Well, my water separator light has been coming on and going off for the past week. Today, I finally thought about it while drinking a beer, and decided I'd pull the plug to see what I can catch.
As you can see from the pictures, this brownish color crap comes flowing out, followed by clean fuel. What it is? I've drained the separator in the past, but never have I seen this come out.
Anyway, Just bought a used 2015 F350. I want to drain the water separator as the dealer can't tell me when it was done last. Anyway, I read how to do it, but once you drain it, what do you do with the diesel that drains out with?

View 6 RepliesHad the ole factory fuel separator/bowl drain start leaking on me about a month back. So i ordered and installed a new one, issue fixed. Well last night the fuel leak started again, I looked everywhere and i cant see anywhere else it may be leaking at. I felt the underside of said piece and it didn't feel wet, but the valley is full of fuel.
I got in there and tightened the 4 bolts down some more, they were tight but i got a some turns on em and am hoping i either didn't tighten it down enough or they maybe backed out some. Now just gotta see if that solves the problem, again.... the replacement is a doorman, the o-rings were bigger/thicker than the factory orings on the old part, of which the o-rings were shot.
Like I said once i replaced the part the leak stopped for 3 weeks until last night. If the tightening of the bolts doesn't solve it where should I look next? I have an FRX mod but i checked all that and its dry as a bone around all the fittings by the bowl and the heads. No indications of leaks anywhere around any of the FRX assembly.
I have a very small fuel leak in my 2001 F-250. I was going to just let it go until I needed to do other work (since I get 20mpg city and 25mpg highway), but I went to a "new" inspection guy, and he flunked me. So now I have to fix it. And for all I know, my mpg and fifteen other things will break when I try to fix this.
Today I spent 4 hours in the heat putting in two new o-rings on the water separator valve. But the truck still leaks fuel. Climbed up on top of motor while it was running and looked, but I don't see where the fuel is leaking out.
Online research suggests to me that the next most-likely culprit is a steel fuel line that wears through from vibration and chafing. Is that correct?
This truck is so eaten up with rust (came from salt belt) that I bought a LOT of fuel line stuff a year or so ago, so that when things started falling apart from rust, I would have the parts on hand.
Now I'm wondering whether I already have the part I'm likely to need.
So far, I have bought:
1. Dorman Fuel Supply and Return Lines
2. Riff Raff Diesel High Pressure Crossover (HPx)
3. Riff Raff Diesel Fuel Rail Crossover (FRx)
So my question is, am I likely to have something to replace the part that commonly leaks on these trucks due to vibration/wear/chafing ... or will I still need to buy another part?
I'm thinking that one of the two lines in item #1 above is the problem child...
So today. I filled my truck full of diesel. when I started it back up, it through the wrench light plus drain water separator. What it could be I have a loss in power. wont get over 45mph.
View 2 RepliesOn my 2006 6.0 the water in fuel warning kept coming on the dash. After going draining a few times and a few tanks later I knew something wasn't right so I bought a new sensor. When I pulled the old sensor out, it was full of gunk that was like a white jelly. I probably could have just cleaned the old sensor but I put the new one in anyway. My issue went away for a few months when the WIF alert came back. I pulled the sensor out again and sure enough it was gummed up. I've decided to pull that little panel door off and clean the inside. I have a few questions:
1) Can that oring be purchased separatly?
2) Can I just reuse my oring if it still looks good?
My water in the fuel light came on for the first time since I have owned the Excursion, which is a little over a year. Only thing i have done different is Monday this week i put in some hot shot diesel fuel additive to try with stiction. Dothe additive is the cause of the light to come on?
View 2 RepliesNot another dumb "water in fuel" post... I had the warning light come on the other day, so I got under to drain the filter. Not much water came out before the diesel, but I let some diesel drain anyway to be sure. What was strange though, was the electrical connection was off. I must have hit something somehow and pulled it out? What I'm wondering, because of the little water that came out of the filter, would the light have come on from the plug getting pulled out?

View 3 RepliesSo I am happily driving my 2011 F250 Powerstroke and the water in fuel light comes on. I drain the filter and drive about 10 miles and it happens again. Drain again and 5 miles later the engine dies. Had it towed to my dealer who found an exploded high pressure diesel injection pump. They talked to Ford and found out that they needed to install an all new fuel system from the injectors to the tank! The bill was 18,000 and no warrantee. Bad stuff gets right by the filters!!! I have two of those trucks and since the dealer used exactly the same parts as the broken ones, it can happen today again.
