Ford 6.7L Power Stroke Diesel :: Turbo Noise In Tow / Haul While Descending A Hill
Sep 25, 2016
In addition to significantly louder noise from the Turbo on start-up, we've started to hear a pretty concerning noise while descending a hill in Tow-Haul. Not sure that the T/H has anything to do with it other than getting the engine in a RPM range that causes the noise. We've taken it in and tech says "That's just normal noise"... What ever that is.
Here is a link to an example : Tow haul making a lot of noise in my F350 diesel. Pulling a very heavy horse trailer. - YouTube

Just bought my 2013 Platinum 350 DRW 2 weeks ago. 9,000 miles on it. I was cruising along yesterday at around 45 mph in 6th gear going up a slight incline. Truck was fairly low rpm don't remember what exactly. As I'm going up this hill it begins to shudder quite a bit almost seemed like the turbo shuddering while lugging up the hill at a low rpm in 6th. I stepped into the throttle to get it to downshift into 5th and it stopped. I never experienced anything remotely like this in my 2011 6.7.

I do not think, I have seen anything about the engine shutting down descending a steep grade. first it threw the "wrench" warning and than that the engine was going on limp mode. luckily no one was on the road with me, coming or going. i pulled off on the shoulder with part of the pickup and 5er on the road. no steering or brakes used the 5er brakes to stop. turned the key off and restarted it again and no code or warnings. like nothing happened. it happened twice today between yellowstone park and great falls, mt. the second time the engine light stayed on and i had to stop and turn it off and restart it and it went away.

How do you diagnose a bad fan clutch? When driving in tow/haul mode I get a noise like a jet engine. It starts going down grade or upgrade and does not stop after leveling out. I have switched off tow/haul and it is still there. Over on the Diesel Stop site I found a couple of guys who have had the same problem. Concern is everything I have read there are no codes thrown. Have not taken to my local Ford Dealer to see what they say.
Driving a 2011 F-250, August 2010 build date with 76,500 miles. Problem started about 6 weeks ago when pulling an 8000 lb travel trailer in the White Mountains of NH.

a few times when making a tight turn on hilly terrain or a hill on a road, I've noticed a grinding sound in the front of the truck and a vibration in the steering wheel. I've so far chalked this up to the hill assist feature, but today I was on relatively flat ground in a parking lot with a dip in it. While crossing the dip in a tight turn, I noticed the same thing again.
I've checked the tires/wheel wells and there is no rubbing, etc.

I have a 2011 that does not currently have the complete factory exhaust system on it and no muffler. With the nice weather I have been driving around with the windows down and hear a noise out of the exhaust that sounds like tires spinning on wet pavement when I let off the throttle or at some shifts of the transmission. Boost seems normal, and don't hear any noise while under load. I think it is just the VGT closing and making the noise. With deleted sys heard this noise in exhaust?

I have a 2013 F350. Since it was new in August the turbo has made a chattering sound that sounds to me like the waste gate (if it had one) is opening and closing rapidly. Almost like its building boost and dumping it over and over again. Usually happens when it is in 6th gear around 1700 rpm under light load. It also does it from time to time while plowing snow. You can power through it or let off and it will go away. My local dealer where it was bought new put a new turbo on it and the problem still persists. The truck just turned over 8k miles and has been in several times in attempt to resolve the issue. They say that there are no codes on the truck nor does Ford have anything on their service web. My dealer claims that no one has ever had the issue.

I have a 2005 F250 with 186K miles. I do minor work on my vehicles but have little experience working on my diesel. I was accelerating when I heard a pop and a hiss similar to disconnecting an air hose from an air compressor. Total loss of turbo power. No turbo reading on the turbo gauge on dash. No loss of oil. No smoke. Oil and coolant look fine. Took off turbo and everything appeared to operate like it should (according to YouTube videos). Inspected lines and rubber boots.
Rubber has some cracks but not certain if they are holes. How small/large of a hole would cause total loss? Was originally scared to take it to a shop knowing they could name their price. Not opposed to taking it somewhere now knowing the turbo works but obviously would rather save the money. Any tips on troubleshooting? I'm not opposed to proactively replacing parts/sensors as the truck has given me 186k and I plan to keep it as long as possible.

