I just bought 2004 Elantra GLS with 64 000 miles on it. Great small car. Suddenly when I parked the car I felt smell of burned plastic from engine compartment. I checked,no smoke just smell. Also,when I drive and press the breaks the car slows down fine after I release the brake pedal and just before to stop I can feel small pushes. What is happening.
View 2 RepliesI recently purchased a 2005 Elantra GLS. It is super clean and runs great. The dealer replaced the original radiator and hoses because they said the original radiator had a hole in it. After driving the car, the engine compartment has a coolant smell. No smell in the cabin. I looked everywhere but don't see any signs of a leak. There is no smoke coming from the exhaust and the oil is clean. Coolant levels in the over flow tank and radiator are good. The car is only driven short distances (maybe 100 miles per week). What could be causing the coolant smell in the engine compartment?
View 5 RepliesRecently purchased a CPO 2009 F250SD 6.4L. Happy with the truck overall but this AM I noticed a slight burning plastic smell so I opened the hood and looked around closely. Didn't really find the culprit(I don't think) but noticed that the engine compartment heat shield/barrier appears to be falling down above and behind the turbos (pictures linked below). How big a deal is this? Would it be covered under the CPO warranty? It almost seems like a safety issue. I also wonder if the insulation material, now exposed without the metal reflector material, is what is causing the smell....
View 14 RepliesI hear a bit of exhaust leak noise from engine compartment only at a cold startup, it goes away in seconds. I am 700miles from home. If it's a nonessential fix i will drive home before fixing, or, if an easy gasket replacement, I have two more days here, and tools,garage, and competent support to diy the job.
View 4 RepliesI had the fuel pressure sensor recall done recently, and I got the car back with 2 plastic pins missing from the engine compartment covers.
Car went in with all of the pins in place. No big deal, I have a bag of pins and I can replace them.
But then I wonder, if they're careless about small things like pins, are they putting my engine back together with all the bolts and screws???
My dad once told me a story about a coworker who used to work the Ford assembly line. They would sometimes put in 3 bolts where 4 were required.
One day, if my engine fails, it may be hard to prove the dealership was the cause.
I have an 01 GTI GLX with climatronic, and I've noticed this hot plastic or hot wire smell in the vents. Yes the fan wire gets hot when the car is hot and AC is on. But I don't think that's it. I've torn the passenger side apart, took the blower motor out, not it. The vent / recirculate motor is external to the vents, the only other place is behind the radio for the other one. What else is internal, if anything, that could be causing this smell? I'm concerned that something will melt or burn up.
I've been wondering if the ecm in the cowl would be getting hot but I can't smell anything with the plastics on. I would say it does seem to occur after driving for about ten minutes in town. But it also seems like it's there when I first start it up also.
Alright, my dad taken it to a mechanic, and guess what, it's still there. Only happens when the engine's warmed up. This is pretty much all I know, but it comes in through the a.c. and seems to come out of the engine compartment on the passengers side.
View 6 RepliesWhere do I start. I have a 2001 Nissan Sentra. 128,000 miles. In Aug. of last year, the engine detonated, so I had it replaced along with other parts. Shortly after that, I noticed a burning plastic smell coming from the car after driving it for a while. I confirmed that that the smell wasn't coming from a plastic bag. Fast forward to Dec 2011, my check engine light comes on. I go to Autozone, have the code read; it's the dreaded 420 code. I go to have it checked out, was told my cat went bad and probably because of the old engine and that the smell is probably coming from that.
The check engine light went off on Christmas day. Fast forward to last month, the light comes on again and I pony up the cash to have the cat replaced since inspection is coming up in June. Now, I had an engine diagnostic run right before I got the cat replaced and it came up fine. The cat was replaced on 4/20. Everything seemed fine. The burning plastic smell went a way, but lo and behold, it came back this week. I don't know what to do. I did a little search on the net and it seems that burning plastic smell indicates there is something going on with engine and possible misfire.
I bought a 2011 VW golf TDI back in August. I current have 12,000 miles. I got my 10k oil change at the beginning of Dec. I ask them to look at the injector recall as well. Everything seem good so far. Until today..... I was out with my girl today getting the rest of our Xmas shopping done. As we were waiting for the light to change the car started surging. Not like a sensor surging but a little surging. I thought it was doing just its thing and it would stop. We pulled in to where we shop and did our thing and headed back out.
Again it started to surge. 5 mins later we pulled into our driveway and started to smell a bad odor coming from the engine compartment. Really bad that she could smell it from inside her side of the car. I can't describe the smell. Maybe electrical not sure. We let it cool down and now I'm about to check out. I have to go to work tomorrow and I'm not if I should drive it or not. I drive 158 miles a day for work.

