2015 6.7 KR... when idling for long periods of time the cab starts to smell like exhaust. I've also noticed when standing outside the truck with it idling (not in regen), it freaking stinks, bad! My 2003 never had this problem and idled for days (literally). Possibly leaky gasket here or just the nature of the 6.7?
View 14 RepliesLately I have noticed a lot of blueish smoke coming from my exhaust at idle mostly while warming in the morning though it would do it if the truck idled for a few minutes. I took it to the dealer because I have fords ESP but the tech couldn't get the truck to smoke and wasn't getting any codes so he sent it back with a clean bill of health. After getting it back I noticed it smoking again so I picked up the egr valve kit pulled the valve and cleaned it as best I could and replaced the seals, that was last night. This morning it was blowing more smoke than it has before and has continued all day whether cold or warm. I just changed the oil last week and it's still full so it isn't burning any. Head gaskets were done along with studs last month, egr is obviously intact, cat is gone. I'm really at a loss for this, It's an 07 f350 scsb 6.0...
View 6 RepliesI have an option to buy a e450 with a 6.0, 100k mi, with a utility body. I have the same thing but an 03 with a 7.3. this van has some known issues, biggest being it sat for a year and a half. it was parked due to excessive smoke out the exhaust. Ford shop diagnosed it as bad head gaskets, personally I am not believing it. There is no evidence of puking on the degas cap, and someone removed the band clamp from the down pipe and there is nothing but a little soot, so I don't really think a turbo seal either. The batteries were dead tonight so I am going to take a set of batteries down and see what happens. he is only asking 6000 as is. I am thinking probably egr cooler, egr valve or injector problem. If I buy it I am going to install a new oil cooler, blue spring, clean the turbo and delete the egr. Late 2004 engine btw.
View 14 RepliesI have a friend with a 2012 F250. The truck has 100K miles and it does idle for extended periods. The other day his check engine light comes on so he took it the shop. They had not told him anything yet, but they did tell him that he had about a gallon to much oil. They said it was fuel.
View 7 RepliesI have an exhaust smell in the cab of the truck. It is pretty strong. Seems worse when it is really cold outside and goes away when outside temps warm up. I checked the tube (passenger side behind engine) and did not see any soot.
View 12 RepliesWas cold this morning, -15c, and I remote started the truck and then left home about 5min later. I could smell exhaust in the cab. I read some of the other threads about this. How can I tell if it was doing a regen? I have an Edge Insight. Is the a parameter I can display to know the regen was active?
View 14 RepliesGot to thinking today while my truck was warming up, why does the exhaust smell so bad. I think it is kinda interesting that the exhaust pipe is so clean also, like new matter of fact.
So what make the exhaust smell? The exhaust filter traps the partials right but where did the diesel smell go? I can understand it when in regen but in normal operation I don't get it. I guess I just don't the mechanics behind it. All I do know is that, what is left just stinks especially when warming up.
I bought my 2015 F250 last November, and this spring my check engine light comes on with the message exhaust system fluid fault with the anoyying speed limitation. Bring the truck back to the dealer and they just say add def fluid, so I just have them do it. 2 weeks later the message comes back, bring it back to the dealer and they tell me it "needs reprograming" they do the work, light goes off. two weeks later light comes on again. Dealer puts in new exhaust sensors and reprograms the truck.
This fix lasts a few months in the mean time the truck shutters really bad under regeneration mode. Talk to dealer they claim its normal. Finally this week the light comes back on again. Bring the truck to the dealer and Ford keeps telling them that it only needs reprograming but that doesn't fix the problem. The dealer wants to replace the computer but ford isn't letting them do it (the truck is still under warranty) . I am starting to get pretty mad when I went out and bout a 65k truck not to have these problems.
We've had a run of -20 to -40 weather here for the past few weeks.
A few weeks back I noticed that when I climbed into my truck after command-start warm up for 10 minutes, and I could smell strong exhaust.
I figured it was hopefully the wind, or an isolated event.
Over the past few weeks I've used my truck for 3-4 more around town runs and every time I warm it up I get the strong exhaust smell. It's that rich, eye watering, sickening exhaust smell. I also notice a small yellow frozen puddle under the exhaust tips that wasn't there before.
It's bad in the cab, but even walking around outside the truck and the smell is sickening. I actually just started the truck and I could actually smell the exhaust smell faintly, from inside my house! This has never before occurred. Prior to this, a person could hardly tell it was a diesel by the smell of the exhaust.
Once the truck is up to temperature the smell seems to disappear, or at least lessen.
Started smelling exhaust in the cab while idling, and at startup. After further investigating found out the EGR inlet tube is leaking at the flex joint. So my question is , is there anything that will jump at me while I'm doing this tube replacement.
View 3 RepliesI just took my new (to me) 2012 F350 out for it's first real tow job; pulled our 9,500lb travel trailer up and over the Sierra Nevada Mountains for a week long camping trip.
Under load, I started to smell a burning metal/paint smell in the cab, to the extent that I was wondering if something was wrong. All of the gauges were fine, and there was no unusual smell under the hood.
My wife discovered the floor on the passenger side was hot to touch (directly above the exhaust), and it actually started to melt a few plastic items in her purse.
