Someone with a similar problem said it was a timing chain cover issue and someone else a cam shaft issue. It's a 2012 elantra limited 1.8L with 55000km the short block was replaced around 45000km.
I just bought a 2013 Elantra GLS last weekend. When the engine is running at idle and I'm standing outside of the car, the engine seems to be noisy. Maybe to the point where there is a small exhaust leak somewhere. I don't notice the noise when I'm driving the car - interior noise seems normal. Is it normal for the 1.8L engine to be a bit noisy at idle? The car just turned 100 miles.

It rattled very loud for 1 or 2 seconds on a cold start the other day too. Noise appears to be coming from the engine. It does it pretty much all the time, at idling, when I accelerate it accelerates too and when I slow down it kinds of do too slowly. Need another new short block or is it something else like the timing chain or a bearing?
I have had a rattle that lasts 2 seconds on my 2012 Elantra for the since about 2 oil changes ago. The car has 152,000 miles on it and I've changed the oil regularly per the maintenance schedule, although not always with a Hyundai filter.
I'm strongly suspecting that this is the timing chain tensioner, but I could be wrong. Other than this, the car runs fine. I tried having the oil changed by the Hyundai dealer with the OEM oil filter and the problem appears to be a little worse. It first started to appear on cold start up after the car sat for >8 hrs or so. Now, it appears on cold start up >2 hrs. I noticed that the dealer put 5W20 in it.
I'm wondering if lower viscosity oil makes the problem worse during hot weather. It seems when the weather is colder it takes longer for it to appear. I'm wondering what my options are here. I really don't know how much $$ it is to go after the tensioner and how critical it is - the dealer said they do replace them and that doesn't always fix the problem though I'm not sure what he meant. I have read a few other posts about tensioners here, but I'm also wondering if this is an issue with the new engine.
Mine is just like this other owner's Elantra. Stealership say's "it normal". Surprise, surprise!
When I asked him how come my car wasn't doing it 50 miles ago and the 2013 loaner doesn't do it, his answer was "it's warrantied to 100k". I call BS. It's the timing chain tensioner or the the guides or both.
I say Hyundai knows about this and does not want to pay for warranty work because it's a costly job labor wise. Just like the Sonata's tensioner problems of the past.

This just started yesterday on cold start and happened again this morning and this evening always after sitting for hours. I would call it a chatter sound, very distinct and only on the first start. Never heard it before. Have 97K on car, will be changing the plugs soon. Once it is warm the sound is not there on starts. It is only when starting, sounds fine once running. What would only be noisy when cold like this? Timing chain? Valves? I'm going to let others with a better sense of engines than me (my son and his friend who are mechanics) listen to it and see what they think. But it needs to be cold. Never heard such a sound on my Hondas which makes me think it may be the chain. Funny how it just came out of no where.
View 16 RepliesWhen I leave the car in the parking space for a couple of days (in cold weather) and then start driving it, I notice that when I brake I hear noises (like thud.. thud...). Eventually as the engine warms up the noise goes away. I can never reproduce this at the dealer as I have to drive half an hour to the dealer and by that time the noise goes away. Should I be concerned?

It's definitely much louder with the hood up--doesn't seem quite as drastic when sitting in the driver's seat.
I've come across the thread here on the engine rattle/knock fix, but I'm not sure if this is the same thing. Would this be considered a knock?
It's a 2011 Elantra with about 82,000 miles on the odometer. It has an extended warranty on it, in addition to the 100,000 mile powertrain warranty on it, so it's at the dealership this morning.
Just got rid of my 2011 Audi a4 for 2012 Elantra Limited with tech pkg. I like the car a lot but man is it noisy at highway speeds. Really makes phone calls and radio listening difficult.
View 25 RepliesWhen starting the car and ONLY when it's a cold start, like sitting overnight, it makes this weird "groaning" or "whining" noise. I took a video of it because if I drive it to the dealer, then start the car there, it's not going to do it as it only happens after a long period of being off. Listen really closely after the car starts and right before the radio comes on, you will hear a faint groaning noise. It's louder in person, but this is the best I could do.

