I recently was informed by my local mechanic that fuel was leaking into my coolant. He said I had a cracked head based on this and it would give soon. Well, he was right, and now I need to do a head job. I found new heads, but would like to know how many book hours this should take before I proceed. He gives me a wide range of time, and don't want to get taken advantage of.
View 4 RepliesI spotted a leak last nite on my 6.0. It is coolant, running down the right rear on 2 metal lines that go to the trans I think. It was dark and 24 degrees so I did not spend too much time looking. Shut the mother down til I could research. 2004 250, 6.0 FX4x4, stock. Coolant was changed to green by previous owner. Bought it 4 months ago. 187,000 miles.....

On our '04 Ex with 195 on the clock I've discovered a pretty good leak dripping. I crawled under it an coolant appears to be dripping off the back of both exhaust manifolds.
Less than 1000 miles ago we had an oil cooler and egr was pulled and freeze plugs installed by an excellent well respected 6.0 diesel shop. I don't think both gaskets could have blown at the same time creating two leaks. It runs fine, degas bottle still has coolant in it.
I've seen other threads that point to the heater core hose and more commonly the "orange" egr hose. It appears that an egr delete removes the hose - I think... but would that Blue / orange hose be there if the cooler was just capped and electrical unplugged?
The shop is going to look at it Monday but I'm trying to understand it better ahead of time.

Just noticed yesterday during an oil change that I had white stuff around the coolant cap on the overflow bottle and that no coolant was visible. I went and got some antifreeze premix to top it off and it only took around 1 quart. Today after driving it approx 30 miles, the coolant was again missing.
When I changed the oil the other that same day there was no coolant in it, and I don't have any puddles on the ground. Whats going on?
EGR is deleted with a sinister kit, temps are fine, today it was 94 degrees and the truck was running at 194 oil 192 Coolant when getting off the highway after 15 minutes doing ~75. I've got a little bit of stiction going on but besides that nothing seems wrong.
I LOVE my Super Duty and with only 15k on it (have a company truck) plan on keeping it for a long time. I've had an EGR Delete and new Oil Cooler along with some misc things done to the engine and turbo, about 6g's worth. Now my mechanic at NCB is telling me that the reason I'm loosing coolant is that my head gaskets are leaking. I'm looking at another 5-7 grand which is a no go for me. I'm thinking of doing the work myself, especially since I've seen where i don't have to remove the body to do it.
Okay, here is the question, I've been having a hard time finding a comprehensive list of the parts I should be getting to do the job. Looking for a list or link on what I need to do it correctly and anything I might want to do while my engine is apart so I don't have to do this again?
I have a 2012 with 41k miles on it. I noticed it was leaking oil from the front of the motor. So...I checked the oil and found it to be over full. Assuming I overfilled when I changed the oil (2000 miles ago) I changed the oil again and made certain it was filled properly, 13 qts right in the middle of the dip stick. The oil leak stops. 1000 miles later the oil leak starts again. Too much oil again and the coolant is mysteriously low!!! The dealer can get me in two weeks from now.
Time to get the 7.3 back on the road, I knew I kept the old girl for a reason. 262k of miles no truck should endure and still going strong. I was 21 when I bought the 7.3 (16 years ago) and beat the crap out of it. This truck has been pampered compared to my past trucks. I was hoping to get 14 years out of this truck too.
Is the motor OK after having coolant sloshing around in there? I just hope ford stands behind this one. I have a feeling it's not an easy fix. I am sure glad I left everything stock.
Last week I noticed I was having to refill coolant in my excursion more than I should. I hae a mechanic friend now trying to diagnose the problem. he said he doesnt think its the water pump and there's no white smoke. Are there common leaking places for the coolant on 6.0s he should be looking for?
View 4 RepliesI've just finished a marathon replacing the y-pipe, and doing the IPR screen. I had many seized/stripped bolts to contend with. 2 I had to cut off in the most awkward places.. Anyways, it all came together and completed the project late tonight...
Befoer even starting the truck I noticed coolant dripping from passenger side manifold/block heater area.. I obviously must have damaged something in my reefing on turbo to get it lined up with exhaust pipes, etc...
I cannot see the source of the leak, but it seems wet above the block heater, but pools there then drips.. I'm curious where to look. Could I have damaged the EGR cooler and its coming from there? At the manifold joint closest to the back, is there coolant flowing there? I am pretty frustrated, because after going through a day like to day, ripping my arms to shreds, straining for 12 hours straight, then having yet another issue to figure out...
Also this is as best as I could get the y-pipe to meet the turbo... slight gap at bottom.
On Friday am I noticed a 6" sized puddle on the garage floor. Coolant leak on the drivers side coming off the frame. Dropped it off at the dealer on Sunday and today the tech tells me it was in fact a radiator leak and the new one will be here wed. They hope to have it buttoned late Wednesday. I am assuming all will be covered under warranty.
I have 23k miles logged and had just got home from a 1300 mile run pulling about 18k worth of hay and trailer. Truck performed flawlessly. Averaged 11mpg for the trip. I am hoping this is the first and last radiator replacement I have to go thru.
I recently had my injectors changed at Ford and while I was driving it started dumping coolant. If the leak can be cause from the injector replacement or if they didn't put something back together right... 2005 f 350 6.0...
View 14 RepliesMy friend has an F450 with the 6.0, and discovered fuel in his coolant. I have the 7.3 in my truck, and know next to nothing about the 6.0. Can bad Injector sleeves cause this ? Is that the same as "seats" ? I am not up on my terminology. He thinks he needs new heads for his truck, but I don't agree.
View 6 RepliesCouple of years ago I installed a fuel pressure gauge. I wrapped the fittings with teflon tape. Well within about a year it started leaking. So I shopped around and used Permatex Permashield fuel resistant sealant on the fittings. It says diesel resistant on the package. Couple months later leaking again. So I take it apart again, clean every fitting and follow the instructions to the letter. Well its leaking again. What will resist diesel fuel under 55 psi pressure. All the fittings seem to be pipe thread.

