Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: 2002 - Diesel Fumes Smell?
Nov 30, 2016
2002 Excursion 4x4 7.3 PSD 90,000 miles Hydra Tuner
the past few days I started smelling diesel fumes in the cab of my truck with bent on and also at the front of the truck when installing new bumper and winch. It's not real strong in the cab but pretty stout at the bumper. I have poped the hood and made a quick visual inspection and from underneath the only evidence of any leak is some power steering fluid which is a different issue (I think)
a week or 2 ago I was cleaning the Ex and noticed 2 or 3 drops of red fluid on the concrete under the Ex I crawled under and looked up and the steering knuckle was pretty wet. Popes the hood and took a look from the top and the power steering pump was sticky and dirty but the only fluid was on the top of the cap.. I'm not real familiar with the set up on the Ex but I have heard the PS support the break booster. From visual inspection it seems as though the fluid is coming they the small (vent?) hole on the cap. What I can/need to do to stop this?

I have been smelling fuel on and off for the last few weeks. I thought it was the fuel bowl drain valve so I ordered the kit for the whole fuel bowl from diesel o-rings. I did the rebuild this morning and I don't see any visual leaks. Still smell a strong odor of diesel though. The lower engine cradle is all wet and the valley is still a little wet too. Could I still have a leak and if so where to look? Could it be just wet still from draining the fuel bowl and needs time to go away?

Diesel smell in cab. 2000 F350 7.3 158K on the clock. Just noticed it 3 days ago. Been meaning to address the passenger side fuel line clamp issue. Learned about that one here. Gonna tear the stuff out to get at that one Tuesday. Replacing the clamp. Hope the fuel line is not already compromised.

my 2002 7.3 with 370k just started to puff a small cloud of white smoke on start up. i realize this is normal during cold months but it is currently 102* in Texas. it will do it on the first start up of the day or if i start it immediately after shutting it off at full operating temps and when i do get a smell of the white cloud it has a oil smell but this only lasts while the cloud is dispersing all of that only lasts about 2-3 seconds no loss of power good boost pressure when driving no rough idle at all nothing acting any different other than the cloud and the quick smell of oil...

I've thought I smelt diesel fuel on an off for a while, but never found the source.
Tonight, 17 degrees out I have fuel in the valley and it appears as if the back of the drain valve is wet.
A fuel bowl rebuild is on the short list. Is this typical, the cold weather brings the issue to light?

Just happened today right after I bought diesel. thought it may be water in fuel but after researching wondering if it is injector, etc. It starts every time knocks real bad sometimes for a minute, but clears up to idle ok. During idle no smoke, slightest acceleration however produces white smoke harder I accelerate more it plumes and it smells like diesel in the air.
Cannot get past 15 or so mph till switching into 2nd gear then 25mph max. Had to drive 4 miles like this I can say it cleared up and drove 1/2 mile until I had to stop at a traffic light then going from idle to acceleration again ran bad rest of way home another 2 miles.
A few years ago I did have a rough idle and accel. similar and it ended up being the broke pick-up/sending unit in tank (but of course that was when you get to around 1/4 tank of fuel and didn't run bad above that much fuel in tank), plus there was almost or more than a gallon of water in tank. I have done the mod for the fuel pickup with hoses, filter canister, etc. but wondered at first today if I had gotten bad gas or water in the tank again. Not sure how that much water got in the tank to begin with but that was bout 5 or 6 years ago.
Truck has over 200k miles and Ive had it for 11 years. In the morning will check the ICP sensor by unplugging look at fuel filter bowl, etc. A question I have is: Is water heavier than diesel, would it run thru my line first? thinking diesel is heavier than gas because of oil content....

On the way in to work this morning, I get the "Cleaning Exhaust Filter" message. This was great because I still had about 15 minutes of driving left and it usually comes on right when I am pulling into my driveway. As soon as the regen starts, I can smell diesel exhaust/fumes in the cab (this is going 70 mph on the freeway). When the regen was done, the smell went away. Is this normal? I could understand if I was sitting still getting some exhaust in the cab, but moving at full speed everything should be blowing away. This is my 4th or 5th regen and the first time I have noticed it.

On occasion, not always, and after the truck has warmed up, some fumes enter the cab. If it happens when I pull into the garage and stop, the smell is noticeable on the outside also. Like I said, its not always present, only occasionally and at very slow speeds or when coming to a stop. I don't smell the fumes at speeds above 35 to 40 mph - I guess it simply blows by when traveling faster. Its difficult to describe what it smells like, but to me its like diesel exhaust fumes. But this is a 6.7L engine so there should be no diesel exhaust fumes - right?
So, having said all this, I took the truck into the dealer this past week for the 14E03 recall and asked them to also find the source of the fumes. When the service was completed, the service underwriter said I had a small leak from "one of the two" cooling lines under the turbo unit. I was asked to drive the truck and see if they fixed the problem. Since I'm a total rookie regarding diesel engines and turbo chargers, I would ask the members here if you have experienced this situations and what action was taken to resolve it. By the way, my 2011 truck as about 85,000 miles on it.
The following morning after driving a few miles, I noticed the smell again. As I drove on and thought about it, I was hoping the liquid that leaked during the service would fully burn off and that would be the end of it. Today while driving some 40 miles with several stop and goes, no fumes were present.

