Scraping noise in front end when turning left. Have changed brake pads, calipers, and rotors on both front wheels. There was no scraping noise before changing.
View 2 RepliesI have a '01 Elantra with 145,000 miles on it. Recently I've noticed a slight scraping noise coming from the right front wheel whenever I turn the steering wheel to the left. The sharper I turn, the more pronounced the noise is. However,it is not a loud noise; I can only hear it when I have the windows down. Braking has no effect on the sound whatsoever. I'm thinking it could be a wheel bearing that's just beginning to go bad? Could it be a CV joint? Does this sound like something I should get fixed right away, or could I wait and see if it gets worse?
View 6 Replies2005 3.5L 105K. I had the timing belt replaced at 70K. Ever since then I get a winning noise in the right front when turning left and accelerating. Does not happen turning right. I took it into another dealer and he said it could be in the power steering. But why turning left and not right? He didn't think it was the CV joint.
I changed the PS reservoir in case it was a clogged screen. That did not work. Now I am getting a rattle sound on the right with the car in D or R when the car is first started, moving slow or not moving. The sound goes away in N. I don't know if these sounds are related or not. What could be causing these sounds?
2011 Hyundai Elantra, 42k miles. The car is my girlfriends which I drive once every few weeks. Yesterday I noticed a rumbling noise coming from the right front tire area. The noise only comes about when turning a fairly sharp left while above 20 mph. Taking a left onto a side street etc doesn't cause any noise, but taking one while going through a big intersection etc. Where the speed is up a little bit causes the noise. The tires are original, obviously not new, but they still have a decent amount of tread left on them, they're Continental Pro Contacts.
Tire, ball-joint, brake pad rubbings? I'm going to take it to get looked at tomorrow, I did spray the area with a hose in case there was something caught in there, but that didn't change anything. The tire looks fine, no abnormal wear or bulges, the car is in alignment and makes no other noise except in the circumstance noted.
Noticed this morning that my Honda Civic is making a metallic scraping noise while moving -- happens when not braking. Appears to be coming from the left front. I noticed it at very low speeds. It isn't exactly the "wah-wah-wah" grinding sound that changes a little in pitch as the wheel rotates that I'd expect from a bearing. I've been through a bunch of Youtube videos from people diagnosing various wheel- and brake-related problems and haven't found one that matches mine yet.
View 3 Replies2000 Mercury Villager. Noise in the left front wheel area only. Listened to both sides and zero noise on the right side. It's a metallic scraping noise. It's increase frequency as you speed up much like a train does as it speeds up. And stops when you push on the brakes. Doesn't seem to be related to steering.

Happens most at high speeds when going over bumps. it's a Toyota matrix 2003 with 163k miles. We're on a car trip and are wondering if we need to address this now or if it can wait a few days.

I have a scraping noise coming from the transmission when the clutch is not pressed in, the noise is present whether I am in gear or just in neutral. If I press the clutch in than the noise will completely go away. I have searched and found that these symptoms usually mean its an internal transmission problem and not just the throw out or pilot bearing.
View 4 RepliesMy car has occasionally been exhibiting some stiffness when turning left, a harder turn and when going more slowly (like parking). It feels like a loss of power steering. There's no squeal and the fluid is full, although I don't know the last time it was changed. So far it hasn't happened when turning right.
View 6 RepliesI bought an '08 Elantra about a month ago. A few weeks after buying it i noticed a creaking noise while turning the steering wheel to the left. It happens at low speeds or when stopped, but I haven't heard anything at high speeds. I can't tell for sure but it sounds closer to the inside of the car than the outside and will happen the entire time the steering wheel is turning to the left. No sound turning it to the right.
My brother liked my car so we test drove 3 other Elantras, 2 '08s and an '09. Two of them made the exact same noise. He ended up liking the one that didn't but after a while his started making the EXACT same noise too. I'm thinking this must be a common problem with the '07-'10 Elantras as all 4 cars had the same noise, but I can't find anything about it.
My right strut is bad and I'm having both front struts replaced Monday, so if it's something that can be done while he's doing the struts I'd like to find out before he takes everything apart so he doesn't have to do it twice.
The rear left window and front right windows do not roll down. I have replaced the master control assy. and door switches. I removed the panels and tested the motors with external voltage. +12 v rolls the window up, -12v rolls the window down. Tried the sw and windows only roll up. Master control did not work. Ohmed out wiring appeared to be fine.
After reading the manual it says that everything goes through a bcm, Body Control Module. The manual does not say where it is located. I'm staring to think the BCM or bad ground wire may be the problem. Cannot figure out where the negative voltage comes from.
Our Elantra is 2003 2.0L GLS which has now done 117000 km.
We are very pleased with it. However, the "shock wave" pushed ahead by an oncoming truck can cause a sudden wind whistle - more like a loud shreak that appears to come from the left front of the car.
It can be quite un-nerving when it occurs. It can also be triggered by strong head or cross winds.
