The installation of the new 50 gal. Titan tank went well overall. Start up was smooth with no leaks but the fuel gauge is showing empty with about 45 gallons in the tank.
The sending unit was properly oriented ("clocked") so I'm guessing the electrical connector is not secure at the top of the sending unit. Not sure I can reach the connector without lowering the tank somewhat.
My fuel gauge acted pretty weird today. When I left my house today it was just above half a tank. I was sitting in traffic quite a bit and then looked down and it was below the e. I knew it wasn't empty so I kept going. Got to work. Went for lunch and it said full drove about 5 mins to eat and it went down to half a tank. What's going on? I am thinking of the fuel sender or wiring?
View 3 RepliesFor the second time in 6 weeks My 2004 F250 Powerstroke has run out of fuel with the gauge showing a 1/4 tank. First time it was just under a 1/4 showing I had it towed to dealer and they told me it had sucked in the filters requiring replace and flush of system. The told me that this happening very often and I would be replacing all of the injectors at my cost. I told them that I didn't want this to happen again and to check out the fuel gauge and sending unit and replace if in doubt. Well they checked it out and found nothing wrong, told me it was accurate and should not be an issue again. Now 6 weeks later on the Friday night before a holiday, it did it again, this time with over a 1/4 tank showing. I really don't want to spend 6 grand replacing injectors and would really like to trust my truck again, getting to the point that I'm nervous at 1/2 tank.
View 9 RepliesI recently replaced my gas tank in my Sundance, it was getting very rusty around the sending unit area and was starting to leak. Everything is back together and it is running well with no leaks. The new problem that it has, when the car is running, the gas gauge shows less than empty, even though it has a considerable amount of gas in it. When I shut the car off, the gas gauge slowly moves up to where it normally would be when it would be running. Did I somehow mess up the ground or did I cross something? This is my daily beater car and need a working gauge.

View 4 RepliesI have a 2001 f250 with the 5.4. from what I have read i should have the 38 gallon tank. i have been really questioning the accuracy of my fuel gauge on empty with the light on 25 gallons and the fuel pump will click off and after i drive i can park and my fuel gauge will read lower than what it was when i pulled into the driveway with. me and the wife went driving yesterday and we pulled back into the driveway on half a tank this morning I went to go run some errands and when i started the truck the gauge was almost on a quarter of a tank my driveway is flat and after driving for about 35 minutes the gauge was still in the same spot and did not move up nor down.
I have a locking gas cap cover so i know someone is not taking gas out. I have changed the fuel filter and tried numerous different fuel system cleaners to try and see if maybe the contacts on the float in the tank are dirty nothing has changed or gotten any better. I have checked the wire harness from the top of the tank and followed it up under the hood and found no drop in voltage or cracked or damaged wires. I checked with my multi-meter I used my fluke meter not some cheap one. Don't know if the gauge is reading less or more from getting gas i am thinking it is showing less than what is in the tank. What could be my problem?
Its been happening often where it shows empty (when i really have half a tank) and my avg mpg resets itself. As I am driving it will go back to normal.

