One of the great things I liked about the new 6.7L engine was the lack of any diesel smell. While the tips of the exhaust pipes remain clean at 64,000+ miles, no soot, my truck now has a strong smell of diesel after each use. The truck is running strong but I can't figure out why this is happening.

A few weeks back I noticed that when I climbed into my truck after command-start warm up for 10 minutes, and I could smell strong exhaust.
I figured it was hopefully the wind, or an isolated event.
Over the past few weeks I've used my truck for 3-4 more around town runs and every time I warm it up I get the strong exhaust smell. It's that rich, eye watering, sickening exhaust smell. I also notice a small yellow frozen puddle under the exhaust tips that wasn't there before.
It's bad in the cab, but even walking around outside the truck and the smell is sickening. I actually just started the truck and I could actually smell the exhaust smell faintly, from inside my house! This has never before occurred. Prior to this, a person could hardly tell it was a diesel by the smell of the exhaust.
Once the truck is up to temperature the smell seems to disappear, or at least lessen.
I have been smelling fuel on and off for the last few weeks. I thought it was the fuel bowl drain valve so I ordered the kit for the whole fuel bowl from diesel o-rings. I did the rebuild this morning and I don't see any visual leaks. Still smell a strong odor of diesel though. The lower engine cradle is all wet and the valley is still a little wet too. Could I still have a leak and if so where to look? Could it be just wet still from draining the fuel bowl and needs time to go away?
View 14 RepliesWhy I am smelling coolant? I have a 2004 6.0 SD.It generally happens when accelerating up to freeway speeds or passing cars, Medium to hard acceleration and the smell is strong and will go away after a few min. The obvious thing is to check for a leak but I haven’t seen any.
View 14 Repliesno change, changed stand pipe and dummy plug on driver side, no change and guess what? Now I am stuck on the side of the road waiting to give my last $100 to a tow truck! Engine is hydrolocked, fuel pressure is low, starts off at around 20 and works up to 54 with key on engine off, and that is as much as I know from the side of the road with out my AE. Blew white smoke also. Smelled of unburnt diesel. I think it's linked to my rough running issue. Maybe a bad injector? But every time I did the click test they all passed. Idk, I'm gonna remove the glow plugs and see which hole is loaded and with what. . .
View 14 RepliesI have a 2005 F550 with a 6.0. Recently I have had issues with a long crank before starting at times but once it started there were no issues driving. Yesterday it started up in the morning, made a few stops then it wouldn't start at all. Cranked strong but no start. Had it towed back, sat for an hour or two now it starts again. Put a gauge on it and all readings are good. Did have a P2285 code which the ICP sensor. I do suspect there could be an issue with the egr cooler as it needs coolant occasionally. Could that have anything to do with the no start? Truck has started fine today. Why start sometimes then not?

View 8 RepliesI have an exhaust smell in the cab of the truck. It is pretty strong. Seems worse when it is really cold outside and goes away when outside temps warm up. I checked the tube (passenger side behind engine) and did not see any soot.
View 12 RepliesFor the last couple weeks, I've had the ac on and windows down basically the whole time and ive notice some oil spots on the driveway... i got under the truck and was feeling around where i saw the suspected oil, and well it seem as though its water mixed with a little oil and i have a small amount of oil leak from my intercooler pipes and elbow... Why I have the oil spots that looks like its mixed with water and why my in cab air vents seem to put out an engine/emissions smell?

How can I tell if it was doing a regen? I have an Edge Insight. Is the a parameter I can display to know the regen was active?

View 11 RepliesI have an 2007 6.0 turbo diesel with approximately 120,000 miles. I have not done any work on the truck other than change the oil and fuel filters the last 9 years. Lately the check engine light came on and every now and then I can smell antifreeze in the air vents coming out. What may be causing this? I am looking to upgrade for more power and do a few things to the engine to make it bulletproof. I have heard something about and EGR bypass or something that I need to do. Not sure I fully understand it and what does it fix or what it will cost me. I have also heard something about head gaskets and head bolts. I may do the work myself if its not too complicated. What all needs to be done on this engine to make sure it stays strong for years to come. What is the best engine tuner/chip for more power?

