New to the 6 liter powerstroke recently upgraded from my 7.3. Recently this odd whistle sound started and I can't quite seem to fogure out the cause. At first it only happened if I was going 70 mph and now it will do it anytime it builds more than 15lbs of boost. I tried tightening some clamps and stuff but that did nothing.
View 14 RepliesI posted earlier about a whistle that appeared when I was towing my old travel trailer (6000 pounds). It only happened a couple of times, and I had a hard time replicating it, so I elected not to waste any money with the deductable, and possible additional costs for a non-covered issue at the stealership.
Now, I am towing a larger 5th wheel trailer (11000 pounds), and am experiencing this whistle on every steep grade, while towing. Below are a couple of things I noticed, that had to be, before I would get the whistle:
* It only seems to happen while the cooling fan is engaged, and also only when the rpms reached 2800 and above.
*If the fan was on, but the rpms were turning below 2800 rpms, then it would not whistle. It would, however, after the transmission downshifts, bringing the rpms back up, while climbing.
*If the engine was spinning at 2800 rpms, and the engine fan was not engaged, then it would not whistle, until the fan would kick in.
* It only seems to occur when I am climbing a steep grade, on a warm day. Although, I haven't experimented on steep grades on a cold day...
It sounds to me like there is an issue with the engine fan system, but I thought I would put it out there, just in case any of the diesel guru's out there might know of something else that would cause a whistle like this, i.e., turbo?
Oh by the way, I also think that I have a performance reduction lately. However, I can't know for sure, as I have never towed this much weight with my truck before. I just kind of expected that I would be able to pull to the top of these grades, with a little extra peddle to spare. I have to floor it, just to "try" and keep up with traffic. And I haven't calculated my fuel mileage while towing this beast yet, but WOW, that fuel gauge needle sure does drop like a rock!
Are they known to cause any noise? VGT Solenoid.
I have recently developed a slight whistle/squeal when boosting and when letting off on the pedal. I initially thought I had a CAC boot starting to split out, but since it's making the noise when I let off as well I doubt that the problem.
It isn't constant, and only does it for a second or two when it happens. It's not extremely loud, just loud enough to make you wonder what the heck it is...
For a while now, I have been hearing a very high pitch whistle noise from the turbo/exhaust area. Everybody told me it was an exhaust leak, but I never could pin point the leak. While I was under the truck last weekend I found the flex joint on the passenger side up pipe was broken a leaking.
I ordered a Dorman replacement pipe that comes with a new gasket and hardware.
I will be the first to admit, I am not a fan of Dorman parts... BUT, this pipe is really nice. It looks identical to the pipe being sold on Dieselsite.com, it doesn't have the scoop inside to direct exhaust gas to the EGR cooler and it comes with all the mounting hardware.

Once I got the turbo down pipe out of the way and soaked the bolts with penetrating oil, I had the broken up pipe off in 30 minutes.
It only happens on a very Rare occasion.
When Cold, and when I start out as I open the throttle, it suddenly sounds like there is not a piece of quieting stuff on the engine. I mean its like I can hear right into the engine itself.
I back off, It goes away then I dont hear it again for another Month or two.
Recently my brother in laws truck started making a buzzing sound while running and a much louder sound after it shuts off. Trying to track down the sound. Listen to the whole video because the end is where it gets loud.

So I have just over 14k on my 2015....... I love the truck but have had a few small issues. I had a water leak coming in from the roof that would leak through the grab handle. Nothing major dealer replaced one clearance light seal and they said the windshield needs to be re sealed.
Then I had a god awful irritating squeak in the dash..... It only does it late In the day when it's been hot. The dealer said it was a loose air bag. I have had the truck back a week and it's doing it again.
Those are little issues that will get resolved...... I hate having problems with a brand new vehicle but I understand it happens and that's what warranty is for.
I also reported a bad shake to the dealer...... The truck will shake very violently and have a very loud "diesel" sound. It's very specific at when it occurs. It has only done 4 times in the past 6 weeks including today. The odd thing is the 4 times it has done it has been the same time of day in the exact same spot on the exact same road!!!!
Basically I leave my office sit in some traffic and by the time I get to the parkway it has been35 minutes or so. Only happens in 6th at 60 which is roughly 1,400rpm a slight load due to a small incline and it shakes real bad! The typical "diesel" sound you get when under a load is very pronounced almost to a knock. It will continue to do this as you slowly increase throttle until it down shifts and then goes away. I also caught it doing it and I manually shifted to 5th and it went away.
Because of the rpm at which it happens with slight load only doing it in 6th I lean to a Trans issue and more so a converter problem. It feels like converter shutter. I just don't understand the engine sound.
I gave very descriptive info to the dealer..... Several techs drove it and could not duplicate. I just picked the truck back up last Thursday and the dash squeak is back and the shake happened yesterday and again today. So I am a bit irritated to say the least.
I really hate the fact that I know there is a problem but I also understand if a tech can't duplicate it he can't diagnose it. However today I did get a video of it with my phone so they will know I'm not making this crap up!
it's now 1,500 miles away on the side of the road.White smoke, knocking and lost power. Truck has 133,000 reman engine installed at 46,000. Is it common for hydro locking to bend a rod? He sent a video and it def sounds like a rod and degas is empty.
View 9 RepliesMy power steering pump was making a loud whining sound. No problem, changed the pump. Now after the truck is started I will have no power steering or brake assist, give the truck a little gas and you can hear the power steering pump "start". I have tried every way to get the air out, or is that not the problem. I even lifted the front of the truck off the ground with a forklift and with the truck off turned the wheel about six times stop to stop. Fluid level looks good and has since adding after the change.