If there is indeed diesel fuel in my coolant, what is the most common cause of this problem? Truck has low power when towing 8 tons.
I've replaced water pump due to truck overheating and blowing off radiator cap during first hard tow up steep hill.
Replaced all radiator/heater/coolant hoses.
Replaced radiator.
I've also flushed the cooling system 5+ times now with coolant flush and distilled water. Each time, less and less evidence of brown-colored stop leak.
The stop leak looked like diarrhea, slightly chunky. After the third flush, stop leak in coolant lessened.
HOWEVER -- 4th/5th flush of coolant each still looked like brown milk. Coolant has a strange chemical smell, possibly diesel fuel.
I am scheduled to leave on a trip in the morning. I have installed an 85 gallon in bed auxillary fuel tank. I plumbed it in as per the instructions and the same as the last two I had in other trucks. After install I pumped 25 gallons in the aux to see how it worked. Every thing worked right. So yesterday I filled both tanks to the top and left the shutoff between them open.
This morning I noticed a puddle of diesel on the shop floor. Wiped it up and left for the golf course. Got home and found another puddle. I have closed the shut-off valve but it still seems to be leaking. It is not the plumbing I installed. It's hard to tell because I have a protector around the tank but it seems the leak is coming from the top. I just took a short run down the highway and reparked it. I have a can't miss appointment so when I get back I'll see how much has leaked.
Is there some kind of overflow on top the tank? Everything is dry where the aux tank is plumbed in and the air pipe seems to be fine. If the leak stops with the shutoff closed then I'm just gonna head out but if not then I'm gonna take down the shield and see what I can find, but I'd sure rather not.
I have a 2011 in the shop for a fuel leak. Truck has 208,000 miles on it. Leaking fuel into the valley. I took the upper and lower intake off and cleaned all the fuel up so I could see and with the key on there is fuel coming out from the bottom of the CP4 area where it mounts to the front cover. Looks like there is an o-ring between the front cover and the CP4 but wouldn't that o-ring be for sealing oil and not fuel? I'm confused as to how this works. Truck runs great with no check engine light. It's not a fast leak but a drip drip drip from the bottom of the engine once it fills up the valley enough to run off the back of the engine.
View 14 RepliesFor the last four months my 04 F350 has been having the same problem every now and then. Cruising down the highway at a decent speed and the fuel pedal/fuel shuts off. Only lasts seconds then re-engages. Two lights come on. Low fuel and water in fuel. I changed the internal fuel pump last week and it did it again tonight. The truck runs great otherwise except for an occasional death shake while stopped at a light. No codes came up and FICM is at 54.
View 14 RepliesI am going to install a coolant filter on my 2004 6.0 E350 van. I have read threads about bypass filters and full flow filters and I started asking myself "Why use a bypass when I can filter all of the coolant?"
Is there any reason why someone should use a bypass filter? I bought the van used knowing I would eventually have to do most if not all of the 6.0 repairs. IPR sells a complete coolant filter.
I talked with the people at FICM repair and they suggested I do my research but leaned towards the IPR cooler. Ed spent a good 30 minutes on the phone answering all my questions and never asked if I wanted to buy anything. If anything, he was trying to stop me from throwing money at the van until I isolated what needs to be repaired.
I already bought the Sinister Kit and requested a return.
My 2004 Excursion 6.0 4x4 is leaking oil around the gaskets. Does this usually just call for replacing the gaskets and is there anything that needs to be checked or upgraded while the engine is out? It looks like the engine needs to be taken totally out although I have heard it just has to be lifted a little.
View 14 RepliesI have an 04 f-350 that I did an EGR delete, new Ford oil cooler, new radiator (not ford), new thermostat (not ford), coolant filter, glow plugs and harness, MBRP theoretical 4in downpipe (was 3.5 to converter) flushed cooling system with lots of tap water before the delete, replaced coolant with Cat 1 ELC and distilled water, fresh T6 5W-40 and filter, several weeks ago. Was troubleshooting a wireing problem and found what looks like oil sludge in the degass bottle while under the hood.
Possible that while doing EGR delete I clipped a gasket? Truck runs great, no smoke out the tail pipe. There is what looks like about a cup floating on top the coolant. Oil level is down about a 1/2 quart and clean, no water in it. Where do I start looking?
I just did a pressure check on the cooling system on my 04 6 liter. It reached 16lbs towing an enclosed trailer and into a strong head wind. I was just wondering what's the Normal pressure suppose to be, or is there a Normal pressure. I'm using the new style cap with the larger spring in it and it didn't kick any coolant out.
