Ford 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel :: 2004 Truck Randomly Shuts Off While Driving
Jun 19, 2017
04 with 170k miles. truck runs fine. every now and then truck shuts off while driving. turn it off the it restarts every time. Only code that comes up is number 6 injector. The contribution test injector is firing right. FICM voltage is 47.5. has new ipr and hpop also 6k miles ago. Could it be number 6 shorts out or something crazy killing truck? or maybe a crank sensor.

Yesterday, my truck began to shut off abruptly. Under every condition, from idling to slow running (30mph), and 70 mph, to load and no load. Wait 1 minute and it would start and run for 1 minute 15 seconds. If the batteries were disconnected, the truck would run for 13 minutes before shutting off. Have replaced the fuel filters. Still does it, but runs for between 10 and 20 minutes before shutting off.
Am seeing only two errors codes. P1000, and P0603. I was 40 miles into the Ville Vidal, when this started, and 150 miles from home. To get home, I disconnected the batteries too many times to count, and bled the HFCM numerous times. Am also seeing the moisture in fuel icon on teh dash light up when it quits, but so far as I can tell there is no moisture in the separate.
2003 F450 6.0, automatic. 150K miles.

My 2001 F350 7.3 dually diesel Automatic has been a pretty good truck but recently it has been dying. Engine just randomly shuts off without warning while Driving. Check engine light comes on sometimes. Some of the time it will restart if I cycle the key. Once its running again I can rev the engine up without a sputter but after a few hundred yards down the road it will die again. I noticed driving on the highway when it does it my truck will buck first, then...
If I leave it in drive with the key in the run position when it dies and I'm coasting down the highway the Tach starts jumping around like its trying to restart itself, all on its own. I don't have a scanner.
The last time it died I coasted into my driveway and it wouldn't restart, went back out there 30 minutes later and it fired right up. Its only 40 degrees here if that matters, not hot by any means.

My wife was driving through the intersection when the truck died... Tried to start it again but no go, I had it towed home, and stared to troubleshoot.
I have a Scan gauge2 and these were the readings: FMP: 47.5, IPR: 84.71, SYC: 1, ICP: 0
I pulled the IPR (that was only a year old) and the screen was perfect. I had 11.5v at the plug for the IPR, and on the Ohms scale I was reading 1.8Mohms.
I went to the dealer and got a new IPR, and still no start. and the only change in the reading on the scan gauge was the ICP is now reading 56. The gauge on the dash is reading normal oil pressure, but I haven't checked actual Low-end oil pressure.
Last month I replace the HPOP, and 1 faulty injector. Now I thinking wire loom, defective new IPR from the dealership or the new HPOP has failed.

I have a 2006 that shuts off in a hard pull, if I wait 3 minutes it starts again. I hooked up my scan tool and when it dies and I crank it it only builds 200psi oil pressure, let it sit it builds enough pressure to run fine. If I dont push it over 3500psi for more than minute it wont die pull a hill it dies again. Is it the hpop or an o-ring.

My truck is still fairly new with 4,600 miles. I took my family on a camping trip and pulled my trailer which is about 7800 LBS. I made multiple hill climbs and mentioned to my wife how well the truck does on the hills pulling the trailer then a minute later the truck jolts and a "low oil" warning light flashed on the dash. By that time the truck had already shut down and I was coasting to the side of the road. At least I still had the ability to steer until I hit about 2 mph then the truck completely shut down. I could smell burning oil or something similar coming from the engine area.
I knew I had plenty of oil because I had just checked it hours before. I got out and checked it again and was still full. After standing there for several minutes starring at the truck I realized that our big yearly trip up North to the redwoods was over. I tried to start the truck again and it just turned over but wouldn't start. Nothing was smoking or appeared to be leaking. So I started to look for the Ford tow truck number. While looking for the number I tried to start it again and it started! I drove it about 3 minutes down the road to a gas station and called the dealer. They of course said never heard of the issue. Have the truck and trailer towed in to the nearest dealer. Well decided I wasn't going to do it since I was already in the middle of no where and the truck was driving fine. I wasn't going to ruin our big trip over this so I drove it. I figured if something failed at least they could fix it and not tell me they can't duplicate the issue after 3 days. The truck drove fine the rest of the way there.
It happened again coming home. While climbing another hill in the middle of a 2 lane canyon with no shoulder and no cell service. Luckily, I coasted a few hundred yards to the only turn out I saw in a mile stretch. Once, again it showed "Low oil". I let the truck sit for 5 minutes and it started. Drove it another 5 hours home with no issues. I monitored all my gauges during this time none showed over heating. So in summary, truck shows "low oil" warning then shuts down and restarts minutes later. I will be taking it in to the dealer soon but I'm expecting the standard can't duplicate the problem.

