I have a 2005 Elantra GT hatchback that I love with a 5 speed transmission. Lately every time I'm in 2nd gear, the transmission will pop out of 2nd into neutral. This only happens in 2nd gear. I heard it could be the shift collar (i.e. teeth?) that aren't grabbing in that gear.
View 5 RepliesI drive a 2001 Toyota Tacoma 5 Speed manual and as recently as last Friday it seems to have developed a problem with third gear. Occasionally the gearshift will actually pop out of third gear back into neutral. It has happened randomly, but also it has happened at least once when I hit a rather large bump, it seemed to have literally knocked it loose from third gear. On one occasion I tested to see if I could pull it out of third gear without stepping on the clutch, and it worked once, but I have tried it again and it doesn't always let me.
To counter this problem I have been just pushing on the stick all the while in third gear to prevent it from popping out and that seems to work, but I'd like to find a real fix for it, and as usual, if possible, a cheap one.
I have an 89 f150 4x4 manual transmission, when in gear (second mainly) and you let off the gas to let it coast, loud pops come from under cab (about where tranny begins) any info if it's internal or bad tranny....
View 2 RepliesI've been working on a cruise control issue on & off for about a year now. Vehicle is a 2011 UD Elantra with a 6 speed manual trans. Problem is cruise won't set in 6th gear. Works perfectly in 2nd through 5th gears.
Cruise power light stays on but won't set. Upshift indicator working correctly. I've had Hyundai field service engineers look at it 3 times with no luck. Vehicle has no fault codes at all. All switch & sensor inputs are correct. The only vehicle I had with a man. trans. to compare to was a 2013 MD. Cruise worked fine in 6th on that vehicle. The last word we got from Hyundai (supposedly from Korea), was that this is normal and cruise on that model is not supported in 6th gear. I find this hard to believe but I wouldn't doubt this is a programming issue. 6th gear should be the most used gear for cruise operation.
My 2005 elantra 5-speed had typical clutch issues. Had a new one put in where i worked which repaired dump trucks and dumpster roll-off trucks. Got in the car and still had similar issues. I say similar because now when i start it cold, i have no 1st or 2nd..start moving in 3rd and drop into 2nd. After about 10 minutes of driving, you can chirp the tires in 1st. Could they have put gear oil that was too heavy and it needs to get warmed up? Does this sound possible? Should I change the gear oil?
View 3 RepliesWhen temperature surpasses 90 degrees inside car (especially while sitting parked while I'm at work) I have problems getting shifter to stay in gear. When I shift in D or R the shifter immediately shifts back to neutral. I found I can hold the shifter in the desired direction and the car goes like normal.
I tried a test of leaving windows slightly open and found the car cooler inside and the gear shift problems did not occur.
The dealership says the gear shift is electronic, no gears. Is there a switch for this under the panel by the gear shift? I have a 2008 Prius, that I recently purchased used. My wife has a 2005 Prius that we purchased new and have never had an issue like this.
I've been hearing a quiet 'thump' when shifting. In particular, when first letting up the clutch starting out in 1 but also when shifting between gears when the clutch is fully down such as from 2->3.
I thought perhaps a fluid change was in order since I'm at 110,000 miles. It didn't make any difference. (I used Mobil 1 GL5 which according to independent tests is safe on yellow metals.)
So then I wondered if it's the engine mounts, but I'm not sure what it sounds like when they need to be replaced or if simply shifting between gears while driving as described above would cause a worn one to 'thump'.
Just got my 2013 Elantra Limited last weekend. It appears the car is having some issues with the transmission shifter. I am not sure if its tranny related, but I highly suspect it is. Dealer gave me the usual bs not being able to duplicate the symptoms.
1. Intermittently, gear selector would get stuck in neutral, when I try to put the car into P, after a long or a short drive.
2. I would have to wiggle the shifter to get into P, or I would have to shift to D, and then I am able to shift back into P.
I recently started having an issue where when I shift from 1 to 2 I'll get a quick grind of the gears. Here are the circumstances:
- the clutch is completely depressed, just the act of moving the shifter from 1 to 2 causes the grind.
- only when the car is moving.
- one time I was driving and coasting for a while just shifting back and forth from 1 to 2 with the clutch fully depressed and it kept happening.
- if I shift really slowly I can usually prevent it from happening, though I don't think it's RPM related.
I just picked up another GTi and knew the transmission was iffy when I bought it. I had to deal with the serpentine belt tensioner which is now new and also a new waterpump since it was wobbling.
I've already drained and replaced whatever oil was in there with VW G60 Gear Oil which is what my Dealer here told me to put in and it shifts smoother now but still has the same issue. I also did the Shifter Cable adjustment to see if that was the problem but that only made it easier to shift but it still got stuck.
Basically what happens is when driving I shift into 3rd gear and when I go to shift out of 3rd it comes out of gear but it's like it hits a brick wall and will not go into the home position. I was hoping the adjustment and new oil would work but it hasn't done anything.
The title says it all. I have no CEL.
