I just replaced half shaft on driver side of my 2002 elantra. I took off brake caliper and pads to get to shaft now that I've put everything back together theirs a sound like the brakes are slightly touching but not sure it's not cv shaft?
View 1 RepliesI have an 03 Elantra with a slight hum coming from the front left wheel area. It starts after 35 mph, does not seem to get louder as speed increases. I have about 3500 miles on Pirelli P6 plus 195 60 15 tires all at 35 psi, front brakes are new, cv boots are not cracked or torn and I do not notice any abnormal heat coming from front left hub(wheel) bearing area.
View 1 RepliesMy car seems to make a tick tick tick sound coming from the left front wheel well, but it only occurs when I make right turns. Not left or when driving straight. Could this be a bad cv joint or wheel bearing? Again, only happens when making right turns and I believe at any speed and the sound interval I believe is shorter (faster tick tick) at higher speeds. Also, the vehicle is a 2001 manual transmission and pressing the clutch I believe (cant confirm) stops or slows the sound.
View 4 RepliesOk at 40 mph and above I have a loud humming noise coming from my left front wheel. I replaced my rotor and pads due to normal wear. I also replaced the bearing. No fix. Tires were rotated a month ago. Could it be my CV joint? The boots are fine.
View 3 RepliesI have a 2013 Elantra, new in January, 6600 miles on it, and I took it in to the dealership today because it was making funny noises this week from the left front wheel; the noise gets faster as I drive faster. The left front tire has a bubble in it, and they're telling me the wheel is bent and the bearing is cracked, so they'll need to replace the tire, wheel, hub, bearing and do something with the alignment AND it's not covered under warranty because it is "impact damage." Is this even possible on a new car like this? For the bearing to be cracked without a big accident? I don't remember hitting a pot hole or running over a curb. Shouldn't this be covered under normal use? I'm concerned that I'm being ripped off
View 16 RepliesOver the past few months I'd noticed an intermittent grinding noise coming from my left front wheel at low speeds. I took it in once but it refused to play along so I finally managed to catch it on camera and let the dealership listen to it. They booked me for today, saying it sounded like a wheel bearing (to which I agreed) and I dropped her off around ten, not expecting it to cooperate for the second time.
I got a call from the dealer around 2 PM saying that they were able to duplicate the noise and that when they took the left front wheel off and ran the car on the lift with the rest of the wheels off the ground, the noise went away. Even stranger still, when they put the wheel on the tire balancing machine and spun it, gronch, gronch...gronch, gronch....gronch, gronch. It was coming from inside the wheel! I gave them permission to dismount the tire from the wheel and about ten minutes later I got another call saying they'd found a handful of tiny hard rubber balls inside the mounted wheel/tire assembly that were rolling down the inside of the wheel and causing the grumbling at low speed.
Here's the kicker: they were in all four wheels! The tech even saved them for me so I could take a look and they don't look like anything mass-produced; some are larger than others, some are round and some are oval-shaped but when I dropped one on the glass advisor desk, it made a very clear 'Clink!'.
I have 2002 BMW 325xi (all wheel drive). For about 2-3 months now there is a squeaky noise coming from passenger side front wheel. It sounds like a really bad and rusty coil spring but the weird part is that that noise only appears in warm weather. It has nothing to do with how much distance I drive. If it is 70 odd degrees or warmer outside, the noise starts. In warm weather, the car does not have to be running/moving to hear the noise. I can just push down the passenger side front and hear the noise. I took to a mechanic and he wants me to replace tie rods, control arm and struts. basically the whole suspension system on the front for this noise (in other words, he does not know what exactly is making the noise, so replace everything)
View 5 RepliesHaving problem with my car (2001 Elantra GT) - over the last month or so it's been occasionally making a very loud (not but consistent) grinding noise coming from the front of the car when decelerating at low speeds. The noise sounds like gears slipping over each other but cuts in and out. It's pretty loud and not a nice noise to hear! Sometimes it makes the noise when I brake firmy but not until I reach lower speeds... mostly it's just when coming to a stop, but it did it once last week when I was pulling very slowly out of a parking spot and not even braking.