I have a 2002 Malibu and we have had the car about 3 years and since we purchased the car it has what a humming noise from the front when changing lanes on the highway or when making curves on the highway only when turning left.
Being an avid Car Talk listener, I decided this was probably being caused by wheel bearings and I decided to tackle the job myself and changed both left and right front wheel hubs and the noise did not change, it is still there exactly as before ! I also replaced the brake pads and rotors while it was apart.
Remembering other car talk conversations, I decided next that it must be the tires, I replaced the tires which were due for replacement anyway and guess what ? The noise is still there exactly as before !
Out of ideas, I took it to a mechanic and he said that he ran the car on the lift and was able to reproduce the noise on the lift and he felt it was coming from the differential within the transmission. While it was at the shop I had him do a wheel alignment as well to eliminate any sort of suspension issue.
My question, does this make any sense ? To me when the car is on the lift, the differential really isn't doing anything, the wheels aren't turning at different speeds because they aren't touching anything therefore to me, the diagnosis of differential doesn't hold water.
Hear a small pop in the cab when I am turning left pulled left wheel everything looks fine. Ball mount maybe, I don't want to tear into it at this point.
View 5 RepliesI have a 2004 2WD supercab. And am hearing a 'clunking' sound when I turn almost full-lock. Below is a summary of what I have experienced so far:
- My truck used to be lowered 2" (below stock) at the front since new. Last month I lifted it (front and rear) and it now sits 2" above stock on new rancho shocks.
- I installed a camber kit and had the front aligned (toe and camber) after the above suspension work.
- The truck drove beautifully for two weeks until one day a 'clunking' sound was heard from the front-left every time I turned left. The alignment also changed as I had to now hold the steering very slightly to the left to drive straight.
- The alignment shop re-did the toe tracking (the camber did not change) and the truck drove great for about a day. Now I can hear the same clunking sound when I turn right and the tracking is again screwed up meaning I need to hold the steering very slightly to the right to drive straight.
What parts are playing up and what may need replacing?
I am hearing a grinding noise when I turn the wheel to the left.. and when I straighten it again the noise goes away.. no noise at all when turning the wheel to the right. what could it be? 2006 Hyundai Santa Fe / 205,000 km's
View 4 RepliesI was on my way to the hardware store today and when entering the parking lot I heard a scraping sounds coming from the front end. I parked and looked under the GT and did not see anything hanging, drove around the parking lot and heard it again. Does not matter straight line or turning, i did notice when I braked I could not hear it. What this could be ? I went out again later to try to pin point it but I am not able to hear it anymore. Just not sure if I should take it in or not.
View 1 RepliesI have an 03 Elantra with a slight hum coming from the front left wheel area. It starts after 35 mph, does not seem to get louder as speed increases. I have about 3500 miles on Pirelli P6 plus 195 60 15 tires all at 35 psi, front brakes are new, cv boots are not cracked or torn and I do not notice any abnormal heat coming from front left hub(wheel) bearing area.
View 1 RepliesMy car seems to make a tick tick tick sound coming from the left front wheel well, but it only occurs when I make right turns. Not left or when driving straight. Could this be a bad cv joint or wheel bearing? Again, only happens when making right turns and I believe at any speed and the sound interval I believe is shorter (faster tick tick) at higher speeds. Also, the vehicle is a 2001 manual transmission and pressing the clutch I believe (cant confirm) stops or slows the sound.
View 4 RepliesJetta starts making a noise on the front left side when I turn sharp rights like in parking lots. There is no VW dealer within a 2hr drive. Take it to local auto repair shop. The guy says it's the wheel bearings on the front left. The Jetta makes a different sound originating from the left front than originally still when turning right sharply.
BTW this sound isn't very loud and is not grinding or popping more of a whoopwhooopwhoooop Go home take off tire. One lugbolt twists off with fingers. First bad sign. Rotors on front not pretty but pretty smooth brake pads look brand new. Still really thick no uneven wear.
Do a sharp left u turn to get to auto parts store. Afs/bulb failure pops on. Solid warning light yet all the bulbs are working fine.
Turn car off. Go buy rotors. Ask about light no one knows. Go back out start car. Light is gone.. okay that was weird.
Replace rotors anyway so they are nice and shiny lube up the important parts. Put everything back together.back out of garage stupid bulb light is back on... restart jetta Its off.
Start driving everything sounds fine... parking lot test left turns quiet right turn SAME FREAKING NOISE. It has never made any noise when driving straight or on curvy road just sharp right turns.
Last couple drives I have noticed some front end noise on the left side. Back in May I also noticed grease all over behind the rotor. I believe this is the grease inserted via ABS hole into the unit bearing. I do not hear the needle bearing crunching while driving and did not here it in May either. I also attempted to move the unit-bearing up and down thinking the axle seal was toast but it seemed solid at the time.
Today I hear some noise while turning left which lead to the pictures below. Wet side is Driver side, dry side is passenger. Tomorrow morning I should have some time to take a look at this more in depth. Passenger needle bearing was changed last year and no issues since then......