My truck's been doing this ever since I got it when the engine is cold. Haven't brought it up to a dealer yet because I'm not sure it's a real problem, and since it only does it when it's cold I'd have to leave it overnight.
It seems to happen when the turbo hits a certain RPM. I got it on video but you can't really hear it until the end when I raise the RPMs a bit.

For a while now, I have been hearing a very high pitch whistle noise from the turbo/exhaust area. Everybody told me it was an exhaust leak, but I never could pin point the leak. While I was under the truck last weekend I found the flex joint on the passenger side up pipe was broken a leaking.
I ordered a Dorman replacement pipe that comes with a new gasket and hardware.
I will be the first to admit, I am not a fan of Dorman parts... BUT, this pipe is really nice. It looks identical to the pipe being sold on Dieselsite.com, it doesn't have the scoop inside to direct exhaust gas to the EGR cooler and it comes with all the mounting hardware.

Once I got the turbo down pipe out of the way and soaked the bolts with penetrating oil, I had the broken up pipe off in 30 minutes.

Is there a way to auto engage the Tow/Haul mode when you plug in a trailer that requires brakes? Be nice since I sometimes forget to push the button after we stopped for lunch...

So driving the other day and tow haul starts flashing. I come to a stop sign and goto take off and it barley takes off. It will barley roll if my foot is off the pedal sometimes wont even roll. Also won't shift into 6th. Once it gets rolling though say till about 25 it's fine. Just doesn't wanna take off? I scanned the trans but got no codes. And here are some pressures and stuff but I don't know what I'm looking for with the trans. This was all done in park.

I have a 2012 ford f350 SRW 4x4 with the 6.7L. Problem I have just started to have. When going downhill in tow haul the truck at first will hold you back then all of a sudden it starts to up shift at 20 mph it reaches 6th gear pretty quick. I talked to the dealer and they suggested I was pushing the shift buttons, but I am not. They told me to drive it till next week and then they will see if there are any codes in it.

My co-worker has an 06 F250 SC 4x4 and is getting a P0713 code. 2006 Ford F250 6.0L Diesel ... Tow/haul light comes on flashing at random times. Truck is reading a P0713 code which is the TFT Sensor Failure/Replacement
Ford dealership is telling me that I also have to pull the valve body and install the new upgraded wiring harness (3-3.5 hours labor) but a thread on this forum stated I just needed to replace the sensor in the tranny pan and reconnect the wire harness. Do I need to upgrade the wiring harness?

Title says it all. Chirping sounds almost like belt noise but appears to be coming underneath the vehicle (and from further back than the drivers seat). Goes away as soon as I turn off tow haul (which provides engine braking). A quick visual inspection finds nothing amiss. Trucks runs and drives normally with or without tow haul.

I have an 05 Excursion and I drove and parked it, no problem. Came back out and the trouble began. I looked on this site (always do for the best guidance and info) and replaced the trans position sensor, put tunes back to stock. Since then, I have had intermittent issues with the truck only starting with the code reader plugged in, idle jump to 750 rpm, and the tow/haul light flash and won't shift into OD. It also seems at full stops it is not in the low gear. I am driving it to the "stealership" today to have the computer flashed. Additionally, the blinkers won't flash, they only illuminate. All this started at once. Where all the ground straps/wires are??

Quick observation: with the exhaust brake switch off, I notice it appears that the exhaust brake is still working automatically when you are in Tow/Haul mode and apply the brakes coming down a hill.
I notice the engine drone and turbo boost gauge rise...although neither the drone nor the boost are as noticeable as when the switch is turned on.
I know the 2011-2014 had "auto exhaust brake only" but it appears some of that functionality is still built in.
Another question: what is the consequence of turning the exhaust brake on and leaving it on for normal driving? Is mpg affected? Engine output? Engine wear?