As it's become more frequent (going form maybe once a week to several times every car journey) I have started to feel something in the brake pedal also, like there's something kicking it from behind. I took it to a mechanic and had to pay a ton of money to get a broken front left ABS ring replaced (it also had the front right ring replaced in May), and within 2 minutes of driving away from the place the noise was back. Before I spend even more money that I don't have on taking it back for extra diagnosis.
I'm told that this is almost certainly the ABS system that has a fault even though the ABS light never shows except when I start the car, and I've taken the fuses out of the ABS in order to confirm that it is. I haven't heard the noise after a few days of driving with ABS unplugged so I think we can be reasonably sure here. Is there anything that I can check myself or test (I'm not very handy when it comes to cars) or can you tell from this information what it's likely to be? Other things that I've noticed with the car which may or may not be relevant are:
- the warning lights for brakes, ABS and TCS are all lit with the fuses for ABS1 and ABS2 taken out. I take it this is normal for all 3 to illuminate with the fuses out?
- since unplugging the ABS I've noticed a slight metallic squeal from the brakes as if the brakes are worn down. Didn't notice this before I unplugged ABS though it may have been there, not sure.
- sometimes when going over a speed bump or just a minor imperfection in the road I hear a clunk in the front of the car and feel something move in the underside of the car. Happens mostly at lower speeds also, but not if I go over the bump really slowly.
- in the fuse box when I took out the ABS fuses I noticed there was a bit of minor melting/brown burn marks on the top of the connections marked (iirc) ECO3 and ECO4 on the diagram (large white connectors). Is this anything to be concerned about?
- sometimes when I have air coming into the car through the air vents it will become significantly warmer for a few minutes, then slowly go back to normal. Can't think of any circumstance that links the times when this happens (eg. speed, weather etc).
- the oil pan has a leak which is on the list of things to fix when the car works properly.
So, last week I got my transmission replaced and they also had to replace the CV axle because it was damaged beyond repair when the Transmission self-distructed. They drove it after all the repairs and said it was driving fine, just that it had a belt squeak.
On my way home (30 min drive) about 10 minutes in, still in the city, my brakes start making a grinding noise and sort of a thump thump thump when I brake which sounds like its coming from the passenger side front, it makes me really nervous. It doesn't sound like any brake grindy noise Ive ever heard before and it wasn't making any brake noises before it broke down. (On a side note: it also made a weird noise maybe the first 3 times I drove it after getting it back and I turned the wheel hard to back out of a parking space, that used to be when I heard the belt squeak but I haven't made it squeak since I got the car back.)
Everyone I talked to said it sounded like it needed new pads so tonight I bought new brake pads and rotors for the front and got everything taken apart. The rotors didn't look bad at all, just some light surface scratches, nothing deep, no warping I could see, and the brake pads look almost brand new. I did notice that the inside brake pad on the passenger side was missing its little metal plate that is usually between the caliper and the pad, so I went ahead and replaced all of the brake pads hoping this lost metal plate was the issue.
I also turned the rotor by hand on each side while the brake pads were off and the only difference I could notice was when turning the passenger side one it made a little more noise almost like it was loose.
I got everything put back together and drove around the neighborhood with my boyfriend in the car to listen, the grinding noise was gone and it seemed to brake really well (never got above 30 mph.) However, on my way to return the rotors to advanced auto (45-50 mph) it started making the thump thump thump noise but without the grinding, still on the passenger side. I can feel it in the gas pedal and now it not only happens when I'm braking, but also any time I let my foot off the gas pedal. The only time I dont feel/hear it is when I'm accelerating.
My 2002 Elantra Gls 1.8 got some weird sound coming from all 4 corners of the wheel... Recently I had replaced the front wheel bearing as the car goes very noisy when come into corners... But there still some knock... knock... sound after the car warming up especially from rear wheel.
I replaced all 4 absorbers 1 year ago as well as the tie-rods end... Still facing the same problems, the mechanic also don't know where to start...