I have a 2005 f250 just hit 180k last week and it has the 6.0 in it, egr deleted, sinister diesel oil cooler, stc livewire tuner with street tune installed, air raid air intake. Wicked wheel 2 in the turbo. Its throwing codes P0606 and P0341. Cam sensor has been replaced and the other code is a mystery to me. Its been randomly shutting off like you turned off the ignition all day today.
When it stalls it takes 3-4 times to get it fire back up. When you first go to start it the pressure gauge reads 0 but once it fires up it says theres pressure. Also some of the days it never stalls and runs like a champ but other days i cant drive more the 10 feet and then it stalls. I have no idea whats going on with this truck and ive put lots of money into it doing customization and stuff like that so I am hoping that its not on its last leg....

My friend has a 2004 explorer v6 150k miles. Randomly shuts off while normal driving just going down the road, and when you try to restart it it starts up and runs fine. This used to happen every few months and is getting more frequent. The only code it has is a lean code from the o2 sensor, I'm trying to get more info on that but it's been like that before this problem started and possibly just a bad o2 sensor. Where to start and any know issues that would cause this? Sounds like a wiring issue are there any spots in particular prone to chaffing?

So I am out of town about 120 miles from home on a job. I was driving down the mountain road to the store and my tuck just shut down. Lucky for me I was able to get into a turn out. So I try to start the truck and it will not fire. I check for codes I am getting p2614, p2617 so I was able to clear the codes and get back to the house I am staying in. What is going on with my tuck. Oh ya the code did not come back on in the 15 min drive to the house. Also just finished up doing a y pipe and my egr o ring so I and the intake and all that off.

The first time it happened, I wasn't monitoring any PIDs as I didn't have my phone with me. Not really sure if I hit a bump or anything, it just stalled. I pulled it off to the side and put it in park and started cranking. Turned over rapidly but wouldn't start. I started freaking out thinking what am I going to do? Shut the truck completely off and waited a couple minutes and then turned the key and it started right up. Drove to my destination and didn't have another issue.
I'm only driving my truck on weekends as I have a company van and I can't park my truck at the condo I'm living at right now. So sometimes it's a few weeks between drives. This has been the story of my truck use since I nought it 3 years ago. In fact I know my turbo is sticking as the most boost it builds is 20-22 psi. I probably have a sticking injector too, as it smokes unburnt fuel until warm.
So the last few weeks when driving, I've noticed that if I hit a big bump, occasionally it dies again. What I've discovered is that it won't start unless I shut the key off entirely. Meaning, if it stalls I put it in neutral as I coast, shut the key off as far as it will go and it will start up. If I just throw it in neutral and try to start, it won't.
Watching my Torque Pro display, I've noticed that it locks up (like normal when I shut the truck off w/o shutting the Torque app off). The display then has read lower voltages than normal for FMP, FLP, FVP (main, logic and vehicle? can't remember ). FMP is normally at 48.5v and the other 2 hover around 13.9v. The last time it stalled, I noticed 9.3v for FLP and FMP was 23.4. I'm not sure if this is what it shut off at or if I panicked and tried starting it w/o shutting the key off entirely. So please don't take those readings as gospel.
I scanned it for codes, but nothing popped up.

