Ford 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel :: 2005 - Coolant Leak Intermittent But Persistent

Dec 17, 2014

The drip pan under my 2005 X 6.0 was relatively full with coolant last week. The leak is intermittent, but persistent. After investigating, it appears to be coming from somewhere on the driver's side on the back of the engine. The coolant is running down the seam where the transmission mounts to the block, but I can't get my mirror back there to see exactly where it's coming from. It's not coming from the side of block and there's no evidence of coolant on top (in the valley).

I've only been doing "city" driving (no towing or highway trips) since before the leak began and the max ECT I've observed is around 205*, with 40-60* ambient temps. It's not overheating, but I have noticed the heater air is cool when I'm at a stoplight, suggesting the coolant level is low (I've refilled coolant once and heater worked fine afterwards).

I have not observed oil in the degas bottle, but have not yet checked the dipstick for coolant bubbles in the oil. Also, FWIW, I had to replace my degas bottle back in October after it cracked on the side. I do use ELC free, red coolant, have a coolant filter and flushed the system about 18 months ago.

Thoughts on source of coolant leak? Don't say head gasket....

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: Persistent Coolant Leak At The Thermostat Outlet

The truck has been a dream for several months and I had a coolant leak at the thermostat outlet. Changed the fitting and thermostat and sealed with lots of blue monkey snot. It's been perfect for a couple months but a week ago it started leaking again. Exactly the same as last time. I cleaned the mating surface of the water pump with a plastic scraper to remove the old sealer and then finished it with fine scotch brite. I looked at several parts breakdowns and none of them showed a gasket.......

Ford 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel :: Coolant Leak / Drips Off The Power Steering Pump

I am having a heck of a time finding this coolant leak. It drips off the power steering pump. I replaced the upper radiator hose and the heater "y" hose that goes to the bottom of the Degas bottle. I recently replaced the lower radiator hose as well. So the truck runs normal. When the system is under pressure I do not see any leaks. But after the engine is completely cold it starts leaking a small puddle of coolant. Its appears to be coming from the power steering pump. But I am sure its something above or near it. This is on my 2005 Excursion with a 6.0. Can the water pump be going bad and leaking this direction. I would expect a water pump to leak straight down the middle of the engine. What to look for? The thermostat seal stays dry. but it has to be in that area. What is really messing with me is. When it is hot and pressured up It does not seem to leak. Only after it has been sitting for hours and cools off..........What the heck!

Ford 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel :: Coolant Leak / Hole In Radiator

I am in the middle of a several thousand mile road trip, and I am with family in Utah when this evening I noticed a puddle under my 6.0 Excursion.

The fluid does not smell like typical coolant, but from the location of the drip, I cant think of it being anything else.

Ford 6.7L Power Stroke Diesel :: Coolant Leak From Motor Front?

Nothing to be alarmed about, I'm just letting y'all know I have a coolant leak on the front of the motor. It leaks about 8oz. Of fluid/week.

I have been through the radiator issues, 5 in all on my '08 and 1 on my '11 at 52,000 miles. This one is different, I'm pretty sure it's the water pump.

I'll give the official word as soon as I can get it diagnosed. I guess it's because I tow all the time, nothing real heavy, just everyday use. Truck is hardly ever on its own.

Ford 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel :: Coolant Leak And Pressure Loss

I recently had an upper radiator hose bust and ever since I have been having a slight water leak. It appeared to be coming from between the layers of rubber on the new hose which I replaced twice since the incident. Both hoses had water seeping from the same location. This afternoon I plan on doing a pressure test on the cooling system to diagnose where the water may be coming from.

My question is could a loss of pressure cause larger than normal Oil and Water deltas? If I have to replace the radiator is there a particular manufacturer or type I should avoid? Should I try to get a factory replacement from Ford or would an Autoparts unit be sufficient? The original is still in the truck now with 286,000 miles on it.

Ford 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel :: Coolant Leak From EGR Cooler O-Ring

I installed a BPD EGR cooler about 4 years ago just as a preventative measure (along with an oil cooler) in my '06 F-250 6.0. About 6 months ago some coolant was found to be coming down the rear of the engine and onto the garage floor but only in the mornings after cooling down and even then not every morning.

A couple weeks ago I did a coolant flush and put the red ELC coolant in and now I can see better where the coolant is coming from. It appears to be coming out from the O-ring between the cooler and the intake manifold. I did check the torque on the stud and bolt and they are tight.

Is there a way the drop the cooler enough to install a new O-ring with out going through the whole process of removing the intake manifold and everything that is associated with that? The thought is daunting...

Ford 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel :: Coolant Leak Under Intake In Front

I just replaced the oil/egr cooler, stand pipes and dummy plugs along with all suggested upgrades, just filled with oil hooked up batteries and while filing with coolant it started gushing out from under the intake in front. I think I see an o-ring pushed out.. I hope I can lift the intake without removing the turbo!!!

Ford 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel :: 2006 F250 - Coolant Leak?

I have a O6 F250. Egr delete and a new oil cooler 20k ago. I have been dealing with missing coolant for about 6 months. A little here or there but it has gotten really bad the last few weeks. My last attempt was to replace the degas cap. Stopped the missing coolant for a 30 mile trip. Just to clarify it had gotten to the point I was adding one gallon per 20 miles. Needless to say I was thrilled. Next morning I came out to find coolant under the truck. Plastic Y under degass, so I replaced it. 25 miles and none missing. Next morning fluid under the truck. Now it's the egr hose.

