Ford 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel :: 2003 - Delayed Acceleration / Black Smoke Will Come Out Of Tail Pipe
Jul 16, 2016
After running perfectly fine all day my truck will seem to bog down and when I press the accelerator the reaction is extremely delayed and tons of black smoke will come out of the tail pipe before the truck actually gains power and takes off. The check engine light has been coming on but will turn itself off after the truck has been shutdown a few times....

Truck started running rough on way home the other day. First gave me P0404 code and would get black smoke along with whitish smoke coming from the tail pipe. I haven't been able to notice or track an amount of coolant loss yet.
Swapped EGR valve this morning and now noticed this once she kicked into high idle (still warming up). About to hook up the IDS, hoping I this is not head gasket .

Ok I'm working on a 2000 7.3 on a F550 truck was running but had no power so we changed out all the injectors and glow plugs and rebuilt the turbo now there is no start it turns over and were getting black smoke from the tail pipe. What is going on with it?

I recently installed a Banks Ram Air Intake on my stock 1999.5 powerstroke and wow did it ever wake up the turbo. A few weeks later i installed a Flo-Pro 5" stainless exhaust from turbo back with no muffler. The truck is running better than it has in years and with 272000 miles, I am pleased with the results. HOWEVER, I have since noticed a little black sticky soot coming out of the tail pipe, a bit of vapor (no oil spitting) from the oil filler tube with the lid off, and now my dip stick tube where it enters the oil pan is leaking. What is going on , or am I now chasing and fixing week points on this truck?

Have a lot more smoke from the tail pipe when they are running their tow tune vs their street tune? For me it seems like a lot especially right now being cold out but I still notice a haze at idle when the engine is warm. Also can smell a difference.
Getting a ficm tuner from php tomorrow so interested to see what that does for things.

I try to turn on my truck today and it will not crank. The day before I had change two injectors and I turned on the truck when two fill up my tank and I put a full bottle of injector cleaner with it. When I drove off, a few blocks down the truck turn off on me. I started to turn on the truck and every time I did it would blow heavy white smoke out the tail pipe and then it would shut off. I did this about 10 times until I decide to call a tow truck. The next day I empty out the fuel tank and fill it with diesel only. I tried to turn on the truck and it would not crank. I ended putting two new batteries and still the same result. What can this be ? 2007 6.0 Diesel ...

My truck has been having this issue pretty much since I have had it, but it seems to be getting worse, or so I think.
When the truck is cold, it does not want to move very well. Like it's missing, and it does this until it gets warmer. Also, I have puffs of blue smoke come out the tailpipe when this occurs with it cold.
Injectors? Injector o-rings? Stiction?
FICM volts are good at 46.5v-48v when cranking.

I would I have a 01 7.3 e350 with 111k miles. I drove the van a couple of days ago.it sat for 2 days and now it wont go past 30mph.the van shakes crazy and went when i hit the petal no power with smoke coming out the tail pipe sometimes. When I shut the van off and restart it to drive it,it sounds better. I changed the fuel filter with motorcraft and changed the oil. Here is the kicker. It ran good after I changed the fuel filter the whole day and now its 4th of july and I went to get some drinks and it happened again.

I just came back from a 200 mile trip and parked my truck. Next day, got in the truck and turned the key.... it turned over and white smoke coming out the tail pipe. After doing some research(you tube),I ruled out cps sensor because it was showing low rpms on tach. Replaced glow plug relay and still have same issue.. what else to look at that I can do without getting it towed. Hunting season coming soon and I need the beast.

I recently purchased a 2011 F350 chassis cab with no bed installed. Have a few questions regarding the exhaust system. When I inspected and drove it noticed some black smoke when under hard acceleration, nothing major though. Other that that the truck drove great. Have not got the truck home yet, a friend is going to pick it up and deliver it in a few days. Based on the visible smoke I was suspicious of the exhaust system but I have no knowledge of what the system is suppose to look like. My experience with diesels and for that matter gas engines is mostly from the days of mechanical fuel injected diesels (70's era farm tractors mostly) and carberated gas engines.
My friend stopped by a local Ford dealer and crawled around under a new 2015 Chassis cab to look and compare to this 2011. It appears that the SCR and DPF are not installed on this truck. Where they would normally be is a section of pipe with a section about 2 feet long that is 6 or 8 inches in diameter. Looking at some threads on this site I'm guessing this is a muffler that has been added since the truck is not loud. There is no DEF tank and all the wiring for sensors that would be attached to the exhaust system appear to be tied off to the frame and not connected to anything. The dealer didn't know the history beyond he purchased it on an auto auction and he installed a new rear end in it. Car Fax shows nothing of concern.
My question is should I now be concerned since have determined much of the exhaust system has been removed? I've read some threads and it appears that the only way this can be done and have the engine run well without any codes etc is if the removal is done with some sort of tune. Is there any way to determine who has done the tune? Will it be an issue when take to a Ford dealer for service?
I know if wanted to put the system back to stock would be large dollars, as long as the system runs well and is reliable I will be happy. The anticipated use of the truck will be to pull gooseneck trailer and will probably not see more than 1000 miles a year towing and 5 to 10k total in a year. I drive with a very light foot seldom ever pressing any vehicle to its limits. If still have the truck in 10 years when retire or at least cut back on my work then it may see more miles.

