View 3 RepliesMy brother in law has a 93 explorer which developed a serious transmission leak and had to be towed home. We suspected a blown front seal, which we replaced. We also replaced the transmission filter and pan gasket. When we started it up, it seemed like it was stuck in gear and wanted to move forward no matter what gear it was set to. Even wanted to go in park and neutral. We topped off the fluid, and finally got park to work, but all other gears including reverse want to go forward and it seems as though it is not shifting at all. Could we have forgotten a connection of some sort, of could something internal been damaged when the fluid was lost?
View 6 RepliesGot a call from my little sister about two weeks ago that her Ford Explorer would not drive forward. Checked it out and put it into second to get it home.Last weekend me and my dad changed the filter and fluid and then drove it for a bit. It sounded a little better but still would go into drive or reverse. We shifted into second which we knew worked and then back into reverse immediately and now reverse worked, although sluggish. The same was true for drive. A few days later dad changed a solenoid and now it will go into drive and go up to 15mph, but will not shift from first to overdrive first. And still no reverse right away. She is able to get to school with second gear and pop into drive when she gets up to 40-45mph. If she has to backup from start, first she has to put it into second and then back to reverse. Something in overdrive doesn't seem to be doing its job right.
View 3 RepliesI was pulling into my driveway. I put the car in park, but when i went to get out of the car, it started to roll forward. When I finally got it stopped, I tried to shift it, and it wouldn't shift to any spot. Then it became stuck in between Park and Reverse. I can't move the gear shift.
View 1 RepliesIt is a 2003 xlt 4.6 auto. sometimes, but not too often, when you shift from park to reverse nothing happens, no go backward.... even if you mash the go pedal. if you shift to drive then back to reverse it works fine. Not predictable enough to show it in failed mode to the mechanic. Is this a common simple fix? would this issue throw a code? (No blinking or idiot lights on dash when it does this) is there something I can tell the tranny guys to look at since it is on my dime? Somthing like a shift solenoid or something...
View 2 RepliesMy car is taking a long time shifting from reverse to drive in the morning. Do you know what may be causing it and how to fix it. It's a 1995 automatic ford explorer.
View 3 RepliesI bought a 2010 V8 Explorer on Monday and aside from the apparent "known issue" with the hard 2-1 shift (which I'm trying to get it to "unlearn" by driving differently), it's a really nice truck.
When I shift into reverse it says "Park Aid On/Off" in the display, and sure enough, it beeps when I get close to something. That said, there aren't the normal "dots" in the bumper that I normally associate with backup sensors.
Everything works just fine with it, I just am a guy who likes to know how things work and I don't see anything on the outside that would indicate it's a parking sensor.
I am trying to track down where exactly a clunk is coming from on a 2003 Explorer 4x4(auto, hi, low). My buddy brought it by my house yesterday and i cannot pin point it. If you put the truck in reverse, once you hit the gas, it clunks pretty loud. If you just put it in reverse, let off the brake, it will not do it until you hit the gas.
I got the explorer up in the air and crawled under it. I had my buddy switch from forward to reverse, and back again. Every time he let off the brake in forward or reverse, it would clunk. The reverse clunk was definitely louder.
It does the clunks in all settings, -auto,hi,low. No flashing dash lights. The dash lights do come on accordingly. One thing he pointed out was the Auto,HI,Low Buttons themselves are not backlit anymore. Not sure if that has anything to do with it?
I cannot narrow it down as the whole transfer case, front driveshaft and front diff, shake with the clunk. U joints don't seem to have play (prying with small prybar). I then went ahead and unplugged the big wire connector at the transfer case and the clunk went away.
I'm under the understanding that my 03 explorer AWD tranny level can't be checked. Is this true. Well anyway , went on a 1000 mile round trip. Left for work following morning and truck wouldn't shift to 2nd without letting off the gas. OD lite was flashing. Got to work. Left work and goes into 2nd fine but now it wont hit 3rd till I let off the gas. No OD lite flashing but now check engine lite is on. Watzz up. I would like to check the fluid....but see above.
View 2 RepliesI am using my son's truck this week, 2012 F250, 120,000 miles or so. I left it running in the drive while I got something from inside the house. Guess it was idling approximately 10 minutes. When I put it in reverse the transmission would not shift and the truck didn't move. I killed it, re-cranked it and it went in reverse.
As I was driving down the road the transmission would change gears up and down for no reason. I stopped the truck, and put it in park. I would put it in drive and the transmission sounded like it wanted to slip. I put it back in park and the transmission would not engage. I then killed the truck, re-cranked it, and it drove fine for awhile and started doing it again,
I kill the truck, re-crank it, and we go down the road.