Wife drove the truck before me and bunched the floor mat under the pedals. I didn't notice the mat issue when I drove the truck today. I accelerated fully after doing a left turn onto a busy highway. The motor spun up hard with the accelerator floored but because of the mats, the pedal stuck all the way down. I was approaching stopped traffic while under full acceleration and I shut the engine off and pulled over to the shoulder all while braking hard ( it was a hell of a ride!). I freed the pedal and restarted the engine.
Now, despite a bit less than 1/2 tank of fuel (I have the 38 gal tank), the dash readout was showing "Low Fuel", the gas gauge was below E and the engine was running like it was running out of fuel. I turned the engine off again and left it off for 1/2 hour before restarting it but the gauge and engine still behaved the same. As I drove to the nearest diesel station, the engine was not running "right". Of course the station I pulled into had 1 diesel pump and the pump was broken.
Because I thought I might actually be out of fuel, an understanding stranger took me to the store to buy some gas cans and then to another station to get 6 gallons of fuel. I got back to the truck and added the 6 gallons of fuel. When I turned the key on, the fuel gauge immediately came up to 1/2 tank. I then drove to that other station and added another 15 gallons of fuel to fill it. This confirmed that I had about 18 gallons of fuel in truck when the "Low fuel" warning occurred.
So, what the heck was going on with the fuel gauge? I am sure the "Low Fuel" warning is tied directly to the gauge but why was the gauge reading low? Is it possible that the "Key-off" while under full acceleration followed by hard braking had confused the ECU? I am just trying to figure out if I have a fuel sender problem or a confused computer that corrected itself. Until this incident, the fuel gauge has never been a problem but the wife messing up the mats has been an issue!
From all I can see, the fuel tank capacity on my '12 should be 17.5 gallons.
As I finish up a trip with it, I know I've "pushed the envelope" as far as fuel range is according to the guage/computer. I get the warning that I need to refuel and that I have 50 miles to empty, but I've driven 40 miles into that last range before refueling, and only been able to put 14 or so gallons into the tank.
My question is: If I were to drive until it literally runs out of gas, then fill it, would the guage/computer recalibrate or do I need to install a new fuel sensor?
I get the warning as the guage indicates just under 1/4 tank remaining, and I have yet to run it until the guage indicates that it's actually on empty (family and dog are with me so risking it is currently out). I'm hoping that the guage itself knows what the real deal is and that the computer is just not with it.... OH, FWIW full is EXACTLY on the "full" line and not over as in my Kia.
I have a 2004 F150 XLT 5.4 L 79,000 miles. Yesterday i was driving home turned a corner and the low fuel light came on and the fuel gauge is well below empty. I had approx 1/2 tank of fuel when it happened. I have since filled tank all the way but the gauge will not move and low fuel light stays on. Everything else is working fine! I have never run the truck low enough on fuel to make the dummy light come on.....
View 5 Replies2004 Venture LT ... The newest problem I am having that I haven't resolved is that the fuel gauge is showing empty, low fuel light on, range on trip computer says (E). I repaired the wiring harness's on the left and right front due to ac leakage, and I also repaired the pass through behind the drivers seat. This seemed to resolve many of the problems I was having.
The thing I noticed is that before I repaired the pass through connector the gauge would work intermittently but now its totally dead. I find it unlikely that the sender and the connector would go out at the same time. Any wiring diagram of that connector, or at least which color the wires are for the sending unit and the resistance values I should get?
I have a 2004 Hyundai accent hatchback with 225000km. The first time I drove it for over an hour, 1 trip no stops, the fuel gauge dropped to empty while there was 3/4 of a tank. The 2nd time I drove over an 1 the fuel gauge dropped again and the gas light came on (again around 3/4 of a tank). My mechanic said until it does it consistently he can't diagnose so I let it go.
More recently, driving it to and from work 5 days, plus some extra city driving, I used 1/4 tank the full week. Today I picked up 4 winter tires and bringing them home (approximately the same distance as my work) I used 1/4 tank right there. I understand it is weighed down, but could it really be that much? What is causing the fuel jumps and gauge jumps? I've already had the float replaced.
Full tank and the gauge reads empty. Has happened to me a few times. Occurs after a fillup and disappears after the car is left to sit for a while off. I would hate for this to happen on a long drive. Dealer hasn't been able to duplicate the issue. Am wondering if this might be related to the hiccup in some way. Also, am wondering if this is a fuse issue.

I know that I have more than a half tank of gas, the car continuously turns over but wont start. I replaced the fuel pump and still it wont start (not to mention that the tank was more than half full at the time). I checked all the fuses and relays and everything seems fine. I am not even getting gas pumped to the filter.

All has been well in just over a month of driving the car and about 3300 miles logged. The 12v, Aux battery was dead from the car sitting on the lot for so long (I replaced with a new OEM Toyota 12v battery) After a week of the car experiencing dim headlights, and various other electronics

I believe that my gas gauge or the sending unit in the tank is bad. The gauge will show empty when the tank has fuel and then it will sometimes read normal.
So yesterday I was driving home from work.. I know my tank was 3/4 full. All of a sudden, my low fuel light came on and my gas gauge needle went to empty.
The needle sits at E, but it still says about 20 miles till empty on the MFD. When I left the house this morning, it said 5miles till empty.. by the time I got to work, it said 20. Kinda odd..
I will hook up the vagcom when I get home tonight, any area I should scan for? or just a complete scan? There is no CEL error on the dash though. What I could look at to fix this?
I bought a 2006 F250 6.0L a couple of months ago, from a dealership. It's been bulletproofed already, has an intake, coolant filter kit. Has 95k (mileage). Today, my fuel gauge dropped to empty from 3/4 of a tank for a couple of miles and set off the CE light. I hooked my scan tool to it, to clear the code (P0460).
After just checking other things out with the scan tool. I cleared it and went on... I had to run to the store, later on... I was pulling out of the neighborhood and the gas pedal was a lot more "touchy" and the truck, responded to it and it launched pretty good and blew a good amount of black smoke.
Do any of you think this has/or had a tuner on it and I may have activated it with my scanner?