I'm presently traveling and my '02 F-250 with a 7.3 PowerStroke has developed a pretty steady drip of what I am almost sure is diesel fuel. It's dripping from the very front, from the shroud around the fan and radiator area.
I have some basic tools with me, but no experience on this engine or the fuel system. Does the fuel line go up into the radiator area? What should I be looking for? I'm stranded in a campground until I figure this out.

02 7.3L SD Im on a long haul and think I might have bought some bad diesel. It is shuddering a little kind of like a miss. It started right after I stopped for fuel. Is this going to damage my engine to keep plugging along? Is it just going to run kind of rough until I burn up the bad fuel? Ive got about 200mi to go so just needed to know if its safe to keep driving or am I going to be stranded.

Recently I have been smelling exhaust fumes in the cab of my truck when at a stoplight or parked in the driveway. When driving, the smell tends to go away. This occurs with the windows up and the climate control on auto. I can also smell this when I shut down the truck and exit. I am looking for anything that may be causing this. Hoping not to have to take it to the dealer.

Usually in the OBS 7.3 but a buddy of mine with a 2003 6.0 is having some issues. When he romps on the pedal but when he does so he claims he can smell exhaust in the ventilation system. I rode with him and smelt it as well. So I inspected all exhaust clamps and piping as best I could and did not notice any soot or leaks while running. I don't know if it pertains to it or not but his heater only works on defrost.

I smelled it this morning and when driving home and it almost smells like wires burning and its pretty strong. I looked all around the dash and can even smell it under the hood. And by the way the cruise control recal was done on it so it shouldn't be that. Hopefully my truck doesn't catch on fire over night.

I'm checking all places to look for a fuel leak. I park on a concrete slab, with no drips.
I have already mopped up as much fluid from the valley from recently having all of the injectors replaced. I still need to clean it further with simple green, and stuff white paper towel in the valley so I can really know if there is a leak.
3 years ago I replaced the water drain valve o rings, but I suppose they could have gone bad again.

I'm having an issue with massive oil consumption and no oil leaks on the ground! No clue where the oils going but I burned more than 2 gallons today in a few hours of driving exhaust smells awful but the truck is running fine.

On 2500 mile trip, no A/C last 400 miles and we're cooking
Compressor clicking on/off about every 5 secs, clutch smell. Seems to be turning okay.
I brought some tools, including a full socket set.
Can I pull the clutch and remove shims in the campground? Looking for a condensed version of how?
Worst case, how do I replace the clutch- of I can find a dealer with one?
Pulley and clutch fixed, but cycling on and off...adding freon?

We have a 2003 Explorer Sportrac and the fuel cap light came on. Then ck engine light came on. took it to a dealer to check it out. Said it has a fuel pressur issue. could be the cap or something in the fuel tank. it needs a pressure check they said. cleared codes and put new factory fuel cap on. 2 weeks later it happened again.
XLT model 108,000 miles on it and we are the original owners...

One of the great things I liked about the new 6.7L engine was the lack of any diesel smell. While the tips of the exhaust pipes remain clean at 64,000+ miles, no soot, my truck now has a strong smell of diesel after each use. The truck is running strong but I can't figure out why this is happening.

no change, changed stand pipe and dummy plug on driver side, no change and guess what? Now I am stuck on the side of the road waiting to give my last $100 to a tow truck! Engine is hydrolocked, fuel pressure is low, starts off at around 20 and works up to 54 with key on engine off, and that is as much as I know from the side of the road with out my AE. Blew white smoke also. Smelled of unburnt diesel. I think it's linked to my rough running issue. Maybe a bad injector? But every time I did the click test they all passed. Idk, I'm gonna remove the glow plugs and see which hole is loaded and with what. . .

I have a 2002 7.3L Screw 4x4. Will a 03/04 6.0L instrument cluster work in this truck? The 2 clusters appear identical. I put the 6.0 cluster in and the trans temp, and coolant temp gauge will not work. All the gauges sweep when it is powered on, but the coolant and trans temp lay flat, and the check gauge light is on. All other gauges and functions work. When I put my other cluster in, all gauges work fine. Is there a difference in the VSM, PCM, or the SCP communication?

I just finished a cab swap and I'm having a little trouble. Here's a link to what I've done : [URL] ....
KOEO the WTS light, battery light, SES light all stay on and no power to fuel pump. No communication with PCM (using AE). All fuses are good, but no power to PCM fuse (#22). When I apply 12v to #22, the truck will start and idle - but poorly because I still don't think fuel pump comes on. The idiot lights all stay the same.
I did get to pull codes while it was running and got stuff like IAT circuit high (its not plugged in), fuel pump relay short to batttery, and a few other short to battery things (park assist stuff IIRC). I thought that might have something to do with the redneck idea to boost the fuse with an external power source?
Just thinking while typing, I don't have 3rd brake light hooked up yet (just thought of that, I'll hook it up first) and bed/bumper are not installed, so no tail lights or park assist stuff is hooked up. I'm also not using overhead computer, so it's not plugged in.
My next step is to go back through all of the connectors and make sure something isn't 1/2 way plugged in or possibly plugged into the wrong place(s).
Looking thru the wiring diagrams is not a strong subject for me, but I was trying to figure out how power gets to the fuse and how PCM relay works (does it complete circuit to ground to energize the coil?).