He has a 2002 Explorer 4.6. The truck is having a hard time going into reverse intermittently, hard shift in normal driving and thinks it has slipped in first gear going up his driveway that is steep. He is worried that he put slightly over sized tires and this may hurt his tranny. The overdrive has blinked twice with in the year. Possible problems that could create this he is thinking solenoid pack, servos, torque converter. The truck has 110k and never done fluids, Would lucas slip fix or hurt we have heard that these tranny's are finicy.
View 1 RepliesFinished my flush, but now it won't shift to reverse unless i shift all the way to drive first. I thought it might be the hard shifting lever(i think something is up with the linkage), so i shifted to neutral, then reverse, but no success. It's still about 1/4-1/2" overfilled, I jsut ran to the hardware store and it's consistently still not shifting to reverse unless I take it all the way to drive first.
Really hoping I didn't break something in the process... I did do the shifting through the gears while it was flushing out the old coolant, could the valve be stuck due to that?
I have 2001 F-150 2wd w/v6 and OD automatic. All of a sudden I have no reverse and while in od will not shift into od. If I turn off od it shifts fine but still have no reverse. I want my truck back!!!
View 4 RepliesIt is a 2003 Excursion with V10, 4WD. When I start up and shift to reverse, the gear selector shows it moving, but the truck will not move. It just sits there and revs up. I have to shift back to park and then to reverse again, then you can feel the transmission dropping into reverse. It doesn't do this all the time. There is no pattern to it, just whenever the transmission feels like messing with me.
View 1 RepliesI gave my daughter the '01 sport trac as her first car... just had to do: fan and clutch, ps pump, ac compressor pulleys, a/c line, actuator...
Now the reverse lights have gone out. Bulbs and sockets appear just fine... did notice shift indicator on dash is off just a bit... it reverses just fine....
Is there a linkage adjustment or some switch that is bad?
Fuse #27 keeps blowing as soon as I shift into reverse.
Prior to shifting, everything works as it should - I've unplugged the rear sensors, back up lights, trailer plug, and each time, fuse #27 keeps blowing.....
Where I should look? Also - looking for a 2003 excursion wiring diagram that shows what all fuse#27 controls?
What would cause the reverse sensing system to illuminate the "OFF" light on its own when I shift into reverse? I cannot turn it back on unless I shift out of reverse. This problem has come and gone on its own several times and there is no rhyme or reason as to when or why.
View 11 RepliesI've got a 1994 F-150 with the 4.9 straight six. The transmission is the E40D.
In drive, it shifts silky smooth. In reverse, it acts like it's bogging down the engine.
I only recently got the truck. It's had a fluid and filter change, and is full on the stick when hot.
I didn't notice this problem until I replaced the engine thermostat. It was stuck open, so I replaced it with a 195 degree Stant unit.
Should I let the engine control computer re-learn this engine? I've fixed bad vacuum lines, too.
I've heard tales about the electronic transmissions. This one has 145K on it.
As soon as I put my truck in reverse, the alarm goes off even if nothing is near me. This just started a few days ago/
View 4 RepliesI have a 04 Explorer 4.0 4x4 with 130,000 mi. It all started about 3 months ago. The truck would neutral out while driving. After changing tranny fluid and filter, along with rear speed sensor the problem returned after driving 3-4 miles. After digging deeper I found the transfer case was bone dry and fried inside. Replaced the TC and check fluid level again. Back out of garage and drove the vehicle approx. 2 miles. Stopped to grab a coffee and left truck running. Returned to find I had no reverse or drive. This is after driving it to where I was. Towed truck back home.
I noticed the vehicle would start in gear. Replaced neutral safety switch ( grooves properly aligned ). Started truck, reverse lights come on when in reverse.. The problem now is when I put vehicle into R,N,D,3,2,1, the truck does one thing... REVERSE. All gears put truck into reverse, no forward movement at all. I attempted to replace safety switch a couple of weeks ago but was unable to remove the nut holding the lever on. 2 days I spent on that nut. Now I'm wondering if I did something inside the tranny when I was wrenching on that nut for 2 days?
I have a 2000 Ford Explorer XLT 4x4, powered by the 4.0L SOHC V6 engine, with a 5R55E transmission. It now has this issue of stalling and dying when shifted from park to reverse. This can be prevented by applying the gas immediately after shifting, however, my wife cannot do this. (she is very temperamental, and doesn't remember that this issue occurs decently often now, so if it happens once, she bites my head off because I haven't fixed this issue yet) I do not see this as the valve body issue, because the tranny shifts fine, and I have engine braking ability, still. What causes this, and what I can do to fix it?