View 14 RepliesI have noticed the last couple of days that after the truck has been running and well warmed up I will on occasion smell that sweet smell of antifreeze. I can find nothing in the interior of the cab, If I raise the hood there maybe a faint smell of antifreeze.
I have approx. 31,000 miles on the truck and a few months to go on the bumper to bumper warranty.
Does this sound like the overly popular radiator leak starting to raise it's ugly head? Is there another likely culprit?
Where do I need to be looking to locate the source of the antifreeze smell.
Got to thinking today while my truck was warming up, why does the exhaust smell so bad. I think it is kinda interesting that the exhaust pipe is so clean also, like new matter of fact.
So what make the exhaust smell? The exhaust filter traps the partials right but where did the diesel smell go? I can understand it when in regen but in normal operation I don't get it. I guess I just don't the mechanics behind it. All I do know is that, what is left just stinks especially when warming up.
After driving, i smelled something horrible burning. When I get home, I get on my creeper and roll under to look for anything suspicious, and I find this. It is not where the drain plug in the pan is, it's in front of that. I checked the temp when I was driving but it never got high. I really need my transmission to not explode on me right now, I have a lot of driving to do.

Today I noticed this burning smell under my hood and a bit of a engine knock on idle... It doesn't knock all the time tho ??
View 7 RepliesI'm hoping it's a small simple fix when I climb under the hood. Has happened before, but was an easy fix. The smell is much stronger this time. Any major problems any of you have had if I can't find the culprit?? Learning as I go...always up for checking on every possibility.

the past few days I started smelling diesel fumes in the cab of my truck with bent on and also at the front of the truck when installing new bumper and winch. It's not real strong in the cab but pretty stout at the bumper. I have poped the hood and made a quick visual inspection and from underneath the only evidence of any leak is some power steering fluid which is a different issue (I think)
a week or 2 ago I was cleaning the Ex and noticed 2 or 3 drops of red fluid on the concrete under the Ex I crawled under and looked up and the steering knuckle was pretty wet. Popes the hood and took a look from the top and the power steering pump was sticky and dirty but the only fluid was on the top of the cap.. I'm not real familiar with the set up on the Ex but I have heard the PS support the break booster. From visual inspection it seems as though the fluid is coming they the small (vent?) hole on the cap. What I can/need to do to stop this?
Got home today and smelled the "oil burning" smell. Blue smoke, didn't smell like brake pads. The smoke was evident from the right rear wheel. Put her in the garage and pulled the wheel. By the time this was done there was no smoke and no fluid anywhere, but there may not have been when it was smoking either. The drum was hot, the axle housing was not hot until closer to the drum/disc/wheel. The differential was slightly warm. Vent was not plugged. No obvious accumulation of lube or fluid on the inside of the wheel. Plenty of disc pad left. The actuator for the emergency brake that sticks out the back of the brake/plate assembly was super hot.
If I decide to pull the hub/rotor to inspect the brake shoes am I getting in far enough to commit to doing a full hub/bearing/seal inspect replacement? I'm getting old enough to pay a shop for this stuff and save my back, but if it's a no-brainer repair to get new seals I'd like to do it and save some bucks. Might as well do both sides right?
I'll be driving cross-country in June with a slide-in camper and want it done rather than a band aid job. It's never been checked before. 2006 F350 -- 150k miles. I'll keep searching the forum for answers but would like some opinions...
Left work tonight in heavy snow fall. Was in four wheel drive and following some slow pokes, till I could finally pass. I thought the smell was the cars ahead of me. Got to my crash pad, (5th wheel home away from home) and noticed the smell seemed stronger in the cab. Checked under hood and is not from the engine. Cab stinks bad.
