It has begun to start a little rougher especially after it dies. I have replace the CPS and I got new batteries.

Is this going to damage my engine to keep plugging along? Is it just going to run kind of rough until I burn up the bad fuel? Ive got about 200mi to go so just needed to know if its safe to keep driving or am I going to be stranded.

From my understanding, a CEL is supposed to illuminate each time you turn the ignition ON as part of normal startup procedure.
I figured the previous owner must have pulled out the bulb to hide the fact that the truck had a few "issues" before selling it, so today I pulled out the gauge cluster and it looked as if the CEL bulb was a tiny LED soldered directly into the gauge cluster itself. There were a few serviceable/removable bulbs for things like turn signal indicators, high-beam etc... but the CEL did not have a serviceable/removable bulb.
I've been driving this truck and working through it's "issues" and fixing things as I go, but it keeps throwing codes without the CEL illuminating. What's going on here?

I have a 2012 Ford F 450 turbo diesel dual wheel truck,my problem is an engine light came up on the instrument panel so i hooked up my scangauge and found the code P20BA I went further into the diagnostics of the scangauge and found nothing,i cleared the code and drove down the road and the light came back on could the sensor be faulty and if so does any body know where the sensor is located.
View 6 RepliesI own a 2003 Ford F-450 Superduty Chassis w/Utility Body. Owned it for the last 2-1/2 years . So far, the only things needing replacement were an Alternator, FICM, and routine oil and transmission fluid as well as filters.
This past week the truck started lurching while in traffic. I brought it back to the shop and put the scanner on it, and found codes for #1,#3,#5 injectors imbalance and no circuit to the fan motor. Did some research and found low oil and/or dirty oil could affect the injectors, I changed the oil and all filters also removed the EGR and cleaned it too.
I started the truck ran it, stopped, and restarted and let it run for a few. I cleared the codes and did another test. The only code that came up was the Cooling fan P0528 again. I let the truck run. All of a sudden the truck revved up and I could hear the turbo kick in and the engine seemed to take a life of it's own. I did another round with the scanned and found codes for Cruise Control popping up P0565 through p0569 and the p0528 again along with a p1000.
My truck is not equipped with cruise control, but apparently that is what might be making the engine surge. What do I do? What this might be???
With an AD2 and no HFCM, need to have a part number for just the top of engine filter? All I can find (Motorcraft, AMSOIL, Racor) are the dual filter kits.
