Elantra MD (2010-15) :: Pulley Noise That Lasts For About 3 Seconds
May 30, 2014
I have a 2013 elantra with about 26,000 miles on it. I usually don't use it on weekends and on Monday's it makes a noise that lasts about 3 seconds. I believe the noise comes from a pulley that is not turning.
When this first happened, pulley had a couple of lines where paint peeled off and now the pulley has almost no black paint left. Took the car to dealer, explained how the noise only happens after not using the car for a couple of days, and they have not been able to repeat the problem, they indicate that they can't replace the pulley for this reason and that the wear on the pulley is normal.
What is causing the issue?

This has happened twice so far, both with around 1/2 tank. After driving for ~25 minutes to work, I will go to shut the car off, and after pushing the key in and pulling it out, there is a mechanical noise from the rear of the car that lasts for about 2 full seconds. Is this the sound of the fuel pump on its way out? Or just an electrical gremlin (no! not in a VW!)?

I have a 2003 Subaru Forester with 240K miles on it. When I start the engine in the morning, there's a squealing noise under the hood that lasts for a few seconds. (Usually goes away as soon as I pop the hood and look at the engine.) I think it's one of three things: AC compressor, alternator, or power steering pump, but I haven't been able to isolate the noise to one of the three. I don't want to wind up replacing all three.

I just bought a used 2003 Pilot with 62,000 miles. I quickly noticed a that I hear a faint rumble sound that lasts about 2 seconds at speeds between 30 and 40. It sounds like I ran over a very short and shallow rumble strip. It can happen very quickly as I slowly accelerate. It only happens once, but not every time that I slowly accelerate. It also happen as I am coasting at these speeds. I took it back to the dealer, but they are puzzled. They thought I was crazy until I took them on a test drive and we eventually heard it. They tried adjusting the sway bar, but the sound continues.

My Honda has 61000 miles on it, it's an automatic . Just had oil change done at 59000, told was good for 5000 mil. The last few days I noticed a trrrr (kind of like a playing card in bike spokes but louder) noise coming from the front of the car, it lasts for a few seconds then stops. It happens mostly when it is in drive but not moving. Stops if I put in any other gear, doesn't happen while I have foot on gas. I did hear it very faintly today while coasting up to a red light otherwise it's always happened while in drive with foot on break. First time it happened was a few seconds after I stopped at a red light. Second time it happened was after the car was parked for an hour. When I got back in and threw it in drive it did it.

This winter, my little green Echo sprang a noise. I noticed that when I turned on the heater plus fan that it would often (but not always) make a ch, ch, ch, ch, ch, ch sound that would last maybe 3 seconds then fade away, only to be reawakened when I started accelerating after a traffic light. For a while this winter it seemed to happen multiple times in a jaunt about town. (I would usually get a bit nervous, promise myself to have it looked at by my Echo car-diologist, and then turn off the fan for a while.) Just when I was about to take it in, it stopped happening, even with the heat/fan on full. And now it has started happening again. I know peanuts about cars, but my intuition says it's some kind of belt in the fan that's slipping. The car has about 75,000 miles on it....

I have a Hyundai Elantra Limited 2012. A few months ago the Short Block was replaced because the engine was noisy. Now it started to do that noise, if I remember it's a little bit similar : Youtube video: [URL] .... Or search youtube for: Hyundai elantra 2012 engine rattle noise
It rattled very loud for 1 or 2 seconds on a cold start the other day too. Noise appears to be coming from the engine. It does it pretty much all the time, at idling, when I accelerate it accelerates too and when I slow down it kinds of do too slowly. Need another new short block or is it something else like the timing chain or a bearing?

Every once in a while, I hear a sound coming from under my car, possibly the passenger side, that sounds like I am pulling a tin can around. It only lasts about 3 seconds. Sometimes I'll hear it when sitting at a red light, or accelerating from a complete stop. Then the sound disappears. This doesn't happen all the time, but I do feel like I'm hearing it more often as time is going on.
I did a little research online, and some say it could be a rock under my heat panel, but that seems too easy. I don't have any issues with shifting gears or accelerating.

Two months ago I bought a used 2006 Sonata v6 with 54,000 miles. After a few hundred miles I began to hear a rattle on cold start that lasts approx 5 secs. I did my research and saw the TSB concerning the timing chain tensioners. The TSB instructs the dealer to turn the engine off after reaching operating temp then restart after 10 minutes. If there was no noise after the ten minute start then the car is operating normally. My car does not rattle after the 10 minute start up. I just can't see this as a normal characteristic. What could be causing this noise?

The engine starts with knocking, rattling, and vibration that lasts for about 5 seconds. It seems to be an intermittent, rare event. With nearly 250,000 Prius in the North American market and the onset of cooler weather, it is time to see how frequently this occurs.

2006 Sonata LX. It's only on a cold start up and lasts for about 30-45 seconds tops..and then it goes away. Car has 74k on it. Treated well. Only use synthetic oil and no check engine lights. Last oil change I put 5w 30 in it. I know it says to use 5w 20. Could this be the problem?