Wife has a 2011 Elantra 1.8L... 5 years old and only has 24,000 kms on it.
Barely uses it, mostly for short trips, keeps it parked outside in the elements.
I've noticed the fuel mileage kinda sucks and has a rough cold start and performance lags while driving.
is it worth replacing the spark plugs? Always seems to fix these kind issues with my past cars.
Even with the low kms I assume they might need replacing since its 5 years old?
I have elantra 2012 with approx mileage of 47,000 kms. I started to fell that the front suspension becoming noisy while driving slowely on the bumps and rough roads. This noise feels even on steering wheel that this has some connection to steering rod in somewhere.
I had took the car to local dealership here in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia where the kept the car for about a weak and return it say that the car is fixed, but the noise was there or came back in days only.
Second time, the same thing happened, approached the dealership they took and hand over the car, removing some air from all 4 tires a (which i have noticed). but the problem remains the same.
I have noticed as well that the car is not so stable on the roads while driving at different speeds.
My door hinges are noisy (creak sound) even more so since this spring mostly on the back doors. I've been using white lithium grease (lots of it) like it's suggested but it doesn't last (only a couple days) ...
View 11 RepliesThe front end of my 2013 Elantra GLS "Creaks" when I go over large bumps especially when the tires/springs extend - like when you go over a smooth rut in the road or if I make a sharp turn and the weight of the car shits to one side. Of course it doesn't happen all the time so that's the perfect excuse for the dealer to look the other way. I haven't taken it there yet because I know if I don't point them in the right direction it'll take 4 times as long to remedy the problem.
Anyway, temperature doesn't seem to affect as much but in the mornings when it's colder it's slightly more noticeable. I've tried to record the sound but that's easier said then done. I've push down on the front end to see if I could reproduce the sound but it doesn't happen when the shocks are compressed but rather when the spring extends. The creaking sounds like when you walk on a old wooden floor or opening an old door kinda thing. What it could be?
We have gotten a record breaking amount of snow this winter and it has been tough on the smaller vehicles. The last couple days my car has developed an odd issue. When I start the car and it is not warmed up as in there is only one bar on the engine temp meter, I put the car into reverse but don't take my foot off the brakes and the car starts to vibrate strongly. Once it's warmed up to a few bars it operates normally. I know the brakes have some ice on them too but that is a different matter, also there is snow/ice packed into the underside due to the amount of snow on the roads here.
Car is currently parked in my garage with the heater heater on so hopefully it can melt some of the junk from the underside by tomorrow.
My Elantra 2011 headlights do not come on when it is cold. (30 degrees or lower) They eventually come on after about 5-10 minutes as the engine warms up. I've had the switch replaced with no change.

As far as transmission issues both Elantra's from a cold start after allowing RPM's to idle down before taking off they both have started shifting hard going from 1st to second gear 1st car was around 8-9 k miles now 2nd started at 3 k miles. Since owning 2 cars same make same year same transmission and many times to dealer 1st car ended with Transmission replaced 2nd has now started doing the same thing they reset adaptive and next day did it again its now back at dealer waiting for them to diagnose again.
View 13 RepliesI just got into my 2012 GLS Elantra and tried firing it up, and the engine will turn over, but wont start. Power windows, radio, lights, everything works. Earlier in the day, I moved the car from the garage to the driveway and turned it off about 30 seconds after I turned it on..
I've read things from checking the sparks to the fuel pump..is it possible that it could be flooded? I am leaving it alone right now and I plan to try to fire it up in an hour or so with the accelerator fully pressed down in case this is the case, hopefully that does the trick..
I want to know which method is the more appropriate and safer option to start the engine with a push button. There are two ways:
Method 1) You get in the car, press the brake, push the button to START
Method 2) You get in the car, push the button till all the lights come on, wait for a few seconds, press the brake, and push the button to START
Which one is more recommended? Does either option have any affect on the mechanism and life of the Push Button function?
I have a 2011 elanta limited with the push to start. 3x now I will park and push to turn off car. & it turns engine off but navigation and such stay on. Ill try to start it up and try again, exact same thing. Then I give up and get out and it will beep because my keys aren't nearby and continue to stay on. It's lasted an hour tips so far until it will cooperate.I can't completely turn it off. More info, 3x in 4months. Not driven or done anything differently any of those times.
