Elantra MD (2010-15) :: Sunroof Not Fully Opening In One Shot
May 22, 2012
When I open my sunroof, it doesn't fully open in one shot. If I want it fully open I must press the button again and hold it. Is this normal?

View 18 RepliesHaving problem with trunk lid ....... it is occasionally opening without activation ....... sometimes I'm less than a 1/2 mi from home, sometimes one to two miles from home ...... trunk just opens and button (trunk release) on key fob has not been pushed ???
View 11 Replies2014 Elantra SE with premium package, I've had it a little over a month. Last week the ac plug stopped working in the passenger seat area. BF said have them check at first service.
Now the trunk wouldn't open with my key fob, or the spare. So I thought maybe a shopping bag handle got in the way. On the way home from the store, the trunk open light popped on randomly. Trunk wasn't open. Okay, that's odd...
Now the alarm has been going off randomly. 3 times in the past 2 hours, I'm wondering if it's a massive electrical problem waiting to happen.
When I open my trunk it just doesn't swing open, it feels like it opens up half way bounces back a little and then opens up fully.
I chalked it up to it being a single shock on one side and it can't open that fast but I want to make sure I don't have something defective "Already got hit twice in the head by the trunk lock after leaning into fast "...
Sometimes after opening fully, my trunk drops down again about halfway. I cannot think of any logical explanation for this. Moreover, it doesn't happen all the time. But the occurrences are pretty unpredictable. I took the car in to my service dept. and the trunk worked flawlessly. But later that same day, it malfunctioned. It makes a noise as it drops and comes down at a rather fast speed. In fact it's rather scary because if it didn't stop about half-way, it could be potentially harmful.
This happens even when there is no-one near the trunk.
Is it normal for my 2014's sunroof to open only 3/4 of the way, then stop? I can open it the rest of the way if I hold the button. Any way to make it open all the way with one press?
View 3 RepliesI love my Elantra Limited! Put almost 7k on her already. I did notice something about the sunroof recently though. Recently, I noticed it isn't flush with the roof. It sticks up a little in the rear.
Also, I was washing my car today, and noticed that the "drip tray" (I believe it's called, the plastic around the seam of the sunroof interior), had some water in it. It seems a little water got through the area where it's sticking up.
So I've had my Elantra Limited for a couple weeks now and love it! But the past couple days or so, the sunroof has been acting a bit twitchy. When I hit the button to close it, it closes almost all the way, then reopens. I know it has an "automatic reversal" feature that prevents things getting stuck, but I checked and saw nothing in the tracks? Hopefully it's nothing major, since it's a new car.
View 2 RepliesEarlier today I went out to give a family friend a ride and as the temperature had climbed, elected to close the sunroof and windows and use the A/C. While out, I noticed an abnormal amount of wind noise coming from the sunroof and double-checked to make sure it was actually closed. It didn't budge when I pushed it towards the 'closed' position so I figured it was just my imagination.
Well cut to getting home about 20 minutes later and sure enough, the sunroof is ever so slightly down at the back, even when stopped in the 'closed' position. In order to get a proper seal, I have to tap the tilt switch up ever so briefly.
I'm hoping that the sunroof control unit has simply lost its bearings and needs to be reset and though I've got an appointment set up with my dealer for next Tuesday (the soonest they have available), I tried my own solution for the night. I put the roof in as close to the properly closed position as possible and disconnected the negative battery terminal. I plan on leaving it this way for at least 8 or 9 hours and shall report back.
My girlfriend drives a 99 Passat and while driving the other day the sun roof opened on it's own. moving the switch did nothing. We had to manually close the sunroof. a few minutes later it did it again. Usually I'd tell her she's nuts and imagining things but i was in the car while it happened.
View 5 RepliesMy mother keeps telling me her sunroof keeps opening (tilting) by itself and I didn't believe her until I was in the car when it happened. It just goes up by itself... Should I just bring it in?
View 14 RepliesOver the last few days my car's sunroof keeps opening and shutting by itself. Its starting to get really annoying and embarrassing especially while on a date.
View 4 RepliesI have had my Elantra Limited 2012 for about a month. Just recently I heard a rattle that appeared to be coming from the rear of the vehicle, but after moving my head around I have since been able to isolate it to the sunroof right about the driver's head. I can reach up there an pull down on a metal hinge, and the rattling stops. Drives me crazy listening to a rattle right above my head.
View 14 Replies2014 Elantra GLS ... Upon closing, and just as it reaches the wind defector, the Sunroof will " kick back" no apparent reason. This may happen once, twice in a row or not at all. I have checked the sunroof path and the wind defector, but no obstructions are visible.
View 2 RepliesSo today was above freezing.. [URL] .... I open the sunroof as I'm driving around town, and I notice a rather distinct rumbling noise.. I put my hand against it and discover the roof is vibrating harmonically. Which I've discovered seems to happen any time I have the sunroof fully open, over ~30mph (50kmh). If I close it one tick, the problem disappears completely, I guess as the airflow changes. Is this badly-designed aerodynamics, or actually something misplaced or misaligned in my sunroof?
View 17 RepliesWhen opening the sunroof, usually for the first time in a day, the sunroof will make a squeal kind of noise. Nothing appears to be in the tracks or anything.
Usually if I close it, and reopen it, it seems to go away (guess it re-lubed?)
Kind of embarrassing on a newish car (2014) with only 30k miles.
Today was the first day I drove my Elantra on the interstate with the sunroof open. When I was cruising at 65-70mph, I kept hearing a noise that I thought was coming from another car. It sort of sounded like a popping or thumping noise. After a few minutes, I reached my hand up and noticed the sound was coming from the metal bar that rises up a little at the front of the opening when the glass slides back. The wind was vibrating it and making it flap in the wind.
View 2 RepliesNothing is more annoying to me than constant rattles and noises in a vehicle. My 2012 Limited Elantra makes a couple of noises that are really annoying. The first is a constant light rattle the seems to come from the dome light area or the sunroof. I haven't been able to pinpoint it, but it drives me nuts. The other noise comes from the back doors area, or maybe the pillars. It happens on both sides, but mostly on the drivers side, and it only happens when the car goes over certain bumps, or when I take a curve a certain way. It almost sounds like a cracking noise. I've heard of glove compartment rattles, but that doesn't seem to happen with my car.
View 87 RepliesSo there seems to be an issue with the sunroof already ( 2 weeks since ownership) . In UP/ DOWN mode it will not fully close and causes wind noise. With up down I'm referring to the tilt functionality. I don't get the message sunroof open when leaving vehicle however.
The work around is for me to open the sunroof in the horizontal mode and then close it again to get a proper seal and to eliminate wind noise. In the image you can see that the rear part of the moonroof sits lower than the metal roof....
Read the manual. performed reset. The reset made no difference. So basically to remedy the situation one either must open and close the sunroof or after closing it from tilt mode bump the button to make the moon roof rear part raise and become flush with the roof panel.
My Mom has an '04 RX330, and the other day the sunroof randomly opened, and she closed it with the button with no problem. For the last 3 days, this has occurred randomly (opening only - all closing is by her) and all occurrences are when she is driving (not parked).
I told her to wrap the fob in foil today to remove that connectivity and to see if the fob is to blame. We will replace those batteries anyway as I don't know that they have ever been replaced.
Just picked up a 2001 GLX wagon and it is something my 93 did -- when opening the sunroof all the way, it makes a "popping" noise. With my last car, it was from something that snapped rendering it useless.