I recently purchased a 87ford escort and I think it may have been sitting for a while but it runs Problem is it jumps rattles shakes while idling same thing when driving but not as bad. I'm hoping it is just in need of tune up but it continues to blow out black smoke from tail pipe, getting oil changed today. Do you think the smoke could mean the rings are bad? Also some times it takes awhile before the car shifts when I am driving till it gets warm.

My buddy install a BPD air/oil oil cooler in his 2003 F250 last week and now there is coolant pouring out the tail pipe. I haven't seen it but he tells me there is quite a bit coming out. It wasn't doing this before we installed the BPD oil cooler. Normally I would say bad EGR cooler but his EGR is deleted. This is the 3rd BPD cooler I've put in and this is the first time I've had any issues after the install. The install went smooth other than we broke the radiator and had to install a new one. I feel bad cause I'm hoping it wasn't something I caused but I just can't think of anything I did during this install that would cause coolant to be getting into the exhaust. He just had it towed to the local Ford dealership.

Well my problem went from bad to worse. My 05 started running rough at idle, then smoothed out a bit but started smoking on acceleration a little. At this point it felt like it had more power than ever before and even ran smoother running up to 3k RPM before shifting (manual transmission). But now it's smoking so bad, I can't really drive it. It's smoking white or gray at idle but blowing black smoke on acceleration. I had a cylinder 5 contribution code but with the amount of smoke it's hard to believe only one injector is a problem. I pulled the EGR valve and it doesn't look stuck open but I'm going to replace it anyway.

Yesterday my car ran fine. Today it started running rough when my wife drove it. When I started it to see what was going on it ran very rough. I gave it a little gas and black smoke came out of the tail pipe and now it will not start. I can hear the fuel pump running when I turn the car on. I have spare at least at the coil pack to the wires. The check engine light is on but I don't have a tool to read it and I can't start it to go get it read.

There's a black form around the end of my minivan tail pipe. This form is created by smoke, I can have it on my finger if I touch it (like BBQ ashes), is this normal or my minivan running rich? I don't see any black smoke coming out of the tail pipe as it is driving.

Was hauling a bobcat this AM and noticed something odd in my rear view. Under steady accelleration (either light or heavy foot pedal pressure - steady either way), the exhaust would puff out sporadic extreme dark clouds of smoke. The puffs weren't fast like every cylinder rotation.. but every second or so.. puff of very thick black smoke mixed in with the expected black smoke we see.
Truck has 350k miles with regular oil changes. Year ago someone hooked the injectors up to the computer software (buzz test) and all of them checked out to be in very good condition.
The same tech pointed out some dark blowby at the uppipe on the back of the engine. Other than that the truck is in pretty good condition for its age. What could the sporadic very thick/dark puffs of black smoke indicate?

My truck is an 03 and I changed number 5 injector and number 4 injector, checked my ficm everything is good there now I have a contribution balance code for injector 4 now injector 5 and an EGR code some guys on hear before said it could be a sensor but today I talked to my mail man who also owns a 6.0 and he sounds pretty knowledgeable he says it's possible that it could be that the computer is not reading out right and those cylinders are getting to much fuel for an instant that's what's causing the sudden puffs of black smoke. My torque pro is giving me all these codes and I'm starting to think that there is something underlying....

I have a 2003 with 150k miles. My 6.0 has black smoke and can barely crawl up a hill. Dealership is 30 days out for an appt. Air filter, oil change, alternator, and batteries are new. I removed the EGR valve and cleaned, but the valve seat is not perfect. I can see 20 to 30 mil gap around half of the seat. Is this ok or will that little gap cause this?
Hoses all look good. No alarm lights. I have no diagnostic tool but I can use a meter well. It did have an airbag light but I found the fuse missing and replaced it. The air filter alarm switch fell apart but I bypassed it till I get new part. No alarm lights now.

I have a 2003 Ford Excursion with the 6.0 diesel. Just driving the truck today and it was putting out black smoke. What could be causing it? No tuner on my truck, just a 4 inch straight pipe and a k&n air intake (bullet proofed, but thats not for performance) ....