What should I replace to settle the problem??? All the rubber bush??? Recently mileage on my car is 190000miles.
I have a clicking sound coming from the front right wheel, happens while driving straight or turning. My guy checked the cv boots, axle bolt, various other connections that seem fine. Then he takes a phrase out of Satan's handbook and says "take it to the dealer". I saw the horns on his head and the red eyes while he was saying it. So I made apt for next week. I don't think it's anything serious , Orr maybe it's something to do with the rotor, caliper, break pads ? Everything else seems tight.
View 3 RepliesI own a 2002 Elantra GT that's had a decent repair record but just yesterday developed a leak that is almost exactly 18" toward center from the outside of the right front tire and 5" to the rear of the center of the tire (18" in, 5" back from rf tire). It doesn't seem to be a small leak and unfortunately I don't know what the fluid is. I've never changed the oil myself and have never seen the undercarriage. The measurements were made by marking the the concrete by the front tire then measuring in to the deposit.
View 2 RepliesI've been having a lot of noise coming from the front left tire, and I finally had it diagnosed as a bad wheel bearing today.
I noticed that the front wheel bearings are sold individually while the rear wheel bearings are sold as hub assemblies. Is there a certain way that the front wheel bearings have to be removed and pressed on? I'm trying to see if this is a DIY repair.
I gotta a roaring noise coming from my right front while turning. Planning on replacing just the wheel bearings tomorrow & not the whole hub assembly(2008 2wd). Is there a thread that lays out the steps and other parts I may need? I've seen alot different stories on the net on how to do it. Everthing from I can press new bearings to I have to do 4x4 hub conversion. Seems to be some confusion.

View 10 RepliesSo I have a 2011 Elantra GLS with just over 20,000mi on it. I noticed today when I make a sharp left turn there is a grinding noise from the passenger front wheel. Almost sounds like the rotors are grinding on the shields. I am going to the dealer in two days to have it looked at, This is the only situation where I hear the noise.
View 2 RepliesSo my 2012 Elantra developed a "creaking" noise coming from the wheel when warmed up and at low speeds. It almost sounded like really old heavy door when it opens that goes "thunk thunk thunk" as it sticks.
I usually work on my own cars, but for so me reason I took it to the dealership because I didn't know where it was coming from. After a 30 minute test drive to reproduce the issue, he took another 30 minutes to tell me that an "axle bolt" was loose and needed to be tightening.
I've never heard of an axle bolt - I'm only asking now because the issue's come back a few months later, and I know the dealership's gonna charge me again if I ask. Can't be that hard if it didn't take him more than 20 minutes to fix. Are they referring to the main cv/axle nut?
Having issues with noise from either LT or RT front wheel bearings? My 2011 Elantra has some sort of noise coming from the LT frt wheel
View 10 RepliesTonight it was a perfect 72 degrees and I had to run over to a friend's house and pick up my backpack as I didn't feel like riding my bike the ten miles home with that thing on my back. As I usually do when it's nice outside, I opened both front windows and the sunroof and immediately noticed a mid-level pitch grinding noise that comes and goes but is mostly noticeable at low speeds. Initially I thought it was the brakes dragging but it doesn't change with a brake application so I'm guessing it's the front wheel bearings. I'm calling the dealer in the morning to set up a service appointment.

I've noticed it for awhile now but didn't think too much of it but now that it's warmed up enough for the windows to be down, it's starting to annoy me
I read the TSB a few months back regarding the rubber coupling in the MDPS unit but it seems more like a suspension noise to me.
I bought a 2002, being a total new by I thought that faint humming noise was the electric motors doing , it's thing. Noise was faint when only me in the car or going slowly. Well as soon as I had someone sitting in the rear it was a loud humming droning noise that seemed to get quieter when making right turns like heavy off ramps at speed.
Finally jacked the car up and checked for wheel bearing noise. Fronts were too hard to check as there was resistance while turning wheel by hand, but the rear passenger seemed rough but no noise or looseness while turning by hand compared to the driver rear side.