View 14 RepliesI have a 2006 f250 with 120k. I am having trouble getting the water in fuel light off. I drainned the water out and replaced both filters and the fuel water sensor. The check engine light is now on and the water in fuel light is as well. I'm stumped and can't figure out what to do next. Will the check engine light come on as well with the water in fuel light or is it two different problems?
View 2 RepliesMy battery light has been coming on and then going off, just back and forth, for a few days now. The light stays on about 80% of the time. I have new batteries and the alternator is about three years old. I've checked the voltage from the alternator to the batteries while the light is on and I'm getting 13.85 volts on the multimeter. I've checked and cleaned terminals just to be sure they are corrosion free and right, I've checked the ground to make sure it's right.
View 1 Replies2004 F-250 6.0 Turbo Diesel W/ Torque Shift Transmission. Im having a problem with my Check Gauge light coming on and Tow Haul light flashing on my 04 F-250. I got a Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor from my local Ford Dealership. They also said i needed to replace the Transmission harness for this application because of an open circuit.
My questions are, Is Mercon SP the only ATF that can be used on the Torque shift transmission and do i really need to replace the harness or just the sensor? I have read up a little on this and so far everything say's drain the fluid, drop the trans pan, swap out the sensor, replace the trans pan (torque setting is 11flbs I believe, correct me if I am wrong, replace with Mercon SP ATF and your good to go.
Changed fuel filters today. Now my water in fuel light is coming on. But the truck is not running any different no sputtering or anything. ????? Could this be human error
View 14 RepliesI have a 06 F250 6.0 My battery light has been coming on. Doesn't stay on but I'm planning a trip back east and don't want any issues to occur. I was thinking maybe the batteries. So I stopped at the local Oreilly's Auto store and had them tested. Told the guy what it was doing and he said it sounded like the alternator. He tested it and said it was going bad. He also tested the batteries and said they were good. So I went looking for a replacement alternator and they have different amp sizes. So I'm not sure on what size the original one is and if the replacement should be a bigger size amp wise.
View 11 RepliesI have a new to us 08 e350 6,0 that had a little problem with the oil light coming on at idle and deltas of 20-40 degrees. I put a manual gauge on and press seemed ok, bad sending unit. So finally got back to it and just pulled the oil cooler. OMG it came out, hardly any "oil" around it but semi solid sludge 2 inches thick all around it. Looks like an old 302 someone never changed the oil on. The pic is 2 chunks next to a 1/4 snap on ratchet, ya my camera sucks drank too muck coolant. Seen sludge around an oil cooler before ?
View 14 RepliesI have ran 05 f250 and the wrench light keeps coming on mostly when I'm doing highway driving or when I go to pass someone. iv putt code readers on it(autoparts store readers and the good expensive ones)and i keep getting bad egr and some other codes but when I have the truck looked at everything is prefect I had a flush done on the truck and and it still comes on randomly . Could the fact that it needs an oil change cause the light to come on intermittently or is something else going on??
View 8 RepliesI just picked up a 2011 Ford F350 about 8 months ago. I have had troubles with the check engine light coming and going. Now it's been on for good with loss of power. I have had the codes read and they came up as the p0401 and a code about the def heater. I can not remember that code off the top of my head. After some searching I have found a video about the def heater but nothing about the Egr cooler/valve. Is there anything out there about how to clean and remove the the cooler as I will be needing to do repairs myself as the truck has no warranty.
View 10 RepliesI recently observed coolant temps of up to 217 degrees as reported by my mini max and oil of 230 as reported by the dash while towing 9000 pounds from San Diego to Las Vegas on the 15 going up the 16 mile mountain grade. My temp gauge on the dash never moved a bit, it stayed in the same spot from 199 to 217 so I assume its not too hot. My mini max defuel setting has the coolant temp at 220? I slowed down and tried to keep it under 210.
View 8 RepliesWe have been having near zero temps for several days and it occurred to me that there may be some amount of water in the water separator in the rail mounted fuel filter (not enough to send a message, but maybe some amount). I only have 3,000 miles on the truck. So, just wondering if a small amount of water is going to hurt anything in the filter or filter housing if it freezes? Should I drain the filter in freezing weather even though enough water hasn't collected enough to activate a message?