Occasionally I get blue smoke in the engine compartment with a sweet smell after a long drive. No malfunction lights, oil, brake, coolant, power steering fluids all are normal level. VW service doesn't have a clue, says just drive it until it breaks down. He also informed I should never use Tiptronic for braking since it could damage the transmission(we live in the mountains). What is it for anyway? We use Mobil 1 synthetic oil, and it is not overfilled. Car has 120k miles.
View 5 RepliesAcquired a 1997 Subaru Legacy a few weeks ago. Drive it for a prolonged time in the heat, at speed, and you can smell warm coolant from the engine compartment. And the temperature gauge hovers in the middle of the dial, no matter what.
My wife explained the smell away by guessing she'd spilled coolant when she topped it up. But it's been weeks since she did that. Also - this sucker drinks coolant. I'm guessing every 2-3 days I'm adding another gallon.
It occurs to me that ... maybe .. a leak on top of a pipe so the coolant doesn't drip out, but the loss of pressure (from the hole) causes the fluid to boil and flash out? This might explain the 'higher than I'd like to see' operating temperature.
It's been snowing for a couple hours now and on the way home I stopped to get gas. When I popped the hood to add some windshield washer, I noticed that there was quite a bit of snow in the engine compartment, especially in the battery area and on the other side of the engine bay as well...When I arrived home, I checked my girlfriend's 2012 Accent that hasn't been moving today and there is snow as well... Is this normal that the snow gets in there so easily???

Successfully installed an engine block heater ! when I was under there I noticed an opening in the plastic that covers bottom of the motor compartment It was under what looks like the transmission on the driver side of the car . I was working through the access door to the oil filter of course. Is there supposed to be two doors under the car and one just is not been replaced ?

Last night I was driving in my 2003 jetta on the intersate at 65mph with the cruise control on. As I came into a turn I had to tap the brakes. As soon as I did the check engine light came on. The car was doing fine so I drove home from school. Today I drove the car to work which is a five minute drive, and back with no problem. I later went to grab lunch and bring it home and then I noticed the check engine light started flashing. I then felt the engine start to stutter, as if it was misfiring. We had the windshield defrost when we started to smell a rotten egg smell. Luckily we were pulling into our drive when we smelled the odor. I immediately turned off the car and got out. I couldn't smell the rotten egg smell, but I did smell burning plastic. I didn't see any smoke and could not pinpoint the cause of the smell.

I bought new tires, changed the oil, had the brakes inspected, you know the things daddy's tell their daughters to always be sure of. I have had no problems with the car till last weekend. My boyfriend and I got into an argument, long story short I sped off, using his words "hot rod style".
I smelt burned rubber (not so new tires anymore) but I figured it was just that. When I got back home my boyfriend said that he smelt something burning under the hood. No smoke or fire just a burning odor. The next morning my car wouldn't start. We jumped it and it ran just fine. Did the errands for the day no problem.The next morning it wouldn't turn on again, this time when we jumped it, it just wouldn't start. I have checked the battery at AutoZone and they said it was fine. the fuses are all good as well.
I purchased a 2006 Impreza 2.5 back in July, and since then, have replaced the cam seal twice but I am still having problems. I smell burned oil and see faint smoke coming from the motor (lookers right- battery side). My local mechanic thinks the camshaft might be at fault, but is unsure. I have only owned Subarus, and have never had this issue with any other models. Head gaskets are brand new, same with timing belt, water-pump, radiator, and cam seal. Vehicle has 160k on it, and is my daily driver.

What about the hose clamp.. it looks weird.. is its special for that application ? I wanna replace it myself but I don't want to do it wrong and turn my car on fire.