Last transmission service - unknown (I have owed the truck for 3,000 miles). I just acquired a clunking sound when shifting from R to P or R to N. No noise from N to D or lower or back up to D. It does not grind into gear, just clunks one time. It is rather loud.
All shifting while driving is normal, no slipping, or noise. This occurs on level ground, at operating temp, and +-650 RPMs.
Fluid level is okay. No strange odor. What will be the next steps to investigate?
My truck will intermittently sound like an old 7.3 clattering away. It's done this for some time now. If I accelerate briskly it'll quiet down. When I first got it (used) it was quiet as a church mouse. It seems to normally be during the 1st 20min or so of a run. Weather and fuel doesn't seem to be a factor nor does it matter whether I have additive in the tank or not. My truck is a May '10 build 2011 with about 60k miles on it now.
Is this normal? Same 7.3 noise from the 6.7?
My 2011 is making a strange humming sound after shutdown. It seems to be related to the normal waste gate sound. I have a video....

After shutting truck down I would say 15-30 seconds after some type of pump or solenoid starts running and does so for another 30 seconds or so ( from the frontnofmthentruck). What this might be? Also have noticed it just once after starting I was walking around the front of the truck and heard this buzzing sound once again.
View 6 RepliesBack again.. I just replaced the HPOP and IPR valve on my truck a few weeks ago. While the turbo was out I cleaned it and applied a small amount of anti seize on the unison ring. When installing the turbo I had moved the y-pipe a little to get the turbo in place. About a week after it was running again I started to get a squealing noise under acceleration. The noise isn't a whistle like the turbo but an actual squeal. Its a little bit louder than the turbo whistle. If I am in park and rev the engine it doesn't happen. It only happens when I accelerate and seems to be when there is boost. If I let off the gas pedal the noise stops. I don't have an issue with making boost. I did replace the turbo boot when it was apart a few weeks ago so I don't think that is the problem I checked the y-pipe clamp and down-pipe clamp and both are fine. I replaced the serpentine belt this past weekend and checked all pulleys, they were all very good with no play. Another thing, the pitch of the noise seems to change with rpm's too. What could be causing this type of noise?
View 14 RepliesI bought my 6.0L Diesel about a month ago. Recently when I turn to the left it makes a weird popping sound and gets the "death wobble" If I turn it sharply to the left it will then stop. Last night it got terribly worse and it wobbled at any speed no matter what. I put it up on jack stands and turned the wheel with both tires off the ground, and the sound still happens. I am only by myself and I tried to figure out what is wrong with recording on my phone to see if a ball joint was freezing up but couldn't see. Is there anywhere I should focus on more or less with the camera to see what the issue could be?
View 6 RepliesMy 6.0 is making a weird scuffing sound when I let off the gas and after it shifts. If I drive easy it doesn't seem to happen. But if I have to accelerate fast it will make the sound in between shifts and if I let off the gas real fast it will make the sound. It only lasts for about 3 seconds or so. It sounds like its possibly in the exhaust.

While pulling my camper after it gets warm it puts out a very loud whistle it seems to happen when the fan clutch kicks in it does not sound like a belt squeal it almost sounds like it's coming from the turbo area. The engine seems to Surge while this is going on but the RPM gauge doesn't dictate that it almost sounds like it's the fan clutch surging. I took a short video of it while it was doing it ...
View 14 RepliesWell, since I replaced the MAP hose a few weeks ago the old girl has been running fine. Until yesterday. I was leaving work and she had low boost, less than 10PSI, and as I passed by a parked tractor trailer I could hear the sound of high pressure air escaping because I had my window rolled down.
So today I checked it out. I found three possible leaks spots, BUT no "smoking gun". Take a look at the pics. The damage you are seeing is on the outside of the hot side boot at the turbo and the bottom of the cold side CAC tube. The cracks don't appear to penetrate to the inside. Could these still be possible leak sites? IDK.
I'm going to order replacements anyway. Ford wants WAY to much for these parts. I checked the MAP hose and it is just like new from several weeks ago. Also, I inspected the inter-cooler as best that I can without removing it. I don't see any issues with the tanks or the tank-to-core mounting. It all looks normal. If it does fail where does it normally fail at?
After pulling my fifth wheel, I will unhook and the truck sits. The next morning, the truck will sound like it is wheezing for about a minute or so... I high pitched whine sorta. But only on the cooler mornings, after towing.
Thoughts on this? Can't really take it to the dealer yet because its too sporadic.
My ford f250 i have a intermittent knocking sound when i turn the ac/ heater? it is not all the time and can never tell when it is going to happen. i always think the worse like it is a cylinder or something.

When I am sitting at a stop at idle and have the brake pressed i hear a humming sound and the pedal vibrates but when I am moving an press the brake it doesn't do it. Ive checked the pads all around they're fine brake fluid is fine it didn't start doing this till a few days ago.
I am just trying to figure this out before i end up going down the road one day and go to stop and have nothing there.