I did just have the EGR valve replaced after it threw a code; not sure if there's some coating on the new one that could be burning off.
Isit normal for the floorboard to be that hot when working thes trucks?
I have been smelling a slight exhaust smell in the cab of the EX. I slide under the truck and looked at the up pipes and bellows. I saw a slight amount of soot on the outside of both bellows. So does that mean I have a leak? What is the most economical fix? Does the turbo need to be removed?
View 4 RepliesUsually in the OBS 7.3 but a buddy of mine with a 2003 6.0 is having some issues. When he romps on the pedal but when he does so he claims he can smell exhaust in the ventilation system. I rode with him and smelt it as well. So I inspected all exhaust clamps and piping as best I could and did not notice any soot or leaks while running. I don't know if it pertains to it or not but his heater only works on defrost.
View 4 RepliesToday I drove to dinner in my 2012 6.7 with no problems then on the way home my brother said he noticed my truck was white smoking quite a bit and he said there was a very strong exhaust smell coming from my truck ( he was in his car behind me) I ran a diagnostic test and what came up was code P0401 (I believe that's right). Need to figure out what is going on with my truck before I take it to the mechanics and get charged up. The truck still has DPFs in it just has a DPF back exhaust and has a AFE cold air intake running on a stock tune. However I do have the DPF deletes and EGR delete sitting in my garage just haven't gotten them on the truck yet.
View 2 RepliesSo how long does one have to crank until it is considered an extended crank? 2 seconds, 5 seconds, 10 seconds.....?
The reason I ask is after all the motor work I did on my truck sometimes she fires up in less than 1 second of cranking and other times it take maybe 2 seconds of cranking. I do not think 2 seconds is considered and extended crank time but was just curious about what is considered extended cranking.
I noticed a rough idle after driving an hour with a 6000 lb trailer and stopped at an offramp. Had no performance issues to that point in an hour drive. Then I noticed a good amount of white smoke coming out of the exhaust. The idle felt just like when I had a contribution/balance code on #5 a year ago, and a new injector fixed that. Before long (10-20 minutes later) the idle got real loud, like a big knock/loud tick every revolution.
I had a bunch of stored codes, so I reset them and later found a P0281 - Cylinder 7 contribution/Balance and P0404 - EGR control circuit range/performance were the 2 that came back. I drove it 2 more hours to get home. It ran well under load, but coasting or stopped gave the loud knock, and stopped and idling was a rough, inconsistent idle. It even stalled on me 3 times when braking for a red light (auto trans). There was a lot of white smoke all the time, plus a little dark smoke on acceleration.
What would you recommend for troubleshooting steps? I could put a new injector in #7 and clean the EGR valve, but want to have a good idea that will fix it first. Is there a good chance I have a messed up piston in #7 now?

P0148 Fuel delivery error
P0234 turbo overboost (i know i need to pull and clean the turbo anyway, unrelated to today's issue)
P0281 Cylinder 7 contribution/Balance
P0404 EGR control circuit range/performance
P0670 Glow plug (I had the module unplugged a while ago)
P0683 Glow plug (I had the module unplugged a while ago)
I have a 2001 F-350 w/7.3. There was excessive smoke coming from the exhaust. So the first thing I did was to pull the glow plugs to see what they looked like. and while having them out I cranked the engine over. Upon doing so I noticed 1 cylinder putting fuel out of the hole. Meaning it was like you could put your hand about 6 inches above the hole and your hand would be wet from fuel. None of the other cylinders was like that. So what I did was pull the injector from the cylinder next to it and put it in to see if it was the injector failing. But it was still doing the same thing. What would cause this??
View 3 RepliesI bought 2015 Sonata SE, it was produced in April of 2015. It drives nice and overall its OK but it has an excessive vibration that gives me a headache. When stopped at light/traffic with AC on it feels as if I was sitting in a vibrating massage chair. The steering wheel and seat vibrates. When I shut off AC it vibrates less but still seems to be vibrating too much. I know that 4 cylinder will vibrate some but I did not expect getting a massage while sitting in the car. It does not vibrate while driving, just in idle.
I am so unhappy with it that I am ready to trade cars with my DH who drives 10 year old Accord with manual transmission that vibrates less than my brand new car. What do I do? I will be taking it to the dealer but would like to go prepared and educated. I did see some posts about ECU and TSU updates (whatever that means) but it seems that it applied to cars manufactured in 2014?
I'm losing coolant have, excessive white smoke coming from the exhaust, and rough idle. Doesn't over heat or even try to overheat. The oil fill cap looks brownish white. It drives fine other than extremely rough idle. I know how to check a blown head gasket with the combustion gas test.
From what I've read blown head gaskets on 4.6 fords are fairly uncommon but a blown intake gasket is fairly common. How can I tell the difference?
I'm having an issue with massive oil consumption and no oil leaks on the ground! No clue where the oils going but I burned more than 2 gallons today in a few hours of driving exhaust smells awful but the truck is running fine.
View 14 RepliesI've topped up the DEF and the warning is still showing that I'll have reduced engine power within 45kms.
Its weird, just yesterday it showed 550kms to empty so I added one full container, all day it kept showing less and less kms' til empty. Warning lights and bells etc.
This evening topped it completely and still shows. Is there a way to reset it without having to stop at the service dept.