Replaced it with a gates hose and new clamps. Fill it up with coolant go inside and its leaking in the same location. Its a pure pleasure to undertake. So I assume these leaks weren't previously leaking because the degass cap wasn't pressurizing the system. That being said the leak is on the oil cooler side of the egr hose. The snap lock fitting that was on the original housing spins around. Should that locking mechanism be removed before the hose is secured and clamped? This is the only thing I can come up with as the culprit. I have searched the information on the site but can't find any mention of it needing to be removed. The clamps are the right width and everything is seated.

Ford 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel :: 2005 - Intermittent Lumpy Idle When Hot

My 2005 Excursion, at 198K miles has become more of a 'hangar queen' in that I only use it for big jobs. I've kept it for towing/hauling and making long highway runs with more than 4 people.

The truck, 99.8% of the time, runs super. It pulls like a locomotive and gets decent fuel economy (17 mpg running 75 mph empty). I've got the 'blue spring', EGR delete, ARP headstuds, 4" MBRP, Banks intercooler, and run my SCT tuner all the time on "8000 lb tow".

But...there is this weird intermittent problem. It appears to only happen when it is warmed up and driving around town. Sometimes, when I pull up to a light, with my foot on the brake, the engine will sort of go into a 'lumpy race idle' and you have to clamp down on the brake pedal to keep it from lurching into the guy in front of you. Other times, it just runs rough and idles 'lumpy'. It has only died maybe 2 times when acting up. Often, the symptoms disappear on their own and don't come back. If I turn off the engine and re-start (to keep from scaring people at the bank drive-through) it usually runs fine after restart.

I've got an EDGE CTS monitor so I've been trying to find out from that what is going on. I can't seem to catch the parameter that might tell me. My local 'indy' shop can't find any codes thrown. The truck had new alternator, batteries, and starter motor installed in January this year. These symptoms have been going on for several years. Recently, they seem to occur more often.

I've searched on this site a few times, but with no definite 'hit'. I'll admit that I'm a big out of the jargon. I keep thinking this is related to FICM, but everyone seems to say the FICM would manifest as a cold start problem. I do know the FICM sits right on top of the drivers side valve cover. It has got to get hot.

FICM?
Injectors?
How do I kill this one strange problem?

Ford 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel :: 2005 - Injector Intermittent Code

Been working on a 2005 6.0 with 218kish miles on it. When I got the truck it had a contribution 2 code stored, no check engine light, just could see the code on the code reader.

Truck idled like crap, lacked power, so I replaced the injector. Truck improved but still had a miss, this time it had a stored code of injector 6.

Ordered another injector, got it installed today. Fired the truck up, ran perfectly, drove it around, absolutely 0 issues ran like a dream. Parked it for a few minutes before starting it again to wash it. Rough idle, not horrible, not noticeable. Cylinder 6 contribution code stored again, no check engine light.

So I drove it, I drove the hell out of it for about 15 minutes with the AC at full blast, WOT, etc etc. By the time I was done, truck was back to running smoothly.

Just walked outside after dinner to see if it would still perform well, or if it would idle poorly again, sure enough, 6 contribution, rough idle.

I just changed fuel filters with OEM, air filter is new. I just cleaned the EGR valve- although maybe it's not clean enough?? Oil change is tomorrow (had to wait for the filter to get shipped in).

I'm at a little bit of a loss on how to cure this miss, unless it's possibly an oil pressure issue from bad/old oil causing it?

Ford 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel :: 2006 - Coolant Leak In Front Of Engine?

I have a 06 f250 that has a coolant leak in the front of the engine. It's was leaking about a month ago replaced the water pump it stopped. Then about 2 weeks later it started back up again. It only happens when the engine is cold. But once it warms up it starts leaking again. I am confused as all get out on this.

Ford 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel :: Coolant Leak - EGR Delete Hose Replacement

Had a coolant leak I finally traced to the rubber hose on an egr delete (previous owner installed, not sure of brand). Looks like the jackwagon who installed it cranked the clamps way too tight and they eventually split the hose. I have a piece of heater hose that looks like the right diameter and cut to size should fit fine. I guess I am just looking for some reassurance that it would be ok to use in that situation...

Ford 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel :: Coolant Leak Coming From Harmonic Dampener

I noticed I was a bit low on coolant and started looking around. Found a drip on the serpentine belt and harmonic dampener. The T-stat is dry and was replaced 1.5 yrs ago with a full flush. Both hoses are fine and there is no coolant near the steering assembly.

I am figuring it is coming from the water pump. I am planning to put in that Bulletproof water pump and Mishimoto silicon hoses. Anything else I should consider before I dive in. I'll put a new T-stat on since the coolant is drained and it is cheap $20 insurance. BTW hoses and water pump are original (7/05 build date).

Additional information - no spots on driveway (from coolant anyway) and single drop on the dampener. No mess anywhere else and I am down about 1/2 gallon - degas is almost empty.

Ford 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel :: 2006 E350 - Coolant Reservoir Has Crack / Leak

I bought a 2006 E350 with a 6.0L diesel. Has some issues I hope to work through, or failing that I'll ditch the thing and learn a lesson.

The pressurized coolant reservoir has a crack/leak in it. Is it wise to only replace it, or should I look for a root cause? The temp gauge does not go past 50% pulling hard up a mountain pass.

This was a fleet vehicle that was pretty much abandoned. There is a chance the reservoir was cannibalized for another rig and had the bad part thrown there but I'll never know.

Ford 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel :: Coolant Dripping Under Degas Bottle / Boot Oil Leak

I have coolant leaking from under my degas bottle. There was a spot on the driveway this morning and upon investigation, I saw a drip hanging from the bottom of the degas. No liquid on top at all. Where this is coming from? Bottom hose?

Also, the boot that connects the tube (right side while looking at front of truck) to the elbow that goes into the intake is leaking oil and making a mess. Whats the best way to fix? Remove boot, clean up, and put back on? Or replace boot? If replace, where can I get that boot?