I have a 2005 Honda CRV with 139,000 miles that recently developed a miss. It usually does it while holding steady at 50 mph but only lasts for a couple seconds. If it misses may do it once or twice and then nothing the rest of the day. Had the dealership put it on the computer for a reading and they said it's showing no misfires and is running properly. Plugs have been changed other maintenance performed and have had absolutely no issues until now.

So I installed my intake....again this weekend and have been monitoring it to make sure it doesn't pop off again. When you first start up, there is a very loud growl coming from the intake that lasts about 20 seconds. I also noticed that the breather filter kicks in during this time as well. Is this normal? I would yes but want to understand exactly why...

From time to time I get this high vibration on start-up of the car. It almost seems like more of the engine noise and vibration is coming through to the cabin. It only lasts about 5 seconds from initial start up and the rpm does not change and stays constant. This only happens maybe once every other week or once a month. What or why this could be happening?

I used the a/c for the first time this year on my 2013 F250 and heard some noises I don't remember hearing before. When the a/c(or defrost) is on every 12 sec or so I hear a hissing sound that lasts for a couple of seconds then goes away. Is this the compressor cycling and if so is it normal to hear it inside the cab?
I know it has to do with the a/c because if I shut it off as the hissing sound is being made the sound will instantly stop. Other than the noise the a/c works fine and blows cold air. Also, if it matters I have the standard control panel, not climate control.

For me it happens after I have driven the car for a while (engine is up to temp). I will turn the car off to go into a store or something. Then when I drive off again the revs will hang for several seconds. When this happens without my noticing it obviously makes for a violent shift into second gear. Once it does it 1 occasional rev hang car behaves normally. I know the revs drop slower when the engine is cold, but this is something totally different.

I have a 2012 elantra limited with navigation package. My iPhone 4 will only connect and stream pandora for exactly 15 seconds then it will stop streaming to the car. The phone is not plugged in and I am just trying to get the Bluetooth to work properly. It connects and disconnects constantly. I have reset my phone but it will only stream for that short period of time. Is there a setting I need to do?

This just started last night. 2012 e ltd goes "pfft" 3 times after shut off. Sounds like 3 small back fires about 2 seconds after I shut off engine. Very soft sound. The third one is not quite as loud as the first two, and if the door isn't open, you can't hear it. Seems to be coming from under the engine cover, near the throttle body.
Let me add the mileage has dropped from about 26.9 in town to 23.6.

I have an '05 FX4 with 5.4 and 55,000 miles. I've noticed that once in awhile when starting the truck after it has sat for at least a day I get a type of growling noise that lasts for a second or two. It usually happens shortly after the engine starts up and gets running, but it has also happened after it has run for a minute or two and then makes the noise when I give it some gas to take off. From inside the cab the sound seems like it is coming from the driverside firewall area, but on the rare occasion that I'm able to start the truck and jump out before it makes the sound it sounds like it is coming from underneath the center of the truck. It doesn't make the sound every time on a cold start and never makes it on subsequent starts. I drive truck during the week only drive my Ford on weekends and sometimes it goes longer without being started, but I don't know if this has anything to do with it.
I thought it was a shield vibrating or something but have also heard that the VCT parts can make a rattling sound on a cold start also and this has me a little worried. This sound seems more like a fast growl than a rattle, but it happens so fast it's over before I can really register what it is. One time it made the sound twice, once after startup and again after it had idled a minute or two, thats when it seemed like it came from under the center of the truck. The engine has had a slight cam phaser knock since new, but it is so quiet that it can only be heard if you're inside a building or next to a wall and roll the window down.
Also, I change the oil every 2500-3000miles and only use Motorcraft 5w20 and a 820S filter, and generally baby the truck. What this could be. The truck runs great all the time, I just get this noise occasionally after cold start.

I took my A/C tensioner pulley (the pulley that is on the upper left of my crankshaft/harmonic balancer) off and when I took it off, the plates and washer fell off and I wasn't 100% positive how they went back on. I mean I thought I was 100% positive until I tried putting it back on. There are two plates, one on the front of pulley and one on the back. I'm guessing the smaller 1 has to be on the front because it has marks from the nut that goes on the front. The other one in my mind obviously has to be the back 1. The thick washer "seems" to go behind the back plate. It has stain marks on it that line up with the mounted bracket behind it, that is why I say seems. The actual bolt goes in from behind the bracket. The problem is when putting the pulley back on, I tighten the nut (I can't find the torque specs anywhere) in the front and the pulley won't spin freely at all. When I loosen the nut to the point where the pulley can slide side to side it will spin no problem. Something just ain't right but what it is. Are there more parts to this thing that might have rolled off into the abyss? Did I put the parts on wrong?

Preparing for a timing belt replacement on a 2007 elantra. well aware of how to remove the crank pulley and do the job. My question is this : once you have the nut off, does the crank pulley come off by hand or is a puller required? came off nicely wiggling it by hand on any accent i've done, but never done this particular job with the elantra.