I have a 06 f350 with 140,000mile and today I was driving to a buddy's house and the truck died on me as I was doing 45mph so I towed it home and check the codes I have 1 low icp pressure and 1 low icp during starting / cranking and 1 ckp out of range I think that how it's worded so I looked at the icp pressure and it's 0 and the desired is around 1000 and the volt is .56 and as far as the ckp the rpm are reading so I don't know what to do about that ? Could the STC fitting and dummy plug and standpipe o rings really go out on me like this ? Or am I missing something? I am also trying to track down a oil pressure gauge for the Icp fitting to check it

I am working on an 2003 F-250 6.0l. The truck just died while driving. No restart. Plugged in my scan tool and I am not getting any High pressure oil. Is there anything other than the Hpop I should be looking at. I know it is a big job to replace the hpop so I don't want to overlook something simple.

I have a 07 6.0 that won't start it died a few weeks ago while driving. Being a mechanic I've done numerous things to the truck in order to fix all the common 6.0 problems but can't figure this one out. It will crank and get oil pressure and fuel pressure but seems to not be getting fuel. The IPR valve isn't clogged I tried with 2 working valves nothing worked. Along with changing the ficm. The connections to the ficm are clean and all in tact. I have an edge evolution chip that isn't even showing any codes. Not sure what to try next since I don't have any codes to go off of.

So a few day ago my truck shut down while driving. I posted up and checked the ficm harness as suggested. Things were a bit lose so I zip tied my harness around the ficm. Thought it was all fixed and test drove it and it shut down again. I tried to start it a few times and my ICP was a tad low about 450 ,I have a brand new ICP and harness. Checked my scan gauge and I have code p2614. I cleared the codes and the truck started right up. I need to get this sorted out I was supposed bro go home tomorrow from working out of town all week about 100 miles from home...

I have a 2004 6.0 that has been pissing me off to no end lately. I has a random dying/no start problem. If it idles for ten minutes, it'll die sometimes. And if I drive it and shut it off, it won't restart sometimes. I just drove it three hours on Friday, shut it off and it restarted immediately. Drove it around town all weekend and it started fine every time.
Now driving it home and stopped for fuel 45 minutes in, and it won't start. I have all sensor readings in spec except for I have no ficm sync while cranking. I have about 5k miles on new hpop, injectors, ipr valve, icp sensor, oil rail rebuilds, stand pipes, ficm and engine harness and injector harness. No codes either. If it sits for a couple hours it'll start fine. I've wiggled as many wires as I can and it still won't start. I have rpm while cranking on my edge too. Don't know if that would rule out crank sensor or cam sensor.

I think my starter took a s hit like I said truck randomly doesn't crank all lights on dash come on can hear injectors buzzing turn key nothing. Took wire off passenger's side of truck yellow wire touched to pos post solenoid click no crank. So I had the old lady sit in the drivers seat well I hit the starter with my BMFH started right up could something else cause this or should I just bite the bullet and replace the starter?

Headed to town with the kids and my truck shuts off going down highway. I pull over and start it back up and make it to 30mph and shuts off again. This time it will not start. I have 1/4 tank of fuel, I first thought it maybe the issue inside the tank causing it to shut off. I get some diesel pour it in and it fires up for about 15 secs and shuts off. I pull the fuel filter, making sure o have fuel in the bowl. Start it up and it runs for about 10 sec. I then swap out the CPS. Same thing, runs about 20 and cuts off. I then call AAA because I am tired and ready to go home. I have it towed to my buddy's shop. He has not looked at it yet.

A little background, this is an 04, f-350. It sis not start a week ago so I charged the batteries and it started, started fine this morning, (had not driven it for the week) Drove it to work, 35 miles, parked it, and it will not start.
I downloaded Torque and got a few numbers,
HPOP 1900 FMP 48V (repaired last summer) and FVP 11.5V.
Ran out of battery to surf more and look, so I am trying to figure out the app, and the issue with the truck. It seems to turn over good, until I ran the battery down, and the GP cycles normally, and the injector buzz seems good. Temp is in the 50's...

Last friday, my truck died while running. I let it sit for a few hours, went out and it started right up. Went to get pizza for my kids and I got 5 blocks from my house and I barely had any power. Truck died again while getting pizza and had to tow it home. Now it will not start. I have checked fuses, taken apart the fuel pump on the motor and cleaned the water from it, added a fuel treatment and also did an old truckers trick with the fuel (10% gasoline). the truck will crank and make an attempt to fire but it will not start. I have 3 kids and this is my ONLY transportation. I need to get this thing running STAT.
