Elantra MD (2010-15) :: Sunroof Closes Almost All The Way, Then Reopens
Jun 5, 2014
So I've had my Elantra Limited for a couple weeks now and love it! But the past couple days or so, the sunroof has been acting a bit twitchy. When I hit the button to close it, it closes almost all the way, then reopens. I know it has an "automatic reversal" feature that prevents things getting stuck, but I checked and saw nothing in the tracks? Hopefully it's nothing major, since it's a new car.

It happened twice today. Didn't hit the trunk button on the key fab either. In fact I have a remote starter with a different fab.

My 2008 has about 49k miles on her and my Moonroof started acting up the other day. The tilt function works perfectly. It even slides out to max open, however when I attempt to close it, it closes about 2/3 of the way then it acts as if it senses something in the way and opens all the way back up. I didn't take anything apart, but didn't notice anything in the rails. I also didn't hear any sort of grinding or stalling on the motor. If the motor is going bad?

Is it normal for my 2014's sunroof to open only 3/4 of the way, then stop? I can open it the rest of the way if I hold the button. Any way to make it open all the way with one press?

I love my Elantra Limited! Put almost 7k on her already. I did notice something about the sunroof recently though. Recently, I noticed it isn't flush with the roof. It sticks up a little in the rear.
Also, I was washing my car today, and noticed that the "drip tray" (I believe it's called, the plastic around the seam of the sunroof interior), had some water in it. It seems a little water got through the area where it's sticking up.

Earlier today I went out to give a family friend a ride and as the temperature had climbed, elected to close the sunroof and windows and use the A/C. While out, I noticed an abnormal amount of wind noise coming from the sunroof and double-checked to make sure it was actually closed. It didn't budge when I pushed it towards the 'closed' position so I figured it was just my imagination.
Well cut to getting home about 20 minutes later and sure enough, the sunroof is ever so slightly down at the back, even when stopped in the 'closed' position. In order to get a proper seal, I have to tap the tilt switch up ever so briefly.
I'm hoping that the sunroof control unit has simply lost its bearings and needs to be reset and though I've got an appointment set up with my dealer for next Tuesday (the soonest they have available), I tried my own solution for the night. I put the roof in as close to the properly closed position as possible and disconnected the negative battery terminal. I plan on leaving it this way for at least 8 or 9 hours and shall report back.

When I open my sunroof, it doesn't fully open in one shot. If I want it fully open I must press the button again and hold it. Is this normal?

I have had my Elantra Limited 2012 for about a month. Just recently I heard a rattle that appeared to be coming from the rear of the vehicle, but after moving my head around I have since been able to isolate it to the sunroof right about the driver's head. I can reach up there an pull down on a metal hinge, and the rattling stops. Drives me crazy listening to a rattle right above my head.

2014 Elantra GLS ... Upon closing, and just as it reaches the wind defector, the Sunroof will " kick back" no apparent reason. This may happen once, twice in a row or not at all. I have checked the sunroof path and the wind defector, but no obstructions are visible.

Today was the first day I drove my Elantra on the interstate with the sunroof open. When I was cruising at 65-70mph, I kept hearing a noise that I thought was coming from another car. It sort of sounded like a popping or thumping noise. After a few minutes, I reached my hand up and noticed the sound was coming from the metal bar that rises up a little at the front of the opening when the glass slides back. The wind was vibrating it and making it flap in the wind.

Nothing is more annoying to me than constant rattles and noises in a vehicle. My 2012 Limited Elantra makes a couple of noises that are really annoying. The first is a constant light rattle the seems to come from the dome light area or the sunroof. I haven't been able to pinpoint it, but it drives me nuts. The other noise comes from the back doors area, or maybe the pillars. It happens on both sides, but mostly on the drivers side, and it only happens when the car goes over certain bumps, or when I take a curve a certain way. It almost sounds like a cracking noise. I've heard of glove compartment rattles, but that doesn't seem to happen with my car.

Sunroof developing rattles? It is more noticeable with the sunroof open. Have had the car 9 months and it has just started rattling on any bumps- very annoying.

This might be better in the section of sun-roof issues, but I could not see how to add it there. Our 2013 GT has less that 5 thousand miles on it, and we've developed a problem where on occasion the sunroof will suddenly open or close all by itself. Sometimes it will just move one way or the other 2 or 3 inches than stop. Sounds crazy, and like something that will be hard to find.

2013 Elantra GT prompted me to join. There is a creaking sound coming from the closed panoramic sunroof when I drive slowly over an uneven surface (e.g. driving over an uneven gravel driveway that has potholes). It is only an issue when the car is subject to a twisting action, and the roof is closed. For example, there is no creak when I drive 90 degrees over a speed bump; but, there is a creak if I drive over the speed bump at a diagonal. The creak disappears when the sunroof is open. I have taken the car back to the dealership several times and they don't know how to address the problem .
How this creak can be eliminated (without use of sledge hammer, which has crossed my mind at few times; also, driving with the sunroof open all the time is not an option for those of us living in the north).

Driving down the highway on a sunny, beautiful Texas day, I had the sunroof closed but the sun shade open. I heard this loud pop that sounded like a gun and looked up to see the sunroof has shattered on my 2010 Acura TL. I was terrified but didn't lose control of the car, shut the shade, and drove it to the nearest dealership. It was $950 to replace the glass and the dealer said it would not be covered by warranty as a rock must have hit the sunroof. I only heard a pop, though--wouldn't a rock have made a separate hit followed by the pop explosion?
The whole experience has just left a bad impression of Acura and the dealer's refusal consider the warranty. Our insurance deductible is too high to cover the glass. Looking on the internet (unscientific, I know) I saw a few stories similar to mine where the sunroof exploded as the driver was driving down the highway due to pressure in the cabin being incompatible with the sunny day and pressure outside. Is this possible?

Last night we had torrential rains in Baltimore. This morning there were drops of water on the CD's on my passenger side seat, and the seat itself was pretty damp. Also water on the floor near the passengers' side door.
I checked the windows and the sunroof and all were completely closed. I had opened the internal slider on the sunroof yesterday to get some light. Usually I keep the slider closed. Maybe it was leaking even before yesterday, but I didn't notice it because the slider was catching the water.
Very disappointing. My 2011 Prius is less than a year old. I got the sunroof because of the solar cooling, which I like. I didn't think I'd have a problem with a well built car like the Prius, which I am otherwise very pleased with.
I'll wait until the next heavy rain, see if I can pinpoint the exact source of the leak, and then have it repaired while still under warranty.

Sort of sounds like the body is flexing when I initially back out of my driveway. Slight drop-off from the driveway to the road, and a kind of loud creak/cracking/popping noise seems to emanate from the right side of the car. No noise I can notice while driving and once the car does it, it takes a while before it will do it again, like after driving on level ground for a bit. Frame issues maybe?

A few weeks back I had problems getting the hatch to close on my wagon w/ the power button, then it started working again. Today, tried to close the hatch w/ the button and nothing happened. It opens fine from the buttons on the key fob, driver's door and hatch, it just won't close. Is it most likely the button that needs to be replaced or something else?

I just got a 2015 RX, loving it so far, I have been able to fiddle around with some settings to get it the way I want like keyless unlock drivers side door to unlock all doors, keeping iPod screen on with auto changing to maps, and track up on Navi.
However I cannot figure out how to get windows to go down but not sunroof when I hold the unlock button? Is there a way?