View 4 Replies1993 Geo Prizm with some odd 275,000 miles on it. Was at a stop sign, in first gear, and gave the car some gas. Very quickly it jumped out of first gear and stopped moving abruptly. Tried to get it back in first gear and it just stayed in neutral. Had to push it to the side of the road. Tried putting it in any gear and it wouldn't go. Then tried to have the car running in neutral and let up on the clutch and as soon as I started letting up on the clutch, something (like metal) started grinding. Pushing the clutch it (in neutral) stops the grinding. So, do I need a new clutch? New transmission?
View 11 RepliesMy 2006 Elantra (54,000 miles) shifts really, really hard when it's not cold and passes through the 35 mph range -- hard enough to make you glad you've got your seatbelt on. I've taken it to my regular mechanic and now it's in an automatic transmission shop.
My mechanic changed the fluid (twice), and took it through a "learning sequence". The fluid didn't look that bad and he reported that there were no codes to work with. He thinks I'm going to have to get a new transmission.
The AT shop has confirmed that there are no codes to work with and that the problem begins at 143 degrees. They tell me that the transmission is shifting into a higher gear without releasing the lower gear. They tried replacing a couple of solenoids, but that yielded no change in behavior. Now, they're telling me they "think" I need a new computer. I'm just afraid the trial & error approach is going to cost me a boat-load.
My car is a 2003 Volkswagen Jetta GLI, I was on my way somewhere when slowing down i put my car in neutral and began braking. Going faster than i thought i shifted into first gear at about 40mph. At that moment i felt rattling in both the gear stick and the clutch pedal, i tried to shift again in case it was just a hiccup and my gear stick was stuck in neutral, i couldn't switch into any gears.Now when my car is off is the only time i can move the gear stick into the gear slots. And i also lost a lot of pressure in the clutch pedal but it does not stick to the floor it returns to normal position after a moment or so.

I was stopped at a light tonight making a left hand turn, I had the car in 1st gear and the my foot on the clutch. I slowly released the clutch and proceeded to make my left hand turn, halfway thru the turn the car made a noise that sounded like a pop (almost as if something came apart underneath the front end of the car and was loose) and then my manual transmission went into neutral. I slowly coasted to the side of the road and had the vehicle towed.
After I had coasted to the side, I tried putting the car into gear and the engine would rev up but the vehicle would not go forward or reverse. I tried all 5 gears and reverse. While sitting there the car would beep and the screen would say "hand brake on" and if I put the car into first this message would go off. The message only came on about 2 times in 5 minutes and never stayed on.
I have a 1997 Honda Civic 5-speed with about 200,000 miles. It is making a low-pitched whining noise when I let the clutch out in neutral. I took it to a mechanic who immediately diagnosed it as the throw out bearing. Being mechanically inclined, I dropped the tranny and changed the clutch and bearing, but started it back up, and the noise is still there - as if I did nothing at all. It is not constant volume - sometimes it is louder than others. It is usually loudest first start of the day. I live in Houston, so its not like it is "cold", just not hot. To be fair to the mechanic, the bearing was quite corroded, but everything else seemed to be working properly.
View 13 RepliesGot my 97 celica GT 5 speed, the transmission took a crap, pops out of 1st 3rd and 5th gear, grinds into 3rd when cold even before it pops out. first off I read somewhere that this could be just linkage bushings, but the transmission will pop out of gear in first, then will grind going back into 1st and same with 5th, which linkage bushings do I check? is it the ones on the selector shafts? also the trans has 250k on it, and it looks like the fluid hasn't been changed in 200k.
View 2 RepliesOn a manual car, I know it's not the best thing to go from neutral, completely bypass 1st gear, and shift to 2nd gear. As well as 3rd to 5th bypassing 4th. However, is it the same for downshifting into neutral or another gear? Will it hurt the transmission to go from 3rd to neutral (bypassing 1st and 2nd) when coming to a stop? I do know that shifting from 4th to 2nd gear and bypassing 3rd will harm your tranny. I just want to double check if I'm right...
View 24 RepliesThe shifter will not usually stay in 5th gear for very long. The clutch and flywheel were replaced a few weeks ago just before i purchased the car but this problem has only cropped up in the last week. Could it be shifter linkage adjustment?
View 3 Replies2005 Elantra. After I start the car and let it idle, it will slowly start to increase in RPMs without touching the gas pedal. The RPMs will stop around 3-4k and will remain there. If it put the car into gear, forward or reverse, it will surge when releasing the brake. The RPMs will vary, rising and falling, randomly but won't return to normal idle, around 2k if I remember right.
I have recently changed my fuel pump, fuel filter and screen. Also, changed spark plugs and wires.
I know that the transmission needs to be checked, it was slamming into 3rd gear when driven in automatic, but can be avoided with manual shifting. Not sure if this could have anything to do with the new problem.
Our 2002 Elantra (automatic, 57000k) seems to have a blown transmission. A few days ago, it sounded like the car was "whining" and then it was having difficult time engaging next gear and eventually check engine came on and the car stalled. Firestone said it's a transmission problem.
We've had the car for less than 10 years so technically this should be covered under their powertrain warranty but I have a strong suspicion that the dealership will find a reason to not honor the warranty. It's still below 60k miles so we really didn't have to replace transmission oil.
